Wildcat

Are there any ways to stop the Wildcat formation? I’ve heard that you can stack the box, but is that it? And are your wide receivers any good? I haven’t heard much about Camarillo and Ginn…

by monta101 on Nov 10, 2008 6:11 PM PST reply actions

Well heres the thing...

The ravens have been the only defenses that were extremely effective against the wildcat. Let’s backtrack a little first, the wildcat is basically a run option without the QB. So normal run defense should be effective. The ravens did a good job filling the gabs and containing the edge. The problem defenses have against the wildcat is pure confusion (they are not really prepared or uncertain) and natural Ronnie brown. Ronnie Brown is an all-purpose runner and his patience to find the hole is really what makes wildcat effective. Not necessarily do you have to stack the box, but if you can stick to your base run fits you should be fine. On a note, stacking the box does not guarantee success against the wildcat, take this for example.

The thing about our receivers is that all of them make plays when they need to. We don’t have that number one like an Andre Johnson or a Larry Fitzgerald, but what we do have is a smart QB that spreads the ball around. Ted Ginn, our “number 1” is a speedster with great hands who is really starting to come on as WR. Camarillo is basically a Wes Welker clone, he doesn’t necessarily have that super sprinter speed (like Ted Ginn) but he has that short intermediate quickness. We have an upcoming TE (many of you probably have him on your fantasy football team) Anthony Fasano. He has really developed a “rapport” with Chad Pennington. If you just have a LB cover him, you will get beat. Lastly we have our running backs. All three, Patrick Cobbs, Ricky Williams, and Ronnie Brown have above average hands and are real threats on passing plays.

In the NFL the any given sunday rule always applies...but since I am a dolphins fan...I must say the Dolphins will undubitably win this game

(lol what else am I supposed to say)

If the raiders want to win this game

1. Stop the running game (this includes the terrifying wildcat)
2. Be able to pressure chad pennington (actually its quite a task to rattle this guy) or else he WILL beat you
3. Make plays on ST

Assuming

that the same D that showed up against Carolina shows up again, we may have 1 and 2 covered. Now if JLH has that bad game out of his system, we just may have # 3 covered.

SOOOO now that leaves the Raiders with…whatever we’re calling an Offense. With Knapp no longer calling the plays, it does seemed we’re more balanced. How is your secondary? It seems Walter has a better grip of the game, and w/ Russell having a bruised bone, we may see Walter at least some of the game. And apparently Super Mario is playing, or so it has been hinted, instead of Harris. So that could lead to possibly better pass protection.

I understand you don’t know any of theses names really being a fin fan (I mean that affectionately) but others on this board will understand. So w/ our run game, and Bush seemingly to be a decent Receiver too. And assuming last week improvement wasn’t a fluke….Where do you stand on Defense?

Oh, and I was supposed to attend the game, however, I could not because my friend couldn’t make it, and he, earlier in the season, though the Raiders could win….

by mikesd1981 on Nov 10, 2008 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

Our secondary is playing a lot better than it did at the beginning of the season

We are not giving up big plays, we are coming up and making tackles, and forcing stops when we really need to. This game (for the raiders offensively) is going to come down to if Walter can beat us. Our rush d is pretty stout (broncos total = 14 yrds) also top 10 in the leauge…so i dont really see the raiders having the same type of running success they did last time we met (when we had the worst run d in the league)

so if walter can come out slinging the ball then raiders have a chance…but other than that…i just see if the dolphins dont make stupid mistakes and mental errors…they will be finee

See

I’m not sure who is playing this game, but if Walter plays, he’s more on target than Russell, in my opinion. Some of my fellow Raiders fan may disagree. It’d be really great if we could see our 3headed monster (Fargas, Bush, D-Mac) but I think we’re limited to Fargas/Bush.

But nonetheless, whatever the outcome may be or who may play, let me be the first Raider fan to wish you good luck in the game.

btw…dont take any offense here

I think russell is hovering on that side of bust…and i was actually impresssed on how walter played…if im not mistaken he was the same guy from 2 years ago who loved fumbling?

Yes

yes, that’s the one. All our QB’s seem to like to fumble. I don’t think the NFL banned use of scotch tape.

Russell, in my opinion (it’s my opinion people, but I’ll back him while he wears the s&b), is no longer hovering on the side of bust. He is one. NOW, keep in mind, I just don’t like him and don’t think he deserves the money he got, and that’s Al’s fault. Russell stunted his own growth.

If we want any chance of winning here, Walter is the man to go with. Walter is FAR from perfect, but look at his numbers against Carolina compared to Russell’s. I also think it has a lot to do w/ the play calling. I saw alot of run plays that opened the passing game. Definitely more balances. Almost like it was planned. But Walter made more completions and found more receivers (who knew we had that many?) than Russell all year.

END RANT

calm down on bashing russell. give him his 3 years your supposed to give a QB to develop. anyone whose watched the raiders play have seen russel make some unbelievable throws. then we have seen the bad ones too. he needs to work on his footwork and thats somthing qbs can fix. give it time mike calm down buddy.

I remember predraft

hearing he had the best physical skillset a qb has had coming out of college in a while…but many would not have drafted him that high because they questioned his work ethic…and i think that is truly coming out (but dont quote me on this because I really do not know much about the raiders)

I haven't

really read much about his off-field work ethic. Like studying field or getting to the complex early to talk w/ the coaches, etc. He’s definitely not like Gannon was who was in the film room constantly. Raiders19494 is right, I’m not being totally fair and I am biased (not color wise) against him. But I do think he should be farther, which some fault is on him. Also when he was drafted and held out, he kinda made it known sorta through his agent that he didn’t want to be a Raider. How true that is? I don’t know. So take it how you want, you know.

Incentive laden contracts.

Wikipedia article on how the cap works.

Incentive bonuses require a team to pay a player additional money if he achieves a certain goal. For the purposes of the salary cap, bonuses are classified as either “likely to be earned”, which requires the amount of the bonus to count against the team’s salary cap, or “not likely to be earned”, which is not counted. A team’s salary cap is adjusted downward for NLTBE bonuses that were earned in the previous year but not counted against that year’s cap. It is adjusted upward for LTBE bonuses that were not earned in the previous year but were counted against that year’s cap.

by the way we’re only paying Russell once :)

I know porter's good, but what about the rest of the LB

and do you think you have anybody who can effectively cover Miller (our TE) effectively? And how is your D-Line doing?

Our D-line is playing well against the run and giving pressure...but they just are not coming up with the sacks...they are batting down balls and forcing errant throws...but no sacks

Our LB crew outside of porter is pretty solid and we have a crazy dreadhead from Florida (Channing Crowder), and he makes plays…Miller will probly be covered by a LB and over the top help by a safety. We shut down Gates to one catch (if reviewed would have been incomplete) so i think we can do it

I think

Miller will be blocking more any way. He’s Russell’s primary target though, and apparently the only one that can catch a ball w/ Russell. I’m really hoping Walter plays, but again, that’s just me. If Henderson plays and steps it up even more, maybe Russell can get some more passes off. Really it’s our O-line that’s killing Russell more than his inaccuracy. They kinda go hand in hand.

I think its a pick your poison type of thing...(again correct me if I am wrong)

Russel → inconsistent…big play or bust type of demeanor…not very careful with the ball on his throws…and leads to picks and inaccurate passes
Walter -
—> doesnt have that much of a big play ability arm wise…but tries to spread the ball around but has fumbling problems

I personally think…RIGHT NOW…that Walter is the better Qb…but what do I know…im not a raiders fan….

what do you think?

but that’s only because of experience. Russell will soon surpass him and I think Russell could become an elite QB if we give him an O-Line and some decent WR

Personnel and coaching

are very important to Russell’s career. It would’ve been nice to have him develop slowly thru Kiffin. Now he is faced with a huge setback because next year = new coach new system. These first few years are crucial for his development and yet I will be surprised if I see much from him next year as well.

by Raider76 on Nov 12, 2008 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

Which

is Al’s fault, and that is killing us. Al wants improvements overnight. Well not everyone is Matt Ryan and the Ravens that rebuild in a year. Or even Miami which improved really well in the offseason. But Walter was in the same predicament really and he’s lightyears ahead of Russell. Not sure why Kiffin didn’t like him.

Actually

Russell has the deep ball arm, just not the accuracy. And he doesn’t spread the ball around like Walter does. Russell doesn’t protect the ball or make great decisions when the sack is coming, but that will come w/ time.

What happened to him

is he sucks. sucks. sucks. sucks. sucks. sucks. Did I mention he sucks?

He’s dropping the balls and under achieving. He’ll be released in the offseason probably. Yet another person Kiffin, the first HC of this season, didn’t want….. But Walker has always been overrated. And rarely had a healthy full season. Sadly, our TE is the leader in receptions. Jonnie Lee Higgins (JLH) had one good reception for 80 some yards for a TD some games ago. He’s our return man. He had a bad case of dropsies last week, but when he gets that ball and moves, he’s dangerous. All our WR’s, it seems, suck. But now, again. Take that how you will when you look @ the stats last week. Even one of our RB’s.. Michael Bush.. had receptions.

You asked before

about salary caps. Well releasing Hall saved us on that too because we waivered him.

I'm gonna say this again and

then I’ll stop the Russell bashing….for now.

Walter came in w/ Art Shell and company. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE, did I mention HORRIBLE? o-line. We won 2 games that year (thank you Defense…their best year by far). Russell came in, technically, this year. MUCH BETTER O-line. Walter did not play one full game last year at all. Okay, the reason for all this back story.

Walter, in his first start since 2006, and almost 0, that’s zero, that’s none, regular season starts, last week spread the ball around, had actual drive series and used his check down guy. People can argue Walter had experience bla bla bla…but that experience would be face down in the field. Poor guy would in the whirlpool for a week I remember reading after the games.

ok

Russell, who has started and played through the entire games except last week throws to Miller or Walker. Miller catches the ball most of the time, Walker doesn’t. Oh and Ashlie Aelie (spelling?). Now this is a MUCH MUCH better O-line…well until the O-line coach became our HC..but still. So now people will say that WR’s are not getting open, and it’s true but not so much as some would like you believe. But you have to wonder, how he’s not finding the same WR’s that Walter found.

Now, now Walter is not the cure for what ails the Raiders. Russell may be in time. Russell isn’t getting a fair chance either w/ the whole coach carousel. But Walter is making better decisions.

So, now I’m not calling JaMarcus a bust here. I’m spelling out my opinion on the two QB’s and who gives us a better chance of winning this week. It is what it is. I think russell screwed himself last year, and now i think he’s taking the screwin. So, with that in mind, calling a Russell is bust is really not fair, I’ll admit it. But Walter went through just as much turmoil, if not more w/ the Shell/BnB era, that I think we have to stop giving Russell so much slack now.

finsfaxtor you still here?

You asked about Walker? He’s out of the rest of the season. We’ll probably release him after this year.

Well

he’s on IR so he may have an injury clause like Hall did.

But they can actually come to an IR settlement w/ him, and I’m not entirely sure how that works, but I think it’s less than his contract for the year or something like that.

Lately this season

alot. After the whole Kiffin situation. It didn’t take long after that for people to realize, after we really started crapping out.

How happy are you guys with your d-line? I know you guys paid a lot of money for one person...but will your d-line be able to get penetration and pressure CP?

I would say Jeckyl and Hyde!

I think as far as d-tackles go Warren has outplayed Kelly. Our best pass rusher has missed the last 5 or 6 games. We have some talent in our end positions. I would say Kalimba Edwards has been a pleasant surprise and our rookie Trevor Scott is showing he is a good speed rusher but he needs to put on more muscle because at times he gets overpowered. I think we can get pressure on the QB if we can get good penetration from our tackles. Warren and Kelly need to demand double teams in order for us to be successful. Unfortunately for us we will be so concerned about the wildcat offense that Rob Ryan will be conservative in his playcalling.

His brother Rex Ryan (with the ravens) did a real nice job in shutting down the wildcat, you think they've been talking?

Probably but

Rob won’t listen! Rex is a more aggressive playcaller than his brother.
