Cable seems like the real deal
Read this on Raiders.com
Oakland Raiders interim Head Coach Tom Cable addressed the media immediately following Thursday's practice session at the team's Alameda, Calif., facility as the Silver and Black head into the bye week and get ready to play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October 12 at the Louisiana Superdome.
Coach Cable: Today was an awesome practice.
Q: What separated it from yesterday and normal practices?
A: Little better focus, a little more sharpness on both sides of the ball. I was out for special teams and they got a ton of work done. I didn’t realize they were getting that much work done. But as good as they are playing it didn’t surprise me. That was impressive, very impressive.
Q: How is it to have the extra week to get used to being in this position?
A: It’s good, I think it’s good for all of us. Whenever you go through something like that, it’s good to have a little time to take a deep breath. We talked to them about when you come back, come back with your mind right. Go away this weekend, enjoy your family and kids, that’s it. When we come back it’s a 12-week grind, so it’s good to have the extra week for the coaches and players.
Q: About passing, can we see more from JaMarcus Russell like last game?
A: What you’re going to see is balanced offense. That’s the key. Whether that means more passing or not I don’t know. You might see a series or two where it’s all pass or all run. I think we have to be more balanced. We do run the football, so there’s a lot of people in the box so you’ve got to take your shots.
Q: Is coaching what you always wanted to do, and can you tell us about your entry into it?
A: There’s two people: Dick Armstrong who was my high school coach, and Keith Gilbertson, Sr. Those two guys had the greatest influence on me wanting to be a teacher and a coach but I always wanted to do it. I grew up thinking that I wanted to do it. It’s always been my dream, always been my passion.
Q: How much passion do you have for the running game and working with the offensive line?
A: I do have great passion. I played that spot so I can really understand them and how much they go through, what they put their bodies through. You have to kind of oil them up and keep pushing them. I do understand that. Without question this is a tremendous passion for me. I always want to be a part of that.”
Q: How much did you work with Greg Knapp on calling plays and your relationship in Atlanta?
A: I think I’m very blessed to have him here because we went through a year together. In between series we’d talk about doing ‘this and this’ and give it to me in that order. He was great, and I look forward to that dynamic. It’s in tact, in place and we can really go after it together. I look forward to that.
Q: How itchy do you see him to be able to call plays. That is something he’s always done?
A: We talked about it the last couple of days and he is certainly excited about it. The nice thing is he has called a lot of plays in a lot of big games. You know he’s been in San Francisco and in the playoffs, he’s been in Atlanta and they were in the playoffs, he went all the way to NFC Championship game so he’s called games when something was really, really big on the line and you know that is not like any other weekend in the NFL. You know. To have that experience there I think is going to be awesome.
Q: Do you see this team as being close to being a contender?
A: Yeah I do. I don’t have any question in my mind. First thing we have to do is learn how to win, then we have to learn how to handle winning. We compete hard, I think that’s obvious. That’s step one. Step two is learn how to win. We need to win in the fourth quarter. Once that happens we need to learn how to handle winning because it hasn’t happened for a while. You don’t just go out and win a few games and think everything’s all rosy because it can blow up on you. There’s still a process that you have to get through. Right now it’s about learning how to win games and finish games in the fourth quarter.

It was a good move!
I don’t care what the media is saying about the move or Mr. Davis. Coach Kiffin continually crossed the boss. He is a good coach and will do fine, I hope he learned to not knock the boss in public.
As far as Coach Cable, he did a great job at Cal when he was there. Our O-line is starting to play better because of him. Knapp is also really good, he understands the power football style of Mariucci, and I believe Cable coached Cal’s O-line for Mariucci. We have to get back to power running, it is what the Raiders have always done, even when Lamonica was tossing it deep to Wells, the Raiders were a run it down the throats of the opposition first type of team.
I can’t wait for the Saints game. The team should be good and fired up just to prove everyone wrong. I also expect Cable & Knapp to turn JeMarcus loose much more than the former coach did.
Now, if we could just find some guys who can run routes and catch a pass.

I am looking for Javon to break out under Cable:
It is inexcusable to NOT get him the ball after his first two receptions last Sunday. INEXCUSABLE!!!

who does Al blame for the Javon signing at the end of the season (or who voluntarily falls on the sword)?

For a guy who doesn't know anything
you sure write a lot. A receiver is as good as the QB who throws him the ball. He is no better nor worse than the QB. I am sure that two years ago you wrote that Moss sucks. If Javon starts dropping wide open passes then I will join your chorus but until the happens I will wait my judgment.

no, JaMarcus hasn't thrown to him
in fact, until the last game the Raiders didn’t even throw much of anything. I believe that 4 balls have been thrown at Javon, and he has caught all of them. That is all I am saying. If a receiver does not have passes thrown to him he cannot catch them. He appeared to me at least that Javon was open a few times and the ball wasn’t thrown his way. I assume you are referring to his other problems as being in a strip club and going to Vegas and getting mugged. If that be the case I think we have a lot of players in the league with “problems”.

It's not just the QB
A receiver is as good as the QB who throws him the ball.
Some QB ratings aren’t fair. When the QB hits the Wide Out in the numbers and he still drops the ball, it’s not the QB’s fault.

I agree Saint
ironic that he once caught everything but now has only caught two passes. Also ironic that he was our target on third, now our third down target is well no body. That’s another weakness for this team third down efficiency. We seem to struggle if we don’t get anywhere on 1st and 2nd. Of course all teams struggle on third and long, but we seem to be especially troubled.

Look at Belichek's record before
he wisely installed Brady at QB after his starter got injured. It is just silly to comment on a coaches previous record, how well did Spurrier do in the NFL, and he had a glittering record at Florida. I have not heard much about Idaho being a powerhouse in college football. Will he succeed in Oakland, hell, I don’t know but to use your kind of logic is pure nonsense.

Loyal to the Raiders since 1965
I’ve been a loyal follower since 1965 and I will not be surprised if this team sucks it up to finish at 9-7. We should have won the every game but the Bronco game had the offense kept the ball a little longer in the 2nd half, and as far as the D goes in the 2nd halves of those games, apparently the ex-coach had more to do with it than anyone truly is admitting to, well anyone except Mr. Davis (he deserves to be called Mr. Davis just because I do not know him, and because of his stature in the game).
This team has the fastest defense we have ever had and it is time to turn them loose.
I’m still not sold on Javon Walker, and will not be sold on him until he starts earning his keep.
My question, since I’m now ensconced in the Texas Hill Country, is what’s the word on McFadden’s turf toe and Fargas’ groin pull; although I have the national Fox package, the switch to Comcast nearly everywhere has kept me from watching the weekly Raider show.

Yeah Bacon
I’ll take that action. I say the Raiders go 9-7 the rest of the season under Cable’s lead. We should be 3-1 right now but due to conservative play calling in the 4th quarter we lost two heartbreaking games. Under a motivational coach the Raiders will finish games and win games.
By the way, no coach can get a winning record with Idaho so that’s just bad judgement by you. Many NFL coaches have succeeded without being a good college coach.
Javon Walker will emerge as a star receiver again under Cable.

I hope the Raiders do well, but considering their recent history, that ain't going to
happen. Firing Kiffen doesn’t change the fact that they’re still the Raiders (i.e.expect at most 4 wins). Javon Walker is a washed-up head case who’ll be cut by the ‘09 season (and who’s signing will be blamed on Kiffen).

6 years ago the Raiders were in the Super Bowl.
Correct me if I am wrong but Al was the owner then also. How many other teams have been in the Super Bowl since 2000? 3 years ago GB won 4 games as did Cleveland. This year teams who won 10 last year will be lucky to win 6 this year, there is a very fine line between winning and losing, in fact there is very little difference between teams. Until last week everyone was making fun of Miami until they butt kicked New England. Houston is in the same boat as Oakland, lost a few games they should have won.
Everybody’s darling Buffalo is flat out lucky this year, and everyone is jumping on their bandwagon, inversely last year they were the unluckiest team in the league, losing game after game they should have won, that is the nature of the NFL. Cable said it right, you have to learn to win, and then learn to keep winning. For years the Raiders knew how to win, they won numerous games they should have lost, now for the last 5 years they have stepped back and forgotten how to win. None of this has anything to do with Al, he is the same now as he was then. This BS that Al is caught in a time warp is nonsense. Favre has made a career of throwing balls in the air that more often than not has led to long TD’s. The thing about long passes is that even if they are not caught, some old teacher or insurance salesman might call a phony pass interference penalty. You have to stretch the defense or else they stack it up inside and the running attack will not succeed.

12 teams have made the superbowl since 2000, about a third of the league. And thats with the Giants making 2 and the Pats going to 4.
Oh yah, and that was Gruden and Bruce Allens team. The last time the Raiders were good? Well that was the last time Al let someone else make decisions.

Where do you get your information?
Gruden and Allen, who were hired by Al in the first place when no one else would give them a job in those positions that Al did, were not making decisions. They were advising Al and Al was listening and collectively decisions were made. Allen was not a GM, he worked salary cap management and player contracts but did not get into personnel decisions. That was Al, Lombardi and some senior scouts. Gruden just coached the team. And it is just quite possible that the talent that Gruden had at the time responded to Gruden’s coaching style and he was a success where the other coaches, White, Bugel, Callahan, Turner and Shell failed.
With the exception of these last 5 years, Al has always had “football people” executive assistants by his side to “advise” him on “his” decisions for the franchise. For a long time those advisers were Al Lo Casale and Ron Wolf who were a very large part of those successful times.
Now, according to Al from the press conference, he is going to bring in a football person from outside the organization this off season to be that executive assistant/GM.
Regardless of that, Cable will make it if these players respond to him and he knows how to coach these players to reach all of their potential. Kiffen might have known how to motivate but he was in way over his head as far as being an NFL head coach.

Hind sight is a great thing isn’t it? Yes, the last 5 years have been bad without Al having his “trusted advisers”. The decisions that were made in the draft and FA were mostly done by Al. But at the time they were being made I;m sure he thought they were the right decisions. Some were, many were not and now we are a young team that now seems to be on the right track.

said even in the press conference, the loyalty to great Raiders players. Look I liked Crockett too. I even wanted to get a Crockett jersey before he was released, but he was getting older. if we could hold 4th. quarter leads
we would have beat playoff contenders in the Bills and Chargers. The Saints don’t have much of a defense and we seem to be able to dismantle high ranked offenses until the second half (evidence of this, Chargers were 5th. ranked offense coming into last weekend) All the Raiders need is to step it up in the second half and we can win a lot of games. It’s only a matter of time until we reach our full potential.

That's right Kaizer
We had two playoff contenders beat. And, thanks to Kiffin’s conservative three and out play calling in the 4th quarter….we let the other teams come back and win. Not to mention, we ran a cover 2 zone defense against the Broncos in the opening game and we have played man to man for……..ever. That would of been a different game if Nnamdi was playing Royal one on one while Hall played whoever instead of a zone defense we’ve never used in an actual regular season game.
This Raider’s team has the talent equivalent to that of the 2002 roster in which we made it to the super bowl. It’s just a matter of utilizing it the RIGHT way and Cable will do a much better job of that than Kiffin ever could.
Raiders-31 Saints-23 is my prediction and I look for both quarterbacks to have over 300 yards passing.

a bit of a stretch
at russell having 300 pass yards. And a stretch to say we’re as good as the 02 team. Our receivers aren’t doing jack squat and the O-Line is shaky at best. (I actually think we should put Henderson in, after all he matched up good to Tamba Hali and Aaron Schobel) The D however looks really good except for in the fourth. But we don’t have a QB like gannon, receivers like Brown and Rice (best receiving corps Oakland’s ever had) and we don’t have the O-Line.
