Raider Struggles Since 2002

Ever since our crushing defeat in  Super Bowl XXXVII against the Bucs the Raiders have not been the same. We have been on a decline since. One of the major reason I feel is our inability to build via the draft. Going into 02' season the Raiders Jerry Rice was on his 18th season, Rich Gannon his 15th, Tim Brown in his 15th and our LT Lincoln Kennedy his 10th. We still managed to go to the Super Bowl that season on old legs. Lost in all this was our inability to draft suitable backups. I have pulled out the Raiders Draft starting at 2000 the year we drafted Porter so we can see what we have done. I didn't include this years class because they have yet to go through a full season.

  Since 2000 we have drafted 4 QB's, 9 WR's , and 9 OL.

QB's-

Marques Tuiasosopo- Has been a career backup in Oakland and his one year with   the Jet's. Never stood out in the games he got to play in.

Ronald Curry- Drafted as a QB he converted to WR to make the practice squad and he has shown flashes of greatness at times. A solid WR

Andrew Walter- Can't say he was a horrible quarterback because this kid never got a fair chance. Behind our terrible O-Line he was a punching bag for defenses. Who knows how he could've developed behind a solid O-Line.

JaMarcus Russell- He is our Franchise Quarterback. What we have in him time will tell. He has a tremendous upside but several factors play into his development. The run game and our O-line. If our run game is better than last year we can slowly bring him along.

WR's-

I will only state a few because there are too many to list.

Jerry Porter- Easily the most productive WR that we have drafted during this period. He was a strong athletic reciever who played well at times but mostly underachieved during his time with the Raiders. We'll wait to see what he does in Jacksonville.

Doug Gabriel- Had some productive years with the Raiders with 04' being his most productive. He's had two stints with the Raiders, one with the Patriots and he had signed with the Bengals on April 8, 2008. He was released by the team on May 29.

Jonathan Holland- It looks like the writing is on the wall for him. He will most likely be a practice  squad player.

Johnnie Lee Higgins- The jury is still out on this kid. He had a dissapointing rookie year. Reports said he looked good at times in camp catching everything thrown to him and then next day he couldn't catch a cold. He has to prove himself this year or don't expect to see him come next season.

OL-

Robert Gallery-  This guy came into the league with plenty of fanfare. He quickly proved to be a bust at the Tackle position. Part of his problem was he was inconsistent with his hand technique, he remains too upright in his stance, he's more of a catcher than a striker and that his arms are too short. He has found success at guard and with another solid year he can shed that bust label.

Paul McQuistan- Stepped up big time when Cornell Green went down. The Raiders then went three games without a sack. He is a good pickup seeing as he can play either position guard or tackle. For now he will back up Gallery or Carlisle but don't be surprised to see him take the RT spot from Green or Henderson.

Langston Walker- I was disappointed to see him leave. He was a good tackle who definately would've fit in with our new system. He is now with the Bills and part of an offensive line that allowed only 26 sacks, the fewest allowed by Buffalo since sacks became an official NFL statistic  in 1982.

Jake Grove- He has not yet lived up to the expectations placed upon him as the second round pick in 2004. The knock on him is that he's athletic and gritty but lacks power. Most likely will see back up duty.

Kevin Boothe-  Played in a few games for the but was cut by the start of the 07' season. He hatched on to the Giants but didn't play(at least he has a ring).

Chris Morris-  Has been mostly a practice squad player who is in the mix for the C  position.

Mario Henderson-  Kiffin himself said this of Mario "he continues to have issues surrounding his physicality and passion for the game. 'There was a lot of ability there when we picked him,' Kiffin said of Henderson. 'There were some questions about how physical he was, about his passion for the game, for the position, so we’re trying to improve that.' Kiffin added, 'Pads will be big for Mario. Mario’s got a lot of tools but he needs to become a physical player. To play on this line, we want physical guys and so that’s where Mario is going to have to really grow.

As you can see we have not had much success in our past drafts. This is one of my reasons why the Raiders have been bad these past years. I would like to get your thoughts as to why the Raiders have struggled.

(Sorry for the spaces but I couldn't get it to work properly without them)

Nice Take:

It is pretty alarming that out of all of those picks only 4 are potential Pro-Bowlers.

With

Lechler being our best pick so far. Hopefully our latest picks can achieve the same success as Lechler.

Wow

Pretty amazing, but I feel we are finally going in the right direction.

Franchise setback...

It is very clear that just one bad draft is enough to setback a team for years. You can’t really evaluate a draft until several years after, and looking at 2001, you can really see what a disaster that draft was and that the Raiders are still recovering from the setback of the 2001 draft. 2004 is a major disappointment also, considering where we were drafting from, but there is still some upside recovery from that draft from Gallery and Grove.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

Another

alarming thing is if you look at the years we haven’t drafted well when it comes to defensive linemen. It’s no wonder why our run defense is bad.

by Raider76 on Jul 20, 2008 10:07 AM PDT   0 recs

Yeah

our defensive lineman drafting has sucked. Tyler Brayton has been the best pick up but it took a first round pick to get him and he is considered a bust and just got traded. Quentin Moses I think had the most potential but we cut him before preseason..? Not to mention we just released the break out player Chris Clemons who had 8 sacks this year, tying Burgess which makes no sense. I wish we would’ve had more picks early on and got Trevor Laws or Glenn Dorsey instead of McFadden since we had an already crowded backfield with Fargas having a breakout year and Bush coming back from injury. And not to mention Rhodes played well at the end of the season. But I don’t care because McFadden is who I wanted from the start and I believe he will be our next Marcus Allen/Bo Jackson caliber running back. I wish we would’ve traded Rhodes and a draft pick for an established defensive linemen such as Haynesworth who doesn’t seem to want to be a Titan any more. But hopefully Kelly gains some weight and stuffs the run and Sands becomes who he is suppose to be. I don’t see Warren or Joseph getting a fair starting opportunity because of the high contracts Kelly and Sands got but maybe they’ll show enough potential in preseason to earn a starting spot. I say we trade Lamont Jordan and a high draft pick to someone for either another LB or DT or DE to make competition interesting but worth it. Our Secondary is LOAAAAADED and I am thrilled to watch them play this season. Routt will be a great nickelback for us. Good luck Raiders, we still need a decent back up quarterback though.

I certainly agree the drafting has been poor

but in reality the biggest problem has been the lack of a QB. In this day and age, teams change so rapidly that the draft is not the only way to build a team. Al signed Sapp and Burgess on defense, also Jordan and Moss on offense so it is not like the team is totally dependent upon the draft. I think the draft where we wasted picks on Routt and Washington, not to mention Gibson before that was devastating. Al loves fast, quick DB’s and sometimes makes mistakes in that category. I suspect that if this research was done with other teams you would find the same mistakes having been made. SD stroke gold with LT and Merriman but remember that is the same team that drafted Ryan Leaf with the first pick.

by Laoren on Jul 20, 2008 1:18 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree

but the point I was making was that if you look at their draft history you can see a failure to find a successor to Gannon (I am hoping Jamarcus is it). Looking at two of our biggest rivals the Broncos and Chargers they both got their QB’s of the future in the draft (Rivers in a swap w/the Giants for Eli). Building a team thru the draft is always much better than to spend big money on free agents.

by Raider76 on Jul 20, 2008 1:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What did

Sapp, Burgess, Jordan and Moss get you?

Sometimes Al makes mistakes with DB’s? The only one that has been good is Nnamdi and he’s not a speedy guy. Everyone else has been a bust.

SD is not the same team that drafted Leaf. I’m not incredibly familiar with the bolts front office, but I’m fairly certain there are very few people left over from ‘98.

Drafting is the only way to build a team in today’s NFL. Look at the great teams, NE, Indy, Dallas, SD, they have built almost exclusively through the draft. The players they acquired, most notably Moss and T.O., were grabbed at opportune times, when their stock was low. They drafted well and they were able to identify their important pieces and pay them and let the other ones leaves.

The problem with free agency is you pay through the nose for past performance. It’s not efficient in terms of money and more often then not the player you get is beginning to decline.

by RaiderPete on Jul 21, 2008 3:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree with you on that

Free agents are very expensive and not always productive. In the best of worlds a team would invest time and talent in finding guys in the draft, I feel the Raiders have a very bad record of draft picks, for that I think Al is to blame, Al has blind spots when it comes to players, he wants speed over anything which is good, but not if it doesn’t come with talent and football sense also. We always have track stars but not always good football players.

by Laoren on Jul 20, 2008 8:45 PM PDT   0 recs

If anything

we could’ve went after free agent O-lineman. Linemen usually don’t attract the big money contracts as quarterbacks or recievers. I would’ve loved to have a nice veteran lineman anchoring our line and tutoring the rookies. Alan Fanaca was one that came to mind.

by Raider76 on Jul 21, 2008 12:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You want to pay a 31 year old OG on the decline

40 million over 5 years? That doesn’t seem like a very sound decision.

by RaiderPete on Jul 21, 2008 3:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thats

what the Jets signed him for. We could’ve easily signed him to a two year deal. Worth much less.

by Raider76 on Jul 21, 2008 7:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fanaca

may have lost a step but that step is still as good as if not better than what we have.

by Raider76 on Jul 21, 2008 8:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Faneca

almost single handedly made the entire line and d-line for the steelers better. I say d-line becuase they practiced with the o-line at practice.

Wack To Mack With The General and The Back. (J-Mac and D-Mac)

by Rayder K on Jul 21, 2008 11:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Just because a player is better

doesn’t make it a smart move to pick him up. Faneca would be an upgrade this year, but he’s declining and would not be worth the contract after only one or two years. Yes it’s easy to cut players in the NFL, but there are still cap ramifications for doing that. It wouldn’t make sense to spend all that money on a veteran when the team isn’t ready to make a strong push in the AFC yet.

by RaiderPete on Jul 22, 2008 11:30 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fanaca

would be an upgrade for this year and next year. Those are the two most important years in Jamarcus Russell’s career. I’m not saying sign him up for five years but he would play an important part in Jamarcus’ development. Jamarcus needs a Vet like him to help him in his early stage.

by Raider76 on Jul 22, 2008 2:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Explain that

He would have passed up the Jets deal to take a shorter contract for less money? That doesn’t make any sense.

by RaiderPete on Jul 22, 2008 11:28 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If

we would’ve pursued him earlier we could’ve gotten the deal done. Al Davis could’ve locked him up. We signed an underachieving Kwame Harris to a 2 year $14 mil contract. I think we could’ve worked something out for a 7 time Pro Bowler.

by Raider76 on Jul 22, 2008 2:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That makes 0 sense

We signed a crappy player, we could sign a rgood player. And for less money too!

Faneca was most likely wrapped up by the Jets before FA began, a neat little trick all the cool teams are doing these days (one that Goodell does not like all too much, if I remember right one team already got nailed for it). Either way, he was signed on the first day of FA.

Al Davis is not a god, he’s not even going to pull a jedi mind trick on Faneca. In fact, with the state of the Raiders, you would have to overpay to get a player like Faneca to leave the Steelers to come here. It’s sad, but it’s true.

by RaiderPete on Jul 22, 2008 6:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm sorry

you can’t understand the value of having a 7 time pro bowler blocking for Jamarcus in his first 2 years at the helm. This year and next is very important in Jamarcus’ development. I think adding a guy who’s been to the pro bowl from 2001-2007 would help him a just a little bit (sarcasm). We have invested alot for him to be our quarterback, Fanaca would be an upgrade.

Also I never said Al was god. My point was we overpaid for Kwame Harris (whether its 2 or 3 years). I would rather overpay for a proven lineman than an underachiever. All we need out of him are 2 good years which he has. Jonathan Ogden retired at age 33 and Larry Allen still is undecided about retirement and he’s 36. Willie Roaf was around 36 when he retired so whats the point.

Declining? The declining Fanaca still made it to the Pro Bowl last year. So I think I would take a couple of “declining” years from Fanaca. If you can’t see his importance than I’m sorry I can’t make you understand how adding him to our roster would’ve helped. I’m done explaining ggot to go to work.

by Raider76 on Jul 23, 2008 6:10 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I understand the value of o-line play

I don’t understand how you think that because we signed Kwame we could obviously sign Faneca.

Wow he made the probowl??? Of course it had nothing to do with name recognition and it was all about actual performace. Fans are really educated about offensive guards, I’m sure they made the right call.

Look, if you want the raiders to keep going out and signing flashy free agents for way too much money who are past their prime and continue the trend of losingest team over the past 5 years than thats your perogative. Personally, I’d like to see the team invest in some scouting and start building through the draft where you get youth and talent and get it on the cheap.

Kwame Harris

signed for 3 years/$14 million by the way.

I Like Kwame

He is like a Walter. He has been through a lot and just needs a place to calm down. give him time, he will be good.

If you notice

most of our roster is made up of player’s we’ve drafted. We’re about the only team where almost every starter is from our drafts.

"Lightning has Struck, Wearing Silver and Black"- Super Bowl XVIII

by KA1Z3R on Jul 21, 2008 6:22 AM PDT   0 recs

sure RaiderPete

Starters on our team that we drafted:

JaMarcus Russell
Justin Fargas
Michael Bush (he and D-Mac will see significant play time)
Darren McFadden
Ronald Curry
Zach Miller
Robert Gallery
Paul McQuistan (he should get the starting role by the time the bye week rolls around)
Tommy Kelly
Terdell Sands
Jay Richardson
Thomas Howard
Kirk Morrison
Sam Williams/Robert Thomas (which ever one makes it)
Nnamdi Asomugha
Michael Huff
Sebastian Janikowski
Shane Lechler

So out of a necessary 22 starters, 18 are people we drafted. I know I counted Bush and D-Mac together, but I only counted one for Williams and Thomas because one will be cut. You’ll also notice that 8 out of 11 starters on defense are people we drafted. (exceptions are Burgess, Hall, and Wilson) I doubt you’ll find any other team in the NFL with so many drafted starters.

Thats what I was asking

I’m familiar with our starters, I was asking that you back up that most teams don’t have a majority of starters come from their drafts.

by RaiderPete on Jul 22, 2008 11:32 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Which is why

we have been the most losing team in the NFL over the past 5 years. And is also why we went out this year and spent hundreds of millions of dollars on free agents that will be starters. This year depends on the O-line and Russell’s performance.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

by thepunisher00187 on Jul 21, 2008 10:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The O-Line

is crucial this year. Interesting fact. We have $140 million invested in Russell, McFadden and Fargas. The O-Line needs to step it up this year.

by Raider76 on Jul 22, 2008 8:31 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Understatement of the month

“The O-Line needs to step it up this year”.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

by TheRaiderWay on Jul 22, 2008 9:24 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Larry Allen

is a free agent. He says he wants to play another year. He exceeds at both pass and run blocking. I think he would look good in Silver & Black.

by Raider76 on Jul 22, 2008 11:14 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The Patriots, Colts and San Diego

also have a majority of their starters come from their drafts. The Seahawks, Packers, Dallas and several other teams also have found most of their starters in the draft. The correlation isn’t that the draft is a poor way to build a team, it’s that the Raiders have drafted poorly.
