WR Core
With Chaz Schillens back, who will be number two on the depth chart. I know it will be Chaz, Louis and HayBey. But in which order? Louis Murphy is working his ass off on the field. Its like he doesnt quite know he plays for the Raiders. But I think that Ol' Raider curse has been lifted. Johhnie Lee has proven to be a deep threat. And im still waiting for Heybey to explode. I think Jamarcus needs to take a little of the fastball when passing to him. At least untill he gets used to the burns on his hands and welts on his chest. Thats a joke.HAHA. J-Russ hasn't hit a man in the chest since Pop Warner. But I hope he starts to get the job done.
I believe it should go 1) Chaz Schillens. 2) Louis Murphy. 3) Heyward-Bey. 4) Lee Higgins or Todd Watkins. Depending on if Johhnie Lee is able to play or not. Do you, the people of Silver and Black Pride, agree or disagree? Let me know.

Wide Receiver Depth Chart
Schilens is definitely first and Higgins and Watkins would go fourth and fifth respectively. I guess in a perfect world, Heyward-Bey would have emerged into a threat. He hasn’t, though, so Murphy is probably the number two guy. It would be better if Heyward-Bey was a contributor right now so he could stretch the field with his speed. It’d be nice to have Schilens as the possession receiver and Heyward-Bey as the speed threat; however, Heyward-Bey hasn’t showed up.
1. Chaz Schilens
2. Louis Murphy
3. Darrius Heyward-Bey
4. Johnnie Lee Higgins
5. Todd Watkins

Not much of a group right now
hopefully DHB and Murphy can grow into good players but when a guy with 15 career catches is your number 1 that is a cause for concern.

I was right for once. Man…I should be getting paid to distribute my brilliance like this.lol
And its really sad to hear NFL analysts insult Al. But its real sad for them to be right on point with there insults.

Heyward-Bey
Reminds me of a receiver who was also a bust in his rookie year. Ted Ginn Jr. Can’t judge the rookie yet; EVERYBODY knew he wasn’t a Randy Moss type of player to emerge GREAT his first season.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Javon Walker
He never plays. Todd Watkins has done better than him. Schilens’ return just means that it’s more likely that Walker is inactive.

apparently he's shown he's worthless
both to coaches and fellow teammates. Murhpy is the number two, and behind that it’s questionable, but I like DHB as the x-factor. That speed can and will be deadly when he gets it together.

Agreed.
It will probably be Schilens, Murphy, Heyward-Bey (It’s still Al’s Team), Between Walker and Watkins, and Higgins.

I get so tired of reading
that Russell didn’t hit the guy in the chest so they are not completed. Watch some other games and you will see play after play where other receivers leap in the air, turn backwards, lay out to catch passes but in Oakland if the ball is not perfect our receivers have no prayer or catching it. Even simple plays where they do hit them in the chest, they drop the passes. The simple fact is that Russell’s stats look terrible but it is not ALL HIS FAULT. I watched Flacco the other day just throw the ball up for grabs, into tight coverage and even into double teams but his receivers leaped and caught the ball, so Flacco looks great. You cannot discount the fact that if receivers constantly drop passes they should catch and others they probably should catch that lack of confidence creeps in. By the way, the pass the refs said Murphy didn’t catch, on replay it looks like he did and it never hit the ground.

we'll get some bad calls against us, and that one to Murphy is a robbed touchdown from his rookie statbook as far as I'm concerned
but I’m a firm believer if the ball hits your hands at all, it’s a catchable ball. How many spectacular catches have we seen from the elite guys in the league? they catch the ones that hit them in the hands, at least 85% of the time.
Everyone is given to the occasional drop, but only certain guys do it with consistency. As a receiver, it’s appalling—I mean, they’re receivers, not droppers. sounds like reason to fire someone to me. We knew DHB would be a 1 to 2 year development in progress, so I’m not tripping on him.
Besides, look how many balls TO straight up drops!

At Maryland DHB was just a straight line speedster with average hands. His size got him drafted. He also played in a weakened ACC. For your sake I hope he pans out but I think Crabtree will have more impact in his first game Sunday than Bey has so far this year.

The argument should not be dhb vs crabtree
But Louis Murphy vs crabtree… And in that context, I believe Murphy will have a better season

of course he will
because DHB is a long-term project while Crabtree is already pretty much in his prime. DHB will get better, it’s just a matter of time.

Crabtree hasn't done anything
i don’t know what made you decide Crabtree is in his prime already. He doesn’t even have stats yet. I think even if he has a good day Sunday, it will still be hard for me to call him “in his prime”
I can go ahead and call him “in his primadonna”
by B.A.Armstrong on Oct 22, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
by in his prime I meant
he had pretty much peaked his college game which means I don’t expect him to really develop very much in the NFL. Meanwhile, DHB was clearly still growing and getting better. Yet he was still considered first-round talent when he still has so much room to grow.
Crabtree to me will only amount to a Jerrico Cotchery, DHB could end up becoming one the best deep threats in the NFL after a year or two of development.

Cliff Branch number two baby!
He’s a fierce worker, a high character kid, demonstrates the right kind of leadership characteristics and a genuine desire to get to be the best he can be.
That, my friend, is a recipe for guaranteed success. And it doesn’t hurt that he runs 40’s in the sub 4.3 category. I can’t knock Al on this guy, especially when you compare his upsides to the alternative first round receivers’ downsides.
by brhynno on Oct 24, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
no way i take a “project” guy that high up in the draft with that type of money. he better come out ballin’ for that cash. rounds 3+ are for long-term projects.
by raven on Oct 22, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
top rounds are always a crapshoot, and there's a rule teams and experienced draft rooms adhere to:
If you want a guy, you take him when he’s there. I hated that number one pick, but they must’ve at least thought someone else was interested and that he might not be available if they waited around.
They said they wanted a character guy; DHB is that guy. They were pretty clear in what they were looking for in a wideout (big, strong, fast). No other alternative had the same skill set like Darrius. He’ll learn the route tree, and to explode in and out of breaks.
And playing against the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha, he’ll learn to fight off jams and techniques to get open against the more savvy dbacks he’ll face down the road.

Hopefully Higgins can get in a groove...
If he does I like him as the main slot WR. Right now the outside WR’s need to be Schillens and Murphy with DHB picking up the scraps.

I don't this group will do much but
Give Jamarcus another WR to over or underthrow. We all know Chaz can catch but we also know how inept Jamarcus is. Chaz Schelins has about the same amount of catches and td’s as Jeremy Maclin and he has mcnabb getting the ball… So that says much about our WR’s chances of being productive. I think it’s ZMiller or nothing, and if our run game isn’t effective then you can kiss any form of hope goodbye.

have you looked up in three weeks?
In Houston JMR hit 23 of 33 passes on the money, nine drops, and an overturnde Murphy call made his stats look bad.
In New York, he hit 61.5%
last week, he hit 60.7%
He is hitting his stride now, and his next step is to carry his first half last week on for the whole game.
Schilens return couldn’t be better timing
by B.A.Armstrong on Oct 22, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
U don't have to look at his stats
To know that he’s unproductive… How many first downs has he converted? Look that up for me while you’re at it. In order for Jamarcus to become successful, the WRs have to make plays… ie run 89 yrds for a td, leap 8 Ft in the air hoping they don’t get blind sided… I can guarantee Jamarcus will not throw for 300 yards so you can bet that the if we do win, it will be do to our defense

Look up our PPG
It’s like 10.3… If youre ensuing that Jamarcus will throw 2 td’s in one game then I wish that were to happen but I wouldn’t bet on it. Chaz will not make that much of a difference in my opinion other than provide hope! I predict that We win because of our D…

Game plan
Personally, I would love to see the Raiders come out with 4 WRs on a regular basis against the Jets. Have Chaz split wide right, DHB next to him in the slot, Fargas or Bush in the backfield, Higgins slot left and Murphy wide left.
This will spread out the opposing defense and you might just get a LB or safety covering DHB in the slot. This is the number one matchup you want to exploit. If this is the case, you want to send the rookie first rounder on a deep post with Chaz running a deep out or a WR drag. On the other side, you have JLH run a quick slant and skinny post almost every play—he has the quickness to do well in the slot and once he gets that ball he can do his little “shot out of a cannon” thing and run it upfield for a huge gain. With Murphy, I’d like to see him run a lot more curl and WR comeback patterns. I think J-Russ needs to have at least one player showing him his chest.
Beyond the passing plays, this creates an opportunity to get the RB some opportunities without 9 men in the box. It doesn’t take a genius to see that this isn’t a running formation so you can see how the team could be at a disadvantage trying to run the ball. On the other hand, when the Raiders show up in a running situation, the blockers end up being outnumbered by the defenders. This will give an opportunity for the offensive line to man up on their guy and let the RB make plays.
Wrinkles to add to this—when Darren McFadden comes back from his injury, the Raiders can have both Bush/Fargas and McFadden out there and have McFadden lineup in the slot with Bush or Fargas in the backfield. This will mask the kind of play the Raiders are running. They can also substitute Miller for JLH as he has proven to be a very effective receiver. Again, this would mask the kind of play the Raiders would be running.
It would be in the Raiders best interest to do what they can to use their WRs to create mismatches and spread out the defenses. To this point, their offense has been very vanilla, doing nothing to stop the defense from putting 9 men in the box. The defense finally came around last Sunday to add more wrinkles to the scheme—now it’s the offense’s turn.

Let's do this
Four wide sets and run right up the middle where Kris Jenkins used to be.
by B.A.Armstrong on Oct 22, 2009 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
my one problem with coming out passing
is that this Jets team will blitz and create a lot of pressure and has an amazing secondary with Lito Sheppard, Darelle Revis, Kerry Rhodes, and Jim Leonhard. If there’s a secondary better than the Eagles, it’s this one right here.

The purpose of this gameplan...
The purpose of the gameplan is not to come out passing but to create mismatches. IF the Jets try covering JLH and DHB with LBs, the Raiders can exploit those mismatches. If they come out playing the pass, then the Raiders are able to run the football in a more favorable situation than they have seen all season.
To this point, the Raiders have been a running football team, but their running game is like a hammer running into an anvil—the defense is sticking 8 and 9 men in the box on a play-to-play basis.
Running a 4 WR set gives a more favorable mismatch in either the running game or the passing game as the Raiders’ slot receivers could very well be matched up against LBs. If not, then run the ball with a spread out defense.

A little more to the plan
With the Raiders coming out with guys like DHB and JLH in the slots, the Raiders also have the ability to, as I stated in my first post, run quick slants and skinny posts. Run some curl routes with the slot guys, some quick ins and quick outs. We’re talking about quick passing plays that are intended to be high completion percentage passes—a West Coast-style offense.
Again, however, this is if the matchups favor passing. If not, have Bush and Fargas run it hard where Jenkins is supposed to be.

it'd be interesting to see, but I'd be afraid of taking out the extra TEs for protection.
Unless it consistently caused teams to change personnel, and increase dbacks and reduce lbs or rushing linemen, we can’t truly expect more completions to wideouts when pressure will rarely even need 3 seconds to make Jamarcus throw.

I can dig not wanting to use the high pick on him, especially considering no one was even talking about DHB in the top 10 or even 20 discussion. but this kid will be money. I’ve never been so sure about a guy, and I trust the Pat Kirwans, Mike Mayocks, Maddens, etc. These guys all blasted the Raiders for taking him too high, but they have nary a bad word to say about what this kid will be in the future, and they often cite his work ethic and plain desire to be the best in the game, and willingness to take the steps to get there.
