Another name to the list of potential coaches!
It is being reported on Profootballtalk that Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is a possible name for the head coaching job here in Oakland.
Something in the back of my head keeps screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't do it Al. I really hope this doesn't happen. On Sunday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Raiders owner Al Davis is interested in possibly hiring Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride to be the team’s next head coach.
Gilbride, who has spent nearly five full seasons with the Giants, worked as quarterback Eli Manning’s position coach for three seasons before taking over the offense.
And Gilbride fits the profile of a potential Raiders coach. The 57-year-old had one prior stint as an NFL head coach, losing 16 of 22 with the Chargers before being fired six games into the 1998 season. In the following ten years, his name has yet to percolate back to the short-list of head-coaching candidates — possibly due to his failure in San Diego and possibly because his name still triggers for many images of the fist to the face he took from Buddy Ryan when both were working for the Oilers in the earlt 1990s.
“He has no business coaching the pros,” Ryan later said about Gilbride. “He should be selling insurance. . . . He’s a wimp.”
Still, Gilbride has presided over the developed of Eli Manning, and Gilbride might provide the Raiders with the last, best chance at salvaging the career of JaMarcus Russell, the first overall pick in the 2007 draft, three years after Eli was the top selection.
Of course, if Gilbride were to take the job in Oakland, Davis might finally have to part ways with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, whose father is Buddy Ryan.

That's mind
boggling like Gannon says. That he isn’t already doing that. That’s the coaches fault and Russell’s fault.

I never pay attention to rumors
started by some half drunk sportswriter who has to fill a column and write about something.
Even the comment of it being the last best chance to salvage Russell is absurd on the face of it. The number of QB’s who have struggled in their first full year are numerous, and taking into account that Russell is still the youngest QB in the league allows for a little patience. I do expect Al to clean house as he must but that does not guarantee any sort of success. I cannot imagine there is anyone more distraught than Al Davis at this time. He has spent a ton of money, tried to go young with Kiffin and despite what you read every day in the paper gave Kiffin a ton of latitude, hired a bunch of his buddies, and allowed him to let guys go he didn’t want to let go. In return Kiffin was looking for a college job 3 months into the first season. Don’t be surprised to see Kiffin fail at Tennessee and that fall will be a lot harder than it was with the Raiders.

The fall will be harder because one can't really fall with the Raiders considering their already
dead and buried no matter who the players or coaches are.

The problem with Al spending money
was that it wasn’t spent wisely. I really don’t think Al gave Kiffn as much latitude as you are saying because if that was the case JaMarcus wouldn’t be our quarterback right now. We don’t know for sure if Kiffin was looking into the Arkansas job because it was one of many rumors that went on during he season. If the rumor is true than I feel Kiffin should’ve resigned at the end of the season.

I really don't see Kiffin failing at Tennesse either.
Tennesse will be a pretty solid team.

This tells me 2 things
1) Kiffin is still mad @ Davis and taking another jab at him…I don’t really agree w/ that
2) Coaches are so sick of the way Oakland is being ran they don’t feel the need to show respect and finish their contract and/or give notice.
I know where I work when I find a way out of here, I won’t be giving any notice. A job is a job. If your boss doesn’t show you respect and the company (or organization) doesn’t either. Why should you?

Kiffin is the new Shannahan!
Will find a way to screw Al Davis any chance they can.

Why is taking coaches he hired in the first place and is familiar with
taking a jab at Davis? Is hiring Monte away from Tampa taking a jab at Gruden?

It's not
that he’s taking them per say. It’s that he’s asking him to join them before the season is even over.

I would SO take him as QB coach
look how well Eli’s playing. And as an offensive coordinator would be good too. The Giants like to run about 60% of the time, would be nice to have him come in and finally let a running team RUN THE BALL

Demotion?
Can’t see Gilbride accepting a position as QB coach after being OC for the reining Super Bowl champions and are tied for the lead in the NFC again this year. Even to leave and come be the OC here he’d have to be the highest paid OC in the league.
Also, bringing him in means a lot of philosophy changes (again) on offense, including a move away from zone blocking, which the Giants do not utilize. It’s easy to have better success with one of the best offensive lines in the league, its much harder to do with our line. My vote is still for Al Saunders, with possibly simplifying his playbook a bit.
"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

Agree about the demotion
but not about the zone blocking scheme. Theres no reason he couldn’t run the same offense with a different blocking scheme. Whether he’d want to or not I don’t know, but it wouldn’t be mutually exclusive.
But why would we even want Gilbride in the first place? Is he bring Jacobs, Ward, Plax and that o-line with him?
by RaiderPete on Dec 16, 2008 11:00 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
at this point anything's better than what we have
but I thought the Giants used ZB. Hmm….. Yeah you’re right he wouldn’t take the demotion but I was just saying I would take him as a QB coach.
Raiderpete, do you really want Plax over here?

Well, I mainly said it to point out that Gilbride has been a product of his players
but I don’t think I’d have a problem with Plax coming to Oakland. A lot of his issues have stemmed from Coughlin’s strict rules, he’s been proactively punished a lot. He comes with the average high profile WR whinings, but it’s not like he’s been a hindrance to his team. As far as the gun incident goes my only complaint is that he was stupid. Get a holster, wear it around your ankle, and maybe look into getting it registered in the right town. But with all the violence around professional athletes (that list somehow leaves out Darrent Williams) it seems almost negligent NOT to carry a weapon.
by RaiderPete on Dec 17, 2008 12:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I will have to agree with you
in that he is a product of his players. Eli really wasn’t considered a great QB until after he won the Super Bowl. Until then it looked like San Diego (and I still do) got the better of the deal between the two.
by Raider76 on Dec 17, 2008 1:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't blame him for the gun
I agree that’s fine for athletes to carry guns. But he’s just seems to be fined too often and I don’t want to see that rub off to younger players on the team.

But the the rules
apply to athletes like they do you and me. Get a permit to carry and make sure the gun is registered.

If Saunders turned
down a HC position because he didn’t want to deal w/ Davis, do you think he’ll come as OC?

I could see him in both roles
but I’d rather have him at head coach than anyone previously stated.

Reallly, does it matter who the coach is?
I’d say that while Al Davis remains in control of the team, the coach doesn’t matter. Not until Davis is willing to face his failures and actually allow an organization to be built under him, but not subject to his whims and wishes, will the Raiders return to prominence. I’m not saying it can’t be done. Somehow, the Raiders flourished under Gruden and Allen; rebuilt from a loser to a Super Bowl contender. Can Davis see how that occurred? Even if he can recognize it, can he find the new Gruden and Allen? Personally, I don’t think Davis will change. So why not bring on Gilbride. At least he’s got the credentials to run an offense and to work with a young quaterback, and that may be what the Raiders need most.
