Broncos Hire Josh McDaniels

On Saturday night, the Denver Broncos announced that they have hired Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their head football coach.

Star-divide

It's interesting to see the Broncos go with an offensive head coach after they fired Mike Shanahan. Josh McDaniels had been previously with the New England Patriots since 2001. He is a pretty young guy and the Broncos decided he was the right man for the job. We'll see if anyone else makes some announcements in the coming days, particularly our Oakland Raiders.

No GM in Denver

They have two “assistant GM’s” that are there from the Shanahan administration, but no real GM that is part of the on field football operations. The same goes for Cleveland too, as they hired Mangini without replacing GM Phil Savage first. This is just to say that the Raiders are not alone and it is not so odd that the Raiders will hire their coaching staff before they hire the GM.

Ok I realize

My question is: Is Al hiring another GM or is he remaining as the GM?

In the press conference

in September when he fired Kiffin, he referred to hiring a “local” guy that would help out in various areas of the football operations. Al never used the word GM. Around here, we all have been referring to this person as a “GM type” person, as we all know that Al won’t hire a traditional or classic GM in the Raider organization.

What I believe will happen is that Al will hire a “GM type” that will probably be in the Bruce Allen mold that is primarily going to concentrate on the salary cap and on player contracts, in addition to the other NFL issues such as going into the uncapped year in 2010 as well as new stadium issues for Oakland.
