Coaching: Head Coach
Do the Raiders really need a new coach? Is Tom Cable not doing his part? I think about this everyday.
We all know he ended the season with a 3-3 record, but he did manage to take our losing mentality away from us. He turned a team that had no respect in the league, to a team that prevented the Bucaneers from making playoffs, causing division rivals, the Bronocos, to hit a downfall by manhandling them at their homefield, and murdering a team that beat the best team in the league, the Texans, who were also on a 4 game win streak.
Tom Cable believed in the team that had nothing to play for and now, we have confidence in our team. A part of me wants to keep him and a part of me wants him back at the line so a new coach can come in.
The reason I want a new coach is Tom Cable needs some work with play calling at times. He is a little crazy at times. Also, sometimes I think his football IQ is not very high. I mean, it is high, but other coaches just know more than him.
So, do we need a new coach?
via www.panthers.com

His last season in the NFL, he was 14-2. He coached the rival Chargers well, but couldn't get a playoff win. He has a good coaching philosophy and a winning career. His career stats are 205-139-1. That's 205 wins, 139 losses, and 1 tie. He knows how to work both the run game and the pass game together. He pretty much made the Chargers. He will improve our offense big time while helping the defense out. He has the power to balance out our offense and make us a playoff contender.
via i.a.cnn.net
We all know Steve Mariucci is a quarterbacks coach. He worked with Steve Young, Brett Favre and many more. He would work wonders with Jamarcus Russell and just make the whole offense a lot better, which is what we need. He has a very high football IQ and knows how to call plays well. He can make accurate Quarterbacks out of anyone and teach them how to scramble. He may be the best coach to go with if we want to develop Russell.
via i.a.cnn.net
Yes, we know he sent a letter to Al Davis saying he is interested in the head coaching job. This means he has respect for Al Davis, which Al loves. However, this would mean the return of Jim Fassel to the Raiders. He was a Offensive Coordinator from 1990-1992 for the Raiders. He works with the offense most of the time, but he has worked with some great defenses in his time. For example, the Ravens and Giants. We would be very good with Fassel because he is tough on his players like Jon Gruden was. He will make sure penalties are gone from the team. Discipline is the name of the game with Fassel and we need it badly.
He also wants to be the Raiders next head coach. He has done an okay job at Stanford and is looking to make it to the NFL. His college record is 38-21, which is ok in college. It could be better. Also, he worked with the Raiders in 2002-2003. He was the quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant coach. He was there during the glory days. So, can he return us there? He is sort of like a Lane Kiffin though. However, I think he understands how Al Davis works.

I picked Fassel
because of is agressiveness. (Spell Check) I rather get Marriuci but there is a low chance of him coming here. And now that Martz of the Whiners is fired we should pick him up in the off season too

No Martz!
He had a great running back in Frank Gore and he didn’t utilize him. Plus his offense is very sophisticated and it might be too much for JaMarcus to grasp. Walter might fit in his system.

Agreed
Martz is a DO NOT WANT. The Raiders have enough in-fighting with injecting this asshat into the mix (which means Davis will probably hire him tomorrow).

yeah I know but
we should learn after the Kwame Harris incident to not get anybody who was fired by the 49ers.

Of the choices listed, I'd take Mariucci
From your write-up:
He may be the best coach to go with if we want to develop Russell.
The Raiders have made a significant financial investment in Russell, so the best choice would be a coach who will maximize his talent.
As for the other guys:
Cable – I’m not willing to let that stupid fake-field goal play which probably cost us the Chiefs game.
Schittenheimer – How will he get his team up for “Raider Week” when he is coaching the Raiders? Plus, he can’t win a playoff game to save his life career. The idea of this guy coaching the Raiders after years of supposedly hating them makes me want to puke.
Fassel – the Rams just went 2-10 with him as coach. No thanks.
Harbaugh – He just signed an extension with Stanford, so he isn’t coming.

not so fast
the extension was offered to him but he has not signed it. Al Davis going to meet with him this week to discuss th job. He’s also talking to Gilbride of the Giants and some Raiders guy who was the head coach at USC for two years. He also has a meeting set up with Cable.

I picked Cable
forget the fake field goal and look at what he’s done and who he’s beat while coaching Oakland. He’s beat what was at the time a great Jets team, the surprisingly good Texans, the playoff contending Bucs at Tampa, and a playoff contending Broncos team at Denver. He’s had 4 wins in 12 games which is much better than kiffin’s 5 wins in 20 games. The players like him and we need the consistency. And if it weren’t for that onside kick against the Texans we might not have won that game. I think that offsets the fake field goal.

I concur
with this statement. Consistency matters. I think he learned his lesson w/ the trick plays, especially when we’re already ahead against a truly bad team. I’m not opposed to keeping Cable as HC. But it’s important if Davis let’s him go that we get somebody quick and Davis needs to understand weather it be Cable or a new HC, that not every team will turn around like Miami and Atlanta. Like I posted on another article, things don’t just have to change w/ the players and coaches and system, but things have to change franchise wide. We need everyone on the same page and willing to work together. Obviously, not everyone will agree 100% of the time, and some feelings will be hurt, we are all human, but the franchise needs to learn to work together, listen to each other, discuss with each other, and form a plan together. Look at Detroit where there was nothing but division. The Raiders franchise (and I’m using the word franchise a lot here to mean the entire organization to make my point) needs to take a cue from us, the fans. We may argue with each other over our point of views, but together we all want what’s best for the team and we stand by them.

and our ideas make a lot more sense than anything they're shoving out
I completely agree, but this team is very close to having a breakout year. All we really need is some help on run defense and a little bit of help with the passing game offensively. Which this can all be solved if we have a smart offseason. And to have the smart offseason, let’s look at how the Falcons did it (football players, not franchise stuff). In one offseason they revamped a crummy offense into a winner. It started with drafting a franchise QB. The Raiders have already done this and he’s already shown he can be successful. Then surround him with weapons. The falcons did this by drafting a sleeper pick in Douglas and by having an already talented receiver in Roddy White and Michael Jenkins. The Raiders still need some help here. We need to draft a #1 receiver, an every situation kinda guy. But we have our speed threats in Higgins and Schilens, and we have our possession player with Miller. Then the Falcons picked up a guy in free agency with all the skills of a great RB but one of the praise or fame as one. The Raiders already have the great running game, so need to worry there. Then the Falcons drafted their franchise O-Lineman, with Sam Baker. A real sleeper pick in my mind. The Raiders need that franchise tackle.
We need those sleeper picks. To get those sleeper picks, we need draft picks. Trade those who haven’t been contributing. Maybe we trade Huff, Routt, Burgess, Griffith, Curry, or Walker. Any will do, point is, we can’t throw away draft picks as we did last year. Plus we need as many as we can get.

The sad thing
is Hall knew he didn’t fit here and admitted it after he got released. He said it was for the money. This is why we need a GM. Davis just isn’t capable to handle the GM job any more.

mikesd, how have we "fucked up the draft lately"
look at the players we’ve drafted:
Russell: Had his ups and downs. Just needs a few more pieces around him to be consistently good
Miller: Our TE for the next 5 years
O’Neal: Great blocker at FB. Was a big reason for 07’s 6th. ranked run offense. Missed this year.
Richardson: Great run-stopping DE who’s also got a bit of a pass rush.
Bush: Only needs more carries to be really good
Henderson: Looks like he’ll be starting somewhere on the line next year
McFadden: explosive running back. Great all-around.
Branch: one INT in his only start and would have been good this year filling in for a suckish Huff if he didn’t get injured
Shields: was on IR all year, don’t know what to expect right now
Scott: Tied for rookie DE in sacks and tied for Oakland lead in sacks with 5.
Schiens: Speedy wideout who looks like Russell’s new favorite target not named Miller
Looks pretty good to me, how’s about you?

he would be able to see it in the post box because it’s HTML code, when you post you don’t actually change the source code of the page. Somewhere a HTML tag didn’t get closed properly in his article. Probably if he used Internet Explorer. I noticed IE has some issues w/ this site sometimes.

when post an article, you just insert onto a field box. Like filling out a form if you’re ordering online. It’s the code that you don’t see that processes it when you hit submit.

Those are our choices????
I wouldnt min schott but I think he hates the Raiders.
Mooch has never won anywhere.
Same with Fassel.
Harbaugh is interesting. He took USD a school with no football budget and made them winners. in his first year at stanford he won one more game than last year. keep an eye on him.
I am not sold on Cable either. Last game did look good. Would like to have seen the next game to see if it was a fluke. If I was the owner, give him a chance, but in my mind, he has a one year audition.

Whoever the Head Coach maybe,
we must stick to him for more than two seasons. Giving these one year auditions are not going to cut it in the NFL anymore. I chose Tom Cable because he has been the coach already. He already has an understanding about what works with this team and what doesn’t.
I hope, after the Kiffin incident, Al Davis learned to give his Head Coach more control over the personnel. Most of Al Davis’ guys (Hall, Walker, Kelly) flunked this year. We all learned this year that the best way to acquire talent is through the draft.
