Marijuana in the Athletic World
With the Raiders not playing till next sunday, I have decided to bring up a touchy subject. A subject that is casually forgotten in the sports world. Something that needs to be brought up and talked about more than it is.
When you think of athletes using drugs, you'll usually think of HGH or steroids. But, marijuana is a common drug being abused by athletes all over the U.S. Alot of these athletes are considered the best or were the best in their respected sport.
In the past week, I saw that MLB phenom Tim Lincecum, was caught with a marijuana pipe and 3.3 grams of marijuana. He is considered the best pitcher in the majors and he obviously has smoked weed in the past and has been since in the league. He is still the best in the league and is being considered for the 2009 Cy Young award.
The NFL is littered with so called "Pot Heads". A few are incredible athletes. There are players who have admitted to smoking in their NFL careers or players who have been caught by either the league or the law. Here are the top 4.
1) Ricky Williams. Ricky was a monster coming out of college. He was rewarded the Heisman trophy in 1998. He was drafted in 1999. He tested postive in 2004 and 2007. In his case, Marijuana ruined his promising career. He is now decent HB for Miami Dolphins.
2) Randy Moss. Randy Moss is one of the NFL’s greatest receivers of all time. Moss has been caught with marijuana and has also admitted to smoking marijuana on HBO’s Real Sports With Brian Gumbel. On the show he said “I have used, you know, marijuana … since I’ve been in the league….But as far as abusing it and, you know, letting it take control over me, I don’t do that, no….hopefully … I won’t get into any trouble by the NFL by saying that, you know. I have had fun throughout my years and, you know, predominantly in the offseason.” He is now well on his way to Canton, Ohio.
3) Michael Vick, Michael was caught with marijuana right after his dog fighting allegations. There has always been questions on if Michael Vick has been caught with marijuana or how many urine tests he has actually failed. Michael Vick is now known as a dog killer. And is hated by alot of America.
4) Santonio Holmes, Santonio is known as a good reciever for the Steelers and his amazing catch in the Super Bowl. But, in 2008 he was arrested by the police on marijuana charges. Santonio was a SuperBowl MVP and is stil playing in the NFL.
And of course, Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps is the greatest olympian of all time. He swept the swimming competitions in the 2008 Olympics. But, Micheal was unfortunatley taking a hit of a bong when someone snapped a photo of him. He was questioned for weeks. It was huge news. Michael is currentley the greatest swimmer and olympian ever.
These are just a few of the athletes who have or still do use marijuana. There are many more in the U.S. In fact, there are too many to name. These guys are just a few of the big names. Now, you may wonder why I wrote each athletes current state in their sports. I did so because I believe that marijuana is a non harmful drug that is given a bad name. I feel that it needs to be legalized. But thats just me. These are some of the better athletes of this generation. And Im sure a few of them are still users. I can't be sure, but im about as darn close to sure as there is.
So, I have a few questions for you Raider Nation. Do you care if athletes abuse or do you not care? Do you think that there are current users in any sport? If so. Who? Thank You.
P.S.** I do not condone the use of marijuana in any way. So don't flag this post if you hate marijuana. Just read and comment. Thanks again.

Too much of anything is bad. All things in moderation.
I’m not some pot head, but I smoke weed from time to time. Marijuana is not an addictive drug by any means. Alcohol and cigarettes are by far way more addictive but are legal. The only difference is that the government taxes them and is able to make a shit load of money on their sales. The government doesn’t care about the # of people that die year after year from alcoholism, drunk driving, lung cancer, and all that is related to alcohol and cigarettes.
Slowly but surely the government has loosened up on marijuana. I mean there are plenty of places now that you can just walk in and purchase legal weed with the proper cerifications. And all of these canibus clubs are taxed on the amount of weed that they sell yearly. So now that the government has started to tax it, it won’t be long before it’s nationwide.
Even the law in regards to being caught with certain amounts of weed isn’t punished with much more than a fine or community service.
Myself, I take a few hits from the bong after the kids go to bed and I need to unwind or watch a funny movie with a little extra help. Believe me, Step brothers and Pineapple Express were ten times better with a little enhancement than without.
So like I said, all things in moderation.

Tim Lincecum
Tim Lincecum, one of the best pitchers in baseball, was just given a citation last week while being caught with a little bit of it in Washington.

Hmmmm....
It’s bothered me for a very long time that Mary-Jane is on the list of drugs not acceptable in sport. Whilst it’s an offence to carry/use/sell MJ in the majority of countries around the world, it’s hardly performance enhancing is it? Unless you are in a hot-dog eating contest.
I agree that any substance that gives an athlete an unfair advantage on the sporting field should be outlawed but i don’t think pot is one of them. If anything it would be detremental to an athlete’s performance because it negatively affects reaction times and visual perceptions. But a couple of things it won’t do is help you run faster, tackle harder, pass or catch more accurately. So if Ricky, Randy and Timmy L are still the best in the world at their chosen sport AND they like to partake in a bowl or two then more credit to them. Leave them be and allow them continue to entertain me.

My opinion can be summed up in 3 words
Puff, Puff, Pass!
"Mel Kiper has his opinion and I respect it. But what does it mean? My 9-year-old nephew can watch film and make an opinion. I think I value the opinion of scouts who get paid to make their opinions. It will carry me through my career. It will serve as motivation for me." - Mike Mitchell
"I'll be the guy on top of the Quarterback" - Richard Seymour

As long as they perform
This post wasn’t really about the problems with players smoking. It was more of a political thing. Just a little more proof that marijuana is not that harmful

Marijuana
To say it isn’t harmful is ignorant and stupid. It’s not illegal by accident. Don’t even try to argue how it’s beneficial when the cons outweigh the pros.

No Serious Medical Studies...
…have ever found it to be a dangerous drug, apart from its delivery system: smoking. The substance itself is relatively harmless and has mild medicinal benefits. The AMA recently came out and said it should be removed from the list of dangerous drugs, like heroin and cocaine – even non-users know pot is nothing compared to those hard drugs. And the entire ‘gateway’ scenario has fallen apart under any serious scientific scrutiny. This is simply a matter of politics run amok.

Agreed
But I know itts not good for you either..If I go on a bender for a week or so, I can speak in sentences or remember a thing for a long while. But, I also know that alcohol has caused almost ten times as more deaths. And don’t even get me started on tobacco.

Can I ask
how, judging by the the tone here, you do smoke weed, but yet you get all bent out of shape over someone smoking tobacco which does not alter your mind?
Personally I don’t care what people do in their free time, but I can’t stand when people get on a soap box.

Just in case
I accidently said I can speak sentences. I ment Can’t. And I do smoke quite a bit. And I do use tobacco quite a bit. And I drink only at parties. But, I just wonder how they keep alcohol legal and marijuana illegal. I dont hate any of them. I just think that marijuana is the black sheep in the substance family.

Well don't forget
at one time Alcohol was illegal at one time. I think the law hasn’t caught up to the knowledge yet about weed. It should be treated as alcohol and in some states we’re getting closer to that. I can understand why right now the NFL has a policy against it because it is illegal. Should it become legal I’m sure the NFL won’t care about it.
Did you know that the legal limit for weed in your blood for a DUI is only 5ng. You can smoke right now and tomorrow afternoon technically get a DUI.

Yeah...
Thats why it will be difficult for the police to tell when someone is stoned in publis or while driving. Its hard to tell at times if the person is smart and I don’t know any tests that can detect without peeing in a cup or taking a blood test. But if they just taxed it and treated it as alcohol then the gov can make some true money and save alot more

I do have a problem
with people driving on it and working on it only because I have been with friends that got stoned and was driving and I made him pull over and I drove his car. Not that he’s not a good driver, he is, but he was swerving and all and I didn’t want to die or him get a DUI. Not that I’m innocent, but I just don’t need any more deformed limbs. But I think w/in 10 years we’ll see pot sold like alcohol.

i would agree w/that
but at some point you have to look at the number of people that are successful livin w/it. it obviously doesn’t have the same negative effect serious drugs like crack or meth have, so it definitely shouldn’t be put in the same category.
I mean, salvio is legal, which is a proven halucinogen. marijuana is not anywhere near the level of some of the other drugs (cigarettes, alcohol, etc) that are legal.

You can't compare
pot to cigarettes. Weed does obviously alter your ability to make a decision and think.

Im sure alot more players than posted smoke
Almost all mediocre NBA players do along with alot of NFL players

I don't think sports really care if their athletes smoke weed, especially the NBA!
I think if people do not like that particular person it is a bigger deal or if that person is not performing up to expectations. Lincecum getting caught is a blip on the radar screen. If it was JaMarcus getting caught I am sure it would only raise the decibel level on how much Russell is a waste of flesh.
As far as examples, how about the Chief, Robert Parish! The guy was a stud on the court and played for like a billion years and got caught with a bunch of weed.
As has been said: anything in moderation is ok. Christ Bill Clinton smoked weed. Hell, the abuse of red meat probably leads to more deaths than weed.
I could care less if people want to shoot up heroin laced with crack while swallowing pain killers with whiskey as long as they don’t interfere with others pursuit of happiness. It may not be a good choice but it is their choice.
It cracks me up that while California is contemplating selling themselves to China, ’cause they need the money, that they spend money trying to enforce marijuana laws instead of legalizing it and taxing it.
Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast.
