Preseason - Week One Analysis

Great game against the 49ers to start it off. Many things looked good, which led to a dominating victory. The score was 18 to 6. For those unfortunate fans, who missed the game, it was a very fun game. I was standing the whole time even though I was home.  Even in the stadium, the crowd was standing the whole game. I looked at all the team's games, and the Raider fans are the only fans who stood up the entire game. Best fans in the world.

Star-divide

Running Backs - Well the running core was IMPRESSIVE. Bush sticks out the most and his leap into The Black Hole was pure enjoyment), but Mcfadden and Fargas did exceptionally well also. Another surprise was Rankins who had an amazing 71 yard run which should' ve been a touchdown, but wasn't because of a force-collar tackle. Also, don't forget Chaz Schillenz's penalty at the one yard line.

Special Teams - GREAT. WONDERFUL. AMAZING. Higgins, I'm going to ride your bus from no on. Amazing returns. Not return, but returns. He was amazing. He is quick and very agile. Dangerous too. His flip was not bad either.

Defensive Line - They were GREAT. Tommie Kelly penetrated and plugged up many holes. Lived up to his contract. Burgess didn't really get to do much though. Trevor Laws looked pretty impressive. Beat his man many times and played with aggression. Sands and Warren did okay also by plugging up holes.

Secondary - Pretty good. Two interceptions. Not bad. However, many passes were caught and that shouldn't have been. For example, Morgan went wild on Waddell,  but Waddell did force one fumble and recovered two. However, we need him in coverage. The main two shutdown corners, (Hall and Asomugha) did an okay job, but they played off-the-receiver too much and allowed a couple passes.  Maybe Coach Kiffin doesn't want to reveal too much about our corners yet. Routt did pretty well with his interception. Gibril and Huff were amazing. Tackling hard and shutting down plays. Great play from both players. Hiram Eugene got one of the interceptions also. He also got into a little scuffle which was hilarious.

Linebackers - Kirk and Thomas Howard didn't see much action. However, I finally got to see Hartwell. Wow, he can truly be a good MLB. He is quick to the ball and tackles without missing. I have faith in him now. He plays very smart. Also, Jon Alson was good.

Offensive Line -  They were pretty good. No penalties for the starting line-up. Positive +

1 sack allowed. Negative -

Mario Henderson looked HORRIBLE. I don't think he deserves to be on the team. He was bad. I see what Coach Kiffin means by no passion for the game.

Receivers - Couldn't get open. Many dropped passes. Horrific route running. (Drew Carter) Tight End Zach Miller always had to block so no catches for him. I really didn't enjoy the play from the receivers. A lot of work to be done here.

Quarterbacks- Walter did the best. He led one whole drive down the field perfectly. Wonderful to see. J- Mac didn't look to good. He only had two completions. Not very flashy or exciting. I'm worried. I hope he gets better. Tuiasosopo was okay. He had a nice run that fooled everyone. J-Mac needs to start making broken plays, good plays. I want him to become similar to Donovon Mcnabb. Just a lot better.

yeah man.

i really think we have the best running back trio + 1 combo in the league. Bush was bustin’ through the niners D, Rankin was running outside the blockers, and McFadden showed his leg strength of refusing to go down ( which many “analyst” said was one of his weaknessess). Didn’t really see fargas that much since i tuned in late in the game, but judging from what he did last year… our backfield core is more than on point.

Nice analysis

What I hope continues from this game on is the improvement of the run defense. If the Raiders can control the run game, they could be a sick defense. The passing game looks like it’ll be the big weakness on this team but with the running game, Russell will not have to do all that much. Call me optimistic but if the run defense holds up and the offense doesn’t have many stupid penalties, I think the Raiders could have an 8-8 season.

I think that

we should play mainly Singleback formations with two TE. That way one stays back to block and Miller can go catch the ball. Just my opinion.

Somewhat Of A Good Idea

Then we can use Miller in passing situations. However, our fullback was vital in our run game. He was doing an amazing job. I forgot to mention him, but he was playing very well.
Maybe we can try some double TE packages so Miller can catch some balls.

I'm puzzled why Russell didn't play more

It is clear he is the starting QB, also clear he needs a lot of work, so why not play him? Are we going to wait for the opener to give him experience? He did not look good, and we cannot win without superior play from him. I don’t put much importance on anything that happened in the 2nd half, by then a whole lot of guys are playing that will not be on the final roster. I liked the overall speed of the team, and the aggressiveness.

Rusell should play more next game

I think he’ll play more next game, I think Kiffin wanted to give D-mac and Bush the ball to see what the guys can do and get them familiar with the rest of the team. Maybe next game we will see Rusell air the ball to the receivers and try to improve the passing game. I hope thats the case or else we can be in real trouble without a passing attack.

i wouldn't worry

too much about Russel yet. I think he looked okay. They didn’t run too many passing plays for him and he had a couple nice plays. I remember he threw a great touch pass that javon walker dropped.

the amount of injuries concerns me

Branch with a broken thumb, Carter and Curry having leg troubles, same with Hall. This is not good to see this early on. If players are getting injured for the 7 plays they’re on the field before being benched is troubling indeed. After all, how will they handle a full game?

Thinking more and more each day that we’ll finish at 6-10,

KA1ZER

You think we will be 6-10. Come on. We were pretty impressive. Special Teams was good, running backs were good and Defense was good. Just the passing game was bad.

yes but look at all of those injuries

it appears that we have a good chance of being this year’s Colts. The team where all of our superstars go down with injury. Seeing as how most of these injuries came in the first quarter, I’m worried about how they’ll last in four quarters.

Then there’s the fact that our once-easy schedule is now getting harder and harder. The Jets get Brett Favre, the Saints get Jeremy Shockey. The Jets were once a win, but now they’re very questionable. The Saints were once a maybe, and now they’re pretty much a guaranteed loss.

You must also remember we went up against the 49ers, a team who’s in the shape we are (except we have our QB figured out). Just as each day passes and more news of Harris continuing to struggle in the passing game, how miller has to hang back to block on nearly every play, how Walker continuously fails to get open or catch a pass, is really giving me doubt.

But

They weren’t serious injuries. Just little bubu’s that the coach didn’t want to get infected. He didn’t want the small injuries to get worse. Everyone is fine and I saw many great things. But next week will be a great test. I mean, Titans are a great team. Running backs look good and D-Line is amazing on that team. I hope we can stop Vince Young also.

I see

I wasn’t aware of how serious the injuries were. Apparently I worried for little. Yeah this Titans game is gonna be awesome. Let’s see how our D-Line fairs against LenDale White.

We

still won’t get our pass defense tested much with Young. I don’t think he is that good of a passing QB. I would like to see how we contain a scrambling QB like him.

by Raider76 on Aug 11, 2008 11:07 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Or our run defense much

I’ve haven’t seen a lot out of LenDale with the Titans.

I just await the

Cardinals preseason game (we play them right) that way Hall (who needs some work) can go up against a quality receiver in Anquan Boldin.

Boldin is the kind of reciever

that will abuse Hall, thats not a great match up for us. So don’t read too much into that one either. Hall will be fine, a lot of top corners around the league looked pretty shaky in their first week.

by RaiderPete on Aug 11, 2008 11:41 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It

would be nice to see our secondary get tested. We really didn’t get a chance to see that much against the Niners. The Cardinals is a pass oriented team so I don’t think our run defense will be tested too much.

by Raider76 on Aug 11, 2008 12:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

come on

6-10 we could have done that last year if certain field goals i will not mention never happened

I feel our worst attribute last year was actually one of our strengths against the niners

After my umbilical cord was cut, silver and black spewed out!!

by Beastusmaximus on Aug 10, 2008 11:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

what the d-Line

It was indeed a strength against the niners, but let’s just see if it continues into the regular season.

Special Teams

was ok. Our return game looked good but on kickoffs and punts I felt we gave up too many yards. I do agree that Trevor Scott was impressive. He put alot of pressure on the QB. Kalimba Edwards played great as well. My main concern is with the passing game. Our recievers have got to get open. Saw alot of check down passes to the RB’s and FB’s. This worries me when we get into the 3rd and 7 territory. I’m glad this was the first preseason game so we can get this fixed.

by Raider76 on Aug 9, 2008 3:16 PM PDT   0 recs

Don't Forget

Janikowski was not there. He is the reason why so many yards were given up.

well

I think shaw stood out from the back up defensive tackles. Also, rankin did have a big run, but he was stopped multiple times for no gain, somethng I wasnt happy about. Henderson continues to have problems, even with the crow relative quiet, he had a false start.

One thing I dont understand.. when we went for it on 4th down, the crowd went nuts, walter even had to do the hush movement, i think people should shut the hell up when we have a 4th down opportunity,, just my 2

by SmokeyMcRaider on Aug 9, 2008 4:24 PM PDT   0 recs

Naw

I think the louder the crowd, the best. But you do have a good point. They should be a little more quiet when our offense is up.

D Line

I was happy with our run stopping, but I wasn’t impressed with our pass rush early in the game. Too much time for the QB to find his receiveers. By the time we had our back ups in it got a little better.

I

Disagree because our starting line-up on defense only allowed 1 first down.

I agree with you except

for that money I want Russell to be WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than McNabb. We don’t need an overrated QB blaming his poor playing on his ethnics. I think he will play more next game, and Kiffin’s not happy either. But w/ the Running Trifecta, at least that’s one less problem we have to deal with on the offense.

Too much being read into the 1st exhibition game

As far as the injuries, the guys who stayed out or didn’t play would have played if it was a real game. It is football after all, and guys get hurt all the time, it is a violent game.
We have to get a lot more from Russell but in his defense he hardly played enough to get any feeling for the game. After the first series, 8 of the 11 starters on defense was taken out of the game so how can you read anything into the outcome? The next game against Tennessee will be a better barometer of this team. I would expect the 1st string to play a lot more, and Tennessee is a much better team than the 49ers. We should know a lot more about some key players after that game.

by Laoren on Aug 10, 2008 9:43 AM PDT   0 recs

On the fourth

down crowd noise. I think the crowd was just excited that they were going for it and over did it. It is kind of like everyone expects the kicker to come out and when they realize he isn’t there is a roar that grows as more people swallow there eight dollar beer. Then it’s too late and the snap count isn’t heard. I have only been to a half dozen or so games, but that is my take. I have seen it happen before and I don’t like it either.
