Issue #1 - We NEED a G.M.
Look, all of this talk about who should be our next Head Coach, who we should draft in the 2009 draft, should Henderson start over Harries, etc....these are all secondary issues to:
"Who should be our next G.M.?"
The Raiders front office and scouting directors have had a really horrid track record in both Free Agent signings and Draftees recently. With few exceptions (McFadden, Asomugha, Russell, Schilens, Bush, Higgins) our failures in personel have been at the focal point of our demise these past 6 years. I will concede the point that the draft is a crapshoot, meaning, you are more likely to "miss" on a player than "hit" on one.
The main issue we have had is in OVERPAYING for old/past-their-prime Free Agents. Our most recent overpays have been well documented (Walker, Hall, Harris) and it is the front office that needs to take the blame here.
This is why we need a G.M. We need a guy to come in that UNDERSTANDS how to structure a TEAM under the salary cap. Look, with all due respect to Mr. Davis, his weakness for wanting to bleed the last remaining ounces of talent from older players is legendary. His eye for this is not what it used to be. Who in this league would have given Walker that contract? NOBODY. Mr. Davis should still have some input, but we NEED, desperately NEED a G.M.
So, who is on my list?
1. Parcells - Love him or Hate him, Parcells is a roster creating wizard. His track record in New York (2), New England, Dallas (despite Jerry's medaling), and now Miami, you can't deny this man's eye for "old" and "new" talent. He has had a good relationship with Mr. Davis over the years, maybe that friendship will help Mr. Davis make that change and hire someone who that he knows.
2. Pioli - Yes, I despise the Patriots too, but similar to Parcells, you cannot deny the absolute mastery that the Patriots front office has displayed with free agent signings and their draft choices (at least from R1-3). Have they missed at all on FA signings in the last 6 years? I couldn't think of any. Pioli and his minions could turn this ship around right quick.
3. Schottenheimer - Marty is a veteran of the AFL and NFL, this guy had our number for years as the head coach of KC and SD, so he knows the AFC West very, very well. This guy is well respected around the league and has always gotten players to play for him, he's a natural leader. His eye for talent and life as a head coach will pay dividends to whomever becomes the next Raiders coach. Can Mr. Davis put his ego aside to pull the strings on this one?
Dark Horse Raider Nation Pick
4. Madden/Gannon - This would be a two headed monster I believe. Madden is getting up there in age, he doesn't like to travel, his family is growing up all around him and are based in the East Bay. He might want to stay closer to home. A position as Sr. Executive would be fitting. We can't deny his football knowledge either. Like him or not as an analyst, he KNOWS football, and he bleeds the Silver and Black. Gannon would be the GM, the guy has the brains, savvy, and passion to succeed here. Is it a big step for him? Maybe, but I have a feeling that Gannon is a fast learner. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on him.
In the NFL, you window is short, EVERY YEAR. With the salary cap, the competitive balance is always changing, we NEED a creative front office in order to get Raider Nation back on the map, EVERY YEAR. We are too historied a franchise to wallow in 11+ loss seasons. It's unacceptable.
We have some exciting players on our roster that should make us all feel very optimistic about what "could" be. With the right GM, FIRST, a dynamic head coach and some roster reshuffling, we could turn this thing around quickly.
Mr. Davis, it is up to YOU now to make the right choice. Bring us a GM that can help you bring us back to relevance again.

Madden as GM. Now that’s an interesting thought. I never even considered that. Gannon won’t.
Parcells – Unlikely due to the friendship w/ Davis, and they personality of the both of them, I just don’t think it would happen.
Pioli – Has been turning down jobs because he wants full control and doesn’t want to share w/ the Coach or anyone. Probably why he won’t go to KC.
Schottenheimer – Well I think you answered your own question here:
Can Mr. Davis put his ego aside to pull the strings on this one?
Now there is also a thought of Shell as GM possibly, and I’m just throwing that out because his last tenure was supposed to be HC then when that was done, he would President of Football Operations or some thing like that. But he got fired, so, I dunno.
Will Mooch come to Oakland? Probably. As a GM? Maybe. And I think he would be the best choice right now. He’s a smooth talker and he may be able to handle Davis the most.

Tim Brown
would be a great GM. He bleeds silver and black and he stated it kills him to see the Raiders suck so bad. I think he is a very smart guy/player and can probably build something great if given the chance.
I love the Madden/Gannon idea the most out of those choices. Madden wouldn’t want to return to the game after being out of it for so long I don’t think. I’m not sure if Gannon would want to or not but if he did that would be sweet. Steve Mariucci or Dennis Green could be good potential choices too.
No matter who the GM is, Al Davis is who wanted those free agents (Walker, Hall, Harris) so we definently need a GM to have full control and make the free agent signings and drafting decisions.

I have always thought
Dennis Green was a great coach and i also think he would make a great GM. And the throwing offence he ran is something Davis said he would like to get back to.

Maybe
but I still think he could draft better than we have been lately. He could probably spot better free agents too since he was a former player.

General Manager
I definitely agree that bringing in a general manager, if that is the thought within the Raiders organization, is the top issue. Other than Parcells, Pioli would definitely be my top choice; however, I don’t think either will be coming to Oakland in 2009.

Great Post
I love the idea of Madden coming here. Damn, it sounds good. Parcells sounds good, but I don’t see how Miami would let him go. I am 100% going with Mikesd1981 with Mucci coming here.

There's an opt out
clause in Parcell’s contract if Miami gets sold.

My votes are for
Madden or Parcells and probably neither will do it. Parcells is a turnaround man and Madden is the closest thing to what i want our next OWNER to be. He embodies everything the Raiders are, he’s had the highest winning percentage of any Raider coach, and knows how to find talent.

No brand name GM is going to touch the Raiders job if they can't hire "their" coach. And
since the Raiders are going to hire a coach before a GM, they’re going to hire a GM without experience (i.e. Al’s son, Todd Marinovich, Jim Otto, etc.). So you all can forget about Parcells and everybody else mentioned above.

wow that's the first thing you've said that actually makes sense

I'm glad (and surprised) you agree. I think it's funny that during Al's presser blasting Lane,
he said that the Raiders were in the process of “talking to a well know, successful GM about taking over that role for the Raiders” . And now Al’s looking to hire a coach before the GM? Huh?
As I said previously, no “well know, successful” GM would step into a role where he can’t hire his coach. So basically, the Raiders are going to follow the same coaching blueprint they’ve been using for the past few years.

I'm still pulling for a Cable/Madden
coach/GM combo, though it’ll never happen. Go Cable!!!! Al please keep him!!!!

Al will either keep Cable or go for Lofton for the following reasons:
1) He loves offensive coaches
2) Fassel is a tired choice
3) Harbough used the Raiders for the contract extension
4) Cable and Lofton do a great job of stroking Al’s ego
5) A name coach/big name assistant wouldn’t touch this job with a ten-foot pole

once again I completely agree
amazingly. I still would be delighted for Cable to stay.
