Raider Draft Evaluation.... 'What could have been.."
I was talking to a guy in the stands at the recent Chiefs game and I wanted to take a quick look at the Raider draft picks over the last 7 years. I know it's always easy to look back post-draft, but our scouting has been absolutely horrible... or... we have a washed up old fart calling the shots (which is more likely) and ignoring any football-minds we have on staff.
Summary (with detail below)
Over the last 7 years....
What we drafted - Darren McFadden, JaMarcus Russell, Michael Huff, Fabian Washington, Robert Gallery, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Tyler Brayton
"What could have been..." - Nnamdi Asomugha, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Aaron Rodgers, Haloti Ngata, Adrian Peterson, and Glenn Dorsey. It makes me want to cry right now!!! =)
2008 - Darren McFadden (4th Overall)
The jury is still out on this pick; however, I NEVER agreed with this pick. We had more pressing needs on the D-Line and secondary. McFadden could still be a star in this league; however, I would have gone a very different route.
Better Option - Glenn Dorsey
2007 - JaMarcus Russel (1st Overall)
Where do I begin? Holy crap! I watched him in person several times over the last couple of years and he is absolutely, postively horrible. This guys sucks!... and on top of it, he doesn't give a crap about getting better. I don't usually hate on my Raider players, but JaMarcus is a piece of crap!
Better Option - Anybody but JaMarcus! Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Gaines Adams.. do I need to go on?... okay, Joe Thomas, Levi Brown, Jamaal Anderson
2006 - Michael Huff (7th Overall)
He has shown slight improvement; however, yet another horrible pick. I was begging for the Raiders to take one of the DTs and once again... we fouled it up.
Better Option - Haloti Ngata or DeAngelo Williams
2005 - Fabian Washington (23rd Overall)
Another speed-guy pick, definitely reaks of Grandpa Davis.Horrible pick.... even for a late 1st rounder.
Better Option - Aaron Rodgers or Luis Castillo
2004 - Robert Gallery (2nd Overall)
I will not fault the Raiders for this pick. I actually liked this one at the time. The only one I supported in recent memory, but there definitely ended up being better options.
Better Option - Larry Fitzgerald, Philip Rivers, Sean Taylor, Ben Roethlisberger, Steven Jackson
2003 - Nnamdi Asomugha (31st overall) and Tyler Brayton (32nd overall)
The Raiders obviously made an outstanding pick in Asomugha. Thank god we actually got one right!
Brayton has not worked out as well, but I will take 100 more drafts like this!!!
Better Option (for Brayton) - Anquan Boldin

Draft Picks
It’s easy to go back and criticize picks when we know how things turned out after the fact. The only first-round selections I had qualms about would be Darrius Heyward-Bey and Fabian Washington. I was okay with everything else at the time.

I don't have a problem w/ Huff
Schweigert had a problem under Rob Ryan in the same position. Huff got benched and then took it upon himself to work w/ Nnamdi Asomugha to get better, and it’s shown.
I have a problem w/ McFadden. I didn’t want McFadden to begin with. All he’s been so far is injury-prone.
And well Russell, I tried to back him. And then I called for his head and the entire blog wanted to kill me. And then the following week everyone saw what I saw and all the Russell defenders have been strangely quiet.
Gallery was a good pick except wrong position. Once he got moved he became a solid player.
LIke RRS said, it’s easy to look back and see what should have been. But we now we have to live w/ what we picked.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
50/50
the draft is just like a box of cracker-jacks you never know what the prize inside will be until you open them …sometime you get a cool press on tatoo and sometimes a crappy riddle or two and after you have opened the box there is no turning back your just stuck with what you get it just so happens the RAIDERS have been getting the crappy riddle for sometime now.
The draft isn't a lottery
you don’t just blindfold your self and point and that’s who you get.
The draft is bad because of the way we pick them. The crappy riddle is the man that runs the ship.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Going back I really wish we had gotten
2006 – Matt Leinart
2007 – Calvin Johnson
2008 – Glenn Dorsey
2009 – Eugene Monroe or Brian Orapko
2011 – Still had the F’ing Pick (No offense to Seymour he is a STUD)
Leinart
In his defense, ol’ boy was great in his six years at USC with all that amazing talent and coaching around him both offensively and defensively.

Russell
JaMarcus went to LSU, by the way.
Also, I hate Matt Leinart. I was being sarcastic.

I will stick with my picks
Leinart? no f’ing way. He is the white version of JaMarcus. Got the big pay day and doesn’t care about winning or getting better.
I can’t argue with C.J, but would definitely rather have Peterson.
Light up the Freakin Halo!
Hindsight is always 20/20
You don’t see teams sitting there pondering why they didn’t select Tom Brady five times over.
The fact is that due to the amount of rounds in the draft, you draft for need, not talent a lot of the time. So when someone doesn’t pan out it’s either because you did a bad job scouting or he just couldn’t hack it in the big league. You can’t say, oh we drafted this DT but we shoulda gotten this diamond in the rough RB. No one can read minds.
I acknowledged that in my post
However, I would always draft for the highest talent, especially when you are as bad as we have been since 2002. WE NEED EVERYTHING.

Sometimes I see us play
and I think we just need a good play caller and Davis to stop meddling.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
nor can they scout
JaMarcus is the perfect example of putting a ton of weight on the combine. How about watching film, looking at the offense run by LSU (far from NFL quality), and putting weight on his intelligence level. Just listen to the dude take an interview… he is too stupid to be an NFL QB
Light up the Freakin Halo!
Well I won't go as far as calling him stupid,
but I think he’s lazy.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
I dont Know.
I question his mental Ability alot. He is way to lazy though. I just want him to care. Show a little effort into bettering himself
It's pretty clear a lot of our picks put our immediate positional needs and even the consensus best guy available
behind Al’s or someone’s priority when they lock in on a guy.
Though I was also guilty of being enamored by Jamarcus’ physical gifts, the list of other qbs we didn’t take because we made that monumental mistake is ever growing, and that is inexcusable. True, it’s easy to look back and criticize or say what was good.
It’s interesting when you see guys like Fitzgerald, Boldin, Calvin Johnson. Ngata and Dorsey. When you look at the amount of dropped balls and lack of passing game, or inability to defend the run on the flip side. And somehow, still every year I’m fooled into believing we’ll actually take who most trusted GM types believe are the best picks for us, and over and over we take track stars.
I can’t help but be angry about not addressing those needs with our top picks when we could have. I am, however, thankful that we continue to have some shining starts with some of the picks, like Nnamdi, Huff, Murphy and Myers this year. In that aspect, the crapshoot that the draft is, we are fortunate to come out with some steals.
When looking at top picks, too, perecentage wise, around the league, how few actually immediately work out? It’s why guys like Belichick and Rich McKay, Scott Pioli, sometimes Parcells even—avoid the early picks these days.
Our record is not good drafting QBs & LBs
They rarely work out. So why not trade draft picks for active NFL players (like Seymour, one of our best)? Let other teams gamble on college stars and projections while we fill the weak gaps on both lines and MLB.

God forgive me for publishing falsehoods - the truth is that Seymour is horrible
Seymour is purification I’ve been watching Dallas game reruns and he was just bad – the worst Defender of all. Behold our left tackle in action …

Nation, I feel your pain, however...
The Raiders draft for system and not necessarily for need. They have a system in place and you can argue whether is valid or not, but the fact that Mr. Davis drafts for speed can and will be an assett for this franchise. The problem with the Speed First Philosophy is that there are other glaring needs and when the Raiders have attempted to fill these need positions, some of the picks haven’t worked out too well. Most of this can be placed at the feet of Mr. Davis because he doesn’t have a “Football Guy” that has contacts at the Major College Level. I live in Boston and having studied the Patriots closely, I can tell you why they draft so well. Bill Belicheck has a fraternity of coaches at the college level that give him scouting reports on players from all the major conferences. The Patriots traditionally draft heavy out of the SEC, why because Nick Saban and Al Groh are head coaches in this conference and both have ties to Coach B. Also, he’s good friends or associated with Pat Hill from Fresno State too. So every blue chipper that plays against him, he can compare against the talent he has on his team and this is given to the coaches that are Pro and/or friendly with a particular program.
The Raiders Coaching Woes weaken their position when it comes to getting quality scouting reports. You have to draft for your organization and Mr. Davis certainly finds his speed guys and I can’t wait to see the day when he keeps a coach in place so they can put together a more effective strategy for drafting players.
