2009 D-Line Free Agent List
Unlike the offensive line FA class for 2009, the below list for defensive linemen is going to be expensive to obtain an impact player. However, that being said, the Raiders would do well to add Suggs and/or Babineaux to their defensive front.
Julius Peppers, UFA, Carolina Panthers: Peppers is a known commodity as is his impact on the entire defense.
Albert Haynesworth, UFA, Tennessee Titans: The Titans look like a different team on defense depending on whether or not Haynesworth is on the field; with him on the field they are one of the best defenses in the league because of the pressure he took off of others.
Terrell Suggs, UFA, Baltimore Ravens: The Raiders know all too well what Suggs is capable of at defensive end.
Bertrand Berry, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Other Defensive Linemen
Jonathan Babineaux, UFA, Atlanta Falcons
Rocky Bernard, Seattle Seahawks
Kevin Carter, UFA, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Chris Canty, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
Shaun Cody, UFA, Detroit Lions
Jovan Haye, UFA, Tampa Bay Bucs
Tank Johnson, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
John Thornton, UFA, Cincinnati Bengals
Marcus Tubbs, UFA, Seattle Seahawks

wow
this year is stacked with D-Line and O-Linemen.
Suggs will never leave Baltimore he loves playing with Reed and Lewis, and im also sure they wont let him go.
Haynesworth is already working on an extension with Tenn.
Peppers is intriguing. I dont know about now but last offseason there were rumors of him in Denver. You know al would throw money all over him before he let him go to Denver. All in all i think suggs and peppers get franchised.
Bertrand Berry is another one im not so sure about. I think hes a great player but Zona is alreayd so thin on the defensive end of the football. I think they bring him back but im not sure what there cap situation looks like right now.
Of the rest of them list i would love Tubbs and babineaux. Who knows how the offseason will unfold i think its too soon to be looking at free agent lists. we dont really know whose a free agent until feb. 27th. By then most of these guys will be franchised and what not. Who knows what will happen just cross your fingers raider fans. lets hope one of these great players is in the silver and black next season!
Hit the clutch, hit the gear, hit the gas and im GONE!!!

Fingers and Toes crossed:

Cross Babineaux Off The List
He already signed an extension with Atlanta.
"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

sadly you're top three will mostly likely all be reatined
but Bernard, Carter, and Thornton are all pretty good.

pure speculation, but i would think the top three names would if nothing else, get franchise tagged..

Peppers being a free agent is good news
since he’ll likely get franchised instead of Gross. Either way they’re going to risk losing a very talented player.
Everyone wishing for Tubbs, he’s done. He couldn’t pass a physical with Seattle after all the surgeries he had on his knee and was cut last year.
Outside of the first 3 guys mentioned and Javon Haye this is a crop of free agents to stay away from. Most of them are aging vets, a few of them with injury histories, and the rest are nothing special. Don’t overspend here, draft some talent instead.

Before everyone gets excited about FA's
One should remember the Raiders had the HIGHEST payroll in 2008, and I am not so sure it is going to be lower in 2009 with players raises.
So let’s temper the enthusiam until we see if we can actually afford anyone !!

Tank Johnson
could probably be acquired pretty cheap. He was great in Chicago which ran a 4-3 defense(like Oakland.) Then he went to Dallas who plays a 3-4 scheme and he didn’t do so hot. If we had Tank Johnson, Tommy Kelly, and Terdell Sands, well….that should plug up the run I would hope. Trade off Gerard Warren and William Joseph and get a solid DT in the draft sounds like it would be the best way of going about it.
Trevor Scott and Kalimba Edwards should be the starters going into next year. Scott got 5 sacks in limited playing time which was tied for the lead along with Edwards who also had 5. Burgess was injured but doesn’t seem to want to be here any more since Sapp retired. I love the guy and he led the league in sacks with 16 and made the pro bowl at one point in his career. But money talks and I don’t think he earned that extension he wants. If he’ll stay in Oakland for a cheaper price then i’m all for keeping him. But if not we got some young talent with Trevor Scott and maybe Greyson Gunheim who sacked Jeff Garcia in the last game which officially ended the Bucs playoff hopes.
We could probably trade Burgess for something good but I am still angry we let Chris Clemons slip away to the Eagles after his 8 sack performance for us. :(

Punisher
I’ am very optimistic about Scott. But, you made a good point. He only had limited time. This is also the reason he got the sacks. He was put into the game when he was fresh and the opposing team was worn out. He is not so great when it is the beginning of the game.
