Camp Progress-UPDATED WITH 49ER PRACTICE NEWS

Hey Silver and Black boys. I know it's been a while since my last post (or should I say my last full post) but I'm back in business. I've noticed you guys are caught up with camp, but I have a few thoughts to share on training camp thus far.

- 49ers practice: I can't believe we got the 49ers to have a joint practice with us. Last time I checked we had bad relations with them, but I'm glad to hear we'll be practicing against a team other than our own. Playing, or should I say practicing, with the niners is supposed to be uncompetitive. There's a laugh. In all reality, both Oakland and San Fran-sissy-co are going to be "practicing" with intensity out there. They're teams with a beef against each other which will lead to some hard contact, trash talk, and some mild swinging of the fists. Everyone will be treating this like it's a game.

But to the positives of the "practice". It'll give us (and the niners) some insight on the preseason game. I'd be more excited about this if it was a better team. I have no doubt that our defense will dismantle their offense. Whether Smith or Hill plays our starting D doesn't matter. They lack receiver talent (even with Isacc Bruce) which will give Asomugha some more camp interceptions. This will however give our run D a test against frank Gore. We also get to see how our offense fairs against one of the more highly rated defenses in the league. I guarantee Kiffin will be keeping an imaginary score in his head for which team is doing better.

-Ricky Brown: Ricky Brown has been opening eyes around camp. No one expected special teams man Ricky brown to be outperforming Williams, Thomas, and Hartwell. He's beating them not only in the pass game, but in the run game. He's been playing outside runs well and has even clogged some inside runs. What's even more astonishing, he's doing it with the first team defense. Could Brown be the missing third member of the Law Firm. To me the Law Firm is a speedy group of coverage savvy LB.  Williams wasn't the third member because of injury and Thomas wasn't because of lack luster performance. Brown is looking more and more like the third man. We'll get to see how Brown performs in a real game against the niners on the 6th.

-Dual position defender: Probably the third most astonishing piece of camp news is that Burgess is playing both end and outside LB. I know he's very capable of being a DE/LB hybrid, but he's always been a DE and is elite at it. Rob Ryan may be trying to work in trickery just like the offense is. The defense can do this in certain situations this year. With pass rushers Edwards and Spires (though he's having a weak camp) playing end, you can throw Burgess in at LB to add an effective blitz to a play. With three pass rushers coming at the QB, expect rushed throws to our pass heavy defense. Burgess has also been working in coverage. I'm not crossing my fingers, but if he does well enough in coverage, Burgess could throw offenses off. They may use an extra blocker if he lines up at LB. Meaning there's one less receiver and an extra defender to play the pass.

Since I'm talking about Burgess, I may as well talk about his progress as an end. Burgess is still having one of the best camps of anybody on this roster. He's been consistently getting through the blockers (even though one of them is Harris) and is doing well against the run. If Burgess stays healthy, he'll be a top-10 end this year.

-Offensive line: Don't worry this section will get to Grove, but not now. For now, I have to talk about the poor play of our tackles in camp. Harris is a consistent blocker. As in he consistently gets pushed away. If Isaiah Ekejiuba can push him two yards back, we're in trouble. He's been getting better in the pass, but Edwards and Burgess are still gliding past him. What's worse is that his backup Henderson is getting demolished. Kiffin is very disappointed in him. He lacks passion and conviction, has poor form, and needs to work on his footing. Maybe we shouldn't be asking McQuistan to take Green's job, but take Harris's job.

Now for the good news about our O-line. Grove is finally proving why the Raiders drafted him. He actually should beat out Wade. But, how long will his excellent play last? Grove is injury prone, and i don't expect him to go a whole year. Wade will be kept on roster for when the day he goes down. Morris will also stay on roster because he's the leading long-snapper and can play both guard and center. The inside of the O-Line will be just fine, but we'll be torn apart by outside rushes.

-Wide Receiver upsets: You know the receivers are working hard when Jonathan Holland is outperforming Schilens and Shields. You know they're working hard when Todd Watkins has been credited for being able to "catch everything thrown his way". You know they're working hard when Carter is outperforming Walker. You know they're working hard when Higgins is being kept around for more than punt returns. Point is, Russell is surrounded by weapons. Kiffin will have a hard time cutting any of the receivers mentioned. Shields's injury hasn't hampered him any in camp. There was word that he might not make roster because of Schilens's performance. But it seems both Shields and Schilens will be around. The receiving corps for Oakland is easily the most interesting position battle. I can't even really tell you to expect to make the roster other than the obvious Walker, Curry, Carter, and Higgins.

-Terdell Sands: Sands is the team favorite. Everyone cheered him when he passed his physical. People are giving him encouragement every time he does something good. Sands has been working hard to bring down his weight and bring up his muscle tone. He's been doing a good job getting some push on the O-Line. Sands has addressed the media on his work ethic and of his problems last season. I'm sorry about the short section about him, but I just feel he deserves mention.

-William Joesph: I've always thought the Joesph move seemed a bit fishy. After all he never saw much action with the Giants, and he was labeled a first-round bust. But hey, that's what they said about Robert Gallery. In Day 9 of camp (as I'm sure you've heard from raider76's consistent posts on training camp) Joesph showed some potential. He got behind the line to break up a run play. Kiffin was very excited about his performance on Day 9.

So, what can we expect of Joesph this season? Well, don't expect much. Joesph is a backup, nothing more. If one of the DT's needs a break, he could come in as part of the rotation. If you rotate Sands with him, you won't lose much of a beat. William can play the run just because he has some strength. Don't expect sacks from him, he's just not a pass rusher. We'll just have to watch preseason to see what he can really do.

-Nnamdi Asomugha: I have to mention Asomugha's amazing camp. It's Day 10 and I think he's had at least 1 INT per day. That's very impressive. Most of them would have went back for TD. So, maybe Hall isn't the only def. TD threat. Nnamdi's guaranteed to see more pass attempts his way this year. If his cap prowess holds up, he'll be getting a lot of INT on those few extra attempts.

-What to grasp from the niners joint-practice: Well the niners-raiders practice is over. Like I said there would be, there were a few scuffles. I counted three. Overall, we have some work to do. Hall was being beaten often by 49er receivers. He got beaten for two touchdowns. We can't have that happen come regular season. Otherwise, we'll have a new Fabian Washington. If he doesn't step it up, Nnamdi won't see any passes thrown to him.

Gerard Warren got a pick off a tipped Thomas Howard ball. Sam Williams showed some success against the run even though Robert Thomas is back to working with the first team. Huff seemed a little slow but is, nevertheless, having a good camp. Wilson didn't get much mention. Trevor Scott had a good practice. There were several times where he would have gotten sacks. Unfortunately, they were against a reserve tackle.

I'd like to speak of some offensive woes. The O-line continues to struggle. The line had trouble reading the blitzes of the 3-4 defense. Russell was under constant pressure and threw some bad passes because of it. I'd be willing to say that we could have another 06 line on hand this year.

There was some good offensive news. Javon played better getting open frequently. The problem was that Russell was under so much pressure, he never got many passes to him. McFadden tore away from Patrick Willis (defensive rookie of the year) on a very impressive run.

So what should we take from this joint practice session? The o-line needs a lot of work especially against aggressive 3-4's. Hall needs to work on his technique. Russell quickly needs to learn how to play under pressure.

Just some interesting news from camp. Expect some occasional updates and stuff.

Good To Have You Back

I wish Walker becomes good soon. I saw some videos on him just to see if he can keep up with the league’s top receivers and well, I think he definitely can. He is a spectacular and amazing receiver, but I can’t understand what’s going on with him in camp. I will give him the whole preseason to get better and hopefully he does.

I hear

Curry may actually take the #1 spot. Don’t be surprised if either Curry or Carter takes that spot. I doubt Carter will but Curry is a distinct possibility. You’re right Walker is a great receiver, but I don’t think he’s overly happy about coming here. He was hoping to land with a playoff team, but he joined us because offers just weren’t coming in and we offered the most money. Our other player who’s in the same situation, is doing much better. If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m speaking of DeAngelo Hall. Hall has a surprisingly great attitude and is a real team player. I find it hard to believe that his spirits could’ve been crushed in Atlanta or anywhere. He’s very happy about coming here and everyone’s happy he’s here. Both he and Wilson will be better acquisitions than Walker. In the end, Walker will most likely amount to little unless he starts stepping it up right now.

Appreciate the update....

From what I recall reading, Kiffin made it sound like we set up the practace ( Raiders punked dem),making sure The Raiders take care of what we need to deal wit, then we will work with the 9’er on somethings. Oakland Raiders Run the game.
The line will be someting to watch since I haven’t seen the two men Harris and Henderson play yet, so I’m not gonna speak on it. The men are with the Raiders now, I’m sure we are going to have the men grind it out. It’s a good thing, only 1 week to finaly see how they perform.
The man Curry surves up something decent for dem. # 89 is the only reason I did not vex when the Great # 81 stopped playing.
Sands is a monster, want to see the man unleashed. Checking out some pics of the Big Bad D-Line and almost did’nt recognize Kelly if it wasn’t for the big # 93. The man is a beast, 1 week to see him put in some work. The same for Burgess, the man is going to be $H!t*n on fools. No wonder why Harris and Henderson got problems them have to work with Big # 56.
The crybabies and the other teams “bring ya flashlights, it gets real dark in Oakland”.

Glad

to have you back. I am really hoping that Sands has a good year. Last year dealing with the death of his mother. If he plays like he did in 06’ and Kelly is who we think he is the Raiders are gonna be tough to beat. We have a young team that is ready to bring back that Raider magic.

2008 Oakland Raiders are the best kept Secret. Let the Media hate all they want the Silver and Black are back. The Nation knows what time it is.

Kelly is indeed what we think he is

He works extremely hard to fulfill his new role as the D-Line leader. Several say he’s the replacement for Sapp. He’s not. Sapp got behind the line and charged the QB even if it was a run play. Kelly plays much more intelligently. Kelly is bigger, stronger, and plays the run much better. Look for Kelly to be a little shaky at first (you know, adjusting to a new position) but he will start to play much better by the end of preseason.

It is a little too early to be making long term predictions.

This is the first 9 days of training camp so it is to be expected that some players will look good, others will look lost. Take Walker for example, had an operation, did not work out in any off season workouts, and knows he will start so why should he, a former all pro, hurt himself in training camp?
We all know from experience that guys who light up training camp often times do not even make the 53 man roster. As was pointed out there are a lot of guys having good camps that will not make the team, Schilens, Shields, Holland, Watkins will probably not make the team. There are only so many roster spots for receivers, a lot of guys will be left out.
I think there are 4 keys to the season, Harris at LT, the strong side backer whoever he might be, Sands in the middle, and of course Russell, the most important of all.

Clarification

Walker was never all-pro, he did go to the pro bowl once (‘04) but thats different than all-pro.

Walker may retire

Javon Walker has offered to retire and give his bonus money back to the Raiders. This story coming in only about 10 min ago.

Well I Read Up

And it looks like he is going to stay since Al Davis persuaded him to stay so it’s all good. I would definitely agree with Al on keeping him because he is a good receiver. I also agree with Laoren

I read the same thing this morning

by Kawakami in the SJ Merc. If it is in fact true that a player would give back his bonus money to retire then perhaps Walker has much greater problems than we imagined. I have read stories about him after his teammate was killed in the car, and how he hasn’t come to grips with it, apparently all the stories are true.
I feel for the guy, and hope it works out for him whether as a player or just a person, I cannot imagine how traumatic it must have been. It says a lot for Al (if all this is true) that he talked him into staying, perhaps realizing that the best place for Walker to be right now is on the field.

by Laoren on Aug 2, 2008 1:19 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I just don't feel good about Walker

He’s not showing any big-play potential like we signed him to do. He’s a little slow and sluggish and has been having some catching problems. Maybe he just has a lot of things on his mind.

I am not so concerned either way with Walker

I believe there are some interesting alternatives on the team which could easily replace Walker. I am considerably more concerned about the defensive line replacements. A lot of hope is being put into Sands and Kelly, with virtually no replacements if they don’t perform.
Everyone knows that the defensive line must stop the run for this team to be effective.

by Laoren on Aug 3, 2008 7:42 AM PDT   0 recs

What??

We have William Joseph and Gerard Warren to pick up the slack if those players do not perform. And this is just completely ridiculous to keep assuming that Walker won’t be good just because he isn’t practicing to your standards. What a player does on game day is what matters and he made the pro bowl with Packers so he definently can perform which is why we signed him for 6 six years right when free agency started. Practice means nothing, nothing at all. Javon Walker will do just fine.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

by thepunisher00187 on Aug 3, 2008 12:05 PM PDT   0 recs

William Joseph has not shown much yet in camp

and Warren has been out with a “minor” injury so from where I sit they are not decent replacements at this time. I happened to like Warren last year but he does seem to come down with a lot of minor injuries, and Joseph who was a first round pick, and was released has not proven yet that he is a bona fide replacement, I hope I am wrong on both counts. You will admit that given the amount of money we spent on Sands and Kelly that the Raiders are counting on those two.

by Laoren on Aug 3, 2008 6:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Walker made the pro bowl once, 4 years ago

And that means he’s going to be good this year? He hasn’t performed since that pro bowl year and has torn up his knee twice, he’s not the same player at all. Now he’s offering to retire, which should tell you he doesn’t care about football right now. In a league like the NFL where the system is so important, and the talent is so close, practice means a lot. Things look very bad for Javon right now, I expect very little of him this year.

by RaiderPete on Aug 4, 2008 3:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm just telling you what I have been hearing and seeing

I can’t say “Walker’s been practicing poorly but this has no effect so you just read this for nothing”

I Heard on ESPN

He didn’t want to retire at all. He was having trouble with the team. So he didn’t like how he was being treated prolly cause the coaches told him he sucks.

I haven't heard that on ESPN

but wouldn’t surprise me, for whatever reason, wide receivers are real prima donnas and there is no question that Kiffin has been calling out Walker quite a bit, apparently lining up wrong, running wrong routes, etc. As I expressed earlier veterans rarely shine a lot in camp, they are on cruise control, waiting for the games, let’s hope that is the case here.

by Laoren on Aug 3, 2008 6:30 PM PDT   0 recs

Given

his history I feel he still has alot of issues to address. This is a red flag that I can see becoming a big problem later on.

by Raider76 on Aug 3, 2008 9:01 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah Laoren

I do agree with you that we have invested a lot in Kelly and Sands. But, that is exactly why I am nervous because they are average players and have not shown anything to me to make me think otherwise. Warren and Joseph were both first round picks which just means they have high expectations and are suppose to reach a certain potential talent level. If they get a chance to start at some point, they must realize that the Raiders are paying a lot of money out right now and should try even harder to earn a big contract since they already have seen it happen to Kelly, Sands, Harris, Walker, Wilson, Hall, Russell, and McFadden. I am still excited about this year no matter what else happens because we had needs on the roster and I think we filled in those needed areas quite nicely. I look for the Raiders to have at the least, 4 players in the pro bowl this year. Asomugha for sure, Hall most likely, Morrison, Howard, and maybe Burgess or Wilson. I didn’t include Huff because I am not convinced he should even be the starter at this point. If he struggles look for Wesley to step up and step in because he can play FS and SS. Huff in my opinion is strictly a FS. But I like Huff a lot so I hope he hits his peak this year. I am counting the days for Madden 09! :)

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.
