Kiffin to coach Tennessee
Lane Kiffin has been named coach at Tennessee, per Foxsports. I was watching the end of the Colorado Nebraska game on ABC when I noticed the news crawl at the bottom of the screen announce it. The Fox report says the terms of Kiffin's contract were not available, but the ABC/ESPN newscrawl says Kiffin will be paid more than the Raiders were paying him. I, as well as many others in Raiders Nation, think this is what Kiffin was angling for all along, a plum college head coaching position. I was neither a detractor nor supporter of Kiffin when he was fired by the Raiders. Given that Monte Kiffin is his dad, and Jon Gruden was available to advise him prior to taking the Raiders job, I'm sure Kiffin knew what he was getting himself into. On the other hand, Al Davis hired someone who had no business being an NFL head coach, though Kiffin is certainly bright enough. It was also clear, to me at least, that Kiffin was trying to get himself fired this year, so that he would at least have a claim on his remaining contract salary. Everybody here will agree that Al Davis has got to make a wiser choice of head coach after this season. But I wonder if the fallout of both Gruden's and Kiffin's departures from the Raiders makes this position so undesirable that the pool of candidates will once again consist of failed head coaches desperately looking for another chance to coach a team (Hello, Jim Fassel!) or somebody else we've never heard of. Oh, well, I had a great Thanksgiving and I'm looking forward to this Sunday's game against the Chiefs. I'm going, but since the game is a sell out, I'll also get to record it. I'm hoping it's a keeper recording, like last week's Bronco game.

The first name that comes to mind for the next Raider coach
is Charlie Weis. He’s flamed out at Notre Dame but it’s clearly more of a college vs pro thing than a football knowledge thing. He’s not charismatic or a much of a motivator which counts in college but not in the pro’s. He’d be innovative, flexible to personnel and studious, all things that are super important in the NFL.
I think Fassel would be the best choice of the retreads, but he’s still a retread. What I’m worried about is that it’s only the retreads that will consider working for Al. Why would someone like Spagnuolo, who is going to be courted by every team with an opening, want to come here? It’s another reason why I like Weis, his rep is a little tarnished after his stint with Notre Dame and he’s more likely to consider it.

now you're talking my language
my college team’s coach going to my pro team. That’d kick ass.

I can't believe you could even put Charlie Weis and the Raiders in the same sentence!
He’s done nothing notable in ND (will most likely get smoked this week by USC) and would probably clash incredibly with Big Al!

NO NO NO!
I can’t stand Charlie Weis and Notre Dame (sorry KA1Z3R). He is stubborn and you and I both know that he would not get along with Al Davis.

The opposite of Al is what makes him appealing
if you disagree with Davis on football issues you’re going to end up right 9 times out of 10. It’d be interesting if Weis could flash his rings and get enough respect from Al to make some hay.
I know he hasn’t been successful at Notre Dame but again, I think it has more to do with the college game compared to the pro game than it has to do with Weis’s football acumen. The guy isn’t any less smart today than he was when he left New England and he could make huge strides in modernizing Raider football. And he’s been successful without needing loads of talent, he could potentially make an impact his first year here.
He’s not the only option, and there are a lot of cases to be made why he’s not the best option, but as of right now he’d be my pick.

Gee, maybe Weis does makes sense
When you first menioned his name, I thought no way! His Notre Dame experience would make him one of those desperate retreads. But there is a big difference between college and pros. And maybe, just maybe, Al Davis is desperate enough himself that he’ll be willing to step aside a bit and let Weis show if he learned anything during his successful run with the Patriots. At least Weis is worth considering.

I don't know if we have any Cowherd listeners
I disagree with most everything he says but his Weis analysis is pretty spot on. What makes a good pro coach is almost contradictory to what would make you a good college coach. Charisma, recruiting, schmoozing the boosters, handling the restrictions on practicing and the other activities a student athlete has is what makes a college coach. Locking yourself in a room to watch film for 16 hours a day and spending another 6 hours on a practice field, grinding, dedication, an an almost idiot savant genius in x’s and o’s is what makes a great NFL coach. Pete Carrol is the first guy, Weis/Belichick/Parcells are the second guy.

The opposite of Al
never lasts long in Oakland. Charlie Weis would be a disaster waiting to happen if he signed with Oakland. You thought the constant back and forth between Kiffin and Al was bad this year, this would be much worse. This in turn would have a big effect on the younger players on the squad because it will further happen the players development. Any strong coach will steer clear of the Oakland Raiders because Al is too hands on for any owner.

Weis would be good
was he not the offensive (or defensive not sure which) coordinator for a Super Bowl winning Pats team? I think he’d be good. Though if Cable wins against KC and SD, then i think he should get a shot for next year’s job.

Offensive
And I don’t think Cable has any business being head coach of this team. He doesn’t bring anything to the table and interim coaches rarely become good head coaches.

you have to admit though
if Cable leads us to victory over KC and SD, then he deserves some thought.
See? Weis was the off. coordinator for the Patriots. A Patriots super bowl team as well. Maybe he could help with our offense.

Think he has any "for cause" clauses in this contract
Making more $$$ (supposedly) and getting possibly 2 great coaches in Kiffin (elder) and Ed Oregoan to possibly come along.
He will do fine, plus I heard he was a top notch recruiter.

Fassel
was the best choice that i heard of so far. Weis sounds horrible. Sorry Kaiz.

Fassel is a good choice and
will probably be our coach next year. But I still think if Weis is kicked out of ND, at least bring him in for the off. coordinator or something. If he can make the plays for the Super Bowl pats, imagine what he could do for us. He’s like the Monte Kiffin of offense.
