update w/ podcast: Tim Ryan on Gary Radnich show: "Gruden open to a return to Oakland"

Tim Ryan, FoxSports Analyst who is doing the Raider vs Eagle game this weekend was just on Gary Radnich Show on KNBR was talking Raider Football and had some interesting points. Being personally close to Jon Gruden he had good points:

- Gruden will coach again and has the "coaching itch" and wants get back to it

- Knowing Gruden personally, as long as Tim Ryan has know Jon he has never heard Gruden say anything negative    about Mr. Davis both "on and off the record"

- Gruden open to coming back to Oakland

- Bruce Allen would follow Gruden Back to Oakland

update: Ryan interview podcast (thanks to iBleedSnB).  Also a Bleacherreport article on this subject here

Totally agree with you

Plus, even if Davis did bring Chucky back, he’d probably think he’s doing Chucky a favor and give him even less influence in the team than before.

the only solution

It’s not going to happen, but I think is the only way out of this huge mess Mr Davis has created, is really frustrating to watch this team, it has absolutely no direction, no leadership, no pride, nothing at all,

the only way to right the ship is bringing back Gruden, Allen or some other ‘competent’ GM, and Madden as an advisor, but I might only be dreaming,

for now we’ll have to keep hoping that our fat ass qb gets injured or something for him to get benched and at least give somebody else a shot to move that freakin offense

I really do believe that Gruden is up for the challenge as long as it’s under his terms and not AD. But AD’s pride and ego maybe in the way of something great! I promise you, Cable is not ready for a “head coach” position on any NFL team. Maybe UFL. Not NFL.

I think it's not fair to judge him

like that yet. It’s w/ the Raiders. I think he’s not ready to wear as many hats as he is w/ the o-line, offense coordinator, and HC.

I would LOVE to have Chucky back

when he was here you could tell (and still can tell) that he LOVED being the coach of the RAIDAAHHS and he is an intense guy who does not accept mediocrity.
I like Tom Cable but it is clear he is not capable of turning this around. and is way over his head.

I hate the coaching changes, but this team needs a coach that can light a fire under their butts. I don’t think Cable has it in him. Gruden may never come back, but someone like him is what his team needs.

The player talent on the Raiders is not as bad as their record or as bad as they play under Cable. Cable is not suited to be an NFL head coach. I doubt Gruden would ever come back, but I’d welcome him if he did.

by II Chaos II on Oct 16, 2009 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

he did. he's one of the only guys alive that has proven and could again

that he can win with the Raiders. But he had a guy named Rich Gannon, whom he credits as one of the best and hardest working students of the game he’s met. That’s a serious compliment coming from Jon.

But, if the past decade since his departure is any indicator of what’s to come…

Let’s just say none of us, at least none that know a thing or two about our track record, are expecting this to happen anytime soon.

no doubt he would

just like Gannon, Charlie Garner to name a couple. Remember that offense? We could dink a dunk the best Tampa 2 teams to death!

Man, how long has it been since we completed that many consetive passes? it had to be Gannon and company. Know Kerry Collins had some success, but don’t remember him lighting up the scoreboard like Gannon did.

The only way Gruden would come back is if he had the same control he had, which leaves in question the validity of any of these rumors.

At least we know that Gruden would be willing to return. It’s pretty obvious Al is not totally willing to relinquish control, yet, that is…

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!

by mikesd1981 on Oct 17, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

you're right, we don't, but I'm taking Tim Ryan's word for it on speaking with Jon

Ryan is no lover of the Raiders. I’ve listened to him on Sirius radio regularly with Pat Kirwan, and he doesn’t pull punches when discussing Raider info. And we otherwise have no real reason to think he’d be against coming back, but I believe he would stipulate that he’d want control, or no deal, which brings us back to square one.

Despite not doing anything with the picks, the Raiders received an unprecedented amount of picks and monetary compensation for Gruden in the pick, and T. Ryan said he’s never heard Gruden say one bad thing about Al, nor have I. I know that’s no reason to think he loves Al, but unwilling to come back? I think not.

by brhynno on Oct 17, 2009 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

furthermore, do I think it will happen? of course not.

Do I remain hopeful for a miracle like this, or some other godsend coach to deliver us from the pit that is the Raider team we have now?

Absolutely. And I wouldn’t be so hard on the poster; he never claimed Jon Gruden said he’d come back, but in the interview, Tim Ryan entertains the idea. That’s all he said to pay attention to. Are some of us delusional about hope for the future. Of course we are. We’re Raiders fans.

His title of the post

used the exact words of:

“Gruden open to return to Oakland”

There was no ? at the end to make it sound as a possible. He made it sound as a fact. And To get the picks for the trade of Gruden to TB means Gruden WANTED TO LEAVE Oakland…….

So…

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!

by mikesd1981 on Oct 17, 2009 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand your point, but it's not like I'm taking something a poster says, especially in his title

for granted. A lot of these folks probably do think there’s a chance in hell that Gruden would come back, and most of the people that are pulling for Jamarcus, or thinking we’ll somehow start defending the run, or that we’ll start getting first downs and completions and series without drive killing penalties, don’t have any facts or even good reasons to support what they’re saying. Simply because there aren’t any.

Sometimes you have to take posts on a blog with a grain of salt.

Al Davis said that there will SOON be a change to the head coach in Oakland:

I would really love to see Chucky back with the Raiders but we will have to wait and see what happens with USC and Notre Dame this weekend I feel if Charlie Wies gets fired in South Bend Chucky will be their next coach, after all isn’t this what started this big mess to begin with.I really think most of the Nation still loves Gruden but who knows what goes on in Big Al’s crazyass head. For anybody to have any success in Oakland they would need more control or have the power of persuasion which i believe Gruden happens to possess.I think its clear by his words on MNF he still wants to coach and I for one would welcome him back.

I'd be surprised if Gruden came back to the Raiders

there really isn’t an upside for him. He already has the rep as being the last guy to have much success in Oakland so all he can do is repeat his past success or fail which is obviously quite possible.

I think he’ll want a new challenge and much more control over the football operations than Davis is willing to give but hey it doesn’t hurt to dream as it would be fun to have a professional head coach again.

Long line of coaches?

What long line is there? No one “wants” this job unless Al let’s go of his overall control. Sign Gruden and get Bruce Allen back and let them make the football decisions. Al could then spend his remaining years wathching the Raiders return to glory!

Just thought it was funny

Never heard of two coaches going at it on the sidelines before.

On the Giants website, they credit Gilbride with helping Manning develop. It’s probably just fluff, but I’m sure it’s just what Al Davis wants to hear, to find somebody to work with Russell.

not questioning these guys coaching abilities. I'm questioning their ability to work with Al

which is always a factor. It’s why I get excited about a guy like Gruden, though I know it’s bullshit, and just something some guy threw out in an interview.

I don’t even really question Cable’s ability. He’s just not the personality that can work with Al these days. I’m not sure anyone can, but I’d take my chances with Jon. Madden was fiery. I can’t say I even know how Tom Flores was, but few have had success in this organization, and most of those times Ron Wolf was in the picture in some capacity.

I think Gilbride is exactly the type of guy Cable is

good at what he does, but head coach?. If not for Coughlin, would he be the same? Also a great drafting team, for a long time.

It’s always tough to really gauge any individual’s performance with the Raiders, considering so many factors against them.

by brhynno on Oct 17, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably not

But it sounds exactly the type of guy Al would go after. You know he’s not going to try and get a real coach. I mean, the only name I’d heard being floated around was Jim Harbaugh, and that with everybody knowing how college coaches do when they come to the NFL.
