Oakland Raiders News: Dominic Rhodes Cut

Two days after drafting running back Darren McFadden, the Oakland Raiders have informed running back Dominic Rhodes that he's being released.

Star-divide

The move, first reported by ESPN's John Clayton, was a necessity for the Raiders, as the team was in danger of going over the NFL's salary cap. Rhodes had a $1.75 million salary for 2008, which is now off the Raiders' books.

Thus ends an ugly year for Rhodes as a Raider. He served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, and finished his time in Oakland with 302 yards on 75 carries. He'll likely catch on with some other team for a salary around the league minimum, but the days of anyone offering him a $1.75 million salary are long gone.

I was expecting this cut

But why didn’t the Raiders package Rhodes with Washington for a draft pick?

When I thought about how much JaMarcus needed a receiver to grow with and how DeSean Jackson fell deep into the second round, I feel like we really missed an opportunity to steal a first round talent like DeSean.

True

Past my elation for DMC, I had a sinking feeling watching all the picks teams like the Chiefs had.

Fabian was going to be traded and Rhodes let go. Is someone in the Raider brass not seeing the opportunity we could have had with this?

Well

Two years ago, Rhodes was an instrumental part of a Super Bowl winning team and Washington could be seen as a work-in-progress, just as we saw a w-i-p in Javon Walker.

The Raiders could’ve fooled some team who was mystified by our teams early-season rushing average.

Hell, if the Bungles were stupid enough to not accept two high draft picks for Chad Johnson, anything can happen.

There is only one front office in the NFL

that can be mystified into trading for a player…..

look for Jordan

to be the next to go. I wish he would have been the one to go. In my opinion, Rhodes was better, and costs less than Jordan. Oh well, with him gone there’s more money to throw all around! Mainly for the Darren contract.

Well

One of them had to go. But Rhodes is better than Jordan in my opinion.

I expect

to see Jordan gone to. Fargas/McFadden will by primary rushers I think.

Yes, Saint, now I’m excited about McFadden. Because now it all makes sense.

Hell

Should of let Jordan gone kept on to Rhodes. He finished the season fantastically and had a monster preseason missing those 4 games and Fargas coming out really put him down in depth. He was cheaper the lamont, less injury prone, did I mention cheaper, o and he was more talented. We will wait to see what happens with Lamont I expected him to be released fairly quickly with us still close on cap.

In Order To Save Cap Space:

There is some reason why we have to wait until June 1st on LaMont.

Physical and Cap

Players also have to be able to pass a physical before being cut, a la Shaun Alexander. Teams are usually given a certain number of cuts prior to June 1 that are designated as June 1 cuts for cap purposes, but Lamont would have to pass a physical first. Mini camps start in a week or so; I would say that Kiffin, Knapp, and Rathman want to see what they’re really working with before making another move.

I wonder if LaMont is Out There:

Lifting buckets of sand over his head in order to keep his back tweaked.

I know a guy who was cut from the Niners with an “injury” and he still gets paid to this day. He never even took a game day snap.

Can't hang on to either...

....and keep Bush.

I expect Bush to get his tryout this year. And if he electrifies, look for a Fargas trade come next draft day.

Fargas

will stay. He is a great worker and very good character. And look at his contract. he is somewhat cheap

I agree with Rayder K

Fargas has got great quality at a cheap price. He’s practically a McFadden clone except we know that Fargas can excel while McFadden hasn’t taken an official handoff yet.

Just Wondering

What will we get by trading Jordon?
I don’t want him, but its not like we are getting anything good

We might get something better

if we package Jordan and Stu/Bing together in a trade for maybe a fifth or sixth.
