The AFC West - Return to the Order of Things..
It's hard to remain objective when talking about a divisional foe, but I will do my best here to examine the Raiders with an impartial eye. Take this rare post on your site however you like...I just wanted to share my thoughts with the enemy. You can also thank Raiderpete for bringing me over here with his smack talking and actual agreement with a Charger fan(disgraceful!).
First off, the Chiefs are a train wreck. Though they have already taken great steps this offseason to speed up their recovery time from the depths of despair, they still have several years to go before they will even threaten to reenter the playoffs. Personally, I like the fact that we can finally go into Kansas City and come out with a W...so I'll take it for as long as I can get it.
Secondly, the Chargers. This team, though talented, is very immature and also aging. Their time at the top is slowly coming to an end. I for one can't wait to see how far Phyllis Rivers will fall once he no longer has the talent behind him hiding the fact that he is an average QB at best.
And finally, the Raiders. This team ranks first among teams I DESPISE. The list goes Raiders, 49ers, Chiefs, Jaguars, Chargers, and Seahawks. That said, it looks to me like this team may finally overcome the hampering of Crazy Al. They still have a few years to go and one never knows when Crazy Al will knock them back down to the bottom again. I think the Raiders will finish close to .500 this year for the first time in half a decade. I also have predicted a return of a long dead rivalry between the Broncos. My team came one timely timeout away from being swept last season. A thing that has only happened once(2002) during the Mike Shanahan era.
It all comes down to execution. I think the Raiders have an excellent coach in Kiffin, but I also think Crazy Al will end up firing him during or after this season. Much like he did to Shanny, hopefully, Pat Bowlen will be able to pick Kiffin up as an assistant. ;) 2008 will be one of growing pains for the Raiders. A young inexperienced QB will make plenty of mistakes and will even cost them some victories. Their running game may be their only chance this year to make .500, but how many teams will focus on that and try to make JaMarcus Russell beat them? I know the Broncos will.
I originally had the Broncos losing on opening day(tradition shows the Broncos don't play well Week 1), but after seeing my team in action during the preseason I have decided to chalk week 1 up as a victory. I've watched many years of preseasons and this is one of the best years I've seen in a long time from the Broncos.
The D is underrated and stuffing the run quite easily thanks to a return to traditional Bronco football. We are not, repeat not, on our way down like so many punDITZ think we are. I like the fact that this team is so far under the radar. The Broncos are young football team that has a franchise QB that is throwing the football better than ever. This offense is going to be explosive and dangerous. The only liability will be our LB core which is spotty at best. Without DJ Williams, it would be a train wreck.
I wish I could say, "Best of Luck", but I'd be remiss to do such a thing. I despise your team and I wish you nothing but sorrow as fans, however, a morbid part of me likes the fact that a rivalry may be returning between the Broncos and Raiders. I grew up in nor cal and my own brother is a Raider fan, so its nice to be able to talk smack and not have it be so one sided. Perhaps we can bring down the Chargers together...it just isn't right to have the Chargers dominate the AFC West. It's an affront to the natural order of things to have the Chargers on top. They are and should always be cellar dwellers. Their fans are of the fair weather type and deserve to crawl back into obscurity. Perhaps their team can move to Memphis or something...
As for September 8th for the Raiders. Just lose baby! ;)
Realistic 2008 AFC West Predictions:
San Diego Chargers: 11-5
Denver Broncos: 10-6
Oakland Raiders: 8-8
Kansas City Chiefs: 3-13
PS Any of you Raider fans who are going to be tailgating for the game, email me if you want to hang out and drink some beers. It's always cool to meet fellow SB Nation fans and my little brother is a Raider fan, so you shouldn't be too predjudice of me. We are all just people anyway...

PPS If this thread is treated too harshly and degenerates onto a personal level I will delete it.
The idea here was to be respectful and talk a little smack. Hopefully I came across that way. I am somewhat curious to know what Raider fans think are realistic expectations for the AFC West Standings at the end of the year.
KA1Z3R, are you going to be at the game? I’d like to meet you…it appears we got off on the wrong foot. I have a short term memory so I am unsure what I said to caused you to have such a poor opinion of me. I’ve always talked smack, but I don’t recall ever making it personal. The only time I could think of was when OakFoSho was raising hell. ;)
September 8th….Almost a full 10 years since my last game. 31-16 at Qualcomm Stadium in 1998 was my last game. Can’t wait to make it to Denver for a home game. I’m shooting for 2010….

Hey Zappa
it’s cool. No hard feelings. I forget too. Anyway, I won’t be at at any Raider games (and I never have been) cause i live clear in West Virginia. But I’d like to bring up that the broncos won’t have Marshall, you’re best receiver. I say the Raiders win opening night but not at Denver later in the season. I just don’t think that Stokley, Kolbert, or Royal will be a strong enough receiver corps on opening night.

It's not certain yet whether BMarsh is going to miss any games...
However, Eddie Royal has risen to #2 on the depth chart and is averaging over 20 yards per catch. He juked the starting corner(dont know his name) for Dallas right out of his jock strap. Dude is dangerous. Kolbert is nearly at the bottom of the depth chart. D Jackson is #3 right now. You forget about Tony Sheffler who is Cutler’s favorite target in the red zone and Selvin Young is deadly catching passes out of the backfield. Our first string offense has 3 TDs in 4 possesions this preseason so far. The only time they didn’t score was a missed field goal at the end of the first half last week. lol If BMarsh does miss the game, then I think it’s going to be a close hard fought battle.
In any case, the offense is not what I am worried about. It’s the Broncos LB core that worries me. If the D is going to get gashed in the running game it will be because of over pursuit and bad angles by certain members of our LB core. I can guarantee that this defense will not be gashed this year in the run game like it was last year…but it’s still not in the Top 10 or perhaps even the Top 15 in the league…yet.
I can’t wait for September 8th!

yeah preseason doesn't mean anything
if you recall in the Raiders debacle of a season in 06, we were undefeated in preseason.

The AFC West needs to become respectable again
All of our teams need to become powerhouses. I am a Broncos fan, so naturally I want the Broncos to sweep the West, but I want it to mean something special to be able to beat a division rival. Watching NFC North teams walk all over our division last year was maddening.
The balance of power is getting ready to shift back, strong draft classes in recent years throughout the West should pay off by next year.
Best of luck to the rest of the AFC West!

Unless you guys plan on sweeping the bolts
then there is no way on earth that the Broncs are winning 13 games this season.
Realistically, 13-3 probably gets team second seed in the playoffs (Pats will find a way to cheat again) and I am not expecting either of our teams to reach that plateau this season.
I mean, how do you plan on obtaining that record after the Raiders hand the Donks an opening day loss?

It's preseason.
We went 4-0 in preseason in 2006 and our record ended up 2-14. Also we barely ran the ball which as you should know is our strength. Kiffin had an agenda and stuck with it. He went for it several times on forth down when he could’ve kicked a field goal or punted. Don’t get too excited. You are seeing the vanilla playbook.

The Arizona
game Kiffin said he was going to pass the whole game and they did. Arizona knew this and blitzed practically every down. If we would’ve played a more balance game which you will see Sept. 8th the score would be much different. One thing you don’t understand about Kiffin is that he doesn’t care too much about the score in preseason. If he did he would’ve kicked field goals and not gone for it on fourth soo many times. He sets a gameplan and sticks with it just to see how the team reacts. The Arizona game showed that we are not a passing team yet, that we are a run oriented team.

I'll take your word for it. Not being a fan, I wouldn't have known
that was Kiffin’s strategy. I still think you’ll be in for a surprise on September 8th. The Broncos run D is giving up around 3 yards per carry against the first team offenses we have faced thus far.

that's a bit harsh
I say the Donks go 7-9 simply because of the whole playing in Denver thing.

btw, your team went 4-12 and is somewhat improved....I have you guys getting close to .500
And that prediction is tenuous at best because the Raiders of this decade just seem to lack something…heart. Al Davis has sucked the heart out of this team and eaten it raw to keep him sustained into advanced old age.
The Raiders truly need a rebirth to get itself out of the gutter. The same old tricks and coaching carosel will do nothing but assure your demise. Once you fans start to realize that then you might become more objective.
I like to say 13-3 for 2008 simply because our offense is far superior to the one we fielded in 2005 when we went 13-3…but I agree, nearly everything must go right for this team to get that far in 2008. We still have many holes on defense, though our run defense is much better, however without a pass rush we’ll get screwed in the passing game. No DB in history has been able to cover a WR when a QB has 10 seconds to find someone. That said, 10-6 is actuall a bit pesimistic and you will find this out on September 8th.

I think
for the Raiders the main things is consistency. We are a young team and consistency is a big process in our growth. The number 1 area that it is needed is in the coaching staff. These young players cannot afford to have a new coach every 2 years. Once that is set you will see the “rebirth” to get us out of the bottom of the AFC West.

hell, my own blood brother is a diehard Raider fan. I loved rubbing these past 5 years in his face…. lol He’ll be tailgating with me in two weeks. One of us is going to have a wonderful birthday present, the other is just going to have to be happy about a great tailgate party. lol

I just
dislike Donkey fans. Didn’t mean to get personal Mike. But don’t feel bad because I hate Steeler fans more. The reason is because the rivalry is stronger and we’ve had closer and more entertaining games with them. Our overall record against the Broncos is 54-39-2 so you guys don’t really concern me much since we got 15 more wins on you. As a matter of fact, the Raiders have a record of .500 or better against 27 of the 32 NFL teams.

Punish--thanks for the comment--trust me I take nothing as personal.
And funny enough we have something in common—I hate the Steelers more than the Raiders. Their entire run of Super Bowl wins seemed to be by some critical fluke bounce or catch that went their way.
Punish—hate our team—not us fans—just a suggestion.
