Raider Opposition: Denver Broncos

EDITORS NOTE * I had to move this to the front page, I LOVE RaiderPete's Breakdown of the Donkey's current situation AND K-Sir's series.

Well, I'm making another series, this time it's on the Raider's opponents this year. We start with one of our hated rivals, the Denver Broncos. These are in no particular order. I'll give our offense's strategy and the defense's according on the other team's player skill, strategy, and our team's strengths and strategies.

Offensive Strategy: Denver has a decent offense, luckily we can expose its fatal flaws. It appears that Denver hasn't made very many strides in the way of improving run D. (boy Zappa's gonna be all over this) Gold and Lynch are still forces to take into consideration. If we keep running on them, we should manage. When it comes to passing, we have some difficulties. Bailey and Bly are a good CB tandem on paper, but they're both steadily declining. We should be able to beat out Bly, but Bailey's still a bit iffy. Lynch is also good at coverage. If Russell can get off passes to Carter to cause mismatches (as he should be the #3 receiver) we can beat them out.

Defensive Strategy: Now we hit a big roadblock. Cutler is a fairly decent QB. He's mobile, and has a pretty strong arm. But the only receivers he's got to hit are Brandon Marshall (who should be a #2 receiver, though he does have some speed) and Eddie Royal (a receiver who was a bit of reach and should be a backup) But there is the problem of the run game. If they do the same strategy I've drawn out, it could be a tight game. Both of the games could be decided by who has the most rushing yards by the end. If we can manage some pressure on Cutler, we can seal the deal. Our run game is better than the Broncos. We have more playmakers while the Broncos have one solid back. Oops, that's right. They don't. Unless they end up with Jordan, we can win. Even if they do, we'll still beat them.

Game 1: Raiders: 38 Broncos: 25.  Game 2: Raiders: 28 Broncos: 34 (home field adv. for Broncos)

Next up: Atlanta because one of my friends likes the Falcons and he wants me to do their's quick.

*this is an unbiased report based on my honest opinion. I'm explaining how I honestly think we'll fare in these matchups.*

And with that comes the Zappa onslaught. This is going to be good. (being honest)

Bailey is still the best corner in football

and it’s not close. Sadly (for Baily, happily for us) Shanahan insists on running a zone D, which takes away a lot of what makes Bailey so special. Also, Marshall is a legit number 1 receiver.

I expect us to sweep the Broncos. They’re D is aging quickly and outside of their starting corner backs they don’t have anyone that you need to scheme for (although if Dummerville continues to progress he might become that guy). Their CB’s are great, but they’re used poorly and can’t cover everyone, the Raider recievers aren’t great but we have enough of them to go 3 wide with Miller at TE and take advantage of their below average safeties and lack of depth.

Their offense is similar in that they don’t have anyone that worries you. Selvin Young needs to prove he can carry the load, Mike Bell has proven he’s nothing more than an average back up, and Michael Pittman was average at best, can’t stay healthy and hasn’t done anything in a while. Cutler is erratic, he got all the athletic ability in the world but doesn’t have the head to put it all together.

Like I said before Marshall is a legit number 1, he’s going to be a star in this league. So in Nnamdi though. Marshall’s size will always be in his favor, but the Raiders are a team that can take the other teams number 1 out of the equation (and their number 2 now with DeAngelo). This makes teams like San Diego build to beat us, but is what makes us built to beat a team like Denver.

I agree that we’ll take both games, but not with the scores. We won’t score more than 30 points in a game all year. This is going to be a tough, grind it out team on offense that try’s to eat up clock to keep our D off the field.

Wait?!

Jay Cutler doesn’t have the head to put it all together. And I am supposed to assume that all the Raiders players are scholars!

Wrong on so many levels that I don't know where to begin!

First, Denver’s atrocious run defense was largely the result of an abominal defensive philosophy which will be corrected this year. Second, injuries decimated our front four and placed an excessive amount of run stop responsibility on the LBs and DBs. Doom will be back (I’m thinking ProBowl) and DeWayne Robertson should be good and several talented young players are now healthy with another year of experience under their belt (last years draft was very D-line heavy). Again, and most importantly, the defensive scheme should look more Coyer-esque (high risk/high reward) than last years bend and break strategy, which should pay tremendous dividends in run defense.

At LB, Ian Gold is no longer a Bronco. And all three LBs are different than last years starters. DJ has moved to WIL (his natural position), Koutavides has been brought in at Mike (a young talent from Seattle with a coaches mind and a Romo like mean streak…no, not Tony you idiots), and Boss Bailey (Champ’s bro) has been brought in at SAM. The LB core is significantly improved. They are much faster and stronger and should be a devastating force in both run stop and pass coverage rolls. Either way, most of last years LB core is still around to provide depth.

At DB, Denver still has the best secondary in the NFL (no not arguably). There effectiveness was largely diminished due do the need to play the run last year (again scheme issues); however, this year they will again be free to do what they do best (intercept footballs and demoralize wide receivers). John Lynch is not particularly good in pass coverage (too slow) and will be used primarily in run support.

The offense will also be improved. Denver has brought in a host of very talented wide receivers to compete for the spot opposite B.Marsh (Keary Colbert, Darrell Jackson, Samie Parker, Edie Royal). Stokely is still one of the better slot receivers in the NFL and there are very few LBs or safeties that can match up well with him. The WR depth is phenomenal and among the best in the league. Guys won’t make this team that could start on many others. Cutler is entering his third NFL season, when most QBs in Shanahan system really gel, and will be healthy (which is a scary prospect for anyone on the opposing side of the football). The RB stable is deep and many young backs showed signs of brilliance last year. Selvin Young will be the starter and has stated than he intends to run for 2000 yards this season (hey…anything is possible this time of year). Our tight ends are also among the best in the league (Graham, Scheffler).

Special teams is still a major point of concern for the Broncos. The special teams were poor last year and look to have gotten worse (lost Elam in free agency, lost Saurbruan to his own stupidity). This is an area that Denver will have to work around.

Finally, perhaps most importantly, some of the forces most destructive to the teams overall chemistry and focus (Javon Walker, Travis Henry) have been removed from the equation. There are injury concerns at several positions on this team; however, the depth is much improved and pure odds suggest that there is no way Denver will experience the same amount of injury as last season. In conclusion, I would be VERY concerned if I was a Raider fan, or any other fan scheduled to go head to head with a Denver Broncos team that is out to prove that the last two years were an abberation.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you!!!

Donkey analysis (ABERRATION)

Those two years were not an aberration, the Donkey’s just flat out sucked! Yes, I know we did to, but that doesn’t change the fact both our teams are going in different directions – enjot the cellar.

Really though, your team has so many weaknesses across the board, that the only way they can improve is if you are 100% correct in your analysis. Your head coach is a major problem because he thinks he is better and smarter then everybody else, when really his time has passed. You guys might improve when you are rid of him.

GO RAIDERS!!!

by TheRaiderWay on Jun 12, 2008 7:20 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Raiders last 5 seasons:
2007: 4-12
2006: 2-14
2005: 4-12
2004: 5-11
2003: 4-12

Broncos last season 7-9…and it was the only the second losing season in Shanahan’s tenure with the Broncos (same number as Super Bowl wins). Not exactly an indication of a coach who is “a major problem” and whose “time has passed”.

That would make it an aberration.

So many weaknesses? Besides the ones I admitted to in my post…name one? The best you can argue is that some positions are not yet proven.

by UnarmingMermaid on Jun 12, 2008 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

O.K. I will name several.

And we’re talking about playoff caliber right? RB,QB, TE, DL, LB, safety and the best for last:

“The WR depth is phenomenal and among the best in the league.”

Let me get a hit off what your smoking if you really believe that.

by TheRaiderWay on Jun 12, 2008 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure we're talking about the same team!

1. 2007 yards per carry at RB v. top 3 in NFL:

Adrien Petersen=5.6
Brian Westbrook=4.8
LT=4.7

Selvin Young= 5.2
Andre Hall=4.9
Michael Pittman=4.2

Let’s not forget that Denver, historically speaking, can plug just about anyone into their system and have a 1000 yard season.

2. 2007 QB ratings v. top 3 QBs in NFL:
Brady= 117.2 (wow)
Romo= 97.4
Brees= 89.4

Cutler=88.1 (in his first full season while playing with Diabetes and dropping 40 lbs.)

C’mon…you know this guy is good.

3. At WR, to quote RaiderPete, “Like I said before Marshall is a legit number 1, he’s going to be a star in this league.”. I don’t think I’ll get too much arguement on Stokley being one of the best slot receivers in the league. Therefore, we need just one of list of experienced receivers to pan out as a serviceable number two, and there is plenty of reason to believe this is a good possibility. See:

http://www.milehighreport.com/2008/6/11/550281/denver-s-wr-depth-scary-go

4. At TE, Daniel Graham is one of the best blocking TEs in the league and is adequate in the passing game. Tony Scheffler, although injury prone, is an excellent receiving TE and has established an excellent rapport with Cutler. If you take the games Scheffler has stayed healthy, the last four of ‘06 and the final 12 of ‘07, Scheffler had 60 catches in that 16-game span for nine touchdowns and a 12.6-yard average per catch. Last season, Tony Gonzalez, the top receiving TE, had 5 TDs and an 11.8 yard average. (stats from Denver Post article by Mike Klis).

5. At LB, DJ Williams is a beast (yes you will have to game plan for him) and he is back at his natural position (WILL). He is a legitimate Pro Bowl contender as well. K2 (Niko Koutavides) is a LB that we acquired this off season from Seattle. Holmgren himself has stated the K2 would be a great starting MIKE on virtually any NFL team; unfortunately, he’s been stuck behing a perennial probowler in Lofa Tatupu. He is a special teams standout, has an excellent football IQ, and should excel in Denver’s reversion back to aggressive defense. Boss Bailey, while an injury concern, is a terrific coverage LB (great for all those AFC West TEs) and an adequate run stopper. He will surely be motivated playing with his brother and one of his best friends from the Detroit days. Again…the best you could argue is that they’re unproven.

6. At Safety, John Lynch is still one of the hardest hitters and smartest players in the NFL and great on obvious running plays (functioning as a sort of 4th LB). Marlon McMcree was brought in from San Diego and is also a serviceable and experienced Safety. Hamzah Abdullah is a very talented young safety who should have a bright future ahead of him.

7. At DL, Doom is an up and coming star in the league (by RaiderPete’s own admission). He is another Pro Bowl quality player. Some of the young guys from last years draft class should start to mature and have a greater impact (Marcus Thomas, Jarvis Moss). DeWayne Robertson will have a positive impact on our run defense. This is still probably one of our greater weaknesses; however, more experience and a more aggressive defense should really compensate for some of the weaknesses here.

Again,

Don’t say I didn’t warn you!!!

If you want to quote me

quote all of me.

"I expect us to sweep the Broncos."

You’ve got a great wide reciever and two great corner backs. 3 players a football team does not make.

Your run defense wasn’t an aberation. You’re undersized and the only talented lineman you have is Dummerville who is all pass rush and no run stuff. The scheme problem you mentioned isn’t affecting the front 7, it’s affecting the CB’s. Explain to me why you’re running zone coverage schemes when you have one of the best man to man CB’s ever.

Shanahan has a great history, but he’s going the way of Al Davis. You need to get yourself a GM ASAP and see if Shanahan can handle just calling the plays. I mean seriously, the entire Cleveland Browns defensive line? Thats more of a joke than anything Al has done.

John Lynch is so five years ago. He lays out a good hit sure, but he’s the worst starting safety in coverage, and thats with Roy Williams in the league. If he can get to the ball he might blow someone up. If. Might. Maybe. Candies and nuts…..

Wow, Selvin Young was good for 6 non-consecutive games!! How did he not win at least offensive player of the year? Have fun banking on two undrafted free agents and an over the hill bust. The Broncos days of flipping backs in and out went out the window when the players on the o-line left. Was it the scheme? Or was it Schlereth, Zim, Lepsis, Nalen and Neil? Tatum Bell and Mike Bell have shown that the once great Denver line is no more.

And you know, it was way more impressive when you were realing off 1,500 yard back. What team doesn’t have a 1000 yard back any more? Shaun Alexander rushed for 700 yards last year and he was ATROCIOUS! A 1000 yard back gains, on average, 62.5 yards a game. Thats mediocre. 1000 yards in todays NFL means you were an incredably average back, not someone to tout your amazing running skills.

“Keary Colbert, Darrell Jackson, Samie Parker, Edie Royal” You call that a host of very talented recievers. Thats about the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. An undersized rookie reciever, remind me how much a rookie reciever usually contributes? Colbert had one good preseason game. One. Preseason. Parker has never caught more than 40 balls or 3 touchdowns and was run out of Kansas City where they would actually, no jokes, kill for a WR. DJack? DJack won’t practice, will be nicked up all year, drops the ball, has mental lapses and couldn’t cut it on the extra terrible 49ners. He played well in the Seahawks WR friendly offense where he developed some chemistry with Hasselbeck. He was not missed even a little when he left.

Brandon Stokely, outside of the one year where he played with Edgerrin James, Peyton Manning, and behind Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, has only caught more than 40 balls once, 2005, and has only caught more than 3 TD’s once, last year when he caught 5. He can’t stay healthy and he’s 32.

Nikeo Koutovides is going to really help your special teams. Too bad you’re expecting him to be you’re starting middle linebacker. Bill Walsh said that Rick Mirer was going to be the next Joe Montana, coaches aren’t always right and will always say nice things about other players. If he’d have been a great MLB on any team why couldn’t he find any playing team on the Hawks?

Boss Bailey couldn’t cut it on the Lions who have had one of the worst defenses in the league the past few years.

In conclusion, enjoy your washed up players. We’ll see you on Monday Night.

Game 1: Broncos 21, Faders 17
Game 2: Broncos 145, Faders 0 (opps that was my Madden simulation, real score: Broncos 31, Faders 24)

The Raiders are on the way up! Great talent brought in in the off season. New attitude in camp with DMac. They will not be quiting in the third quarter this year, except when they are up by 21 and can coast to a win!

you want about Al, but he IS the Raiders and just like the team, you either love him or you hate him. I have seen many Raiders fans pissed at Al and I get that way sometimes. If you take the time to learn where he came from and how he accomplished everything he has done, you can’t help but admire him. Insane? that is all relative man! No

I don’t think the donkeys would make the super bowl if John Elway came out of retirement. And obviously that is my point, they have no chance in hell of winning a super bowl. By the way, comparing the donkeys’ running backs averages to the best running backs in the league is irrelevant. Reason being, they didn’t even receive half the number of carries as those backs. Which is why they earned being recognized as the best backs in the league, and the donkeys are recognized as the team who has a back that rushes for 1,000 yards and then gets traded. Go get some more of Cleveland’s rejected defensive line and pray Brandon Marshall doesn’t trip on any more McDonald’s bags.

by thepunisher00187 on Jun 12, 2008 10:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wow things are really stirring up

Elway couldn’t win a Super Bowl anyway, he’s been away from football for too long and by the time the Broncos got the talent required, he’d be busy get his false teeth cleaned. Everybody knows that a QB doesn’t make a team, he needs talent around him to be successful, and right now, you’re WR are jokes. Marshall has some talent (notice I said some) and Royal is would be a backup for most teams in the league.

Well, I got front page, woopie! (sarcasm) That’s what I thought before I read the little editor’s note. I put in so much hard work to find that the only reason I was recognized for said hard work, was because of Raiderpete’s breakdown. It was very good, and I’m not mad at him, but if you people don’t care for all the crap I do, then I’m done. I’m putting an end to this section of Raider’s Opposition. If anybody else thinks they can do better, then by all means go right ahead and continue it. If you people don’t care, then I don’t either. I will however repost my SUCCESSFUL Raider’s Breakdown series just as I said I would after preseason to evaluate the starting lineup, unless you people don’t care about that either. I’m guessing Saint’s the editor around here, so thanks a lot buddy. I MIGHT still post comments, but I don’t know. To people who actually cared for the hard work I put into everything I do on this blog, I apologize. To everyone else, I’d like to see you do any better. Night Raider’s faithful. I have an eight hour drive from Oregon and trying to make about five or six games. Your coverage is also getting me pumped for the season because I know the schedule is easier this year and you are showing that.

It takes a lot of people to have an active blog. I read everything that gets put on here. I comment on a few and I have never wrote a one. We need writers to keep people coming back. I guess you've already heard this but

Gold’s no longer “a force to be reckoned with.” His skills declined precipitously last year and contributed to our horrendous run defense. He was released months ago. Neither is Lynch necessarily “good at coverage,” although he does better than you’d expect for a slow safety by reacting instantly and getting a jump on the ball. But his forte is run support and it’s possible the Broncos will take him out on obvious passing downs.

Calling Cutler “a fairly decent QB” is a fairly huge understatement. According to pro-football-reference.com, whose ratings are adjusted by the strength of the pass defenses the QB faced, Cutler was the fourth best QB in the league last year. You can see the article here. For a QB in only his second year, his first full year as a starter, playing exhausted with undiagnosed diabetes behind a patched-up o-line, that’s fairly decent alright. And now he’s heading into his third year with a deeper corps of receivers and a suddenly deep o-line with two key players back from injury. When Nalen (our center) went down our bread and butter inside game went away. He’s back and several young and so far impressive o-linemen are a year older. You’ve also underestimated Marshall, as RaiderPete has already pointed out. He didn’t catch 102 balls by accident. Have fun trying to bring him down.

You’re right about needing to get pressure on Cutler. Even though you’re much better at cornerback you can’t cover effectively without a good rush and without controlling the run. The latter, with our CBs having to cheat up to stop the run and opponents able to pass when they wanted to, made us much worse against the pass last year than the yardage total indicates. If you can’t stop us from running, and with Nalen and Hamilton back, Kuper and Pears going into their third year, and Clady taking over at LT it won’t be easy, you’ll find yourselves in the same situation. And we don’t need Jordan to do it.

Run defense is, as everyone knows, our potential achilles heel, but we don’t have to be good to be significantly better than last year. And we should be better. Our linebacking was a mess, with two guys playing out of position and the third (Gold) in serious decline. D.J.’s back at his natural position and will be a force at Will, Koutouvides will be solid at Mike, and Boss Bailey, who’s potentially the weak link, is nonetheless a clear upgrade over Webster, who continually overran plays. Ekuban, a runstopping DE on the strong side, is back from injury, our rookies – Moss, Crowder, Thomas – are a year more experienced, Dumervil is heading into his third year, and we picked up DeWayne Robertson, who was essentially playing out of position as a nose tackle for the Jets but who’ll be playing mostly one-gap for us. So I don’t see how we can be anything but better, even though we have questions at safety.

Where we really have the advantage, it seems to me, is at QB. Cutler’s proven he can do the job, even under adverse circumstances, and chances are good he’ll be significantly better this year. The jury’s still out on Russell. By the end of this year you’ll have an idea of how good he’s going to be, but right now there’s no way of knowing for sure. And even if he does develop into a star, he’s not going to be that good at the beginning of his second year after having gotten a late start as a rookie. But QB is always a crapshoot – remember Ryan Leaf? – and you won’t begin to know what you’ve got until he’s got a few starts under his belt. For an idea of what’s involved you might want to check out this piece I wrote awhile back.

In sum, I think we’re still ahead of you and that you’re going to have an uphill battle to split with us, much less sweep. But I’m not going to posture and make silly, outrageous predictions and claims. The games will be played and we’ll see how they turn out. I don’t hate y’all, despite the fetsh some make of it. It’s all good, clean fun.

Ciao

Fair analysis

It’s the off season. Everything looks the way it look on paper now, we’ll see what happen when the games are played.

WELL

not everyone can evaluate a football game. Only special and really passionate people can. Some people just watch football and don’t know how much goes into making a play work and not work.

FILE - In this Sept. 4, 2009 file photo, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill aims a pass downfield against the San Diego Chargers during the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game in San Diego. Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
