RAIDERS Armageddon!! Addendum: No Laughing Matter
While the overhaul of the Raiders may have already begun with the release of DeAngelo Hall, the Al Davis statement that he will hire a GM type person and the reports that the Raiders are already lining up head coaching candidates.
Well , then we have this interview with Nnamdi after the game last night where he reacts after the loss to the Chargers with some brutal honesty. It really shows in a nut shell where the Raiders are at as a team:
Asomugha: We're not even close
After seeing that, the kind of overhaul that it is going to take to fix the Raiders is going to have to be of nuclear proportions. I mean, it's not just about the quality of the players and the coaches, it is really going to take a massive cultural change to get this thing straightened out. That cultural change starts at the top with Al Davis. Let's avoid all the personal attacking of Al and just look at the problem and the solutions. While Al is a part of the problem he is also going to have to be part of the solution, because he is not going anywhere.
I believe that the real problem with Al is not that the game has passed him by, as many like to say, but that the contemporary player in sports has passed him by. Players now, not all, but the majority are really playing for the big contract and guaranteed money now and the passion of the game is secondary. In the 70's, which I really believed were and will always be the glory days of the NFL, it passion first and the money (none of which was guaranteed) 2nd.
Al believes that players just want to put on that Raider uniform, bleed Silver & Black and give their life to the Raiders. For many, many of the 70's Raiders that was the case. Not now, as today's players care more for their pay checks and their bling.
I believe now, based upon the way Al said some things at the Kiffin press conference, that he is coming to terms with the modern player in today's NFL. That being said, I beleive that Al will finally do what is necessary for the organization and bring what is most needed, structure and discipline, by overhauling the front office and bringing in a GM type ( not a puppet) change the culture. The Raider fans are the most loyal in the world but we will not tolerate a repeat of this next season. The dollar value of the franchise as is Al's legacy are on the line now and this just cannot continue. There is no other choice and Al knows it.
This is why the new year for me is not January 1st but December 28th, right after the final gun in Tampa, the Raiders demolition and organizational rebuild begins.
Now this from Jerry McDonald's blog:
While Nnamdi Asomugha was giving his grim “State of the Raiders” address Thursday night, there was laughter from across the locker room coming from the general area of the defensive line.
(Some of it is audible on NFL.com in the interview with Asomugha).
He was asked if there was enough frustration in the locker room considering the Raiders were coming off a 34-7 loss in prime time.“I don’t know. You’re hearing a lot of laughing. You’re hearing a lot of the same thing after every game. I can’t go to each person. I know there are certain guys that are frustrated after every game, like (Derrick) Burgess, Gibril (Wilson), who came from a different team . . . Tommy Kelly.
“There’s guys that are frustrated every game, and you know that. I can’t pinpoint every single guy and get in their face and say, ‘You guys aren’t frustrated enough, and we got to do better.’ ”
Asomugha’s observation met with Tom Cable’s seal of approval Friday.
“I think anytime you get beat, I don’t know if there is anything to laugh about,” Cable said. “I don’t think there’s anything that makes you feel good when you get beat. If it hurts when you lose then you feel right about the game. if it’s OK and you can accept it, then you know, it’s tough for a lot of guys in that locker room to hear that or witness that. And I thought he was very fair with his comments.”
Cable was asked if the culture of losing which has gone on for six seasons has overtaken the locker room to the point where losing doesn’t hurt as much because it happens so often.
“Man, I hope not. I hope that’s not true,” Cable said. “I don’t know. That’s a hard one for me to answer because that ain’t my world. If that’s the case then there’s real issues. I hope not, but it did happen. You just hope that hurts. Losing hurts. It’s supposed to.”
This is exactly what I've been saying. Many of these players we have simply don't give a shit! They are here just to collect a paycheck then move on to their next opportunity.
The team must purge itself of these players, no matter how talented they are, change the culture from the top down or else as Nnamdi says, nothing has changed nothing will change.

this sounds right
man i agree 100% we are looking at a complete overall top to bottom-the real question will be if Al can really keep his mits off and allow a GM to do what he needs with this franchise-gut it like a fish. Any theories on who this GM would be? Will be quite a job but for someone up for a real challange maybe a great chance-to restore the Raiders to the greatness and prominence they once had……………..this loosing has to end soon it’s getting really bad-I used to be very passionate about this team-i come home and it’s 24 zip………….damn

Raiders Armageddon
I truely hope you are right! Because I ‘m sick of my daughter asking me “did they lose again daddy?” every monday or this morning in the latest case!
The question is can Davis stomach watching somebody else doing to the team what he did all those years ago? The team has watched all the other teams catch up and overtake them. The man with the power needs to swallow his pride in order to restore pride to his team and more importantly he has to believe 100% that its the right thing or it will fail again.
As a Raiders fan it pains me to say that somebody needs to study the setups in New England, Miami or the Meadowlands as positive examples of what could be. The time has come for individuals to step away from their ego’s and prove their worth.
A final thought for Mr Cable “Planing and preparation prevent piss poor performance!”

another problem is
Al wants immediate success. He needs to do what the Chiefs did and get a team built up that will last years. not a team full of players who’s best days have past them by who may have once been elite. We need to get lots of draft picks and actually draft smart. And if you’re going to try and do stuff in free agency, don’t pick up Kwame Harris when Flozell Adams is available.

The team looks worse than it is
because the offense has not scored in 3 or 4 years. Therein lies the problem, we did not have a QB for 5 years, and now we have the youngest QB in the NFL. It would be amazing how good this team would look if they ever scored any offensive TD’s. IT is clear that our offensive tackles are awful, and getting two good offensive tackles is not easy. It is not clear if our receivers are any good because we rarely throw the ball more than 10 yds. downfield. It is clear that Fargas is just average, no more, no less. There were at least 3 plays where Fargas tripped over himself. A good back would have run off 20 yds. or more. It is also clear that McFadden is still hurt and won’t be better before next year so right him off right now. I have no idea if Bush is any good, for sure he is relegated to the bench right now.
I also know Cable is not an offensive coach, or at least head coach. The play calling is a mystery. He played last night’s game like he was afraid to lose, like the game meant something. The Raiders have perhaps the strongest arm in the game, and at least 3 speed burners at end, yet not once did they air it out. My God, the Chargers were playing 9 men in the box and daring the Raiders to throw it long. Most disappointing season of all.

Wow it amazes me
That a big majority of so-called Raider fans in this sight have given up on the team. First of all I have to say that everyone who thinks that Al Davis is going to let someone else screw up the team you are fucking wrong. Al Davis bleeds Silver and Black he is the only true Raiders fan out here all the rest of you are a bunch of fucking band wagoners and fucking Homers.Mr. Davis can do what ever he wants with the team because he build your so-called favorite team, and if you guys dont like to loose than I suggest you jump on the Jets,Dolphins,Falcons,49ers,Patriots,Titans or any other so-called winning team bandwagon. Because guess what, the Raiders will never follow another franchise’s culture. We are the RAIDERS win or loose, and thats why the rest of the teams fans hate the RAIDERS because the real Raiders fans don’t give a fuck if other fans laugh at us. So please, stop attacking Al Davis because you guys will be sorry when someone that dont give a shit about the team takes over when Mr.Davis passes away. Then we will see who the true raiders fans are, all you motha fukas are going to cry when the next owner throws money away on stupid GM’s and Experience coaches with big egos, and not on the players that are responsible for what happens on the field.

Are you high?
The Al Davis conversations have been quiet for a while, so I guess we’ll start them back up.
How the hell does a coach do his job if he has little or no say on his staff or players? Al Davis was awesome in his time. Did A LOT of great things for the Raiders and the league. But things have changed in the league and he has not. It’s time for him to step down or at least step back hire a GM that will not be a puppet, let the coach coach, let the coach pick his staff, and let the coach do his job.
Then we will see who the true raiders fans are, all you motha fukas are going to cry when the next owner throws money away on stupid GM’s and Experience coaches with big egos, and not on the players that are responsible for what happens on the field.
No. Al Davis throws the money to players that suck. And the only reason they signed was for the money. Hall even admitted it. But you’re right hiring an experienced coach is a mistake. Wouldn’t want to hit the ground running or anything.
So please, stop attacking Al Davis because you guys will be sorry when someone that dont give a shit about the team takes over when Mr.Davis passes away.
The team is pretty much going to his kids. I doubt they’ll “not give a shit” since they’re pretty hands on now as it is.
and if you guys dont like to loose than I suggest you jump on the Jets,Dolphins,Falcons,49ers,Patriots,Titans or any other so-called winning team bandwagon.
Wow. The fact that you can call anyone on this blog at a band wagon jumper is just freaking amazing. We’re all disgruntled and upset w/ what’s going on. But to say we’re abandoning the team? Wow. Go read all the messages left on here. Wow. I just can’t get over you would say that. Wow.

Al Davis is the Raiders
which is part of the problem. I love everything that Al has done for the Raiders in the past but it is time for him to take a back seat and get himself some help. The way he is handling this team is like a mother afraid to let her son grow up and be a man. Sometimes you can love something soo much that you don’t realize that you are hurting it. Most of us fans appreciate what Al has done for the Raiders. To call them band wagoners and homers is jumping the gun. I haven’t heard too many people here say they are going to be Bronco fans because of this season. We are all upset at the state of the franchise and to find the root of these problems it does start at the top. Too many coaches coming in and out of the organization is a good way to waste talented players. See how far McFadden goes if we continue at this trend.

I Agree With Aso Fully
I hope we can put all these seasons behind us. I know the Lions are 0-12 or something, but at least their offense makes TD’s. We are so lame that our offense can’t even score.

Should me Davis’ #1 move. It should have been done by now. And we’re in danger of losing him cuz he’s had enough. Sign him quick. Restructure Russell, Kelly, and some of the other big $$ players. If we’re to be stuck w/ Russell, get it in his head to study study study study every week. We need to move fast this off season. Get WR’s. Get Linemen both sides of the ball. Move fast and smart. Get players that will fit in the scheme we have. Then when training camp starts we can focus on the work. Then when the first regular season game starts next year we dominate like the Raiders should!

It's the ghost of Irwindale!
Being the outsider can last for only so long. Al Davis was the rebel and renegade for the 70’s and 80’s, making enemies of the NFL (commish Rozelle) and other owners. That worked for a while but sooner or later you have to collaborate.
First step has to be to relinquish control from Al Davis and find a new head for the organization.

Rebuilding
I agree that we need a GM (not a puppet) and a good coach. Most importantly we need to keep players like Aso!! Hell ya I’m a pissed off Raider fan. We’ve been down along time. I do think we will be better next year. People are all ready calling JR a bust??? Troy Aikman was 0-11 his first year. We knew this year would be hard for JR add on changing a head coach and several different play callers. We need alot of things true, but we’ve had injuries and alot of turmoil. Just because were mad doesn’t mean were not true fans. We’re mad because we’re true fans. Hopefully next year with a revamped O line, a healthy DMac, some depth at D-line, a better JR and a few more tweeks we can be 8-8 or maybe even 10-6. I watched a show on the NFL network on the worst teams of all time. All ten are now playoff contenders. It’s a cycle. We will return to greatness! Raiders for LIFE!

New coach & vet QB
Cower or Green would command immediate change. If available McNabb would be a good veteran for Russell to learn from, of course major overhaul of the “cable guy’s” front line must come first.
All season I wanted to see McFadden & Bush in the backfield together, but no it Fargas left , into the poorer side, Fargas right, into his own man. Bush has waited patiently & been abused by the “cable guy” for “body language. Frustration from a player who wants to help. Knowing his talents I agree fullback isn’t the spot. If this "glorious” line would block you would’nt need another fullback.
Really sorry Al appointed “cable guy”, as bad as this line was at the time, but if he’s willing to go forward & introduce a GM, with SUCCESSFUL experience, go Al.
Long gone are the days of the “PRIDE & POISE BOYS” now it’s time to return to a “COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE” starting at the top.

No McNabb would not
be a good veteran QB to learn from. What has he done? He played IN the Superbowl, but he didn’t get them there. He chokes, and he’s just not that good of a QB. The last thing we need is McNabb in Oakland to compound an already bad situation. I’d like to see someone like Garcia or someone along those lines. But most definitely not McNabb. Don’t give Davis any more whacky ideas.

In what universe?
He didn’t play in the playoffs that got them to the SB and then instead of letting the QB that did get them there, he decided to play and got too tired to win. If he’s so good, that tie should haver happened a few weeks back. No. He. Is. Not.
