Raiders reportedly to interview Winston Moss
Mercury News reports Green Bay Packers assistant head coach and linebackers coach Winston Moss is scheduled to interview with Raiders managing general partner Al Davis, possibly as soon as today, about the team's coaching vacancy, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Davis' interviewing Moss would satisfy the league's so-called Rooney Rule that mandates teams interview at least one minority candidate before hiring a coach.
Moss played linebacker for the Raiders in 1991-94. He interviewed for the St. Louis Rams' coaching vacancy last Saturday.
The Journal-Sentinel also reported that the Raiders are interested in hiring fired Packers defensive-backs coach Lionel Washington. He played for the Raiders in 1987-94.
The Raiders official said Washington's name also has been mentioned by Davis in recent days but that no interview was scheduled.
Raiders are denying University of Washington defensive coordinator Ed Donatell interviewed. This was reported Jan 09.

Winston Moss
Well, I don’t know much about the man, but I’d consider him a long shot.

I hope so
this does sound like a Rooney Rule thing but I hope that they did interview Donatell. We need to get this staff together and quick.

Most likely for DC
His interview is more than likely going to be for Defensive Coordinator. Mortensen reported that Cable could be hired as soon as monday (but i really do not trust him when it comes to Raiders info) haha.

so so true
I don’t trust anybody but real Oakland reporters like Jerry McDonald. Anything ESPN puts out is incredibly biased against Oakland. And it seems like ESPN doesn’t report things until two days after the reporters of the teams do.

Moss is just being interviewed for Rooney
rule reasons. I doubt he is a candidate for defensive coordinator but might be brought in in another capacity. It looks like Cable is a shoo in, all other coaches are up in the air. I would think Cable will be named head coach early next week, then finding coaches will be the order of the day. I don’t count out Ryan staying in Oakland.

I still want Milliard as DC
but I would settle for moss or donatell.
My personal order of D-Coordinators:
1. Keith Milliard
2. Winston Moss’
3. Ed Donatell

I Don't Know Any Of These Guys
I’ am being honest. I have no idea how these guys work. It would be nice if someone would post something dealing with the OC, DC coaches.

Winston Moss =

I’m very torn about the Rooney Rule. On the one hand, it’s unfortunate not to see many minority head coaches in either the NFL or the collegiate level, particularly given the number of minority players in football today. On the other hand, you’ve got guys like Winston Moss traveling around the country taking one for the NFL to satisfy this rule without a real shot at getting the job.
I don’t think the Rooney Rule really works. Al Davis didn’t need it to hire Tom Flores or Art Shell. Romeo Crennel probably didn’t need it, nor will Leslie Frazier either this year or in the very near future. It may have helped Mike Tomlin a bit, but he was basically on the same track as Frazier is now. It would be hard to argue now that either Tony Dungy or Lovie Smith would need the rule to get a job now.
I don’t see Moss being brought it for defensive coordinator either. Reports regarding Moss’ interview with St. Louis said that Moss struggled answering questions about defensive schemes, so an interview with Al Davis would likely be disastrous given how astute Davis is with the X’s and O’s.
If the job is really Cable’s, then what is likely to happen is that he and Al will discuss a short list of acceptable candidates and Al will let Cable pick from that list. Either that or Al will let Cable take care of the offense and Al will, once again, take care of the defense.
"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

I think the Rooney Rule does help to
some extent. It all depends on the ownership though. Some owners will actually take the time and listen to these while others just fly them in to satisfy the requirement. Al Davis has always been an innovator. He hired Amy Trask to the highest post a female has ever been placed in the NFL . He also hired the first hispanic and the first black head coach.
If anything the Rooney Rule gives some of these coaches to put their name out and be heard. Thats all that can be done.
