In Search Of A Veteran Back-Up QB, The Raiders Contact Trent Dilfer
Raiders | Team contacts Dilfer
Wed, 30 Apr 2008 10:38:56 -0700David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the Oakland Raiders have contacted free-agent QB Trent Dilfer (49ers) about possibly becoming the team's backup quarterback.
The largest hole that the raiders have on their current roster is the need for a veteran back-up quarterback that, unlike someone like Culpepper, knows that he will NOT be the starter.
I have always been a Trent Dilfer fan, I knew his family pretty well, and I think that he wold be a great locker room presence and he will also be able to run the offense should something happen to J-Rock.
I'd be for this...How about you?

He would be perfect
this guy could make an excellent backup. He’s mobile enough and has enough arm strength to be a toned down Russell, which is exactly what we need.

Yes, it would be a good pickup
He knows his role, to sit on the bench and help by talking to Russell, let’s hope it works out.

It's pretty good.
But i would also like to call Rih Gannon back on to somewhere on the team to help J-Mac

Dilfer
Isn’t he about thirty five years old? Could be a good mentor, but…if he does have to play, how mobile is he?

Not sold
realistically a #2 could see the field as a starter at some point and I would not have confidence in our team as a contender with Dilfer at this point in his career. I don’t even like him as an influence on the sideline. We have a QB coach as well as Kiff who should have Jamarcus’ ear, not a motormouth like Dilfer. I say let those guys coach Jamarcus and bring along one of the younger guys as a viable #2 in trianing camp (Jeff Otis, the kid from portland state, whatever FAs, time for Walter to go)

I disagree
Walter is pretty good. I like him. He has potential to be great also. But unlucky for him, Jamarcus was drafted. He has to deal with a bad o-line pretty much his whole career so give Walter a break. Dilfer is a great mentor also. Signing him 4 one year would be cheap and smart. Jeff Otis hasn’t proved anything yet. How can u asume that he will take Walter’s spot. Man, I disagree with everything you said.

Agree
I like Walter, but it’s hard to showcase his talents when he’s flat on his back every other play.

Sign his ass up
We need someone who has played before. Walter has had a rough environment to grow up in, line-wise, so he’s always been shook. TD has been around (in several bad team situations) and will feel comfortable back there should they call his number to start now and then. Especially with the running game we stand to exhibit, all we need is someone with a cool head to spread the ball around and marshal the offense.

Yuck.
I’d honestly rather eat my big toe than have Trent Dilfer walking around here. Looks like I’m gonna have to get my place setting ready. The Raiders never do anything I want them to do.

At least we aren't getting Alex Smith

Interesting
Though he’s not flashy, Dilfer is a solid back-up. He doesn’t have incredible athleticism, but I think he’s smart and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He might be a good guy to have around to mentor JaMarcus… and as an insurance policy.

More of a backup
than a tutor in my eyes. But you know, that’s just me. Look forward to seeing if we sign him.

Dont mind signing him as a 3rd stringer mentor but
I hope he never enters the field in sliver and black.
Give me Walter as the backup

I am all for
the Raiders signing Trent, because it would fill the gap at a 2nd string or 3rd string QB that we need as an insurance policy. It would just be good buisness.

Look for him
to be signed to a 1-year deal similar to Culpepper last year. Trent can win us games should Russell go down. But let’s not dwell too much on this. After all, we haven’t signed him. yet…

I Agree
Good Call. Culpepper is a great mentor for Jamarcis. He also knows our system so i’s a definite plus.

Don't forget
Culpepper is out there too. Two good options out there. Dilfer and Culpepper, both can run the offense and mentor Russell.
