Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

It's time

To start Andrew Walter to see if he can manage a game any better than Russell. And if he can't then we'll know it's not Russell's fault we're losing. From the look of things though a less than 50% completion percentage is not impressing me any. Our run game is just too good for Russell to be sucking this bad unless he just really does suck that bad. We have Javon Walker, Ronald Curry, Ashley Lelie, Johnnie Higgins, and Zach Miller. It's not like we don't have the weapons to be more successful with.

Trade Fargas for a free safety and we'll be set. Louis Rankin can take his place behind a starting McFadden and a powerful backup(short yardage situations) Michael Bush.

Something needs to be done because our offense obviously isn't doing their job.

Do you realize

how good the Baltimore D is? Especially at home. Russell is the QB, for the good and the growing pains.
If we have to sacrifice this season to get Russell the experience he needs to go into the next season, then so be it. We aren’t going anywhere with Walter.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

Starting Walter is a bad idea

We came into this year knowing we would have growing pains with JaMarcus. He has an incredible learning curve to tackle. We know he doesn’t have the tools since Lelie and Walker aren’t getting open in the backfield. Sitting him down now will take away the learning snaps he needs to become a better later on down the line.

Also, why trade Fargas when a.) he runs hard, b.) he wants to be a Raiders, c.) DMC has a lingering injury, and d.) Bush is still pretty much a rookie?

We have to tweak other places, but I think the positions of RB and QB shouldn’t be messed around with.

interesting shot

walter isn’t the answer. i like him but he is not the answer to whats happening with our offense. j-man is our guy but our o-line needs to step up and bury people. our receivers need to get open. that’s our problem. keep the offense on the field and stretch the field and we will get the victories.

Russell looks like a bust so far

He doesn’t get any useful yards until late in the 4th when we’re down by two touchdowns.

Other teams are expecting our run game and play 8 in the box and he still can’t get completions. That’s just being too leniant to keep blaming every game on the coach or the receivers, it’s time for him to step up and earn that $60 million check we gave him coming out of college. He played for LSU, it doesn’t take this long to learn how to pass in the NFL. I think Matt Ryan is the perfect example of how Jamarcus should be playing this season. AND YOU DEFINENTLY CANNOT SAY THE FALCONS HAVE BETTER RECEIVERS. Roddy White is their only good receiver. We need to stop kissing his ass and put some job pressure on him so he can earn his keep and not just keep expecting to be the starter each week just because he was a high draft pick.

By the way, when I said less than 50% completions, I didn’t even mean that against the Ravens D, even though that is bad considering Samari Rolle and Dawan Landry didn’t play. I meant less than 50% completions on the season. Stop making excuses for why we suck, I am accepting it finally and I believe benching Michael Huff will make him an even better player in the long run. That same move should be made on Russell so these guys will play to their expected potential. We did this with Nnamdi Asomugha early in his career, he practiced much harder to get better, now he’s a pro bowler and is also considered one of the best shutdown corners in the league.

Russell will be the future of the Raiders, if we use him and raise him right.

Anyone who disagrees with this, what is your perspective on why we’re 2-5? Please give your “serious” opinion Amoc.

Ravens CB Chris McAlister didn't start either...

…but not that it mattered. JaMarcus is still young and you shouldn’t make any changes based on this game, which would have been tough if you came in here undefeated. This defense is just too smart for a youngster like Russell, much less a young team with issues. Rob Ryan might have known what he was defending against, but the offense still have to perform, which is a tall task for teams coming into our crib. Take your lumps and learn from it. Keep JaMarcus in there, although Daunte’ Culpepper would have been a great mentor for him (same size, good teacher).

Great, all these Raider fans

And your response makes the most sense, right down to keeping Culpepper as a mentor.

Not saying that all other comments didn’t make any sense, just saying that yours made the most sense. Want to be clear, you know, for my safety’s sake.

I'm here to talk about the past.

You already know that Walter isn't good enough

to be a QB on a playoff caliber team. Panicking and pulling Jamarcus will only hurt you long term potential. He’s not playing well right now but you spent the first pick in the draft on him, you have to give him time. And besides, it’s not like there is a playoff team around him that he’s holding back. Ride it out, build you team and if he’s hasn’t improved at the end of the year you draft a mid round insurance policy. The end of next year is when you make a final decision.

I'd like to revisit the point where you said our run game was "good"

not even our run game is good right now. Fargas is only getting like 40 yards a game and he’s our leading rusher. We run the ball like 30-40 times a game and only get a little over 100 in each game. The only reason our run game is ranked fifth (as of pre-Sunday ranking for average yards per game) is because of two or three good games this year. KC we had 300 yards, Broncos we had around 140-160, Jets we had 140 (off of Alston and Higgins trick runs) These games make us forget games like yesterday, like the Bills, and like the Saints. If the Raiders don’t get over 120 yards a game, we lose. And if we do get over 120 yards rushing, often we blow leads in the fourth as we’ve done in all but four games this year (KC, Ravens, Saints, Broncos). If our run game gets us only one or two yards a carry (as many fargas runs netted us) then we have no chance on third down with a pass game I’d say is one of the worst I’ve ever seen anywhere at anytime. This team still has several problems and when our two strengths (run offense, pass defense) are gone, we can expect more years of disarray. If the Raiders don’t pick up any Harris or Walker free agent scale disasters, don’t throw away draft picks (because there’s tons of talent this year in the draft), and draft smart, next year should be better than this 06 level flop of a season. That’s right, I called this season 06, it may as well be.

bench Russell?

Punisher,

What a great idea, kill his development. Judge him on how many starts? You are as impatient as Davis. Why not bench the whole team and start over? I am still going to blame the coaches. Offensively this team either starts good and finishes bad or starts bad and finishes ok. I believe it is play calling, game prep and game time adjustments. You are in panic mode. I feel your frustration but I disagree.

I agree

I hate our stupid run Fargas on third down plan

The problem is

not the quarterback. It’s the O-line and coaching staff. A developing quarterback cannot perform well or develop behind a bad o-line. We fired Kiffin and yet we are still seeing the same problems with this team. Bad playcalling. Cannot punch it in in the red zone.

by Raider76 on Oct 27, 2008 1:39 PM PDT reply actions

You mean teams don't make miraculous comebacks

a week after firing their coach? Who knew that getting rid of Lane wouldn’t change the fact that we don’t have good players.

by RaiderPete on Oct 27, 2008 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

You forget

coming out of the bye week we put up a horrible game. To answer your question. Look at the Rams.

by Raider76 on Oct 27, 2008 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

An exception where

Linehan was so awful that even a below average NFL game plan made a difference. It’s rare that midseason coaching changes have much effect on a team, and even rarer that it’s a positive one.

by RaiderPete on Oct 27, 2008 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Knapp

was supposed to have all this freedom because Kiffin was gone. He was in complete control of the offense and what did we put up after having a bye week and the Saints having a short week. 34-3. I’m not asking for a “miraculous comeback” as you put it but I’m still seeing some of the same problems.

by Raider76 on Oct 27, 2008 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm just not sure what you expect them to do

The Rams are a bad team, but they do have Jackson, Holt, and Bulger. The only player we have with talent like that is McFadden and he’s hurt.

by RaiderPete on Oct 27, 2008 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

And we are a good team?

We have talent. We have Bush, McFadden, Fargas and an up and coming reciever in Schilens. I think you didn’t get what I was saying. Our O-line is still bad and we still are having the same issues that we faced under Kiffin. I actually feel we have a better team than the Rams but we aren’t playing like it.

by Raider76 on Oct 28, 2008 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

My point is we're not a good team

We weren’t underachieving under Lane, which is why it was dumb to fire him. The o-line wasn’t bad because Lane was the coach, the o-line was bad because they’re not talented football players. Same goes for most of the rest of the team.

And you’re not really going to compare Bush, Fargas, or Shillens to Steven Jackson or Tori Holt are you?

by RaiderPete on Oct 28, 2008 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

cause look how well Jackson's doing (sarcasm)

and holt’s ancient. You can’t compare a developing rookie to an NFL legend.

If you read above i said we weren't a good team.

My line was we have talent. Holt has one more year on his contract when we have a talented group of young players. Your statement was the only player we had with talent was McFadden. I never said the o-line was bad because of Kiffin. My original statement was based off of the comment that the problem was the quarterback. I stated the problem was the o-line and the coaching staff. You’re reaching by trying to imply that I’m comparing Holt and Jackson to the players we have.

by Raider76 on Oct 28, 2008 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

If we're not a good team

then why are you surprised that we didn’t get better when Kiffin was fired? If you think we’re bad why are you surprised we’re still bad?

by RaiderPete on Oct 30, 2008 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Because people

stated that Kiffin was the problem and that we would be better off without him. Kiffin was blasted for not letting JaMarcus loose and his playcalling.

by Raider76 on Oct 31, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

But

Kiffin was doing the right thing by playing it safe.

Exactly!

I was a big fan of KIffin. My point was basically that we have not seen an improvement from this team. People said Kiffin was the problem but we know Kiffin was not to blame. He knew what we had on the offensive side of the ball.
