Chris Henry Pros and Cons

punisher and I have been going back and forth about the Chris Henry to the Raiders possibility. I personally don't want it, but there are good things about the move if were to happen. Just to make sure we're all clear, CHRIS HENRY HAS NOT SIGNED WITH THE RAIDERS AND THIS IS JUST TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE A GOOD MOVE OR NOT.

Pros:

Henry is a good speed threat very similar to Carter. He would be a great playmaker on the roster and solid backup should one of our injury prone receivers go down. He's used to playing third fiddle, so he won't be demanding significant play time. As punisher pointed out, we could sign him to the minimum salary because no teams are really interested. He'd rather make some money this year, than none at all. Apparently the charges against him are no longer an issue, so he shouldn't be suspended this year. He adds good competition to the receiving corps (even though there's plenty already) Henry would give us another good option giving us a loaded receiving corps similar to last year's Pats. We could use him as a returner, adding a much needed fire in the camp battle.

Cons:

We have enough character issues on roster as is. Walker just went through an episode, Hall has yet to reassure me that he won't be a distraction, and then there's Henry should he sign on. Having so many troubled players on roster, never ends well. There's the chance that Henry wants big money this year and may not want just the minimum. In this case, the deal can't be done because we still need to sign Asomugha and the rookies who make it through camp. As I previously mentioned, Henry is a great speed threat like Carter, but he struggles catching the ball at times. He's been inconsistent his whole career with hauling the passes in. Using him as a returner makes the Branch drafting useless.

So I guess, that the Henry pros out beat the cons, but I personally don't think we should. Sign Nnamdi long-term first. Then if you have enough leftover (of course after releasing Jordan) go right ahead. I actually think signing Thurman would be better (but I think he already signed somewhere, tell me if I'm wrong). Thurman would solidify the LB corps.

Waiting for training camp,

The money

is not the issue. He will be happy to play period. To me he is not a good role model for our younger guys. We need more locker room guys (especially on offense) on this young team. Javon and Henry together will be poison for McFadden/Jamarcus (Our Future of the Raiders) and poison for the team.

by Raider76 on Jul 7, 2008 8:43 AM PDT   0 recs

Totally against it

Love his talent, but there are just too many character issues to overcome. Not to mention, a possibility that he will not be reinstated by Goodell and/or suspended again. The Raiders just do not have the veteran presence this year to deal with A Chris Henry type player. This is not the Raiders of the 70’s and 80’s that could keep a player like this in line.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

I personally hope the Raiders don't pursue Henry

for all the reasons already stated. We have enough speed guys, and like most here hope the Raiders can talk Asomugha into staying. I remember once last year he was quoted as saying how tired he was of losing, so more than anything I think that is a problem with him staying. Unless he can be convinced the Raiders have turned the corner I do not see him re signing anytime soon. Time will tell.

by Laoren on Jul 7, 2008 10:51 AM PDT   0 recs

Well he should be happy

now that he’ll see some more passes his way. I think he’ll re-sign because everyone on the team sees that this is not the same team from 06 or even 07. We were competitive last year and we (may) have solved the 4th. quarter flop problem. McFadden gives us the potent quick scoring offense when behind (as do the receivers) and our run defense should be improved (emphasis on the should) to stop teams from running out the clock.

Every championship team

has had players with character issues or a lot of controversial situations. Walker shouldn’t be considered as having character flaws just because of this Las Vegas incident. Before that we never heard of him getting in trouble. With drafting McFadden we took the most talented player in the draft, but we also took the player with the most “character issues.” Having two brothers that are in rival gangs isn’t an Alice in Wonderland type background story. We don’t have a solid number one receiver really because Walker has obviously lost a step. Curry has been a number two or three receiver his whole career. And Carter doesn’t have the skills to be a number one or the experience to be the number two yet. Henry would make our receiving corps competition really intensified. He has made the toughest catches I have seen out of any of these receivers. Catching passes like he does in triple coverage while getting slammed kind of resembles Randy Moss. If he were to sign as a Raider then I would have Walker as the number one, Henry as the number two due to his speed and good hands, and Curry in the slot because that is where he has done his best work. Carter would be good against a fourth d-back by speeding past him and catching a deep pass. It probably won’t happen but I know JaMarcus would be one happy quarterback to have receivers around him that can excel to his standards. This would also make Shields development even better having a good receivers coach and many talented wide outs showing him the ropes. Henry should definently not be brought in as a return man. Branch should return kicks and Higgins should return punts for now. I’d rather see McFadden doing the returns but I don’t want to risk him getting injured. Not to mention Henry knows he is on his last chance just like Adam Jones so I don’t think we’ll see him getting in trouble any more.

Yeah. He never got in any trouble before that. Unless you consider being in the same limo as your slain teammate at the time he was shot to death trouble free, of course.

Last

I recall the Raiders aren’t a championship team yet. We have a ways to go. Also everything is all good when your winning. When you are losing everything intensifies. You mentioned yourself McFadden has character issues why bring in another to this young team. We are trying to build something good here in the Nation. Bringing Henry in could jeopardize everything.

by Raider76 on Jul 7, 2008 5:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No

we’re better than that.

Henry has never been more than a number 3 reciever, albeit behind two very talented recievers. He can’t stay out of trouble and can’t stay on the field because of it. Also, the NFL has made it clear that teams can be penalized as well as players if they’re negligent in what kind of people they sign.

by RaiderPete on Jul 7, 2008 4:44 PM PDT   0 recs

How do you consider that getting in trouble for Walker? Whoever attacked them might not of even known Walker was in the car. I don’t remember Walker getting arrested for anything from that incident.

And what I meant by drafting McFadden is if we’re willing to take that big of a risk in the draft with the number 4 overall pick, then why not in free agency with a player we can get for a low price and high reward. It’s obvious we wanted him from the start because we had 4 good running backs already and needed either Glenn Dorsey or Vernon Gholston much more for our struggling run defense. Chris Henry knows he must stop being stupid if he wants to get paid.

Even though he was behind Chad and T.J. he still made a lot of amazing catches and would be a number one or two wide out on many other teams. He will be a good depth receiver if nothing else because our number 4 receiver and down are not good enough or experienced enough to fill in at a starting spot.

Yes

We have taken a risk with McFadden but why increase the risk by bringing Henry in. Chris Henry needs guidance and the Raiders do not have the personel or the energy to handle him. Think Darrell Russell. Once again we have a young team and we need positive influences in the lockerroom.

by Raider76 on Jul 7, 2008 10:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

???Darrell Russell???

His name is Darren McFadden, and we also have JaMarcus Russell. Also, I never said we are a championship team. I said that every past championship team has had much adversity. It is low risk and high reward with Henry because even if he does get in trouble again we would’ve signed him to a low money amount/1 year deal which won’t take too much sweat off our nuts. And if he does pan out then Russell will pass for over 4,000 yards easily. Really I am surprised no one else has picked up Henry, especially someone like the Bears who have no good receivers except the converted Hester. Henry has been in the league long enough that he doesn’t need a “guide.” He just needs to avoid conflict. And if we don’t have the “energy” to handle one player, then we shouldn’t even take the field this year. Our only positive influence in the locker room last year was Chris Carr and now he is on the Titans. So I don’t think it even matters because to be a good NFL player you have to motivate yourself and appreciate the ridiculous sum of money you’re making. Nnamdi is the perfect example because he was a bust his first few years. So to fix this he practiced after practice was over and became a pro bowler.

Darrell Russell

attended the University of Southern California and was taken second overall in the 1997 NFL Draft by the Raiders. Look him up. We took a chance on him and his life and career ended sadly. Bottom line Henry is a bad fit.

by Raider76 on Jul 8, 2008 9:35 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

we obviously have had bad drafts for like the past 10 years.

no we haven't

seeing as we’ve acquired Asomugha, Fargas, Miller, the now good Gallery, and what should be our new run stopper Richardson. There’s also Morrison and Howard, Huff, and Kelly. I think we draft very well.

I Agree With You Kaiz

but I also agree with punisher. Don’t forget Janikowski,Fabian Washington, Phillip Buchanon, Derrick Gibson and Stinchcomb. These picks were very poor.

Not to mention

Tyler Brayton, Napoleon Harris, Doug Jolley, Teyo Johnson, Stuart Schweigert, and Ricky Dudley(lol). I agree with you kaizer that our drafting recently has been good as in the past few years. But other than that we usually have to trade or go through free agency to get talent.

What's wrong with Jano?

Rayder K? He’s currently the best kicker in the history of the franchise. I don’t see how that was a bad move. I forgot to mention Lechler in my list.

He is good

But grabbing him so early was a bad decision. But he is still a great kicker. Prolly the strongest.

Yeah

in Madden 09 his kick power is 100. He could probably make a 65 yarder if it came down to it. His only flaw is he misses too many clutch kicks but I know he has the accuracy. It must just be lack of concentration sometimes.

But

I still think he would’ve been there in the third or fourth round.

true

after all he is a kicker.

Well

we drafted Ray Guy in the first round in the 1973 draft. He invented the coffin corner punt. He is considered to be the 8th best draft steal in NFL history by the NFL. Maybe Al thought Janikowski would be the same way with his big leg. He already is a good pick up for us by having the most points scored in Raider history but if he were to kick a 64+ yard field goal then he also would be considered a steal in the draft.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

by thepunisher00187 on Jul 10, 2008 7:39 PM PDT   0 recs

Jano

has the power for a 64+, but not the confidence. When a kicker lacks confidence, he lacks accuracy. They had him on Sports Science, on average he kicks 56 yarders per kick. They had him do several kicks and each time it averaged 56-57 yards. That’s impressive that he kicks those kinds of kicks everyday.
