So how does the draft work?

I read that the order is based off of winning percentage first, then strength of schedule.

Now, I also read that the Raiders had the strongest strength of schedule in 07. So I've got some questions.

Star-divide

  1. Will the strength of schedule be based off of the pre-season, or the numbers from this season? If it's the latter, then I have no idea where they fall amidst the other 4-12 teams from this year: Atlanta, NY Jets, and KC.
  2. Would the team with the strongest strength of schedule get the best pick? Or would it go in the reverse order, based on the logic that the team with the strongest schedule is the best team at that record, and thus deserves a worse pick?
Thanks in advance to whomever knows the answer to this. Looks like the Raiders have a pick in the 3-5 range for sure, so the draft should be interesting.

The Raiders will draft #6.
The Raiders lose all the tie breakers with the other teams, but inversely will have the #34 pick ahead of everyone else.  It is somewhat academic since there will be a very good player sitting at #6.
The schedule for next year also looks very good other than playing NE at home.  The Raiders play the Jets, Falcons, Panthers, and either the Texans or Titans at home, get TB, NO, Miami on the road.  The schedule sets up very well for the Raiders next year to have a break out season.

Is that the schedule?
We need to make a statement next year.

yes, that is the schedule
although we don't know what the dates are, and in what order we play the teams.  There are only two possible cold weather games, Denver or Buffalo both of which we have to play there.  Overall it looks like it is a very easy schedule next year, other than NE, no power houses to play.  We could easily win 10 games next year if necessary corrections are made to the team.

Looks like you are incorrect about our draft
status, we are at the mercy of the coin, as we could get 3rd, and no lower than 5th.
NEW YORK -- Atlanta, Kansas City and Oakland are involved in a complicated coin flip scenario to decide the third, fourth and fifth picks in the NFL draft in April.

The first pick will go to Miami (1-15) and the second to St. Louis (3-13).

I just saw THAT too:
I can see the Rams taking Dorsey and the Dolphins taking Jake Long.

That would make McFadden the #3 pick!!!

IF that happens I would love to trade that pick, move down and scoop a 2nd and third as well.

Damn
We could get so much value with that pick.

C'mon coin flip -- Tails never Fails!!

the truth is that
teams don't trade up much anymore to get a pick.  There is nobody in the draft which is a sure fire star so no need to move up in the draft so more than likely the Raiders will take the draft pick as is, there are a lot of good players at 3 or 4.

I don't know about that
You have guys like Jerry Jones who will reportedly give up a few things to get his fellow Razorback McFadden on his team, you know there are a lot of other people who are less vocal who want  talent like McFadden.

Sure trades or positioning in the draft doesn't happen a lot, but when the owner of the Cowboys, who already has running backs at his disposal, looks to make moves, I believe the holder of that golden spot can make the best of it.

Teams don't want to trade into the #1 spot
anymore, because of the amount of money, but the 3 or 4 pick, is usually arouned the same amount of money each year, signing bonus, and salary.

I am very happy to be wrong
I had bad information, thought there were some tie break issues that went against the Raiders.  I am trying to figure out how the Jets had a tougher schedule but who cares, if the NFL says that, then that is fine with me.  My god, if we pick 3rd or 4th we have the pick of the litter, now the question is what do we do with that, a wide receiver, offensive lineman, defensive lineman?  As Saint suggests, dropping back some spots and getting another pick would be very nice.
