Oakland Raiders Takes: The Weakness of This Offense

A surprisingly high number of my fellow citizens of Raider Nation apparently were too busy buying the hype of the mainstream media today to actually watch the game.

That’s right, the same sinister mainstream media whose intelligence we all revel in assaulting.

Screams, shouts, and CAPITOLIZED captions professing cures to the Oakland Raiders are everywhere.

Bench Jamarcus Russell!  Start Gradkowski, sign Garcia, draft a QB, put Ted Williams frozen head on Russell’s body!

Listen up nation- there is not a man, women, child, alien, superhero, or Chuck Norris and Tim Tebow love child that could successfully QB this team.

Star-divide

To everyone who, after today’s performance decided the most pertinent thing to complain about was Jamarcus Russell, and everyone who expressing that the first thing this team needs to do is repair the QB position I have one thing to say: learn the game of football.

I do not say this because I am sold Russell is the future.  I say this because against the Texans, the running backs were almost as bad as the receivers, who were almost as terrible as the offensive line.

There was not a run attempt that started with even the tease of hope that the back might get forward momentum going.

I do not remember ever watching a game where there were more drops than the Raiders had against the Texans.

And these were not the most disturbing features of the offensive performance.  It was the offensive line.

The Texans had one sack all season long to go with the worst rush defense in the entire NFL, yet the Raiders offensive line allowed the Texans to make them their bitch.

Slapped, beat, and then whored out for the Texans amusement and boost of ego, the offensive line destroyed any possible chance of offensive success the Raiders had.

A common refrain from the chorus of chants calling for the replacement of Russell is that this is a quarterback driven league.

Well my friends, the quarterback of this team today was driving a Ford Pinto that had to be push started.

I will put my stock in two other football adages that have been proven to be true time and time again: defense wins championships and football games are won in the trenches.

This team needs to get better on the offensive line.

Any focus of improvement of this football team needs to start there.  It was their most glaring weakness today and also it is the unit with the least potential for improvement.

The receivers are young and have been without their budding number one- hopes that they will get better are not unfounded.

The running backs would succeed with even a moderately decent offensive line.

Russell has played horrible, but given what he had to work with, he was the Raiders best offensive player against the Texans.  While he has not sold anyone on the fact that he is the future, there are at least glimmers of hope.

The QB debate is not going to matter in the slightest, however, until the offensive line gets better.  Mario Henderson and Robert Gallery look like keepers but until the other three line positions are upgraded this offense is not going anywhere.

Attempts to upgrade this unit, which is supposed to be Tom Cable’s specialty, fell incredibly short.

Trade acquisition and supposed answer at center Samson Satele is so horrible that, the depressingly bad, Chris Morris is starting in his place.

Also, key free agent pickup Kahlif Barnes is either so stupid or lazy or both that he will not learn to play the right side of the line (maybe, like Derek Zoolander, he is just not an ambi-turner).

This is the one unit on the team that inspires zero hope in the future.  Until this problem is alleviated I could care less about one more chant of personnel concern focused anywhere else.

We need to definitely work on the o-line

those guys seem willing to learn.

But with Russell it takes 2 to tango. They can teach him all they want, but he has to be willing to work at it. He stated he’s happy w/ his progress, so I don’t know.

From an outside perspective, looking at the Raiders..

I think it is fairly obvious that Russell is not ready to start right now.

The Raiders HAVE to get a veteran QB in there to run the show for a year or two and let Russell learn how it is done.

They also need to evaluate the system and be 100% comfortable that Russell is a good fit for it. If not, they need to tweak the system for his playstyle or consider the alternatives.

You guys have the weapons on offense. You are a decent quarterback away fromm being a competitve team.

And as a football fan in general, there are three franchises that should ALWAYS be good. Steelers, Packers and Raiders.

Those are marquis NFL franchises and it is good for the WHOLE league when they are doing well.

The O line and RB’s were terrible because Houston stacked the line daring J-Marc to beat them

They knew Oakland couldn’t pass the ball effectively

The QB is not the only problem but he is the biggest problem

JR does have a strong arm.

And Al wants fast recievers, whats the point, if you never take any shots down the field.

is THE number 1 pressing needs that the raiders need, to be perfectly honest both the D and the O-line needs upgrading.

I agree

hard to label JR a bust, when he doesn’t have a decent line to play behind.

It all starts with the line

This article is 100% correct. Russel will not succeed without an O-line that can protect him and open up some holes for the RB’s. Gallery and Henderson are the only ones worth starting and and Gallery’s probably out for the season. I’m definitely not saying Russell is the answer at QB just that unless the play on the line improves he can’t even be evaluated fairly. You simply can’t run or pass without an O-line that can do it’s job.

Leadership

Plain and simple, JaMarcus can’t lead this team!
QB is the most important leadership position on the field.
JaMarcus is not a leader. Give someone else a chance.
What do we have to lose? Another game! Give this team a change at QB and a new attitude, I know they can win, just not with JaMarcus Russell.

by Easternraider on Oct 5, 2009 8:57 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

when the entire offense fields an attempt like that one

you’ve gotta look at the whole picture. 9 drops, horrible protection, horrible run blocking, and no instincts from any of the running backs, although it’s arguable Fargas outplayed McFadden and Bush.

But most times the o line was losing at the point of attack, and multiple Texans were in the backfield.

The calls again are bs, too. Just once it would be nice too see a ball bounce our way, or a call go for us. What difference does it make when you can’t move the ball at all with any consistency. The defense that was supposed to be among the worst in the league looked like the Ravens.

Defense looks solid, but what happened to special teams coverage? We just continue to fall to pieces. I’m with Texansforever. The Raiders are supposed to be an elite in this league. We all know how long it’s been since we could say that.

There are too many problems to point the finger at any one player, or even groups of players like the line. The coaching, play calling, lack of execution, lack of taking care of individual jobs. It’s as bad as it’s ever been. Gonna be a long season, and this Raider team could recapture the worst team in the league status. Us or the Chiefs. Pathetic.

by brhynno on Oct 5, 2009 9:38 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

guess this is raider football

everyone balmes the QB for a team’s failures, but until Al Davis leaves the front office, don’t expect things to change. Davis sticks to his old ways, and unlike other owners, doesn’t change. The O-line needs help, the team needs some veteran wideouts, and they need defensive players who can stop the run game and make tackles. But with all this Russell needs to work on his accuracy and decision-making, but with Cable probably going to jail, i don’t see him getting better anytime soon. Here’s hoping something can change real soon or its gonna be another long season.

by Kazeryu Ray on Oct 5, 2009 10:16 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You were you just bored when you wrote this?

Clearly JR is not a decent QB, so to bash people for wanting a change is irrational. Some of his worst passes is when he is not being pressured at all. You can spew as many adages as you want, but if the defense is on the field all day I don’t care how good your defense is they are not going to win. Gradkowski got a chance to play a portion of a series this season and looked much better than JR did to that point. I think a lot of people look at JR’s attitude and the fact is he laughing it up on the sidelines while his team is being pummeled. Where is his competitive spirit? Oh that’s right, it was gone as soon as they guaranteed the lazy bastard so much money.

by SuperRevs on Oct 5, 2009 10:20 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

agree about the money thing

it’s as if he could give a shit what happens, he’s getting paid, and paid big. It’s as if he knows he won’t get sat down too. But the o line was far worse than JR in this game, anyway. Not sure Tom fucking Brady could’ve done any better with the lack of blocking and amount of dropped balls, often for first downs.

You’d at least know Tom would be fired up about getting the ball back and trying to light a fire under the offense. He’d be in the faces of every blocker missing assignments, after every receiver for not being where they should, and for not catching balls they should have.
I agree wanting a change is rational. Believing Gradkowski could have done much better, if you watched the horrible display of attempts at creating a pocket or dominating the line of scrimmage, not so much. I’m all for giving someone else a shot, however. Benching JR should have been a right we not only reserve at all times, but exercise when necessary.

by brhynno on Oct 5, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Your exactly right

BUT……. Tom can do that because he knows and understands what and where the guys around him are supposed to be doing.

This all falls back on the lack of give-a-shit JR has, and from what I see it’s very little.

by Black and Silver Express on Oct 5, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My point is...

It doesn’t matter who the QB is when the line plays like this. Any success at the QB position or on the scoreboard will not come until the o-line play improves.

by raidernation68 on Oct 6, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow!

Learn the game of football? We were successful in the first game running the ball because San Diego prepared for what they thought would be a better pass team, but when they realize all we had was run game, they adjusted to the run and forced Russell to pass the ball. We lost that game. Since then the last three teams have focused on the run forcing the ball into Russell’s hands. Russell in not consistent with the ball. He over throw the receivers and hold on to the ball way to long instead of dumping the ball off. The raiders are three downs and out leaving their defense on the field. I m tired of everybody making excuses for Russell. the raiders have given him what he needed and he has failed to rise to the occasion.

by ikeman40 on Oct 5, 2009 11:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I voted QB...

but the O-line is equally as bad. The only Reason I marked QB (beyond the fact that he is the worst in the NFL, CFL, and UFL) is because if he could complete some passes down field more frequently then it would take pressure off the O-line.

The O-line is just terrible though. Everyone to the right of Gallery needs to go or be a backup only.

Let's review some facts here.

It’s not unfair to blame Russell’s performance at the QB position for the poor overall play of the offense. Why? When teams know that you can’t throw they stack the box against the run and you then cannot do that against them,no matter how good or bad your O line or runningbacks are. As for all the “Well look at all the rookie receivers he has,and wait till Chaz gets back” people I offer this. Schillens is supposed to be one of JR’s favorite targets. Last year he played in 16 games and had a whopping 15 catches, look it up. He looked great in tha Dallas game then got hurt. This year his favorite target from last year (Miller) is seldom thrown to. Yes, defenses are probobly keying on him. Murphy doesn’t look that bad to me. Yeah, some dropped balls but he looks like a blue chipper this year and beyond. Poorly run routes and dropped balls don’t help your QB but overthrown screen passes and out routes don’t help his receivers. You can’t look the ball to your receiver and expect it to be a completion in the big boy league. So how does JR’s play affect the Offensive and Defensive lines you ask?
I believe his terrible play at the QB position, and Managements refusal to even try another solution (even late in the last minutes of the last two blowouts) has created a “cancer” that has now spread to the rest of the Team. You are down 17 points in the 3rd quarter withh 7 minutes to go. You just left the field after another 3 and out and the guy that led you to it is going to be the guy that leads you to the same thing on the next series. How frustrating must that be? How hard would you block or run knowing nothing was going to change? Or the Defense going out on the field once again with minimal rest, how hard can you play even if you wanted to? There is another Raider article today that comments on the fact that pro QB’s don’t play like this for long before they get benched. Every other player on the team knows this , it’s the way things are done from pop warner to the pros. Why is Russell different? Why should they be asked to sacrafice winning at the expense of him getting a chance to mature and each week he regresses? No, in my book it all starts at the QB position on this years team and it looks like we will never know what difference the backups would have made because they won’t get the chance. If they do it will be some impossible situation that nobody could prosper in ,say, the 4th quarter of the Giants game , and all the JR followers will I told you so the rest of the Nation. Gradkowski and Frye the answers? No,but just making a statement to Raider Nation and showing a willingness to TRY just might be.

by Wyoraider on Oct 5, 2009 1:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

with you all the way. it's what you do when a guy consistently makes the same mistakes, or doesn't improvise to overcome a weakness

you bench him. Flat out. Regardless of who’s is behind him, regardless of worrying about slowing his development. How does throwing him to the wolved when teams don’t respect his ability to hit open guys (rightfully so), and teams stack the box therein taking away any run threat too?

Mixing it up couldn’t hurt. But don’t expect any of those backups to win games, either. Beginning to wonder if Dan Marino could throw on this offense.

by brhynno on Oct 5, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It all falls on the QB?

Then the Raiders are doomed this season, because they’ve got nobody worth playing, and there isn’t anybody out there who can help them either. Even if Garcia wasn’t finished as a football player, he doesn’t want to be here. Therefore, unless they figure out a way to get the running game going, and take the pressure off whoever is at QB, they’re done. This season is effectively over.

And yet, on the Bucs, who also have lousy QBs, Cadillac Williams is able to put up respectable numbers running the ball. Likewise at Tennessee where, Kerry Collins is stinkin up the joint, and yet Chris Johnson is putting up solid rushing numbers. Go look for yourself. Don’t take my word for it.

No, it’s time we got rid of this excuse for the running backs/run blocking. The entire Raiders offense is failing. Make no mistake about it.

Oh yeah, and once again DMC is injured.

by rightnasty on Oct 5, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

not at all. we've all been saying we wonder if Joe Montana could play in this offense

But the things we need to see from Jamarcus may never come. We’re saying if the same things were occurring for any other qb in the league, they’d be promplty benched, and given time to think about what they needed to do to fix it. I’ll give you that Jamarcus probably played better than any of the offense this time, but it was still dismal, and he still seems to lack the ability to be a field general and inspire guys to believe in him.

by brhynno on Oct 5, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, Russell should be benched

But it’s not going to make a difference. If Grad comes in, it’ll be a marginal improvement if any. Sure, someone can say he deserves his chance. But I’d hate for people to be thinking that he’s going to come in and turn the season around. We’re all hoping this season can be salvaged, but after this next 4 game stretch, we may well have notion removed forcibly. I don’t want to be the doomsayer here, but I’m not seeing any light at the end of the tunnel regardless of what the Raiders do.

The ironic thing is if Bush is getting the ball more, the running game actually could improve, but that could make it look like DMC was wasted draft pick.

It's good to see another clueless Raider fan blogging online.

LOL; Classic Russell apologist; you wait for the rest of the team to suck in a game then you say, Ah see it’s not Russells fault.

Well what about the other games when he had all day to throw and still couldn’t hit anyone.

Are you kidding me? Even the announcers yesterday said the obvious. Russell flat out cant’ hit anyone on the numbers or in stride. Even the dropped passes weren’t exactly easy catches.

I’m so sick of Raider fans blindly backing players like Buchanon, Gallery (and’ dont tell me he’s good; no guard would ever be picked #2 overall), Gibson, Washington, Harris, the list goes on and on.

Russell is lazy; players say it, writers who follow the team say it, and ex players say it.

Marino and Steve Young said it best. You cant’ teach accuracy.

I guess Flacco, Matt Ryan, Sanchez, Stafford and many other young QB’s doing well didn’t get the memo that in the 3rd year the only thing good to say about you is that everyone sucks and it’s not your fault.

Russell is #1 overall; save the excuses.

Russell is a huge bust; Bey will be an even bigger one. The first 3 weeks Russell was a joke; he gets some dropped passes and now dont blame him.

Russell, Heyward Bey, and others keep saying how well the’ve played. Are you kidding me?

Sanchez and Stafford at times are running for their lives. You mean to tell me the Lions are good? The Falcons stunk and Ryan helped lead them to the playoffs.

25-75; 1-18 at home against AFC West opponents; Russell, Heyward-Bey, and the rest of the team suck. End of story. There are about 10 guys that should be on this team and then the others should be dumped.

No LB’s, 3 good DL; and no, Kelly’s one good game a year doesnt’ count; Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Without Ron Wolf running the drafts, they are the worst drafting team in the nfl for almost 2 decades.

by jpm4444 on Oct 5, 2009 2:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll agree with you about Ron Wolf, and on most guys who are busts. Jamarcus keeps proving critics right

Don’t agree about Heyward-Bey. All of the offenses’ problems are compounded by JR, and if you could read, you’d find that most of us are in favor of benching Jamarcus, we just don’t expect anyone else to step in and be good given the myriad of problems we have on the offensive side.

Most Raider fans aren’t even aware of Wolf and what he’s done. Don’t confuse fanhood and optimism for what we believe is actually a good qb, or one who deserves to be starting on any NFL team.

If you have been reading you’d know that we curse our drafts as well. I’m not even hating on the players as much as you, and only time would tell, but that’s often missed because these very same player might very well be successful on teams that allowed coaches to implement modern offenses that work, and use WR’s to their strengths, and draft OL with picks when they should and jettison the wrong players when they are wrong.

The comparisons at this point to Sanchez, Ryan, Flacco are moot. Differences remain with Al’s intereference and the lack of consistent addressing of needs on both sides of the ball in drafts. This is Detroit’s first year sans Millen, and they may right the ship after all. No question Stafford shows more ability to be a field general and more importantly to get players to believe in him.

No fan on this site will argue Jamarcus has or will ever have these qualities. Hopeful that it might happen? Perhaps.

Will Heyward-Bey survive the tailspin this team will continue on without Wolf saving us from Al, and Al’s insistence on his being right about Jamarcus, and continuing to try to build the team around him? Maybe not, But he will be a viable receiver in this league.

We know we’re the worst drafting team in the league, and it’s questionable if even Wolf could help us at this point. But don’t hate us for misguided loyalty—especially when we’re well aware of our failures to address the real needs on the team. As for the guys, we’ll continue to back them and hope for better days, even though we know Al will make it an uphill battle for any of them to succeed.

jpm...

The point was to not apologize for Russell, but to point out that success is not going to come until the problems at offensive line are addressed and to keep blaming Russell is to lose sight of bigger problems facing this team… Placing the problems of a team on the QB is not the way to build a winner… But I couldn’t expect everyone to read or comprehend more than just the title.

Finally a citizen of the Nation with a clue!!!!

You are so correct!!! Dude the offensive line has one bad game and now you want to place the blame on them!!! WTFO?

Keep in mind the O line has sustained a couple of injuries, and keep in mind that for the 1st few games J Rock had the time that he needed (i.e. all day) and he could not put the ball on open receivers. Also holes were being opened for the RBs and they were hitting them, until teams figured out J Rock couldn’t throw and then put all 9 defenders in the box, and sent run blitzes every play… Don’t be a fool, Adrian Peterson or Barry Sanders in his prime couldn’t run the ball against the fronts the Raiders see.

Its hard to ask an Oline to effectively block a defense that out numbers them at the point of attack…

Also how do we even know that the Oline even wants to play for JRock? How do we know if they are tired of watching this dude show up to work with a care free attitude and slack off at the expense of the rest of the team? What if they have lost all confidence in him. Leaders are dudes that you wanna fight for, put it all out on the line for, and JROCK IS NOT THAT DUDE! He is however getting paid as if he is one of the top tier QBs in the league, and he’s got the job security of one of the top tier QBs in the league, why does he need to improve? whats the incentive?

BOTTOMLINE: JR is our #1 problem, he is well below average, our Oline (Healthy even with green) is slightly above average at this point… How many more Olineman can u draft? Wake up dude!!!

by Oaktizzle on Oct 6, 2009 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The run game has 250 yards since the first half of the Chargers game.

Also, the Chargers D has been getting run over anyway. The O-line has been steadily declining in their ability to pass protect.

Any running back can have success against a stacked box with a strong offensive line. Shawn Alexander faced stacked boxes and had record breaking seasons and he falls over when someone looks at him.

Look at the examples you gave, Peterson and Sanders, they frequently faced stacked boxes, but they also had solid run blocking lines.

Do you think Peterson’s success last year was due to T. Jackson taking the pressure off of him.

Again, I am not saying that Russell is the long term answer- I am saying that until this offensive line improves don’t worry about QB. The Raiders need to take care of the O-line first and foremost.

If you think Morris, Carlisle, and Green can make 3/5 of an above average offensive line I would urge you to rate those players with same postion players from every other NFL team.

Also, the Raiders have not had O-lineman heavy drafts. I think they could and should draft more o-lineman.

Out of 77 picks this decade only 8 have been on O-lineman and Gallery is the only o-lineman picked in either the first or second round during that span.

Not one lineman was selected in the last two drafts.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

and even Gallery hasn't lived up to second overall pick potential

but I’ll wait until he has a decent other three guys besides Mario to pass any real judgment.

A lot of splitting hairs here. Hopefully it was just a really bad day, and not a total indicator of what we’re to expect all season long. It was a combination of lackluster play by all eleven guys on offense at some point, compounded by horrible play calling, and the reappearance of the ineptitude on offense that makes stacking nine possible.

I think we all know the answer to this. expect a heavy dose of Jacobs and Bradshaw. Rankin got picked up by Seattle I think, and not sure if Russel is available either.

What about the holes on the line (not including the guys who are starters that can be considered holes) with Green and Gallery out? Tuck, Osi, Kiwanuka, Robbins will be in our face far worse than Houston was, and their offense is top ten in production, top 5 in points scored; even without Eli, it will be a long game.

Love to see the transformation Singletary has made with San Francisco

We’d need a guy like him, like Flores or Madden (know it’s not possible, but speaking hypothetically), who could get guys playing responsibly and could override Al’s interference at least part of the time.

As for a QB, if it were a situation like the 49ers, a guy like Shaun Hill could suffice; someone who can just get it done. But they need to address O lie deficiencies too, and get more production from their run game as well. But look at the difference in outcomes. They are fielding a competitive team, and the only one in the league with 3 wins against divisional rivals.

It sucks to be a Raider fan these days, but I’ll be damned if we don’t remain the most loyal in the league. Apparently, blindly loyal!

Some fans just don’t seem to get it, and I say that after reading a comment about getting a veteran QB and let JR sit and learn for a year or two…A year or two? Since when does it take 5 years to develop into an NFL QB? 5 years into a QB’s carrer and they are either in their prime, mediocre,back-ups, or GONE!!!! I don’t which team it is or if their O-Line is playing bad or rookie WRs, if your QB has an average rating of 30.7 over 4 games and his completion pecentage is in the low 40’s hhe is going to get benched if not cut, so why do we still have people making excuses one right after another? How can an O-Line play good when they have to block 8 or 9 guys every down because teams know you can’t throw to save your life? JR is a BUST and he needs not only to be benched but gone because if a 3rd year guy is putting up numbers like that he is never and I repeat, NEVER, going to be an NFL QB and all the coaches are doing is watching this horrible play go on and on. It’s like having a deep cut on your leg or arm that won’t stop bleeding but you refuse to bandage it because you hope it will stop on its own.

and were generating QB pressure with just their lineman

Exactly

There isn’t nearly enough talk of the offensive line going on in what apparently is supposed to be serious analysis here. When the last time the Raiders had a solid offensive line? Last decade? Because by the fact that neither the passing game nor the running is working, it all points to them. And you’d think a team formerly coached by John Madden would understand the importance of what goes on in the trenches, but somewhere Al has forgotten or chose to disregard what Madden knew.

by rightnasty on Oct 5, 2009 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're probably right

However, in the old days, a QB was expected to sit for 5 years before he got a start. Now granted these days, nobody has that patience and rookies are being thrown out there, often before they’re ready. Probably, Russell will not be developing into anything impressive anytime soon. However, he joins a list of QBs like Leinert, Young, etc. who were probably started too soon, not given a chance to learn the system, and likely not coached on how to be an NFL quarterback the right way.

People expect a rookie QB to come out and play as well as Ryan did his first season, but really that’s unrealistic. Only a handful of them will be able to do it.

by rightnasty on Oct 5, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok fellas, this is the deal..J-Russ is just not ready yet, however, it doesn't mean

he won’t be ready in the future. You just can’t learn to play that position in this league in the line of fire. Look as much as Al and Tom want this kid to start, he’s just not ready. You don’t win games in this league running a base offense, won’t happen and J-Russ is having problems running that. He needs to sit at number 3 until he is ready, our backups will win games for us because they are further along fundamentally, now neither are Peyton Manning but they are good enough to run the entire playbook and we have the talent to win. However, all the talent in the world won’t win if you cannot use all of your weapons properly and that includes the ability to execute everything in the play book. If they don’t bench J-Russ and work with him until he understands the complete playbook, can read through his progressions without locking on one receiver and can use his true abilities they will ruin his career. This is a fact. Now I appreciate all you fans perspective, but this is the truth. Play either Frye or Grad, doesn’t matter they’re the same to me, neither great but able, and we will win games period, because we have a talented team. But we will NOT win with J-Russ period because he is NOT ready yet…Yes guys dropped passes blah, blah, blah, let me tell all of you something, when your offense is clicking and scoring big plays, the defense is pumped..but its hard when you come out the game and 3 plays later youre back on the field…The O will make the D better, I guarantee it…Now is the time to sit J-Russ for the rest of the season and he needs to have the attitude that he will fight to be ready. If he doesn’t do that, he will never be ready to play in the league. And it is money wasted, straight up.

Rodney from sac town and mikes d are right.

Give him one quarter in the Giants game and if he falters bench his a$$. I do agree that he should start the following week at #2 on the depth chart, no lower. As for the Cable situation we are really screwed if he is suspended or goes to jail. For those of you who live the fantasy that Cable actually calls his own shots on this team, here is the way it really works. Mr. Davis calls the shots ,period. That’s the problem. I believe that Cable can sway opinion on SOME things, but very few. An interim Coach would be Mr. Davis’s hand picked stooge and a total disaster. And YES, the QB situation is totally out of control, and there is no offensive hope for our team this year. Bruce and Charlie are NOT the answers now or ever. They would merely represent a willingness to try something different to show your fans you are at least interested in trying to win. It’s just f ’in ugly Nation.

by Wyoraider on Oct 6, 2009 2:16 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Disaster?

And what is it we have now? It could get worse than this? How? Cable needs to be fired. Flores, Madden, all were able to work with Al and get a Super Bowl. Cable doesn’t know shit about being a head coach. Are we not ready to admit that yet? That he’s not qualified, that he should have stayed an assistant until he was ready. That being a yes man is not good enough reason to be made head coach.

Any other team in the league, performing like this, come end of the season, the entire coaching staff would probably be fired along with the general manager.

Yeah, we’d all like to win, but it’s not going to happen, and we all know that too. What’s more, at this point, the more games they lose, the better the draft picks next year. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll work on the offensive line this time and get somebody like McCoy. And just maybe they’ll get it right next year. This season is a wash. There’s no turning it around at this point, and does it really make a difference whether they win 4 games or 2, because it’s certainly not going to be more than that. I know, sounds defeatist, but let’s be realistic.

Russell

It’s sad but from what the reports are…Russell is overwhelmed intellectually. Doesn’t mean he has potential, but big money brings on big responsibility and the ability to comprehend the situation. He mediocre at best and Al davis threw his money at the wrong QB. Sure the entire team is a shambles, but ypou cannot keep apologizing for a player of limited abilities. Gradkowski should start for a few games, even bring in Frye. The season is about restructuring the positional weaknesses and the organization needs to find a GM who is on-board with the 2009-era player and coaches.

mikesd1981 and Wyoraider I do understand what you are saying but J-Russ isn't

ready to be a number 2, remember number 2 is ready to be number 1, and it is clear he is just not ready. He needs to sit until he is really ready to start and he is not even a number two right now. He is a number 3 based upon his skill set right now. The Raiders will win games with either backup QB, We have talent, just no execution at QB…

by Rodney Sacramento on Oct 6, 2009 9:22 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree Rodney

But I don’t think Mr.Davis would put him at 3 on the depth chart. Hell, he won’t even TRY another QB in the waning minutes of a blowout! I’ll always be a Raider fan but this years deal is almost too much. I felt confident that the team was on the right track when I saw players like Garcia and Neal brought in to provide examples with veteran leadership, and in Garcia’s case , to push Russell a little. Well, when he started to push Management comes out with “It’s JaMarcus’s job ,period”! And now the guy is playing like it, No matter what he does he’s not going anywhere and he knows it. Perhaps if he paid as much attention to the playbook as he does his stupid “Mowhawk” (I mean REALLY,people) hairdo he would learn a thing or two. He might not even be a number 3 if you look at it. And to the guy who earlier above mentioned Flacco,Ryan,Stafford,Sanchez etc. You are right. Young,in some cases underclassmen that are coming in and at least doing something. Do the lions have a better O line than us,or are we at least even in talent there? See what I’m saying? Stafford comes to the WORST team in the NFL and his QB rating Dwarfs Russells.

by Wyoraider on Oct 6, 2009 10:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Same ol bs here in Raider nation. I think both sides are correct, J Russell needs to jump HUGE strides to even be considered a decent QB in the NFL. What has been our strength for the past 2 yrs is now right with the rest of the team and thats the O-Line. I think with the staff havingt to spend so much time TRYING to develope J Russell in the off-season they just figured that they would come out and run the ball, well what you did last yr isn’t the same ish as what IS happening this yr. Another words they have to work on it in order to run the ball. That being said even in the 1st 2 gms when the o line DID give J Russell time he missed the open rec by yds. Not inches but Yds!!!! He is terrible. Made it his whole life on Natural ability and never thought he would have to work on it. Well now he is in the NFL where everyone has talent. It is the hard work that seperates the boyz from the men,and J Russell is a boy with a mans body out there. I just don’t understand how the team goes from bad to worse to THE WORST!!! Its just like our country was a yr ago. F’d up from the top down, all the way to the water boy!!! Its not going to get any better until someone gets Mr. Burns, aka Fidel Castro, aka Al Davis out of there. He is single handedly destroyin this team and organization with his lack of picks, ability to get the f out of the 60’s and 70’s and having to have his hand all the way up everyones a—es in the organization, Until he dies or wakes the F up the raider nation will be just where we are. Hey we might even be the new lions here shortly! Can’t wait! I am almost ashamed to admit I am a fan now. And I have NEVER in my life denied anything I am especailly a raider fan. Now I look down saying it because there is no signs of hope!

PLAYCALLING>>>what a joke

Learn the game of football…lol… Look …first of all russell is playing horrible… Now theres reports hes missing meetings and it seems he has no idea of how to be a PROFESSIONAL QB in this league..somebodys gottta get through to this kid and get him together so he can be the great QB he was drafted to be… Say what u want about the running game and o-line but does anyone ever mention the playcalling? As far as i know we still have no O.C and Cable is calling the plays…WTF??? i can call a better game if i was drunk,, what the hell is wrong with this guy? Tell me this… was there anyone that didnt know we would run the ball to try and get out of the endzone and avoid a safety? If u watch that play u can see the linebackers just attack almost even before the ball was snapped coz they knew what was coming also… and then throughout the game our running game is failing and he still continues to try and run the ball on first and second down almost every time….result of that = 3rd and long.. good job.. put your struggling qb in a tough spot….way to go coach….and ill give russell credit coz a couple times he actually converts these long 3rd downs….which makes u wonder this…. we can convert on 3rd down or sumtimes 4th when we absolutely have to and the defense knows a pass is coming… then why not just come out slinging it on first and second more often…stop being so one dimensional…mix it up more is all im saying…. i think cable is one of those coaches that scripts his plays and its seems he doesnt change them no matter what the situation… And i know what your thinking.. thats not what we do ,it wont work, we dont have the receivers, or the qb.. i say we do… just have to be more creative…spread it out more…get walker in there….. do 4 receiver sets and even five…..open up the passing game more…let russell go out there and sling it and show everyone his cannon arm… we can do it… just have to be creative and not so predictible…of course we’d all like to be able to run the ball at will and with success all day every sunday but thats not how the league is anymore….the league is pass happy and qb friendly…. …let our running game be a compliment to our great passing game….cable needs to put his ego aside and stop trying be like “this is who we are and we’re gonna run it on you no matter what … try and stop us”… coz news flash…. they r stopping us… the word is out…we r one dimensional….. even my gf can tell just by the personnel and the formation when we r running it….football is not only physical its mental….and that goes for the coaches too…gotta coach a better game….outsmart ur opponent and let ur players outplay theirs….but u gotta put them in position to succeed… THATS COACHING!!!

but who is gonna come here and put up with this nonsence? Cable actually WANTED this job, which causes me to question his sanity. As long as Davis has control of this franchise, we will continue to see what we saw against Denver and Houston, which is SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL. I am starting to think that the Detroit Lions will have a winning season before the Raiders…agree or disagree?

by raidernation68 on Oct 7, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well i’ve seen russell damn near throw the ball through his receviers… sure he misses on almost all of his touch passes but that can improve….so do lots of crosses and slants

by bigjon22 on Oct 6, 2009 6:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

But..........

it’s not improving is it? You’d think he would have at least worked on the finesse. But then again, he said he was happy with his progress, so take that how you want.

What’s happening now w/ the play calling and you can see it in the play calling is Cable is losing trust in Russell so he’s trying to play safe w/ running plays, and I bet if Davis wasn’t there Russell would be sitting down right now.

But on the other hand, Cable said he counted, what, 8 dropped passes this game? Now I know at least one of those was practically in the dirt to DHB, but still.

That aside, are we really going to feel better when Gradkowski comes in and is most likely throwing just as bad? I hope everybody who’s getting their hopes up about Grad has at least looked at:

Bench russell and play Gradkowski or Charlie Frye

It really makes me sick to my stomach watching this football team make the same mistakes over and over. Every draft we waste our picks on skilled position players, when we really know that we need linemen and an experienced quarterback. One of DeMarcus rustles main problem is he holds the football too long, which indicates his lack ability to read the defense in front of him

A lot of people might get upset with Jeff Garcia’s comments to me he’s right on track about Russell’s lack of preparation and poor mechanics. With that said it’s time to go with the backup, we need to shake things up around the silver and black. I saw some positive things from the backup quarterback when Russell was sidelined for brief moment with an ankle ,Gradkowski I thought really looks sharp balls were on target. Tom Cable need to reopen the job at the quarterback position, and Mr. Davis needs to except he made the decision regarding Russell and cut his financial losses.

We can turn this thing around, but it starts with the quarterback position. Let’s get Jeff Garcia back on this team.

by meninblack2002 on Oct 6, 2009 7:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Did anyone notice?

Now, I do not claim to be a football genius by any means. But did anyone notice that when JR threw from the shotgun, he tended to be much more accurate. I do believe he was 6 of 7 from the shotgun. Also, when he was at LSU, I think they ran alot of shotgun. In my opinion, if some one is struggling with mechanics, just like JR, than maybe we should move him to a set that doesn’t require a three, five, or seven set drop. The shotgun allows a quarterback to have greater vision with less emphasis on mechanics and more emphasis on arm strength and movement outside of a standard pocket. (Not Mike Vick movement, but small lateral movements).

Regardless, not much is going to change until there is no more Al, and OC is hired with a playbook from this decade, and a general manager, under the age of our current one (Al Davis for those who don’t know) is hired to oversee football operations.

Until then, I will be a loyal Raider fan.

I hate the 40winers!!

Something worth thinking about...

If you take a look at Matt Cassel in KC compared to his performance as a Patriot you might be seeing what the author of the article is talking about. JR might be a dud but this line doesn’t give him the best proving ground. Bring in another QB and watch him get injured in 2-3 games just to see JR come back in… something needs to happen in various areas, a new QB (probably) isn’t going to change things overnight.

by 98Bones on Oct 6, 2009 8:42 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I noticed

thats exactly what im talking about… more pass friendly… shotgun 4 wide… spread em out… he makes almost all the low trajectory high velocity throws on the money… which means he can throw slants, drags, curls, outs, ins and even certain posts, he just has trouble with his fades and go routes, when he has to get a lot of air under it.. but that can and should improve . As for cable again.. i dont think its his lack of trust in russell i think its his lack of experience as a play caller and also his ego. oh yeah…and his playbook sucks… too predictible

by bigjon22 on Oct 6, 2009 9:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

ONE MORE THING!

can everyone stop making excuses for the defense. not just ours but everybodys…I am sooooo sick of hearing over and over again that the defense is tired…“offense cant do nothing and the defense is tired from being on the field so long”…. cant never rest….give me a fokn break!!!!!!… correct me if im wrong but every second the D is out there the other teams offense is still on the field… correct? so they sure arent having any fatigue probs and continue to put up points on the bored but ppl complain the d is tired and couldnt stop em..gimme a break

by bigjon22 on Oct 6, 2009 10:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

When the other teams offense

can sustain drives down field and stay on the field for 10 minutes the D has time to rest and get their breath back.

When Russell and company go 3 and out in 3 plays in 3 minutes, the Defense barely had a chance to sit down on the bench and wipe the sweat from their heads.

Wyoraider, Oaktizzle and the rest of you that speak as if you have a clue about

football, two things, 1. The problem is NOT the Oakland Raiders, it is the fact we have a staff and owner that are being political and not realistic. I have said it, J-Russ is not ready, and if he has a spot on this roster today it should be at number 3 and if we had 5 QB’s he should be a number 5. 2. Don’t blame play calling..lol Hell, what do you expect when the QB only understands 1 out of every 15 pages of play book. They can’t call but 6 plays because that is all this kid can run, so to speak.

The Raiders have speed, talent, & they lack a leader. J-Russ played for Coach Fischer in College, and he ran an offense close enough to a pro-set this kid should be far better. He’s lazy..and now he’s paying for. And so the story goes.

PREPARE for a big time losing season…There is no hope with this kid at the helm right now, he is not ready and CANNOT get ready under fire. Jamie Dukes tweeted me and said “J-Russ needs to want it more”. Meaning in the offseason where the real work is done he needs to be busting his behind. There is not a player at any level that won’t tell you the easiest part of football is playing in the game. Why, because preparing for the games is where if you are real, you are putting in your real sweat and effort, hell come game time, its a breeze.. Ask Joe Montana/Jerry Rice, Peyton Manny/Marvin Harrison, and all the other great QB’s and receivers, and players at every other position for that matter.

J-Russ sits, the Raiders win, period, hands down. They will be a respectable and formidable team to face. With J-Russ, I am putting 11 in the box..lol Why not he buckles under pressure. I love the Raiders, but this is the real.

"J-Russ sits, the Raiders win, period, hands down"

Could have sworn I heard the same thing about Collins, Walter, Brooks, etc. Since Gannon left, it hasn’t mattered who the QB was, the fans hated him, couldn’t wait to get him pulled even if it meant starting somebody like Tuiasosopo, and always were sure if we just got the back up in there, we’d be all right.

If only it were that simple…

The poll needs an "all of the above" option

The offense is horrible up and down. The play calling is the worst, the qb doesn’t care (he was on the sidelines laughing when it was 20-6), the WR’s can’t catch, and the O-line can’t block for Darren MacFumble. There is no fix this year. It will play out as another 11 loss (or more) year, and Al will do insane things in the offseason and draft people out of order and we will continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL.
This team is not only horrible on the field, but is also in danger of going broke. The profits are non-existent, the fans are revolting, and Davis is the lunatic running the asylum that is spiraling into the abyss. This team will end up moving to another city to stay afloat. It sucks, but it is the reality of the situation. We can all try to deny it, but when you really think about it, there is no other option.

J Russel

IN the San Diego game first half , the running game was good, but they found out the QB could not hit the side of a barn, so they went to a 8/9 people in the box to stop the run. and the rest is history. That is happening all the time now, 8/9 in the box to stop the run and let Russel beat us… that is the answer every Sunday. Check it out. All the other teams have picked it up and it works. If the QB could pass than our running game would work better. Teams now pass to get the run started. so says Pittsburgh ex- coach.
Players are not dumb, they know whats going on and that affects how they play…

Wyoraider and rightnasty I am in agreement with both of you, I am really not matter

of fact on every point I make. Will changing QB’s right now make us division champs probably not, however, it will give us the best chance to win right now. Of course, I hope by some miracle J-Russ can have a complete turnaround and nothing is iimpossible, but it is not probable. On that rightnasty I agree, changing QB’s doesn’t guarantee anything, however, it does give us a better chance to compete.

Wyoraider, as you, I don’t think Al would make J-Russ number 3 either, but that is where he needs to be for now, his learning curve is just longer, Hopefully, he can get himself ready by next season, and with hard work in the offseason he can.

The Raiders as a team are not that far from being really good, we are young and fast, it will just take a commitment from J-Russ if he is to be our QB of the future, meanwhile, I would be looking for a 4th or 5th round gem out there, to keep the youth but a guy with strong drop back fundamentals..ie Tom Brady.. They are out there in D-1, D-1AA, and so forth but you have to actively scout.

I have been a Raider fan as long as I have known what football is and I will always support my squad, so again, let us all look at what we do have and hope Al will allow better decisions to be made to promote winning in future.
