49ers looking at Rathman
according to Singletary he wants to "sit down with Rathman" and discuss either the offensive coordinator or running backs coaching position for the 49ers.
Is this another quality young coach that is going to escape due to the Raiders lack of movement? I hope not let's get him locked up for 2009 regardless of the head coach or general manager, or for that matter offensive coordinator.
Come on Raiders let start building something starting with the young players and coaches.

Rathman
Hey guys, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. Can you guys give me an idea of what Rathman has done for the Raiders as running backs coach? The Raiders have had some very solid rushing attacks, but how much of that is due to
1) the RB coach?
2) how much b/c of the OC in place?
3) how much because by trailing in a lot of games, defenses are playing the deep pass late in games and very willing to give up the run?

Rathman has the respect of the Players:
As far as how much of an impact he has had, it is really very difficult to guage. This team, from nearly every angle has been a complete mess for a while and it is hard to see the smoke through the clouds.
I, personally, feel that losing Rathman should NOT be an option. I also think that IF the Niners offer him the OC position then he will be gone. Al is working on another plan and it is hard to say if he would even be retained IF we bring in a new GM, depending upon who that coach is.
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

RB Coach
He interviewed today for the vacant RB coach position with the 49ers.
Here’s our discussion of it at Niners Nation. Most of us would like to see him brought in as RB coach and groomed to be head coach.
One question though is that he’s been an RB coach now since 1997 (49ers, Lions, Raiders). Why has he not been promoted above that to date given how long it’s been?

I don't know, I've never interviewed him:
BUT, I believe it is because he hasn’t really tried to move up. He could always go down to College and try being a coordinator or maybe a head coach at a low level D-1 school and work his way back up. Maybe he just likes the lifestyle and hasn’t been pushed beyond his comfort zone.
He seems to have all of the talent and it seems that your plan would be the best case scenario for him. In fact, nobody knows what is going to happen here, so SF may be the best bet for him at this point. I also think that he and Singletary will make a good team down the road and he is definitely the KIND of guy that Mike wants around him.
Singy doesn’t like artists, he likes MEN!!!! (And NO NOT like that)

I think you can ask those ???'s about any positional coach
However there is no denying that the Raiders rushing attack has been much improved since Rathman took over. We just drafted McFadden and didn’t have Bush last year either. LaMont was mostly hurt during his tenure so we NEVER have had that feature back so I would give a lot of credit to Rathman. Although Cable deserve’s his share as Line coach.
At Detroit, the Lions had success running so in retrospect I think Rathman deserves maybe more than he is even getting credit for.
At first glance I thought Singletary just liked Rathman’s style as a player and would mesh with his philosophy but looking at the bigger picture he might be what the Raiders need as offensive coordinator if Cable is retained.
Hopefully we see that before it is to late.

We can't lose Rathman
I want at least one more year out of him to better Bush and D-Mac.

There's no guarantee that
Davis would offer to extend his contract. Except for Lofty, every one’s contract is up in 6 days.
