Tom Cable for head coach?

Tom Cable finished the season 4-8 as the interim head coach this year. Kiffin was 1-3 when he was fired so it's unlikely, but possible that Cable could have went 8-8 if he was the head coach at the beginning of the season. Things were looking grim for Cable's future in week 15 when we were 3-11. But, in a most impressive fashion the Raiders dominated the Texans (we finally beat those guys!) and knocked Jon Gruden and his most hated Buccaneers out of contention for any type of playoff hopes. In my eyes, this is the best season we've had in the past 6 years. Russell has another season of experience under his belt and now with a couple of offensive tackles, his future is looking very bright when throwing the ball to Higgins and Schilens. Truthfully though, we went 3-0 with Mario Henderson starting at LT over Kwame Harris. I think I can see our problem! Henderson should definently start at LT next year and we should draft the best available OT with the 7th overall pick to start at RT. This will greatly improve our offense in the biggest way. Our games that we got the most rushing yards in was also with Henderson starting, hopefully the clues are adding up here.

So to get back to topic here.....is Cable now qualified to be our official head coach? Or, should the Raiders try some other options. I heard it's between James Lofton and Tom Cable right now for the job. But, it's not unlikely that the Raiders might try and get someone outside of the organization to lead the team. No matter who it is, I hope the Raiders build off of these last two big wins and have a season good enough to win the AFC West. If we would've went 9-7 this year, we would've took the division. With some good offseason moves, we could be right there in the playoffs.

Head Coach

I am not so sure if I want Cable to stay on as head football coach or have someone else come in. Al Davis is looking at Jim Harbaugh, Kevin Gilbride, and Paul Hackett right now. I think Cable is still in the running, though. Gilbride seems the most enticing to me. Davis likes Gilbride’s power running game in New York and how Eli Manning developed.

I don't think

I’d be dissappointed nor thrilled if Cable left or stayed.

The pros for him staying are that he has a system set up, and consistency, and the players like him. He could be okay.

The -’s would be his stupid play calling, which I think he learned his lesson.

No trick calls though, Tom. None. No. Sebass cannot run. At. All. No. No. No. (okay, I think I got my point there).

As for assistants. Well, from what I understand, most of them, sans Lofton, have their contracts ending so…hiring a new coach may not be to detrimental after all.

Yep, what he said

There are pro’s and con’s to both sides. And maybe we shouldn’t hinge our hopes on Cable’s last two games alone, but man, just for consistency’s sake, maybe he’s worth a longer look.

That, and I really can’t stomach another press conference where a new coach is introduced, and all that jibberish about restoring Raider pride resurfaces. Because I’m a sucker for that, and I get my hopes up, and then…well, you all know the rest.

I'm here to talk about the past.

I don't

know how his offense play design is, and while some of his calls were questionable, keeping him somewhere would be good for stability.

I wasn't

implying that I want Cable as our coach just because we won our last 2 games. But he is definently worth considering to keep consistency in Oakland. I would rather see Kevin Gilbride in there as our head coach next season. James Lofton would be good too though. As for our offensive and defensive coordinators, anyone except Greg Knapp and Rob Ryan would be an improvement.

I don't see

any experience that will make Lofton a good candidate for HC. Especially since, as our WR coach, he’s bad. We never said you were implying. You asked the question

.is Cable now qualified to be our official head coach? Or, should the Raiders try some other options.

So with that question will come our answers.

Also, punisher,
I heard it’s between James Lofton and Tom Cable right now for the job.

That may simply be the in-house guys. And Lofton may just be a Rooney Rule interview. I’m not saying your wrong or that you’re implying anything, I’m just stating that I think Lofton would be a bad choice. We need HC’s w/ experience now to get the team on track. Lofton never had HC duty in the NFL. A quick google only shows he’s the only coach left after Jan 13th under contract. No talk of HC.

Chester McGlockton

was interviewed on NFL network and said that if the head coach were to be chosen within the organization that the only two candidates would be Cable and Lofton. He is a former Raider and maybe had contact with Al Davis about the situation to say something like that. Either way I don’t think the next Raider head coach should be Lofton or Cable. I would like to see Kevin Gilbride or Steve Spagnuolo as the HC.

In the defense of Tom Cable, the players seem to like him. The big bonus of keeping Cable would be to keep a consistent flow heading into the 2010 season.

In Lofton’s case, he is a hall of fame wide receiver. He understands the game just as well as any head coach and can read defenses better than a coach who’s never played the game I would think. Lofton should be the OC next year to see how good he really is as a coach. You can’t say he coached poorly when Javon Walker decided he didn’t want to play and Ronald Curry dropped more passes than he caught. Not to mention Russell didn’t have time to throw with that porous offensive line.

It was his

job to make sure the WR’s did the best they could. To work on the dropping of the ball, getting open, etc.

But i don’t want to turn this into an argument about Lofton. I agree that Lofton could be a viable OC. I know Lofton interviewed last year for the job. Good catch on that NFL Network interview. I missed it.

I don't want Gilbride

he’d have us redo our entire O-Line. He uses the power blocking style that Shell used, and I don’t want that again, especially since we don’t have the personnel for the system. I’m rooting for Cable or Hackett. I’d love to see Hackett get it because of his USC experience as head coach. I want Cable for consistency and because the players really like him. He was also pretty good at the end of the season.

Apparently

Other unknown teams are looking @ Cable for their HC job. Better choose soon, Davis.

WOW!

I admit that was a stupid call. But you CANNOT hang his tenure here on the KC and Atlanta game. The players seem to like him, and for consistency sake, he’s not a bad idea to keep. Any loss of of consistency is a big loss. But, the fact that Davis hasn’t tried to extend his contract does seem like he’s not going to stay. He will go somewhere with better organization and he’ll be a good HC.
