Fixing The Raiders - Part 1, The GM

So I’ve been screaming from the roof tops under just about every post about how bad Al Davis is for the Raiders.  I figured that if I’m going to tell everyone there is a problem I should try to offer up a solution too.  You may think that this stuff won’t change anything, but that’s not entirely true.  If fans start talking enough then local media starts picking it up (usually sports radio is the first).  As the clamor grows the support grows, and while Al will certainly neither see or care about this particular post, it’s not outlandish to think that down the road he may hear a similar message.

Star-divide

The first step to fixing the Raiders problems is building a front office.  I don’t know the inner workings Al’s administration, but from everything I’ve gleamed it’s a fairly small outfit.  That’s one of the many outdated strategies Al uses.  When you look around the league most teams front offices are really robust, usually consisting of two divisions.  The first is the business side, they handle the cap, salary negotiations, and the day to day workings that any major business sees to.  The second is of course player personel, the side that Oakland appears to be lacking more so than the business side.  As far as I can tell the player personel department starts and ends with Al, with a sprinkling of cronies in the middle.

But of course the biggest part of any front office is the GM.  As I’ve said around here ad nauseum, the last time we were succesful was the last time Al let someone else make the decisions.  Unfortunately for me I know quite a bit about poor GM performance and GM searches, between the Mariners and the Raiders I’ve had my fill  (I may bleed silver and black but good god do I hate the A’s).  In my opinion the Raiders really need to find someone that understands scouting and building through the draft (this will be part 2, unless I’m flamed to hell, and even then I still might).  Using this criteria these are the candidates I’d love to see Al go after:  (First 3 provided by Adam Schefter)

Ruston Webster, Seahawks’ VP/Player personnel — Has a great job with a great salary in Seattle, so might not be easy to hire.

-       The Hawks have had good success in the draft and have won their division 4 straight years.  This former lowly AFC West division rival has turned into something of a model franchise, but on the field and from a business perspective.

Gene Smith, Jaguars’ executive director of college and pro scouting — Viewed as the heir apparent in Jacksonville.

 -       Jacksonville has been a very talented team for longer than people realize, and even when they’ve been great they’ve been overshadowed by the Colts.  He’s being groomed to be a GM and has his backround completely in player personel.

Tom Heckert, Eagles’ general manager — Has come close to leaving Philadelphia before and could be persuaded again.

-       Probably not incrediably realistic, but if theres even a chance you take a look.

Brian Gaine, Dolphins assitant director of player personel – Has touched Bill Parcels.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means.  I'd fully encourage pillaging the Seahawks, Eagles, Colts, Steelers, Jaguars, Packers, or anyone touched by Bill Parcels.  Of course it's all moot however if Al can't keep his hands out of the cookie jar.

For better or worse, Al is the Raiders.  Our team has a personality and a legacy that no other team can match.  Sadly we've clung to the idea of the Raiders far longer than the results on the field have told us to.  We've done it out of fear that if Al goes, if the Raiders change, the things that we loved will go away.  But the fact of the matter is that no one can take Kenny Stabler, Fred Biletnikoff, Art Shell, Tim Brown, Willie Brown, Howie Long, or even Al Davis away.

Al should, and always will be the face of the Raiders.  The crazy menacing old Al and the slick crafty young Al weave one of the most interesting tapestries of pro sports.  But it's time.  It's time for Al to hand over the day to day workings of the team.  It's time to let someone else sign the players and hire the coaches.  It's time for Al to sit back and enjoy his team.  And it's time for us to have a team worthy of Raider fans.

Good post

except the part about the A’s. Sorry you’re a Mariner’s fan.

I agree,

how great would it be to have general manager and have him build up a good solid front office. Problem is Al Davis’s body can stilll function….
We are locked in with Davis till he falls over, i like all the guys you named, but lets just hope Al strikes gold in the next raft and Cable turns out to be the real deal….

NAÏVE

Do you honestly believe that Al doesn’t realize the Raiders front office shortcomings? Do you really think that the fans voice regarding how his front office should be structured and staffed is going to resonate? The media is already aware, has already picked up on it and has put the question to Al at the press conference in which Al already acknowledged the fact. Al stated that he is already speaking to someone who is “local” , but outside the organization, that he would probably bring in during the off season to be that de facto GM type/football executive. I refer to my recent comment to one of your other comments in the Cable thread regarding how things have been in the Raiders front office:

Gruden and Allen, who were hired by Al in the first place when no one else would give them a job in those positions that Al did, were not making decisions. They were advising Al and Al was listening and collectively decisions were made. Allen was not a GM, he worked salary cap management and player contracts but did not get into personnel decisions. That was Al, Lombardi and some senior scouts. Gruden just coached the team. And it is just quite possible that the talent that Gruden had at the time responded to Gruden’s coaching style and he was a success where the other coaches, White, Bugel, Callahan, Turner and Shell failed.

With the exception of these last 5 years, Al has always had "football people" executive assistants by his side to "advise" him on "his" decisions for the franchise. For a long time those advisers were Al Lo Casale and Ron Wolf who were a very large part of those successful times.

Now, according to Al from the press conference, he is going to bring in a football person from outside the organization this off season to be that executive assistant/GM.

The NFL needs the Raiders to be winners. It has been widely acknowledged the the NFL is a better place when the Raiders are winners. With all of the decades Al has spent in football, there are numerous people, such as John Madden, Jerry Jones, Bill Parcells and Ron Wolf to name just a few, that have far more knowledge and far, far more influence on Al than any “clamor” that the fans can produce.

Al needs advisers that are going to “advise” him. You are dreaming and frankly wasting your time if you think Al is ever going to just turn over the keys to the franchise to others. He is going to do the right thing and get us winning again and he’s going to do it with expert help, not alone, but not without him either.

Al Davis does need advisors to advise him.

The problem is he has too many yes men in the organization and if you don’t agree with him you are gone. I think Al has been listening to what has been said about him and is getting someone outside the organization to be a GM which is good. It will be interesting to see how much control will he give this GM or will he be a lame duck.

No lame duck

It’s not a matter of how much control the GM has as much as it is how much Al can trust him. I provide for you a quote from today’s Jerry McDonald blog which demonstrates how to successfully work with Al:

Great story from a former Raiders assistant. Davis would make requests of things he would want to see from Jon Gruden. Rather than put the requests directly in the circular file, Gruden would have the video staff make a cut-up showing why he didn’t think it would work.

Davis would often be appeased, at least knowing his request was being considered.

Cable might want to borrow from that strategy.

It's the point!

Whether it’s the GM or the coach is irrelevant. What matter is the method and that method involved working with Al, Gruden knew this and that is why there was a successful working relationship. A GM, to be successful with Al will need to do the same, involve Al in football decisions…An adviser, as I’ve been stating through all of this.

The point is whether

or not the GM is going to be a GM or a lame duck. Thats what I was stating. Not how to work with Al.

by Raider76 on Oct 5, 2008 9:01 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Again

If the would-be GM understands the method of “how” to work with Al, like his successful predecessors, then he will be a GM and not a lame duck.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

So whats your answer then?

To just sit around and root for a crappy team and support a crappy owner and hope things change someday? Sorry, thats not for me. The Raiders need to be fixed and even if it isn’t for anyone but me and you and the rest of SaBP there is no reason it can’t be talked about. If we have to go down with the ship everytime Al steers us into an ice berg we can at least say the we saw the ice berg coming, and had we had the opportunity we could have missed it.

He has already said that he will bring someone in next year:

I think that you hit the nail on the head and the fact that Al also sees it gives me hope. Nice write-up Pete,

But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

I think it's

going to be someone we know. If it’s not, it won’t last long because they really don’t know hot to handle Davis. I’m hoping for someone like Madden (I doubt him per say, I’m using him as an example).

Watch it be Art Shell. I remember when he signed his contract for coaching, he was supposed to be head of football operations after his coaching was done and Davis retired. 3 prong set up, Trask, Mark Davis, and Shell. I had to do some digging to support my theory. I knew I saw it somwhere. That’s still not the article I was looking for.

I'd LOVE to bring in the Ronnie Lott Group!!!

Thanks

but, I think I gave my answer pretty clear above and it doesn’t resemble yours.

Like I said

we will see.
