Lane Kiffin to be fired today
Good Morning Raider Nation, Jim from Big Blue View.com here. I know its early for you Oakland Raiders fans, but I figured I would let you know that Jay Glazer from Fox Sports.com is reporting that Al Davis thas informed Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin that he is going to be relieved of his duties today. Here is the link from SI.com:
Not sure how you guys feel about this but it seems to me this was a bad idea from the start.
Good luck
Jim

I'm torn
First, despite his flaws and mistakes, I really wish Davis would keep Kiffin. He and the team could grow together and appear to be headed in the right direction.
But if this has to happen…..part of me thinks it’d be better to wait until the bye week so the team isn’t thrown into complete disarray gameplanning for San Diego and the new coach has two weeks to take hold of the reins. On the other hand, maybe it’s better just to get it the hell done with so everyone can move on.

Funny the D fell apart in Q4
and the offensive guys gets fired and the D gets promoted?
Whatever this team has the makings of being good but constant change is never good. Plus WHO wants to come in and coach in a place like this.
Good luck Lane and Thanks for trying to do a job that wasn’t winnable.

F*CK AL DAVIS
We finally get a good head coach and he still fires them. Rob Ryan sucks nuts and Al Davis is the worst person in the world right now. As loyal as I am to my city, Al pisses me off with this. I hope this is his last year because we have a good team. And I hope Al bring Rob with him because giving up 17 points in a quarter? What the hell are you doing? Prevent? F*ck That! Do what you did the first three quarters you f*cking dumbass. Don’t they have a saying don’t break something if it works or something like that? Rob Ryan And AL are killing the Silver & Black (DeAngelo is gettting up there too). Punk ass manangement

I have to say
Amen to that… F**K Al Davis. Screw our Management and what they have done to my team. Since 2002 we’ve sucked balls and now this is the lowest of the low. Thanks Lane for putting up with all of the crap that Al-mighty Davis put in you in. If anyone should be fired it should be the Chubby Chipmunk Ryan and his conspiracy to get Lane fired…. Screw Ryan and Davis. Raiders fans should boycott the game on Sunday to vent our frustration to Davis and whoever becomes the next coach. SCREW YOU AL!!!!

Commitment to Mediocrity!
For all of Kiffin’s faults, let’s not forget that he had the integrity (not a word associated with this organization) to protect his players concerninng their development. What he saw in practice led to his game time decisions regarding how exposed he would allow them to be. I liked what he was doing with both Russell and McFadden. Sure it was frustrating to watch these guys held up from the offensive possibilities they possess, but better that than allow Russell to turn in another Alex Smith. The Peyton Manning model of QB development was impressive. To bad we happen to be fans of an organization that spins out of control every 1-2 years. How could I ever get mad at Kiffin if he comes back here with another organization and stick it to us the way Shanahan has done over the last 13 years.

How do you know
that it is Kiffin that is making those game time decisions from what “he” saw in practice? It could very well be what an assistant coach or the collective coaching staff…Or Al Davis saw in practice. Kiffin is just the one you here voicing those decisions to the media, it doesn’t mean he is making those or any other decisions.

He took the responsibility
…several times throughout the pre-season and the first two games. He stated that all he has been is in charge of the offense. We never heard that Rathman, Cable or any other coach was involved with the decision making/play calling.
Kiffin has been brutally honest with the media. Actually quite refreshing compared with Shell or any of the other 3 dunderheads since 2001.
If Rob Ryan is named the next head coach, expect a Joe Bugel type performance. Believe me, none of this makes me happy in the least bit. All I do is compare our current status with the glory years of the 70’s which I remember all too well.

Every one
seems to be harping on Kiffin’s perceived conservative play calling. That play calling gave us the lead until the Defense fell apart in the 4th. Why, why, why doesn’t anyone yet see that on here? That the D lost the game?
Kiffin was diplomatic in his press conference after the game, saying the blame rests on everyone. And it does, kinda. There is logic, even if I don’t agree with it, to not calling a time out. He’s working on Russell’s pass, and it had some good points this week. I think keeping Kiffin is important, especially during the bye, to work on Russell’s pass.
I also think that Ryan blew that game on purpose, and if Kiffin get’s fired, I really think Davis told him to blow it so he can fire Kiffin.

I have to disagree
I blame Kiffin for the loss because of a bad trend that I saw extend back even to the Kansas City game. Kiffin’s red zone play calling has to be some of the worst I have ever seen, and we squandered a lot of points both in Kansas City and Buffalo. Eric Mangini got slammed last week for calling three running plays in a row at the goal line, and I see this as the same thing. 1st and Goal from the 10 and then 2nd and Goal from the 5 should lead to a TD. 2nd & 6 from the 11 should lead to a TD. Instead both of these drives stalled and led to Janikowski field goals. The play calling got even more conservative in the 2nd half, where Russell had 3 passing attempts.
Basically, Kiffin put a huge gorilla on the defense’s back and told them to get it done, and they got tired and gave it up. The defense may have been on the field when Buffalo won the game, but it was Kiffin that lost it.
The score should have been 17-7 at the half and should have been out of reach of a Buffalo comeback. Instead, the Raiders went 1-4 in the red zone while the Bills went 3-4. I blame Kiffin.

I don't think you understand how bad our offense really is.
Teams tend to stack it up in goaline situations and when our passing game isn’t good we are bound to come up short. JaMarcus is on his 4th start and can’t make those reads yet.Kiffin can only do soo much. Blame Al for letting JaMarcus holdout and miss precious time on the field.

Blame
I still put more blame on Kiffin over Russell or the WR core. Coaches have to put their players in a position to succeed, and with Kiffin’s terrible play calling in the red zone it’s no wonder we only scored 9 points in the first half.
by LiveAdam on Sep 22, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can't
227 in the second half is unacceptable. To only rush 3 down lineman towards the end of the game and not put pressure on the quarterback is ridiculous. This is a trend with Ryan. We always have a lead in the fourth then we go into prevent d and get picked apart. It’s easy to move down the field when DeAngelo is playing 10 yards off his man.

Robert Gallery
Robert Gallery knows what I’m talking about:
``It comes down to those three field goals in the first half,‘’ left guard Robert Gallery said. ``It’s on the offense. It came back and bit us in the (butt).’’

let's not forget Gibril Wilson getting kicked out
…and yes, Ryan defense, not Kiffin’s offense gave up 17 4th Q points. Certainly a long ways from the days of “Pride and Poise”.

Bound for disaster
In the second half on offense when we had the lead….Kiffin called each drive like so: run, run, run, punt. I was happier with the run, run, screen, punt(not). Terrible play calling gets you nowhere. The Bills made so many mistakes but due to our soft play we lost. Three out of the four times we got in the red zone we had to kick field goals. That is a bad case of lacking execution.
I don’t give any credit to Rob Ryan either. He called prevent defense with 3 and 4 man rushes throughout the entire second half. We need to learn that even though you have the lead, the game is not over. You must keep dominating and scoring as many points as you can like Denver did to us. Hell, throw in some plays you were going to try next week and see how they do if you feel you have a comfortable lead. But don’t just run the ball three times and punt just because you have a small lead. We’ve got the players, just not the right coaches.
Russell has a cannon arm and they barely ever have him throw deep unless it’s 3rd and 20 which isn’t fair to him. Cut Russell some slack and have him open it up early in the first half to keep the opposing defense guessing. That will also lead to longer run plays if they’re playing deep because we now know how good McFadden is and how he can get a touchdown any time he touches the ball.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

I'm
I’m in the boat of keeping Lane Kiffin but after the day is done, it all depends on who the next coach will be. If we become more consistently dominant with the pieces we have then great choice, if not well… we’ll see how fans react then.

From Yahoo Sports
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Lane Kiffin is back at work Monday as Oakland Raiders coach despite more reports that his firing could be imminent.
Speaking at his weekly news conference, Kiffin says he will assume he is still the head coach until owner Al Davis tells him otherwise. Kiffin says he has not spoken to Davis since before the season opener against Denver on Sept. 8.
Reports about Kiffin’s firing first surfaced on the eve of the second game of the season against Kansas City. The team has refused to deny the reports, but Kiffin has remained the coach.
So it looks like we have a coach till the bye week or maybe Al actually listened to the fans (not likely).

Let's put a ban on this headline.
If it happens, it happens, but this is like Favrecenter all over again. Just drop it. But I think we should personally keep Kiffin. It was a disappointing loss, but I was really surprised/pleased that we played well against Buffalo and should have won the game. Say what you want about Kiffin, but the last two weeks, the players haven’t given up on him. Either they respect Kiffin, or else they have more self-respect than I realized. I like the direction and progress of the team. Buffalo is at least a decent football team and we took it to them in Buffalo until the debacle. At least we aren’t the Chiefs or Rams.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

Kiffin's own words.
"There’s no way I’m quitting, and that’s got nothing to do with money, at all," Kiffin said. "That has to do with our players. I talked a lot of these players into coming here at some point – obviously, money has a lot to do with that – in free agency over the last two years. A lot of our coaches, I recruited them and their families to come here and build this thing together. So the last thing I’m ever gonna do is quit, the way that you guys are talking about quitting or even quit behind closed doors, as far as my energy or my passion towards getting this thing turned around.
"Because I believe we can turn this thing around. And there’s a lot of good things going the right direction, and I think we’re gonna turn it around."
So can we please stop saying he quit on this team when it’s obvious he wants to win.

Thank you
for that quote. I’ve been saying he hasn’t wanna quit yet. He really does want to be there and I think he really can turn it around. I do wish we had a veteran QB to lead us right now and bring Russell up to speed quickly (hint for offseason backup transaction).

Kiffin is commited to winning.
I was getting tired of people saying he threw in the towel. This is another thing from the article.
– Linebacker Thomas Howard told reporters in the locker room Kiffin came to the back of the plane to talk over the game with Nnamdi Asomugha and Kirk Morrison.
– Kiffin said he expected everyone to be hurting with the end result.
"If you’re feeling good about yourself in this organization after that, then you’re not our type of guy,’’ Kiffin said. "Every person should be feeling they could have done something better. I know that’s the way I feel.’’
But he also found the silver lining in the black cloud in stepping up against a difficult opponent on the road.
"I compare that to last year, basically two similar situations where we went on the road, long trips, and that was Green Bay and Jacksonville, two playoff teams that we had to go on the road and play them in a tough environment, and we got handled pretty well," Kiffin said. "As opposed to yesterday, where we outplayed them, we’re up by two scores with six minutes left. Once again, no one is pleased with the outcome or the way we finished. There are no moral victories, but I do like the direction that we’re going."
It’s a damn shame he can’t have this team for the long term because I really am starting to like this guy more each day.

Even Better
What I’m worried about right now is I’m looking back at that game thinking about what I could do different, and that’s why I’m not sleeping at night. I’m not sleeping at night worried about whether I’m going to be the head coach, I’m thinking about how we could have won that game by something that I did…
I love the attitude, much better than the “I don’t run the defense” shtick. I don’t want him fired, I just want him to do his best, and I don’t think he’s there yet.
Just watched the Chargers murder the Jets, next week is going to be tough. Gear up for it Kiffin and Raiders!

Kiffin / Ryan Def Off
I would agree that Kiffin shoud have been a bit more agressive in the red zone. Russell can through and is smart.. but like someone said here Ryan throughs in the towel in every game we are winning. He sucks, he always puts in the prevent d WHY never let of play hard for 4 Q not three and he has done the same thing sense he has been here. If you where the head caoch and had no control over what your d coach did what would you do. Protect your young players
WSe need Al to DIE before we will se winning seasons again BECUASE he will always fire the head coach.
