Underrated Wild Cards
Coming into the 08 season, we have some big name players. Teams know these people and will get a gameplan going on how to stop/get past them. But there's some hidden gems on the roster that teams might not give as much credit as they deserve.
1. Drew Carter- Carter has really been labeled average by fans and the league, but he's going to be one of our "secret weapons". He has a lot of speed and has really shown signs of greatness in OTA. Carter catches nicely and can get a lot of separation on the players he's matched up against. I don't think that there's many nickel corners out there who will matchup very well with him. The only one that I can think of is Routt, and he only has to go up against him in practice. I'm very excited about the Carter signing.
2. Justin Fargas- Everyone's probably saying, "what?" But it's true. I can even tell it by how much we don't speak of him. It's always Bush and McFadden. True it may be because they're exciting and new, but it's because they bring diffrent things to the table. Teams are going to be planning for the McFadden-Bush switch-er-roo. This will lead them to neglect Fargas. Many teams and fans think of him as more of a second-stringer, but he has starter talent. Fargas isn't as fast as Mcfadden, but he's seasoned and we know what to expect of him. Justin can break some tackles and make some moves. Justin's still my favorite back, and I still think the most formidable.
3. Justin Griffith- Griffith is a great fullback, but how often do teams plan for fullbacks unless it's Neal or the retired Strong. However, Griffith is a very good receiving fullback, and very underrated. Justin is an above average blocker (who's talents will be needed a lot) He does well catching passes underneath and out of the backfield similar to Miller and Bush/McFadden will this season. With opposing defenses dealing with our "stretch-the-field receivers", Griffith can make a lot of big plays on short passes. Look for Griffith to be a key part of this year's offense.
4. Michael Huff- Huff's always been underrated because he was out of position. But like he was pegged as bad by the league because of Stu, leading all to believe that all of our safeties were bad. Huff was and will be good. He's very fast and can tackle nicely. He'll see plenty of action with teams avoiding Hall and Nnamdi. I would expect him to get 6 or 7 interception.
5. Jay Richardson- Our opponents will be occupied with Burgess and Spires, they'll see Richardson as a minor threat. But he's working hard to develop a pass rush and is a proven run stopper. Kiffin says he's getting better everyday. I think Jay could develop into a great end. I expect him to end the season with 4 sacks, because Kiff will probably still use him on mostly run plays with limited action on pass downs.
6. Gerrard Warren- Everyone says he needs to be released, but Warren's my favorite DT on roster. He plays well against the run and showed his potential as a pass rusher last season finishing with 6 sacks and one safety. True he has some character problems, but I think that once the season starts, he should be fine. Teams will be preparing more for Kelly and Sands (if he's any good), leaving Warren to assert himself. Don't be surprised if Warren ends up taking Sands's job.
Waiting for preseason to roll around. 39 days left!

very true
I hope Carter develops better hands. Right now, he’s just a hidden speed threat.

Kiffin
himself said that Carter is gonna have a breakout year.

Great Takes...I Agree:
I also want to see what Kalimba Edwards does this season, IF he can stay healthy. He has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career and if he can sustain his pass rush we will have bookends that will force the plays underneath to Kelly, Sands and Warren. Not to mention Gibril.

I hope
to see Gallery be a surprise this year. It will be his first year with the same offensive staff back. He finally will have some stability.

I
like everyone, but I didn’t see enough from Jay Richardson. I feel he still needs to prove me wrong about him. I placed Kalimba ahead him right from the moment i found out kalimba was coming here.

I agree
He was ok against the run but to be a DE you need a pass rush. I was disappointed with him last year.

Talent
I agree with you on Gerard Warren. He is our most proven DT and should already be the number 2 instead of Sands. But the coaching staff loves Sands for some reason and hopefully it pays off and he proves me wrong. I don’t know about Jay Richardson. I think Kalimba Edwards should be ahead of him on the depth chart until he proves himself. And I hope you’re right with Drew Carter because I think he will be a bust. He had Steve Smith on his team, who is usually double covered, and didn’t do much to impress me. I see HIggins or Shields being the number 3 receiver over Carter early in the season.

Drew Carter
G Rec. Yds Yds/G Avg
2005 Carolina 3 5 103 34.3 20.6
2006 Carolina 14 28 357 25.5 12.8
2007 Carolina 16 38 517 32.3 13.6
2008?
I feel he is due for a breakout year. Each year his stats are improving. Let’s hope he continues this trend.

Also
I want to add, his QB’s weren’t all that great either because of injuries.

Jake Delhomme
was a super bowl quarterback and would’ve won if the Pats didn’t cheat all those years. We’ll just have to watch and see if Carter does anything. I still want to pick up Chris Henry if he doesn’t get suspended again.

I really don't want him
too many character issues and we don’t need two troubled receivers. Besides that, we already have two speedy receivers, not counting Higgins and whichever rookie makes it past camp. Henry would be too much.

Well
Walker as the number one, Henry as the number two, and Curry in the slot sounds like super bowl to me. Especially with an already good pass defense now even better.

you also have to take into account
the fact that he’d want a big contract and we’re tight on cap as is. If we were to bring him in for one year, I’d be fine. I just think that it would be too much at receiver for too much money.

are you kidding?
Chris Henry has been arrested so much that no team wants to sign him. Which means we could get him at the league minimum most likely because he won’t get anything else and will want to play anywhere just to show he still can. No team would sign him to a big contract because they know he is a high risk.

I Mean
If you can score a safety, you are damn good. Gerard Warren is the man. And I believe he was a 1st round pick a while back right. So its his time to shine.

Well actually
Shields hasn’t done anything yet because of injury, and the coaches say it’ll be hard for him to beat Schillens for the rookie receiver spot.

Nah
Shields will win the spot for sure and might possibly be the number 1 or 2 receiver in a few years. His hard work and determination show up even in work outs and it will pay off for him and the Raiders in the long run.

Terdell Sands
I would like to throw him in as a wild card as well because I think he could be a key to our D-Line. He’s 6’7 330 pounds. I hope he can return to form ala 2006 where he would command 2 blockers at times. I give him a mulligan (for now) for 2007.
by Raider76 on Jul 2, 2008 2:07 PM PDT 0 recs
I still have doubts about him

Yeah I guess that's true
But he needs to step it up because Warren’s waiting in the wings to take his job if he slips.

I Choose
Carter over Shields. I don’t think Shields is all that great. He is not at the level Limas Sweed, who is also injured. I hate to say it, but I don’t have high hopes for him.

Todd Watkins
There’s your hidden gem.
Through he mini camps and the OTA’s, this guy has been the most impressive WR. He has been catching everything thrown his way and he may be one of the WR”s who will benefit the most from James Lofton being his position coach.
The undrafted free agent from BYU possesses good height and blazing speed with long arms and leaping ability to be a serious deep thereat. He has good initial burst and a second gear and has big hands. Watkins will be the offensive surprise player of the campd I believe, baring injury, will push Shields and Schillens to the practice squad.

but I don’t think he’ll see very much action.

He will
see action if he proves himself. With Kiffin it’s all about performance, if you catch the ball and make plays, you’re going to see action. If you don’t…Just ask Mike Williams.
