Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

When Russell plays its like being on board the Titanic.

I remember when Jamarcus Russell was drafted and how happy I was. I had thought about how a few years before the Raiders had passed up on Eli Manning to draft Robert Gallery.  I was frustrated with the Raiders passing on someone who I thought was a sure thing.  Eli had ended a terrific college career and he had the pedigree (Archie and Peyton), I was hoping the Raiders finally went after a franchise player for us!  I honestly wasnt too upset with Gallery, its never bad drafting Lineman,, I just wanted the superstar! So here we were in 2007 and drafted the guy that would save and resurrect the Raiders.  He wanted big money, I said "give it to him'!  No money was too small for the man that would lead us back to the promise land.

Its almost 2010.  As a Raider fan I'm humbled.  I use to beat my chest and wear my Touchdown Timmy Brown jersey with pride.  I would argue with any nay-sayers about why my team was the best and what we did in the off season to get better.  Now, I have concerns across the board.  From our owner, to our GM/owner, to our draft picks, to our Rb's, our coach, our OL, our DL (Seymoor is a free agent next year, will he want to resign?) and the leader of our team our Quarterback.  The only consistent players we have is the guy who so big he doesnt seem to fit his jersey Sebastian Janikowski and the guy whos usually the smallest guy on the field Nnamdi Asomugha.  There are other bright spots on the roster, but none of which I am certain enough about to mention.

So the Raiders mesiah, our leader, Jamarcus Russell.  He looks the part. Young, big, cannon arm, never rattled.  All this is true. But whats also true is that he just isnt a very good Quarterback.  I see him using half the field, because he just cant see the whole field.  I see him over throwing and underthrowing wide open recievers.  I see him unable to avoid the sack, whether he's missing the second sense to feel the rush like Big Ben in Pittsburgh, or he's just too slow to do anything about it.  Worst of all and this is why I know he's not very good, he misses the 5 yard touch passes that a 1st grader could make, when the reciever or running back is right in front of him.

He came into the game on Sunday and we all knew our Offense was done for the day.  He threw a pick, lost a fumble, got sacked over and over again. He yelled at our line, blamed everyone but himself.  He got booed and earned every single one them boos.  At this point we might as well sign Ryan Leaf and have him lead our team, would it honestly be any worse?  At this point, we should put a number 99 jersery on him and have him practice his blocking or pass rushing, because he is'nt a quarterback.  At 9 million a year if he cant throw we should see if he can block.

Gradkowski is out for the season.  Russell will probably start from here on out.  If your a Raiders fan, your with me on board the Titanic.  That ship like Russell really looked the part. Its unfortunate.

I agree with you completely

I also was duped into thinking we were set for the next 10 years. We got a super star runner, a super star QB, how could we not succeed? It is all just a mess, and I have lost confidence in Cable also and I was a big supporter of him. I believe Cable plays favorites, how else can you explain that the only real runner we have doesn’t even play? I know some will say that everything is controlled by Davis but would Davis really not play Bush?
Bush has played well in some games, when he gets a chance but ever since the fumble in a game three or four games ago, he hasn’t had a sniff. Hell, if that is the criteria why has Russell played since game 1? He is a fumbling machine. I have never been so discouraged as this year, worst ever. And as an aside, there are many players on defense that should be shipped out, Howard, Morrison come to mind. When was the last time this defense got a turnover, I know they are not last in interceptions but surely they must be next to last in turnovers.

Davis would not play Marcus Allen.

That should answer your question about Davis playing Bush. By the way, Davis drafts and signs every player. Cable has what he has and does what he is allowed to do.

Asomugha

He’s not really “locked up” for the long-term. If I was him, I’d probably walk.

Boggles my mind

I just can’t figure it out, what happened since 2002 to now where such worthless, horrible players were drafted or picked up? Who is making these decisions, Denver Donkey fans??? OK, J fata$$ Russell is a complete bust, probably the worst QB the Raiders have ever had, even worse the Marinovich, though he did have a couple of OK games last year, obviously his laziness and appetite got the better of him. But I never did get that J. Walker pick up and still think he was a plant from that Denver Donkey organization. This DH-B no talent draft was bad enough, but to pay him so much money for nothing is absurd! Who is making these personel decisions and when are they going to be fired?!
I had my doubts about Gradkowski, but when I read the report about what he said to a couple of O-linemen that were looking up at the board last week in Pitt, I knew we now have a leader. Not a strong arm, but he throws a catchable ball(for everybody except loser DH-B) and he moves around in the pocket to buy time, something fata$$ JR can’t move his abundant girth to do. AND he makes good decisions on where to throw the ball, something else fata$$ does not do.
When he went out yesterday you could tell it effected everybody in the stadium and the whole team. The well hated JR was NOT going to lead a comeback and everybody knew it. It was sad to see, like watching the horrible games unfold of ealier this season all over again. Would Fry had helped? Probably not, but it least the hopes would not had completely sank like they did when that fata$$ stumbled out onto the field. He made his money, send him back to Lousiana with a bucket of BBQ to retire and send overpaid DH-B and Denver Donkey plant J. Walker with him.
I don’t know Grad’s status at the moment, but I am hoping he will be able to go at Denver, at least with him we would not be embarassed up there and might actually win.
LET’S GET IT TOGETHER RAIDERS, slash the contracts of these nonworking, no talent oafs and let’s get back to business! I’m tired of supporting a team that pays money I give to them to these no-talent lazy oafs, I have been a loyal Silver and Black fan for over 40 years I deserve better than this!

Too Harsh

Your too harsh on DHB..Hes still a rookie who spent most of the year with as you said the worst QB in Raider history..You cant expect normal 1st Rd. Rookie Numbers with JaMarcus as QB..But besides that, I agree with with everything else

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

re: too harsh

Its hard talking about DHB potential, when we have to watch Crabtree fufilling his potential across the bay. Yeah DHB may end up being good, but he’ll never be great. He’s just not a playmaker. He wasnt one in college and he wont be one as a pro. Seymoor wont sign and Nnamdi wont want to resign, because great players want to win. Its reality. This team will have to be built by the draft and by players wanting an opportunity. I had written on a post last week about signing Vick, its a real possiblity. He wants to start and he wants an opportunity. Hes a 3 time pro-bowler and proven winner. I dont like how Cable plays Bush, but then again he’s the coach. Fargas would be a good reserve back, give him 5-10 carries a game, Let Mcfadden be our 3rd down back like Reggie Bush type back and give Michael Bush 20 carries. He averages 100 yds and a T.D. in games he gets 20 carries. He’s our only 100 yd back this season and doesnt see the field. Fargas doesnt even give us 70 yds a game. But hes our team leader and he’s earned his carries.

Disagree and Agree

I disagree with your opinion on DHB..He was a playmaker in college and with a competent QB, he can be a good WR. And I actually agree with you on you perception of the offense. If Tom is going to refuse to run Bush who really deserves to get 20-25 carries a game, he needs to go..Im sad to say it, but this offseason needs to be a rebuilding year..Tom isnt cutting it..Al isnt cutting it. But theres nothing we can do about that. I hope we bring a semi respeceted, partially young, Defensive minded guy to Coach Oakland..

I don't think

we’ll ever have a defensive coach. Isn’t Al more partial to offense minded coaches?

Not that it couldn’t happen…

i hope youre right

I really dont want to be right about what I think about DHB. I just thought statistically he was avg, not spectacular in college.

I like your idea of getting a defensive coach as Head Coach. I remember when I wanted Willie Shaw to get the nod from Al. Cause I’d like to go Bill Belichick come draft day and just load up on defensive guys!! You can get away with poor offense by playing stout defense. Like the Ravens super bowl team and Young Brady super bowl team, oh yeah how about Pittsburg the last few years!

Eddie Erdelatz

Sound Familar? Doubtful..He was the last Defensive minded guy to Coach the Raiders..Oh and that was almost 50 Years ago..He also coached for 1 year and enede up with a 6-10 record.

P.S. The Reply button was put there for a reason

From this article:

Offensive tackle Mario Henderson said after the game yesterday, “I don’t know what the deal is with Bruce but we’re all going to have to pick it up. If (Russell’s) the man we’re obviously going to have to pick it up because he’s back there.”

Well there ya go. Finally a team member speaks out about Russell, even if kinda vaguely.

No Work Ethic

He has plenty of talent, he just refuses to dedicate himself … ZERO work ethic

Problem number 2 with him – as you mentioned – is that he REALLY DOESN’T THINK the team’s record is his fault … THAT IS THE UNBELIEVABLE PART OF THIS STORY!!!
