Camp Notes Day 10: PM
Here is a quick update on Saturdays night practice. KA1Z3R gave you a brief update but I thought I would put up the notes from camp anyway.
– Visual evidence suggests JaMarcus Russell will be back to normal as far as arm strength by Monday when the 49ers arrive for two practice sessions.
The passing game was again erratic, but Russell launched one with seemingly little effort that sailed a good 50 to 55 yards in the air, with Todd Watkins catching it over DeAngelo Hall.
– One sideline observer with NFL experience was unimpressed with the Raiders passing game, particularly with the amount of balls hitting the ground in seven-on-seven drills. Exceptional passing teams can go entire sessions without an incomplete pass, given that the quarterback is not rushed and has time to wait for receivers to come free.
It’s worth noting, however, that there were sessions even worse last year with Josh McCown, Walter and Daunte Culpepper and the season before with Aaron Brooks and Walter.
– Rookie Arman Shields missed practice again and was joined on the sidelines by Ronald Curry, who practiced in the morning session and practices only once on two-a-days. Jake Grove, another one-a-day performer, also sat out. Guard Robert Gallery was given the evening off and cornerback John Bowie (knee) and linebacker Grant Irons (hamstring) did not practice.
– With Grove and Gallery out, John Wade started at center and Paul McQuistan worked at left guard.
– Marques Tuiasosopo connected on a deep throw to Jonathan Holland over Rashad Baker and Darrick Brown, but later had a pass stolen by Hall in the end zone.
– Defensive end Trevor Scott was sent jogging because of an offsides call.
– Andrew Walter fumbled a center snap, causing Kiffin to call for a new quarterback.
– The Raiders evening practice was shorter than usual, with the families of many players and coaches arriving for the yearly “Family Day.” Families were invited to join players for dinner at the facility after practice, with some leaving to go to local restaurants.

I don't put much stock in practices or the outcome of them
The rookies and guys trying to make the team are going all out while the veterans know they don’t have to, so they can work on other things, and also make sure they don’t hurt themselves during training camp. The season begins next Friday and from then on out. I want to see how Russell looks then, or Walter for that matter. I want to see if Watkins can get open against another team, not what he does against our 2nd string secondary. So much talk about Bush running upright, well, I want to see how he runs against the 49ers. I want to see Harris against the end for the 49ers, how does he hold up then, that is what is important, how they play with something on the line and against someone other than their team mates. One thing I have liked about Kiffin from the beginning is that he doesn’t sugar coat things. He says if a player looks good and if he looks bad, that is refreshing, so many coaches say things are great when they are not. Shell was guilty of that all the time. At least if Kiffin says he likes Watkins or Shields we know it is not a smoke screen. If Henderson is not competing we know about it, that is good from my perspective.

Practice is overrated.
Kwame Harris will most definently be put to the test against the 49ers. He will likely be up against the newly acquired Justin Smith who is a former pro bowler. I am eager to see how we handle the deadly combo of Frank Gore and Deshaun Foster because those two both have the potential to break 1,000 yards this year. I think our secondary will have fun and get a few interceptions against the struggling Alex Smith who now must earn his starting role because Shaun Hill was very impressive at the end of last season and is looking to take over the team for good.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

Justin Smith is not a former pro bowler
and he’s not very good. I’ll be interested to see how Manny Lawson plays and to see how Harris handles him (if the line up on the same side, I’m not sure where Lawson usually is).

Justin Smith
made one pro bowl and being on a weak team like the Bengals he was always double blocked. Look for him to be a big factor in the 49ers defense this year.

Again
Justin Smith has never been to a pro-bowl. Justin Smith has been a very average player for the Bengals, and he looks to have started his decline.
