JaMarcus Russell Catches Foot-In-Mouth Disease

Images_medium

Russell speaks again, when he would have done himself and his future (what there is of it) good, if he would have just kept it shut.

Incredibly, these are excerpts from discussions with reporters today as provided by RaiderBeat.com:

RUSSELL BLAMES TEAMMATES FOR NOT MAKING PLAYS, WON’T TAKE PAY CUT

Managing general partner Al Davis loves backup quarterback JaMarcus Russell, there is no other way to explain his continued presence on the roster.  In his three years in Oakland Russell has been paid almost two million dollars a touchdown.  Or if you prefer to measure his success in victories, Russell has cost a little over 4.5 million per win.  But it was not his fault, just ask him.

"Uh, kind of hard because there was times where you try to get guys a chance to make plays and at the early part of the year, it wasn’t happening," Russell said when asked to grade his play this season.  "So, the quarterback job, I say he looks for more help around from everybody because he can’t do it himself. It wasn’t so well but at times it was. When we look at film, it don’t be as bad as it seems on the field always."

According to Russell it is not that quarterback Bruce Gradkowski is playing well, he is just lucky enough to be standing behind the center when everyone around him starts making plays.

"Guys are just making plays around him," Russell said. "In the Dallas game after you go out and win in Cincinnati there wasn’t plays really made the whole game, you know what I mean. Going into Pittsburgh, guys were making plays for him. That’s what a quarterback needs, his surrounding players. That’s what was going on."

Russell is due $9.45 million in salary next season and he intends on making the Raiders pay all of it.  When asked if he would rework his deal JaMarcus balked.

"Oh, no. That’s over and done with," Russell said. "I don’t even consider that as a part of it."

Considering the giant step backwards the Raiders would take anointing  Russell the starter again next season, it is hard to imagine them paying him close to ten million dollars to hold a clip board as the backup. Russell clearly has lost touch with his market value.  Russell will need to rework his contract to resemble that of a backup quarterback.  Unless there is another team out there willing to pay him like a starter he will have very little leverage he will either sign for less or be cut to sign a backup contract with another team.

Russell summed it all up as only he could,  "People going to have their opinion, and I really don’t pay too much attention to that. I worry about JaMarcus and JaMarcus only."

Just when I thought I hated enough, he goes out and says shit like this..Its just getting sad..Plus, He’s officially made Quarterback Meetings awkward. I doubt Bruce is OK with JaMarcus saying stuff like that.

He basically threw the rest of the offense under the bus

If he was hoping for any support from the rest of the team, I think he’ll find that he is alone now. But he doesn’t worry about it, he worries about JaMarcus and JaMarcus only.

Bruce is thinking what the rest of us are thinking now…why didn’t the old man draft Calvin Johnson!!!

Let me add he can actually play football at this level where Russell can’t. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc

There’s a latin expression – post hoc ergo propter hoc – which means “It comes after it, therefore it was caused by it.” Many of you here at S&BP have used this basic argument to show that replacing JaMarcus Russell with Bruce Gradkowski was the solution to our problems.

In the most basic sense, the logic holds true – the Raiders are 2-1 with Gradkowski at the helm and have shown significantly better chemistry on the offensive side of the ball. To suggest, however, that the Russell for Gradkowski swap was the only change that has occurred in the past few weeks is somewhat shortsided, and I think this is what Russell is getting at.

When Russell got pulled from the Kansas City game he had received little to no support from the other players on the offensive side of the ball. Everyone on the offense had their head down with all the 3 and outs and failed drives. However, and I agree with Russell’s assessment here, the receivers have made significantly more plays for Gradkowski than they did for Russell. Unlike all of the drops of the KC game, the receivers and backs seemed to catch almost all catchable balls in Pitts on Sunday and overall put in a significantly better effort.

However, this argument cuts both ways, and it’s this second part that Russell needs to figure out. If the receivers see Gradkowski putting in more effort in preparing for the games, they are obviously responding by putting in more effort themselves. Many offensive players said in their post-game interviews that they were responding better to Gradkowski’s effort and leadership style. These are things that Russell needs to pay attention to.

If Russell wants to be the starting QB for the Raiders again he needs to prove it to the coaching staff, to his teammates, and to the media so they’ll get off his back about a supposed poor work ethic. If not…he’ll be Exhibit 1 in the owners’ argument for a rookie salary cap for the NFL Draft.

Russell is obviously frustrated with the situation and probably shouldn’t have said some of the things he did in this interview, but some of the things he said I don’t disagree with. Still, the best way to be a leader is to lead by example, and Gradkowski is doing a significantly better job of it right now than he is. If he wants his supporting players to do more for him, he’s going to have to show a willingness to reciprocate.

From Tim Kawakami's blog entry re: Russell's Q&A
-Q: Do you consider yourself the team’s QB of the future?

-RUSSELL: No doubt. That hasn’t changed in my mind at all.

-Q: Would you be open to compete for starting job next year?

-RUSSELL: I will work my butt off to be that guy.

I know many of you would disagree with me at this point, but I for one hope this is the case, and that Russell can once again take the reigns of this team.

As for your hopes of him being the leader once again. I cant possibly strongly dissagree with anything in my life more than that. Why do you want JaMarcus to be the QB?

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

by Remix. on Dec 10, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

It's a good question
Why do you want JaMarcus to be the QB?

Right now I don’t, as its obvious the team is responding better to having Gradkowski at QB. But long term I still see a young kid with a ton of talent who is still learning how to play the game at the NFL level, who made strides at the end of last year, and couldn’t seem to catch a break at any point this year.

With the level of inconsistency this team has shown over the past 7 seasons, I don’t believe that Russell’s career as an Oakland Raider should be judged on 26 games. At the same time, if he doesn’t do the things Monday through Friday that lead to the coach penciling him in at QB on Sunday, or can’t rally the rest of his teammates around him to the common goal of winning, then his “John Elway” ceiling doesn’t really amount to anything and we’ll have to move on.

I'm in the smallest of minorities, but I'm still a big supporter of JaMarcus Russell.

Goes back to the original point

I don’t believe the problems with the Raiders offense were 100% on Russell. He obviously contributed to the problem, but as he said in a roundabout fashion in his interview, people weren’t really making plays around him either.

Russell now has two problems to overcome – getting himself to play at 100% of his potential (which I will agree hasn’t occurred yet), and also getting his teammates to support him again. If he can do those things I still think he’ll be a better football player than anything else we have or could get through free agency or the draft.

I'm in the smallest of minorities, but I'm still a big supporter of JaMarcus Russell.

by LiveAdam on Dec 11, 2009 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

I don't believe in him like you do

but I think both problems will remedy each other.

If he comes out and give it 100% and takes charge and does his job like he should, the other players will join him in the effort. Gradkowski is proof of that.

Russell's Key To Success

1. Accuracy, He needs to throw the ball softer on short routes. He can just rocket a ball in when he needs to lob it.
2. Awareness, After watching Bruce’s awarness in the pocket, its obvious to me that JaMarcus was “slow” in the pocket.
3. Leadership, When you watch other NFL QB’s, even Bruce, they all lead their teams. and the team follows.

Not to mention the offense has already been dumbed down for him!!! Now what receiver would actually want to work their butts off to make this guy look good??? Good argument, but....

I think there are some fundamentals that you may have missed or have left out and I feel it needs to be discussed. JaMarcus’ problems with being an NFL quarterback is his inability to be a leader. This is not something that can be taught, it is an innate ability to see yourself as part of a team and know that your position is the most integral part of that team. I haven’t been able to watch as many games as I’d like because i am in SoCal and we’re so terrible the networks don’t even consider it. However i do listen to live games every week and read up on his interviews. The main thing that he doesn’t seem capable of is being accountable and recognizing his own shortcomings. Being a true leader means being accountable for the wins as well as the losses. How are teammates supposed to follow a guy who blames them for his performance and doesn’t acknowledge his own mistakes. Forget the missed plays and dropped passes. Just look at the 5 yd passes thrown at the players feet… Or a 10 yd pass thrown 4 feet over the receivers head.
I just think that he doesn’t have the personality or the intelligence to lead a locker room. Bruce has average talent and JaMarcus can throw the long ball… But he cant make the short pass and Bruce can. Enough said..

whether I agree with what he says or not, I never agree with a guy like him, ever, vocalizing it

It says, I’m a douchebag who cares of himself and himself only, and will never have the leadership characteristics needed to be the catalyst to take teams in this league to the next level.

It’s always been his inability to do those things that make the greats great: being among the hardest working guys on the squad, earliest to practice, last to leave, always willing to do the little things, and not just willingness but ability to reach out and form bonds with their fellow soldiers. Jamarcus has never had it, and continues to prove he might never get it either.

JaJackAss

Some things to consider regarding your comments…Work ethic…footwork in the pocket…pocket presence…reading the entire field instead of looking and throwing(inaccurately i might add) to one side of the field…weight/mobility issues…leadership skills(lack thereof),,,accountability…immaturity…now im guessing it would take an entire career and a decade of 4-12 seasons to MAYBE correct all these problems. you are asking a selfish man to “figure out” things he cares nothing about,as he said he “cares about JaJackAss and JaJackAss only” I wouldnt give 100% if i played on offense with this unprepared tub of shit either so Good luck Bruce and continue to inspire your team with preparation ,effort and leading by example, you may or may not be the future of this franchise but it sure is nice to see someone at the helm who cares and puts out the effort to give his team a chance to win instead of lose.So “smallest of minorities” Maybe you can get him to sweep your driveway for 9 million a year when he gets cut in the near future.

Immaturity

the only thing JR needs is accountability/maturity. He needs to accept that the QB position is a position of leadership where any losses is your fault. From there, he will grow as a leader and everything – weight, extra work, preparation, anticipating WRs’ break on routes will all fall in place. I was hoping that this would be his year to step up as it usually takes 3 to 4 yrs as a QB to get it. From that perspective, I feel like the abused wife who makes excuses for the slaps; I can no longer support him until he grows up. He sounds like the cuddled football player where coaches from the age of 12 blew smoke up his ass to have him on their side. Listening to him is embarassing.

Are facts that inconvenient for you? Russell actually made the receivers worse by telegraphing throws and displaying the touch of a bulldozer. I’m not ready to say Grads is the answer yet but I know Russell isn’t. Further moor we do have holes on the team and his 9 million dollar base salary can be better utilized (a top 5 MLB is what 5m/yr?) then spending it on a second string QB. Even if the Raiders go ‘full retard’ and keep him they will need to bring in someone else because Russell is a liability at backup QB. You may bring him in to hand-off and run some simple play action off it but you really can’t hide him from a defense long enough to be a starter.

once you prove him wrong, then he’ll play the racism card. I’m trying to figure out where he’s trying to give Russell credit for winning a game…

I don't think Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan would have helped much

since they’re basketball players one of which who is pushing 50 and has been retired for years.

Of course I have no idea who this “russel” guy even is maybe he plays with “mike irvan”.

lol what a dickhead

Maybe if JR could make a single accurate throw or lead the team on a single touchdown drive, the guys around him would have :made plays". Bruce has led the same team JR had and has gotten twice as many wins in less than half the time.

Somebody has been blowing smoke up this kid’s ass. If he was even a halfway competent quarterback, we would have won at least a couple more games this year under him. Instead, he was possibly the worst starting QB in the league over the past two seasons, and upgrading to even a middle-of-the-road schmoe like Gradkowski improved us by leaps and bounds.

I don’t care how hard he works, he is never going to get any smarter. He is a complete imbecile and should never be allowed near this team again.

These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx

Bruce has been lucky in the sense that the Raiders got a little healthier when he took over the starting job. Gallery, Schillens and Mcfadden came back, not to mention he played with the rookies Murphy and Heyward-bey starting. That said, he played horribly. He’s on Ryan Leaf status as far as Im concerned. At 9 million a year whos going to pay him that? ever? He got his lottery ticket and cashed it,, he’ll never give the money back. He’s not stupid, he knows he’ll never get that money again. Mcnabb did it because he knows he can play and will get that money by playing and starting in the league longer, Alex Smith did it because he believes in himself and thinks he’ll be in the league and have an opportunity to get it back.. Deep down I believe Russel knows he better get the money while he can. So he’s actually not as dumb as I thought he was. LoL Go Raiders!!!!

One thing

Let me start by saying I hope to never see JaMarcus Russell ever play again for the Raiders but….

I sure wouldn’t be surprised to see him under center at the start of next season. Al Davis is a very prideful man who has a lot invested in Russell.

Add in Davis’ obsession with big armed quarterbacks who can go deep and I see Davis giving Russell another chance.

Two of the best quarterbacks in Raiders history are Kenny Stabler and Rich Gannon and Davis wasn’t a huge fan of either.

He had to be talked into drafting Stabler by Ron Wolf and he traded him to Houston for Dan Pastorini who was the type of big armed QB that Davis loves.

Gannon was Gruden’s choice and would have never come to the Raiders otherwise and now he’s not even allowed in the building.

Russell is in the long Raider tradition of million dollar arm but 10 cent brain quarterbacks like Patorini,Wilson,Schroeder and George.

Let’s hope that Russell either shocks the world and becomes a good player or that Al has learned his lesson on this type of quarterback and moves on but….

Plunkett

where does plunkett fits in? back up who took the job after injuries to Pastorini and never let go until he got a couple of rings.

by raiders4liffe on Dec 12, 2009 4:47 AM PST up reply actions

Plunk never put up the best of numbers, and one could argue teams won despite Plunk a few games on those runs

But he was clutch enough to win some big games. He’ll never go down in history as one of the best, because he just wasn’t that great.

At first

I thought it was funny, but then when I got to thinking about it, it’s incredibly depressing. I wondered as I was reading it how many people might agree with him that if only THEY were making the plays, he’d have better stats. But I see most of us are thinking the same thing. Sometimes I want to feel sorry for Russell, but he makes it impossible.

I think it has been established already that Jruss does not have the gift of the gab

I think he struggles to express what he means and I dont think he means what is being interpreted from his statement.

I do worry that our ‘QB of the future’ does not seem very smart though………….

"Mel Kiper has his opinion and I respect it. But what does it mean? My 9-year-old nephew can watch film and make an opinion. I think I value the opinion of scouts who get paid to make their opinions. It will carry me through my career. It will serve as motivation for me." - Mike Mitchell

I was kind of surprised

That they came right and asked him if he’d be willing to take a pay cut, but not that he said no. Not saying he shouldn’t, but I’m surprised when anybody does that, even Walker.

I think

we may be taking the I care bout JaMarcus and JaMarcus only statement wrong. I think he meant that about working on getting better.

that he’s not worried about the opinions of others – it just didn’t come out the way he probably wanted.

which is why he should've learned by now to stfu

The media has never worked out for Russell. Celebrity and stardom prove too much for a lot of young guys who haven’t learned valuable life lessons and maturity before they achieve the fame and fortune. I felt sorry for him for a second, now I wish he’d listen to the Deion Sanders’ and Jim Browns’ of the league who’ve helped other youth gone awry right their paths and get second chances in this league. Jadiarreahmouth shows no signs, and even Deion has no love for him right now.

Can JaMarcus find any more ways to make me dislike him? I guess he’ll find a way. I hope to God he gets cut next year.

by Walker Wallace on Dec 11, 2009 6:16 PM PST reply actions

Misunderstood

ok, he’s misunderstood. Bottom line, he’s not saying what leaders say and he’s not indicating that he’s ready/willing to carry the team on his shoulders. That’s what it takes to be winner in this league, except for Dilfer in Baltimore who had the D to carry the team.

JaMEcus

I was very excited when we drafted him and went out and pre-ordered his jersey. I will never wear that Jersey again. It’s not just how bad he plays, it’s his character! I don’t see why some of you think that he should get another shot. Why can’t Bruce be our QB of the future? The guy is a good leader and makes good decisions. He is only 25 yrs old. I remember another QB who did not have a great arm named Rich Gannon. He had a great run in the Silver and Black. Russell is not a leader, and I hope that we cut him.

JaOffthemarkus

Here;s the thing in my opinion – you take some of those throws Grad threw last week (the 75 yarder to Murphy or the final TD) – do you really think Russell would have made either of those, given the same routes, protection, etc? I sure don’t. What other team would take him right now or at the end of the season?

Off topic – this is my first post here, as a long-time (40 year+) East coast Raider fan.

I’d be happy if people would locate and use the fucking reply button more. It gets real hard some times to figure what conversation they’re trying to chime in when there’s 10000 comments under 1 comment and then they just comment into empty space.

From this article

Offensive tackle Mario Henderson said after the game yesterday, “I don’t know what the deal is with Bruce but we’re all going to have to pick it up. If (Russell’s) the man we’re obviously going to have to pick it up because he’s back there.”

Take that how ever you want.
