JaMarcus Russell

I'm surprised no one has created a fanpost about this article that was the Headliner on ESPN.com. Front page read "Backpedalling". I know their is a part of the Raider Nation that patiently supports him and then they're others who just have lost faith in his ability to be an NFL QB. I wanted SNBP's voice on Jamarcus. Read the article and watch the video accompanied within the article. Is Jamarcus worthy of "bust" label or is he a work in progress. I'd like to start the debate. One thing I do understand is that winning cures everything and if were winning, Jamarcus would never be in the negative spotlight but I don't want anyone giving excuses. So don't be afraid to speak your mind and give your opinion.

I'll start this off by saying

The team rides on his success. The Raiders organization and its fans have put a lot into him and he needs our support. With that said, i’d like to think the Raiders would play to win the game and not develop talent even if it means putting someone else under center.

Add another option

Who else do we have?

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"

by dubzfan on Oct 22, 2009 10:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

another option would be to blame the line... blame the call playing... blame an experienced group of WR's...

I think at this point in his career, he needs to develop faster and not fatter…

I'm not saying who else do we have at WR or line but as his backup

Bruce or Frye would be just as bad

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"

Be careful about that

they’re riding off the Philly game where he improved. This post is actually borderline troll because there has been MUCH MUCH MUCH debate bout Russell over the last few weeks. It’s hard to tell right now if he’s going to be a good QB. I’ve been critical of him, and he showed improvement @ the Eagles game. I’ll give him credit where credit is due, but if he continues to improve I’ll support him. The Raider Nation will not tolerate a sometimes QB.

With that said

I’m not sure where to vote here. I would say option C) see if he keeps the improvement up.

bottom line, it's way too early to fairly pass judgment on his performance

when the lack of the team’s performance that is necessary for a qb to have an equal chance is as large a problem as the Raiders’ has been over the years since Jamarcus started.

I remain critical of him for showing up out of shape. Can’t imagine how a guy blessed with the opportunity to play in this league shows up not the best they can be, or at least demonstrating they care to go to that next level. At least do some kind of cross training, you know? Kurt Warner has more stamina than JRock right now, and he’s old as hell.

That being said, the kid still has all the tools to be one of the best in the game, if the squad around him can produce at the elite NFL level. He’s young, and could still mature into a much harder worker than has been demonstrated thus far in his career. The team not only needs to be built around the guy, but the play calling needs to favor his strengths as well. I love to see they’re incorporating plays that have him getting the ball right out; teams are bringing quick heat and leaving check downs unchecked. This will work to his strengths.

It comes down to simple things to me:

He gets his head together and starts working like, say, Tom Brady. Lots of Raiders on this site probably hate how I jock Brady, but the dude consistently gives a clinic on what wins games. He outworks his opponents, plain and simple. He can take the mundane tasks of everyday and turn them into an art, and kick himself for his throwing arm not hitting his left hip pocket with velocity, and throwing off his front foot. His inactivity had him doing shit you never see from him. He’s also preparing for opponents with equal intensity. Everything is does is 200%, because he understands that how games are won. On the practice field.

Jamarcus shows only flashes of the willingness to put in that kind of effort, and without being the hardest working guy on the field—throw in that he’s among the youngest if not the youngest—and you have a recipe for an uphill battle in holding teammates accountable, the true difference in being a leader.

I look forward to seeing Jamarcus grow into this kind of guy, but agree that our success depends on him, and know that he’s riding the fence right now. Not bad, not good.I was surprised that even though votes are few, they’re majority in support of Jamarcus, but if you’d asked us all last week our answers would’ve been different, and it’s more about thanking the coaches, gameplans, Fargas, Murhpy, and the defense for doing they’re thing, and giving Jamarcus real chances.

Too early to pass judgment?

To jamarcus’s credit, he showed signs of progress last year closing the season out. But at this point in time, he is regressing statistically and it’s dissapointing. As far as having weight issues go, it’s hard not question his desire. I know he wants to be the best he can be, no question but his actions, his stats and his play leaves most with less to be desired.

some stability might help

It doesn’t help Russell at all going through another coaching change and learning another offensive playbook. I think Russell has showed some signs of being good but he doesn’t seem motivated enough to me to get better.

I’m a niners fan, but the raiders are my AFC team

I’m pretty sure that was our thing about smith he went through to many coaching changes and the one that hurt him the most was when Norv left to go to San Diego, and since then he’s had 2 shoulder surgeries (I think) and on his 4th OC since coming to the team.

I personally don’t think Russell’s a bust because he has proven that he can compete, the only question is whether or not he can compete at a high level regularly

9/10 support Jamarcus

It doesn’t seem that way at times though… I’d like to chart the unstable levels of support he has from the fans… At this point I think he has a better chance of throwing an INT then throwing a TD

no doubt

this site’s responses can be skewed at times, but the median outcome would level off over time. For all the supporters of Jamarcus on the site there are equally as many who have been over him for quite some time.

I guess by all means we can pass judgment on Jamarcus’ work ethic, especially if that is the reason for his regression in stats. But why I say it’s too early to judge is that play calling, lack of blocking, lack of run blocking and establishing a run game and executing play action how its supposed to be done, can absolutely hamper even the best qb’s ability to perform. Throughout all of it, Jamarcus has absorbed criticism with the best of them and still came out to play. He’s also managed the ball pretty well. A lot of the picks can be blamed on tip drills, and receivers not being where they should have been, contributing to his gun shyness and quickness to opt for punting. That is a skill you’d prefer was innate, which seems he’ll have to learn to harness and put to work. We need to release the reigns and see what he can do. We have yet to really see him play like he did in his best games in college. Running for at least three first downs too.

I can agree with

Fans and our wavering support. We cheer win we score and we boo when he turns the ball over. I also agree that Jamarcus should be given the opportunity to play to his ability afforded the same style of play as in college. Greg Papa brings a great point that Jamarcus is more then capable of playing in the gun instead of having to drop back and react. Whereas Tom Flores counters with, all great qb’s should be able to make plays. And like you said, that the raiders need to give him free reign! Can it happen? Yes… Will it happen? Is a different subject.

the coaches seem to realize this, and are willing to do what works for the guy

a great coach utilizes the strengths of his eleven best players for every play they choose those eleven.

it remains in question whether Al lets the coaches do their thing, therein giving the guy his best opportunities possible. We saw some of that with the quick passes to Gary Russel.

I wondered why we couldn’t adjust in the second half all those times when teams were bringing heat against Jamarcus like that. I thought several times if both backs chip blocked a guy each and hit the flats they’d have scored TD’s many of those times Jamarcus got hit within two seconds of the snap resulting in his fumbles and mishaps. If they’re getting pressure that quick, you’ve gotta adjust by taking advantage of the overpursuit. Marshall is more than capable, Al, let him do his thing, please!

Cable, Tollner, and Hackett are more than aware of Jamarcus’ skill set and where he makes his best plays, and are more than capable. Let them do their thing, PLEASE1

This is why I say it’s truly unfair to judge Jamarcus at this point, because the best of qbs would’ve had similar struggles if our team plays antiquated football, and the team has no respect for its coaches because they know they are puppets. Last week was just what we needed to vindicate what most Raiders fans know all too well.

Let me start off by saying!!!

I am a RAIDER FAN, and I support the team no matter what!!!

I really wish I could vote for JRock and say he is a work in progress, but there is no way I could sit here and tell you that in my heart I believe that foolishness and here’s why:

I don’t have an issue with his athletic ability. JRock could be one of the best raw talents that we ever saw at QB… it’s his work ethic!!! He does not prep for games, he seems to put the minimal amount of time in and it shows on the field.

He doesn’t own up to his mistakes… listen to his interviews, JRock doesn’t think he has a problem, he doesn’t even show a want to get better, he thinks it’s his receivers missing routes, the line not blocking, and so on… (Cmon JRock, Murph was wide open and you overthrew him by 20yds)

He’s not motivated! 70 Million Dollars and a guaranteed starting spot no matter how bad you do. There is nothing to worry about, show up fat, fumble 8 times, throw 6 picks, go sit down and put your hat on after yet another 3 and out (don’t bother looking at the printouts of what defense they just threw at you), and go home early if you want, lead the team to 5-11 or 4-12 or 2-4, the job is still yours JRock… Al Davis is the great enabler (Cable would bench JRock if it wouldn’t instantly cost him his job).

I know you all want to believe in him (I do too, and I hope he proves me wrong) but Nation you gotta call it like you see it. JRock is not a rookie, or a sophmore, and I don’t ask that he is a pro bowler, but dang it!!!! be a football player, don’t be the worst QB in the league but get paid one of the highest salaries. How long must we die with JRock each and every Sunday? If he would show just a little emotion, or leadership instead of looking uninterested I would ride with JRock, but he doesn’t, so I say SIT HIM, light a fire under him, cut his pay, if that doesn’t work oust him!!!

Or you can buy him yet even more jewelry to wear in an interview where he blames the team for the miscues! (He was borderline Mr. T last week man) YGBSM!!!!

off the soapbox…

Honesty is a the best policy… You sound like a guy that sits a couple seats next to me on Sundays (not at church btw) at the game! And I know there’s gotta be thousands more that feel the same!

Rocket Arm

To be honest I love JaMarcus Russell’s rocket arm. I can’t wait until he get some receivers he connects with. He works masterfully with Miller and it’s a shame he’s the only one he trust throwing to.

Ja Marcus Russell

Ok… While I must admit, I’m fed up with the inconsistent play of Ja Marcus Russell, this is not the time to pull the plug. Ja Marcus does have the talent to be very sucessful in the NFL. What Ja Marcus needs to do, is prepare harder, for the up-coming opponets.

You cannot be a superstar in this league, if you are not willing to put forth the work ethic as required at this level of play. Ok Ja Marcus you got the big contract, but I can assure you, that the riches go away fast, If you don’t produce… You must work for the prize. And Always remember Ja Marcus, there are many others who want what you have….

JR needs to read

the defenses quicker and make shorter higher percentage throws earlier to build confidence and open up the run which will open up the vertical game, the return of Chaz should help a lot.

The future is uncertain... and the end is always near. JMorrison

totally true

which is why he has a problem staring down receivers and being unable to look through progressions and find open guys. His panic level and happy feet increase with each covered guy, and he ultimately holds it to long or throws it where he shouldn’t or away prematurely.

Jamrcus Russel

I have know problems with Jrock, however I do have a prble whenso called espn nfl analysts says he sucks. Trent Dilfer sucked the only reason he one a superbowl is because his defense wonhim it, and Tim Hassleback the ony he’s remotely famus for is he’s fuckin some btch oin the view and he’s third in BC college’s td ist …with 15 he wasn’ even a back up he’s 3rd string. Until a a hall of fame qb says anything about J rock then I listen not to some petty so alled analysists
