Thoughts on Russell, Cable, and the Season Overall Finished
I'd just like to share some random scattered thoughts so i apologize if this article doesn't look as official as my others usually do. Also I may ramble on and on so get used to that throughout.
-Russell this season-
Russell has not had a great season, but it's not bad by any means. With an O-Line closely resembling that of the year 2006 and receivers that struggle to get open or catch, Russell's had to BE the offense (of course there's the backs but let's focus on Russell) Russell started out pretty sloppy. Often throwing the ball away and taking a bunch of sacks. But he never threw interceptions like Walter did when under the same circumstances. Russell has now grown into a very good looking QB. If he started out the season playing like he is now, ESPN might be talking more about him than Cassel. Russell still has great mobility in the pocket and can very easily roll out. He has great zip on his passes and has developed a rapport with Miller. As the season's developed, he's taken more shots downfield and Cable's starting to mix thing up on offense with play action. But more on that later. I give Russell a solid B on his season thus far. He's far from a bust.
-Cable's newfound offense-
Cable's offense started out horrid at best. Flat out sucking on third down and in short yardage. Passing the football was out of the question and Fargas was only getting 1 yard a carry. But now his offense looks much better than it did in the Saints game when he took over. It looks like Kiffin's the coach again. Maybe that's because Knapp isn't calling the plays, maybe it's because McFadden's back, or maybe it's because Javon Walker's out and Curry's in. Who knows, but whatever it is, it's working. Harris isn't making AS MANY mistakes, and even if he does, Henderson's more than capable of stepping in. He's finally realized that running the football on Carlisle and Green's side works. McFadden's return also helps the run game. Two TD's last week is very good for Darren. If only he hadn't gotten turf toe, we would've seen more of that (damn Cable and Kiffin for running him so much despite the injury)
Cable's also mixing it up on offense now. Quick tosses to the outside to McFadden, running it up the middle then bouncing outside with Run DMC, play-action passing, halfback option passes, and whatever he decides to try out next week. Last week was the most productive and balanced this offense has been all season. And with the chiefs coming up next week, it can only get better.
-The Resurgent Defense-
The story of the season will be the Raider's defense. This is THE best it's been since 06. We've been getting pressure with and without Burgess. Warren and Kelly are beasts in the middle. Scott has played effectively as a 6th. round rookie and Richardson is arguably better than he was last year. Edwards is playing even better than Clemons did last year. The D-Line was our biggest worry this year, now it's one of our strengths. Whoever plays at OLB opposite Howard is effective. Whether it be Thomas, Brown, Williams, or, shockingly, Alston. Morrison and Howard have both struggled this year but I think it's a fluke. Though they definitely need to work on their tackling come next year. The secondary has been very good this year with the exception of Huff, who can't cover TE's to save his life. I give him one more year, if you put him at nickel/dime corner in place of Routt who plays either nickel/dime depending on which one of huff plays. Hall sucked, and now Chris Johnson has his old job as starter. And Johnson, who was once the dime corner, is now outplaying the former Hall. Let's hope he can play like that next week when he'll be covering Bowe.
Now you might be thinking, if our defense is supposedly so good, then why is it not reflected in the rankings? We give up to many big plays underneath. Tackling is still an issue from last year that's hanging over from last year. This time it's not Stu missing tackles, it's Morrison and Howard. True they are pass defense specialists, but when it comes to tackling a receiver they flat out suck. We also give up big plays due to Ryan's porous prevent defense. If we even lead by a field goal, it's off to using prevent. Ryan, it doesn't work. Go back to what was working so well the first four weeks, blitz the LB. If Howard and Morrison aren't contributing in the pass game, send them in to blitz. It worked very well against KC, Buffalo, and San Diego; why not use it again? But with two safeties, 24 sacks (tied for 10th), and 12 INT (8th.), I'm not complaining too much.
-Consistency-
The Raiders have been inconsistent. You don't know what Raiders team is going to show up to each game. You might see the Raiders that beat the AFC's hottest team in the Jets. Or the Raiders that rolled over and died at the feet of the Falcons. This team needs to stay consistent instead of being on and off between barely losing, being blown out, or blowing out the opponent. When the Raiders become consistent, they'll become successful. Teams like Pittsburgh, New England, Indianapolis, and more have been so successful from being consistent. And consistency begins with the coaches and the gameplan. And those two things have been consistent over the years. Consistently inconsistent. Once Davis realizes that giving a coach more than a year and a half actually makes your team better, we'll be better. Though I wouldn't hold my breath.
There ya go folks, can't wait for the KC game. We blew them out in Arrowhead, now let's give our home crowd a great game. See ya on the blog.

There is a Spot:
Over in the corner of the Lot nearest the Warrior Arena and 880 where my boys grill. They call themselves the Geurilla Grillas and have a sign that says as much.
I won’t be there until noon though and they are usually closed up by 12:30

I agree with you on Russell
but you must remember that a QB is given plays and frankly, prior to last Sunday, the Raiders were vanilla, run twice and then expect Russell to pass for the first down on 3rd down and long. No QB is effective when the other team knows that they are going to pass on 3rd and long. Last week for the first time it was pass on first, get in a short situation then run. They threw in the wildcat, a quick pass to McFadden, a short screen, quite a few wrinkles which had not been utilized before. Naturally, Russell looked better in that situation. The return of McFadden was a major step forward, no question about that, even though his final stats were not remarkable.
You can’t blame Kiffin or Cable for playing McFadden early, a turf toe is a season long issue, and I am sure McFadden would tell you now that it still hurts, it is just manageable now. All you need to do is watch LT in SD, he is a shell of his former self. His problem is turf toe, and getting a little older.
Football is a team game, the defense is dependent upon the offense, and special teams are a very important component. The offense is dependent on both of the above.
Did the Raiders turn the corner? I think so but we will know more a week from Thursday in SD. They will be throwing the kitchen sink at the offensive line, can they hold off enough to give Russell the time to throw darts?
If Cable goes back to running Fargas on 1st and 2nd downs I fear for Russell’s life, but if he continues to throw reverses, wild cat, throw on 1st, then I like our chances. I would love to see them play Bush at fullback and throw short outs to him and see what he can do in the open field.
By the way, I feel that losing Oren O’Neal was a major loss to this season and part of the reason the off tackle runs have not been as successful as last year. He was a blocking machine. It is clear that Lawton is quite a few steps below O’Neal as a blocker.
by Laoren on Nov 25, 2008 9:55 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
O'Neal and McFadden are why the run game isn't in the top 5 right now
O’Neal blocked on every run play to a very high degree. Every successful run we had last year was because he got a monster block. McFadden’s injuries have also hurt the team as Kiff and Cable tried to play him despite his stumbling on the field. Bush NEEDS to play fullback or he will not contribute in any way to this team for the remainder of the season. He’s the best blocker of our RB and the biggest. Use him on fullback runs on short-yardage. Have both him and McFadden on the field and see how scared the defense gets. Bush needs to suck it up, be a man, and play FB.

it's better than using Fargas
Fargas has the tough running, but not the size for short yardage. I wish Cable would realize that.

Next year's offense
Just imagine a health o’neal teamed up with the three headed monster. Drew Carter will also be available with the stud in Zach Miller managing the short yardage drops and crossing routes. Hopefully a new LT and some O-line changes will help bring this offense around. We have things going in the right direction, just need to capitalize on the opportunities that are given. Go Raiders.

that's without a drafted WR
which should be our #1 priority in the draft. But I question if Bush will return. You have to remember they tried to trade him. So he’s questionable. As is Carter, after all Lelie has done a nice job in his place.

Trade Bush and a draft pick
to the Giants for Plaxico. Then use the draft to pick up O and D linemen.

if only......
you really think we need D-Linemen. The D-Line’s great this year. We need to get a new MLB and move Morrison to the other OLB spot opposite Howard.

We are thin on the d-line.
With the big guys in Warren,Kelly and Sands we need more linemen to keep them fresh. I do agree that we need a MLB. Morrison has a hard time shedding blocks and moving him outside we can utilize his speed and playmaking abilities (blitz, blitz, blitz).

I don't think we should draft on the D-Line
I think we can pick up a serviceable fourth DT in free agency.

There aren't too many
out there. If we want a decent one we will have to pay more just to get them toplay in Oakland. Unless we pay big money I’m afraid many free agents are going to shy away from the Raiders. We aren’t that appealing now.

I think we could find somebody
he doesn’t have to be amazing. Just good enough to fill in for the big guys when they need a breather. Anybody would be better than Wakefield.

Yup
dat would be smart but I haven’t seen any standouts in college MLBs. If not a MLB a reciever would be OK. Get some Like Darryl Crabtree. Or we could even get a new Left Tackle

I say receiver in the first
left tackle in the second. After that a mix of O-Line depth, LB, DB depth, and maybe another receiver.

Bush and Carter
Bush has no trade value right now because he has been totally underused. The fact that is only now begrudgingly willing to play fullback also doesn’t help. Maybe he will get some more carries in these last five games and show something to get his value up. Otherwise, if the Raiders do trade him and get anything less than a 4th, it will be a loss.
As for Carter, he signed a one year contract, so he is a free agent next year anyways.

he deserves it.

U Like The Idea Of
Bush being traded. Personally, I don’t think he plays up to his weight. He seems to big to hit holes and is weak for his weight. However, he is a rookie.
I forgot all about Drew Carter. Man, it would be nice to have him right now. Ashly did good. For one game though. Shaz is my favorite receiver from the pack. Young and always trying to make a play. He even saved an interception a couple times.
Javon needs to get the fuck out of this team. Weak ass punk.
In the slot, we have ourselves our breakthrough receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins. He is dangerous.

I don't want bush traded
but Davis did.
Chaz huh? I like Curry the best. But he’ll be gone next year. I hope Watkins takes his place as possession receiver. Watkins just disappeared. It’s weird considering what he did for us in training camp.

I want
Curry to maybe stay. andI want Chaz and Johnie Lee to be our 2nd and 3rd. Watkins and (do we still have Arman Shields) to be 4th. Five Wide is doing to much for the raiders. And we definitely NEED to do more WILDCAT formations we have a player that is built for it. (McFadden)

I want Curry to stay so bad
he just having a bad year but he’s gotten better. He still has the skills to make the tough catches. If not, Watkins can develop into that role. Love Todd’s dreads.

For
one game. We did good against Denver IN Denver. We looked really good. But let’s remember it’s one game and means nothing if we revert back to our former selves in the next game. Good play calling. Nice Half-back pass option w/ Bush that worked. Rusell looked decent for the first time since the Jets game. That’s another thing. If he can’t stay consistent then he’s useless. If we finish this season w/ 5 or 6 wins then let’s be happy and build. If we fall back to crap then we’re getting our hopes up for nothing.
Sorry to be a buzz kill. But as good as this win was and as we looked….we have to keep it going.

Agreed
I was weary at how well we looked passing the ball because Denver is not that good at rushing the passer. It does make me think how our season would’ve turned out if we played like this in our opener.

the big thing was
we kept the #3 offense to only 10 points.

Johnnie Lee
is a possible Devin Hester(considering he isn’t what he used to be). He has returned to punts for TDs in two weeks. Hopefully he keeps it up to get a record

No, Higgins could be better
He could be more complete. Hester still sucks at receiver and Chicago doesn’t realize it. Meanwhile, Higgins kicks ass at receiver and he’s also a beastly returner. Not quite on par as a returner, but but a much better receiver.
