With the 7th (or 8th) pick ...
The Raiders select ??????????????????
Well season's over and a nice couple of wins to give us a glimmer of hope for 2009. Obvisiously the Raiders have a number holes to fix so who do they select?
A Left Tackle to man JMarc's blindside? There is defenitily a number of players this year in Andre Smith, Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe, and Jason Smith topping the list.
A wide receiver to give JMarc another weapon at his disposal like Michael Crabtree.
Do they go to the defensive side of the ball and get a Defensive end to put pressure on the QB Brian Arapko or Michael Johnson? How bout a run stuffer Bj Raji.
Or does al draft the fastest player in the draft and grab a DB like Malcolm Jenkins or Vontae Davis?
We shall see ....
Thoughts???

I want a big time linebacker
In my view that is the one thing they are missing most. I think all the pieces are there on offense, but a playmaker at linebacker is what they need most.

Defensive help
I agree offense is coming along. We need DL or LB help. The most pressing needs are stopping the run and pressure on the qb. Make the qb throw, and throw faster than they are used to and our already good defensive backfield plays at another level. We can get a lineman with our later picks.

I Agree With You
But, our offense is in dire need of a good LT. Mario is legit enough for LT, but I rather have him at RT, taking the place of Green. There is a good class of LT in this draft so I say go grab the best one in my opinion, Monroe. He can work on his strength while in the NFL, but this kids speed is a gift. He can turn into a special player. Good in Pass and at Run. He could probably outrun the running back when blocking.

I dont think we disagree too much
Even though I wouldnt dislike Monroe or another LT, I just think all the stud teams in the playoffs are teams who play defense first and run the ball second. Offensive teams arent real special this year. Thats why I say def first. if there are a lot of LT in the draft, do you think any would fall to the second rnd?

Not the Special Ones
I mean Monroe is just a rare species of a LT. Someone like him won’t come for a while

I’d take any of Monroe, Smith, or Oher. I don’t really carw who we draft in the first just as long as it’s either a WR, LT, or MLB.

Draft
There are bigger holes to fill than linebackers. My guess is that Crabtree is off of the board by now. I’d like a big play receiver or an offensive lineman with the first pick.

Michael Oher!
We need an offensive linemen. Looking at our young recievers the past two games I think we should give them time to develop and build up our offense via the o-line. Henderson played well the last two games but lookiing at what Ryan Clady has done for the Broncos we need to draft wisely and give JaMarcus time in the pocket.

Thank you
We need a legitimate LT – draft this guy and put him right into the starting lineup.

Oher Or Monroe
I am happy with either. Oher is a better blocker, but Monroe has crazy legs for a linemen.

Big changes
The Raiders will definently be getting a major refresh on the coaching staff. 19 out of the 20 assistant coaches, all except WR’s coach James Lofton, contracts are run out. I don’t look for Al Davis to resign all these guys after such a disastrous season. Whoever gets appointed to being our head coach better be ready to produce big results in little time because the pressure to succeed will so great that failure will not be tolerated as it always is with Oakland. But in order to help a coach to succeed here, some player upgrades need to be made first. Kwame Harris, Javon Walker, Ronald Curry, Cornell Green, and possibly Michael Huff all need to be released. Tommy Kelly needs to take a pay cut. Nnamdi Asomugha, Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard, Derrick Burgess, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Michael Bush, Ashley Lelie, and Justin Miller all need contract extensions. In the draft we need to get offensive line, a wide receiver, a free safety, a defensive tackle, and a strong side linebacker. Or these positions could be acquired through free agency but we could use a good fullback behind O’neal and a good tight end behind Miller.
Obviously though it all has to start with the coaches and the scouts to make it happen in 09. After watching this season, the Raiders blew a few games in the 4th quarter which could’ve led to us winning the division even though we played pretty bad this year. We were only 3 games out of first place which can be something for us to build on.

we pick 7th
so by then most likely crabtree will be picked up by the seahawks or somthing. either way i dont think we should take a WR because we can find somthing decent in the free agents. we need o-line help badly or a pass rusher. another thing we could use is another DB. most pressing need though is oline and dline

this all depends on who we pick up in free agency
right now I’d take Crabtree because our O-Line looked REALLY good versus the Bucs. Like I said it’s too early too be thinking about this in my opinion.
He’s a great idea I’ve had, why not Percy Harvin. Other than some injury problems this season, Harvin’s just as much a big play guy as Crabtree and is versatile like McFadden. Harvin can play WR, RB, QB, KR, even a little bit of DB. You put Harvin and D-Mac on the same field and the defense will be so preoccupied with them and Miller that someone will be wide open for Russell.
There’s also the point that Laoren made, we need a LOT of help at LB. Howard and Morrison aren’t cutting it in the run game. I think we need to move Morrison to OLB and get a big man for the middle. Either a free agent or draft pick. Hell why not trade Burgess (I still think we really should) for Mike Peterson or someone to that effect. I would really like to see Peterson in a Raiders jersey manning the middle. Right now the Jags appear to be not so fond of Peterson and I wouldn’t be surprised if they released him. If they don’t, I still say we trade for him. Peterson is one of the best run stoppers in the league. Put him at MLB and I guarantee he’d make our run D a whole lot better.

But from the draft, w need a LT. Like someone said earlier, look at how good Glady looked for the Broncos. We need someone just like that

Good thing
we are drafting 7th because by that time Crabtree will be gone which will force us to draft a lineman. Hopefully an offensive lineman.

I Know
I am sort of glad to know this. I rather have Eugene Monroe than Crabtree. I mean, he has speed for Al Davis and he is pretty good.

I think our run D issues lie at LB
there’s a lot of missed tackles at the second level which in turn causes the big runs. Neither Howard nor Morrison have the strength or size to effectively tackle. As previously stated, I still believe in trading Burgess for Mike Peterson or a second/first round pick (whichever we can get)
We also our forgetting a need for a good free safety. I have officially given up on huff ever living up to his 1st. round draft selection. He’s a bust and has not contributed very much in his three years with Oakland. If we keep him, we should move him to CB and trade Routt. If we don’t keep Huff, we should trade Huff and keep Routt. We must keep one of the two (if not both) because we need quality nickel and dime corners. Nnamdi and Johnson are clearly the starters but behind them, talent is think (though Baker has shined)
Point is, we have a LOT of options this year and every option seems like a good choice. The draft will be incredibly interesting. Will Davis draft for speed, or draft for need? Will we draft a LB, WR, OT, DT, or DE? I can’t wait to see this draft.

LB is part of the problem
but a good DT takes on the extra linemen which frees up the LB’s to make plays. Our LB’s have a hard time shedding the blocks as is. I have faith in our young recievers. JLH has shown us he can be a playmaker. Plus he is bringing that swagger back on offense. His endzone dances get me hyped. Schilens has potential and I would also like to see what Arman Shields can do. Give JaMarcus some help on the line so he has time for his recievers to get open.
