Oakland Raiders Takes: Upon Further Review This Season is not a Lost Cause
After five weeks of the 2009 NFL season teams are beginning to define their identities. As Dennis Green would say, "The teams are who we think they are." This does not mean that all teams will remain stagnant in their identity.
There is still a lot of season left. Time enough for teams that are currently treading water to develop that tread into a Michael Phelps sprint. There are also enough games left for teams, looking like serious Super Bowl contenders, to be exposed as frauds or succumb to the injuries that are inevitable in this brutal sport.
The bottom feeders, however, are not going to inspire much hope for anything other than little improvements and moral victories. Signs that ultimately point to nothing greater than the suggestion that next year will be different.
It is completely unrealistic to hope for any team with zero to one win(s) this year to make a run at the playoffs. Strong performances and signs of growth, thrown in with an upset or two in games played with maximum effort, can be enough to salvage the jobs of coaches and give fans a hopeful outlook during the long off season (look no further than last year’s Raiders team).
Ultimately, the chance that any of these teams will create a meaningful impact in this season is reduced to them knocking a team out of the playoffs towards the end of the year.
The Oakland Raiders are different. There is no doubt they will make serious noise the rest of this NFL season.
Not because they are going to make the playoffs or go on a prolonged winning streak, but because the onslaught of criticism cast upon everyone’s favorite red headed step team is going to grow.
This is a team that is widely regarded as the biggest joke in the NFL. I do not get it though- I can’t find the humor in this joke anywhere. Instead I am stuck on the outside, shaking my head, as I try to find positives to take out of a season that gets a lot more black and a little less silver with each passing week.
The Raiders started this season hanging onto tangible signs of hope. They showed signs of improvement at the end of last year. This was a young team with lots of potential.
Russell finished last season strong. Darren McFadden and Michael Bush had the potential to be the best young RB duo in the league. Chaz Schillens was poised to emerge as a legitimate number one while leading a young and improved receiving corps to a long forgotten promise land.
Al Davis listened to his head coach and offensive line guru, Tom Cable, by trading for Samson Satele and picking up free agent Kahlif Barnes to solidify the offensive line. Mario Henderson ended last season like he was going to make the Left Tackle position his.
The biggest concern of the defense was its inability to slow down opponents run game, particularly on the outside of the defensive line. This concern quickly turned into yet another source of hope when Richard Seymour was acquired via trade.
Let’s take a look in to see how these seeds of hope are growing. Russell looks uninterested in improving and has regressed. McFadden does not look durable enough to be an NFL running back. Schillens has not played a game yet.
The offensive line is ineffective, injury plagued and getting worse. Satele has been such a disappointment that Cable benched the guy he hand picked in favor of the incredibly over matched Chris Morris. Kahlif Barnes has spent most of his time healing and currently is having difficulty adjusting to any position that is not occupied by the one healthy and competent lineman, Mario Henderson.
The run defense, while improved, is still giving up to many big plays. While the defensive line has morphed, from a weakness to a strength, it has done little but point out that this team is many changes away from competitive.
At this point in time, any single person who proclaims to be a Raider fan gains a lifelong exemption from having to ever be considered a bandwagon jumper (and should also receive a coupon for free mental counseling). This team literally has zero things going in its favor.
Oh wait… the kickers are good and are having career years. Also, nothing horrible as befallen Henderson and actually he may be proving himself worthy of the off season hope he inspired.
There are so many opinions floating around on the ills and possible cures for the Oakland Raiders that even the most half hearted NFL fan seems to have legitimate answers that would improve them or what ideas on what is holding them back.
When I recently asked four-year old Sally Stevens what she thought of the Raiders she replied, "Al Davis is bat-shit crazy."
This falls right in line with the two popular opinions on the problems of the Oakland Raiders: "Al Davis is a senile, control freak, vampire" and "Jamarcus Russell once had talent and a brain, but he ate them and now they are stuck in his fat ass."
I am not here to retread thoughts on improving the Raiders. These thoughts leave me feeling hollow, because they are unrealistic. Al Davis is not going to change and he is not going anywhere. As far as player changes go, at QB or elsewhere, anything short of trading the Raiders for the Giants is not going to help this overmatched team.
Suffering from the irreversible affliction of silver and black blood, I have realized that I can either continue to be miserable, while hoping and looking for changes that will never materialize- or I can change my expectations and hopes for this team.
If I want to gain any satisfaction out of this season, other than the fulfillment that arrives with victorious hate rooting, I need to change my perception of victories.
Instead of rooting for victories I shall root for points. Every game the Raiders score a touchdown I will put a tally in the win column. In light of this they are 3-2 and have a strong chance of being a .500 team.
I will view first downs as touchdowns. Given this scoring system the Raiders would have beat the Giants 49-42 last week in a thrilling game that saw the Raiders get their seventh and winning touchdown via penalty.
I will count every Russell completion to a WR as a touchdown. Russell already has 17 touchdowns this year and Louis Murphy is on pace to break Randy Moss’ record as he already has 12 TD’s. Top pick Heyward-Bey is off to a slow start with only two TD’s this year, but has a solid 20 catches (I am going to count every time Heyward-Bey is targeted as a catch).
Every game McFadden misses with an injury I am just going to chalk up as another 100-yard game. With two 100-yard games this season McFadden has already doubled his total from last year.
From now on, when McFadden does play, I am going to view every time he fumbles, but the Raiders recover, as a rushing TD. McFadden had a solid game against the Broncos with two TD’s. Which brings his total to three on the year- combine this with his two 100-yard games and he may be starting to fulfill the potential his talent points towards.
Henceforth, every snap an offensive lineman does not have a penalty I am going to view it as job well done. Cornell Green still sucks, but the others are looking better.
Every snap, that the Raider with the football does not get hit behind the line of scrimmage, I am going to chalk up to offensive line dominance. All of a sudden it seems like Cable has really worked his magic and turned this group around
On defense, it is CFL rules. Anytime the Raiders keep the opposing team from getting a first down before third down I am going to consider it a stop. At 80-54 The Raiders are still giving up more first downs then they getting but this defense is coming around.
The defense looks even better once I stop counting all touchdowns scored against the Raiders on plays of more than 10 yards, instead of being out TD’d 14-4 it is only 6-4.
The defense looks even better still, once I get to take away plays, of my choosing, run by the opposition until time of possession is even (that is 11 minutes worth of plays a game). It’s not fair that teams always get to have the ball so much longer than the Raiders.
All of a sudden the Raider defense is beginning to look like one of the best in the league and the young offense is coming together while starting to turn their potential into a reality.
The night is always darkest before the dawn my friends and with my new evaluation of Raider success I feel that we have broken this long dark night. This season is turning and the seeds of hope are blossoming. Sure, this still may not be a super bowl contending team, but I can finally enjoy a Raider season with a smile knowing that things are going in the right direction.

That's some mighty powerful kool aid you're peddlin'
But I’ll pass and stick with reality that is the Raiders. It’s not as much fun to watch, but I don’t run the risk of my family trying to put me in a mental ward.

Dude
I realize Halloween is coming, and schizophrenia goes nicely with that, but really. Coping with reality is much more healthy than inventing your own lest you find yourself wearing one of those not-so comfy jackets in a really soft, white room.

What are you trying to say?
Do you not think the NFL will let the Raiders use my new system of evaluation for official stat keeping? Damn it! I suppose the next thing you will tell me is the Great Pumpkin is not real.
If my family really cared they would have already committed me for my hopeless Raider addiction. Of course I would just look at my father and say “I learned it by watching you ok? I learned it by watching you!”

All right then
That’s good enough for me. Count me in!
Just when we get to the funny farm, if there’s any voices telling you about this new system, don’t tell the doctors. Makes for an extended stay, and I just know the food’s going to be terrible.

Face reality, please...
Trying to paint this Raiders team as having any real positives is as bad as trying to pass off a cheap whore as a virgin. Facts are facts: this year’s team is BAD. The owner is stuck in a time warp, forever batting the ghost of Pete Rozelle and everyone who he still thinks is out to get him. He won’t hire a (competent) GM. He castrates his head coaches so that they can’t make a decision without consulting him first (he is still the head coach, just one with a walker). That’s why J. Russel is still playing…even AFTER he has fumbled 3 times against the Giants. I witnessed the Massacre at the Meadowlands. As usual, Russell will hit every receiver during pregame warmups. It’s during the game, when it counts, that he can’t hit his receivers.
Come back to earth…PLEASE!!!

People can be funny...
This post is a tongue and cheek way of pointing out how bad the Raiders have played. And how hopes of them improving are bleak.
Also numerous people say Russell misses people in warm-ups, practice, high fiving, handing the remote, etc… not just the games.
Wherever I go, that's where I am.

It's entirely possible...
that the Raiders are a tongue-in-cheek version of a pro football team. Anyone remember “North Dallas Forty?” Right now, there are 31 teams in the NFL, and then there are the Raiders. The lack of passion doesn’t allow them the privilege of even being in the league right now. The LIONS play harder than the Raiders do. This season, they’re going for being the cheap whores of the NFC East. The Giants slapped them around, and now the Eagles are lining up, pulling the panites down around the Raiders’ ankles. “Bend over, this is gonna hurt REAL BAD!!”

It ain't just us, people
Thet Rams, Browns, Bills, Chiefs, Bucs fans feel much the same way. Some of them might even figure they’re better than us, but some of them are winless, and so would be hard-pressed to make any claims.
Consider that St. Louis has scored less than we have, and given up more points. Nobody could seriously argue they’re better.
The Bills are probably better than us, but after that game against Cleveland, their case is harder to argue. Their fans also put up a billboard against the team.
Lions fans are considerably more upbeat and objective in their forum than we are here, but still their defense is the absolutely worst points-wise.
The Bucs are probably better than us, but they’re almost as negative in their forum as we are.
Chiefs are probably slightly better than us, but bad luck and hella penalties has put them at 0-5. And that’s with Cassell having a good season. They sound pretty glum in their forum.

where are the trick plays and Higgins?
I’m not saying it’s going to all of the sudden win games for us, but at the end of last year at least they tried and some trick plays actually worked, Cable had the guys playing hard and at least they seemed to care, now everything is gone!!
I know our qb can’t complete the basic nfl pass on a regular basis (a 5 yard dump to a RB), but we haven’t even tried getting the ball to Higgins in short passes that we know he can take all the way, put him in the damn slot and throw him the rock!!!
Another thing I don’t understand is why keep playing DHB if he can’t run a correct route, where the heck is J Walker (if he’s not going to play cut him),
We all should hope that at some point someone realizes that we need to bench Jabusts, because either way if Davis thinks he our qb of the future you’re crushing his confidence right now (of course everybody else knows that this guy sucks and is not the answer short term, long term or whatever)

Seriously
You have this complex that imaginary Russell fans are coming out of the woodwork to get you. The only one I’ve seen doing this is Nishal who has unusual sense of humor. Other people are actually trying to analyze what’s went wrong, what could be done, what are the contributing factors, etc. But all you’re saying over and over and over again is “Russell sucks!”. Okay, we get it. You hate the guy. You’ve made it abundantly clear already. It borders on paranoia.

It makes sense finally
I think you stumbled onto Al Davis’s style of score keeping. That explains why earring boy is still playing..he is exchanging his weight for his QB rating. Seriously, the only good thing to come of this season wil be the elimination of all the poser fans. Those of us watching in December harboring hope deep inside will be the true fans. At least we can have pride in our dedication to our team. Perhaps those lucky enough to don the Silver and Black should learn from us.

so sad
As a long time raider fan, this article makes me pretty sad cause I thought I was the only one that thought this way. How pathetic for us raider fans to have to use a different way to evaluate our team vs. all of the other teams.
I watch the games with one of my friends (a cowboys fan) and have to explain to him why I’m happy when the raiders loose by only 5 touchdowns. I tell him thats not bad for the raiders, they can do worse. Or how if Russell has a 100 yard passing game, or how if Fargas can gain 4 yards on a play, how that is something to be proud of.
Yes, long gone are the days of Gannon, Brown, Rice, where the Raiders ruled the AFC – What a tumble the Raiders have taken, and its not going to change until fAil Davis tumbles himself. sigh. =/

If you think this team has hope...
then you need to put down the pipe. I have been a season ticket holder for 10 years now, and it is worse than ever. The Art Shell team had more promise than this one. We need to cut our losses, trade everyone, and start over through the draft (but draft wisely, not stretching for crap). NOthing will matter until a GM comes on to make the decisions. Al can’t scout from a wheelchair in his office. THis team is doomed until further notice.
Note to you who state that the fans that say negative things are not “real fans”. Get your heads out of your asses. THis is the worst 7 year run in the history of the NFL. If you don’t think there is a problem, then you need to get your freaking head checked.

I do not understand how al cannot see
That al the owner would have fired al the gm about 15 times this decade. Before this last awful period at least all could point to the fact in general we were winning or at least competitive, basically since chucky left we have not even been close to competitive so there is literally no success to hang his hat on. I think the biggest disappointment this year is just the lack of passion, at the end of last season it really seemed they were getting on the same page and the in the SD game zero since and all momentum is lost
"Mel Kiper has his opinion and I respect it. But what does it mean? My 9-year-old nephew can watch film and make an opinion. I think I value the opinion of scouts who get paid to make their opinions. It will carry me through my career. It will serve as motivation for me." - Mike Mitchell

Dread
This is killing me, i mean all us Raider fans have endured some tough times and very serious droughts but this is terrible. We have so much talent on this team and nobody wants to step up and tell everyone to shut the fuck up and play. If we could get all the distractions out of the locker room and pull it together we could easily win this division and more. Jamarcus needs to overcome his fear of stage fright because he is being paid several millions of dollars to be on Center stage, suck it up and play. This is killing me.

that’s all I ask today. Show up, make the stops on D; several 3 and outs. Put us with field positions to get some easy field goals. OL to block someone, anyone to allow JR that extra second to settle. Get some 4-5 yards on 1st down rushing to give a realistic 3rd down play. Just pretend that you’re pros with pride. just show up for 60 minutes and build from the effort. that’s all I ask….

ok
i know it has nothing to do with this post, but i have a question
i noticed that we gave up lorenzo neal claiming that we have faith that oren oneal has the ability to be the next lorenzo neal or maybe even better….
lorenzo neal, arguably the best fullback in the league (or at least the division)
i know hes old, but the guy can play. he can catch, run, block, hes a great leader, hes just plain good.
now back to oneal. he was so good it was unnoticeable. lame….
now we CUT oneal to make room for langston walker
i know all the injuries n whatnot are hurting the o line, but we have plenty of garbage ppl to cut *cough*stanfordRoutt*cough* so we can make room.
am i the only one who noticed we let go of a pro bowl fullback to keep a guy that gets cut by week 6????
oh n btw if we figure out we have a hole in our backup secondary, chris mcalister (remember hearing a little blip about us looking at him?) is still a free agent.
