2010 Raiders draft preview, who we should take, who we shouldnt
So we know that this year is a lost hope guys, were definitely not making the playoffs so the more games we lose the better so we can get a better draft pick. I have been looking forward to the draft wondering who we should take and who Al will want to take and heres a few guys i think we should look at if we actually want to start building a team.
Early Round picks 1-2:
Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame: He will probably go to either the the Rams or the Redskins but if he falls to us its a no brainer, Jake Locker decided to stay his senior year at Washington so that makes Clausen the number 1 prospect at qb this year.
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska or Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma: Suh is the best defensive player in the draft period. He dominates the line of scrimmage and I think he could be the next Warren Sapp, unfortunately he will be either the number 1 or number 2 pick, but if somehow he drops to us this too is a no brainer. Plus we would have another superstar on the team that nobody can pronounce their name. McCoy is very good as well and should be a top 7 pick. On paper our dline is pretty good but Tommy Kelly and Greg Ellis are over the hill. Seymour is on the final year of his contract and he is 29 and injury prone. Personally i thought it was a terrible trade to aquire Seymour for our 2011 first round pick we weren't in any position to win this season with our qb situation and we gave up our future first rounder for a guy that's been injured the past 3 seasons.
Russel Okong, OT, Ok State: Our O-line is in need of a lot of help right now, Khalif Barnes isn't getting it done at right tackle, Okong is the best OT in the draft i would be ecstatic if we landed him with our first pick, however i dont think this pick is flashy enough for dead Al.
Rolando Mclain, ILB, Alabama or Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida: We recently moved Trevor Scott to outside backer, i think he could be effective there but i would rather have him at DE as hes developing into a very good pass rusher. The Raiders run defense is horrible even with the addition of Seymour. If we drafted Mclain or Spikes Kirk Morrison could move to outside backer where i think he is more comfortable and more affective, and this would sure up our run defense. I think Mclain is worth a first round pick, however I think if spikes doesnt get drafted to the Giants he will fall to the second round and we could take him there.
Joe Haden, CB, Florida: NNamdi needs some help. Chris Johnson has been horrible this season, same with Stanford Rout, they both have blazing speed just like Al likes but they cant still manage to get burned. Joe Haden is the best corner coming out of college this year and with all the man we play we can always use good cover corners. NNamdi will be 29 next season so its about time to start developing our corner of the future.
Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech: He is the best pass rusher in the draft period, pressure on the opposing qb makes it easier for our corners to play man all game.
Dez Bryant, WR, Ok State: I dont think Al will go for Dez since he doesn't run a 4.3 also he wont admit that he made a huge mistake drafting DHB over Crabtree, Maclin, and Harvin. It would be nice to have a young dependable possesion reciever however.
Until a few weeks ago i thought it would be priority one to draft us a quarterback. Jamarcus is a joke and there was no hope in site, however Bruce came in and really impressed me, time will tell if he is our qb of the future but i think the best bet is to let him and Jamarcus fight it out for the number one spot in the off season, and may the best man win.. Maybe if Russel sees that he actually has some competition he will stop being so damn lazy and work on his game. For this reason i dont think it is a good idea to use a high draft pick on a qb this upcoming draft. Next season if Jamarcus and Bruce both fail then we definitelly need to either draft someone or pick up someone in the free agency but i think this next season we let them fight it out for the spot. This being said this is a pretty deep draft for qb's, much deeper then last season. I say stay away from the bigger name qb's in the draft the only two that are worth high picks are Clausen and Jake Locker but he decided to stay in school for his senior year. Colt Mcoy i believe will be a bust in the NFL, he is a system qb i think he will be the next Alex Smith, Tebow will be used as a gimick like Mike Vick, and Sam Bradford i think is the guy with the most potential but he is now injury prone.
I would like to take Ryan Malett out of Arkansas if he is still there in the third or fourth round. He's a 6'7 giant and has a rocket of an arm, hes definitely got all the tools to be a pro qb, he may be somewhat of a project but definitely worth the risk of a later round pick. Drafting a qb is always a crapshoot you never know if they will develop into an effective pro, so i think with this deep qb draft its better to wait and take someone in the later rounds.
STAY AWAY AL!!!!:
Now we all know the Raiders and we know the guys that Al likes to draft are big and FAST. Unfortunately most of these guys aren't very good football players. So to insure we don't draft another track team here's a list of guys we need to stay away from this draft.
Taylor Mays, FS, USC: Weve all seen what he can do, he lays monster hits on guys and can fly around the field. Hes got a big name being from USC and he was very impressive as an underclassman but hasn't lived up to the hype in his senior season at SC. He has stiff hips and is very undisciplined as a safety, he also misses tackles because he tries to make the big hit every time. He will be a workout warrior im sure he will have huge numbers at his pro day and Al Davis will fall in love with his size strength and speed. He is basically a bigger version of Mike Mitchell. Sadly i think this will be our first pick in the upcoming draft. If we did take him I would like to see him move to outside backer like Brian Urlacher because of his size and strength.
Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida: Now dont get me wrong this guy has a huge upside, but he also has huge downside. Hes big, and very fast so hes a typical Al Davis pick. Hes 6-6 280 and runs a 4.7 40 so you might as well start preordering his jersey because Al is going to go nuts over those numbers. The dude is a huge risk however, hes had a terrible junior season, hes had a DUI, and hes been known to be lazy and have a bad work ethic.

NFL Draft
I’m against taking a quarterback with our first pick. I’d love to grab Gerald McCoy, but I don’t know if he’d fall to us. Even if we lose out, the odds of cracking the top five are slim. Still, as long as the Lions are picking ahead of us, McCoy is probably gone.
After looking at defensive tackle, I’d look at the offensive line. Russell Okung — the guy you mentioned — and Bruce Campbell appear to be the top players at the offensive tackle spot this year.
Joe Haden is someone I really wouldn’t even consider. The secondary isn’t as big of a weak spot as the defensive line or the offensive line. I agree with staying away from Taylor Mays as well. With how hell Branch has played how well Huff has stepped up, I don’t even think we should draft a safety.

Al will be tempted by Mays' measurables
But I really think the emergence of Huff and Branch and the flashes of promise Mitchell has shown will cause him to stay away.

ya i agree we dont need a safety
we have a lot of young talent at safety tyvon is playing really well and huff is finally playing to his potential but we all know that Al has some weird obsession with drafting secondary, i just have this sick feeling that Al is going to fall in love with Mays and take him even tho we dont need him. If we did take a safety id like to get Berry over Mays i think he would still be on the board.

More importantly
We’ve been drafting way too many DBs in the first round. Need to work on the rest of the team like our godawful run defense.

Right, a team needs to be balanced - synergy leverages a team with even
average NFL quality players so long as there are no weak links. Research, however, shows that at least one exceptional player is needed on either side of the ball – preferably at QB and MLB – to win a Super Bowl.
The weaknesses that Oakland must address are as follows:
First and foremost, we need a HC who knows the game instinctively, is fiercely competitive, can lead and use the given talent in the most advantages way..
Secondly, we desperately need a dominant DT (Nose Guard if we go 3-4)
3rd A Brute OT.
4th a MLB equivalent of Gradkowski on D, a leader, smart, competitive, but most of all physically intimidating.
5th, a Center to anchor the O-line in the mold of Jim Otto / Dave Dalby.
Then hang on for a great ride b/c we could, and should, go all the way.

Its funny
The guys that you want Al to stay away from, are probably the ones who are most enticing to him. Hopefully Al won’t be so predictable this year, like last year.

Clausen?
Like we need another bust QB to pay. Okong should be our reasonable goal given that we won’t have a shot at Suh. I still can’t believe we blew our first in 2011. Maybe if Bill Belichick pisses Moss off he will divulge the tampering that happened and we will get that pick and more back.

Clausen a bust?
why would you say that? ND runs a pro style offense. Hes number 2 in completion percentage, hes number 2 in qb rating hes number 6 in completion percentage hes got 80 TD’s to 20 picks. Hes got good accuracy he can move around and hes 6’3 iono why youd be calling him a bust…

If Clausen puts in the work, he should be fine
From where I sit, he has all the positives of Brady Quinn (accuracy) without the liabilities (arm strength)

We should
Take a QB in like the 3rd round or something, a long shot of some type that can sit on the bench, and possibly surprise everybody. It’s going to be the year of the quarterback, and as long he doesn’t demand a $60 million contract, it’d be worth a chance. Lord knows they need some kind of long term solution at the position.

yah thats why i suggested waiting and taking Malett
hes got all the tools needed to be a pro and he is a bit of a project but yah he could develop into a franchise qb, and god knows he cant be worse then jamarcus.

We Should Do WHATEVER it Takes...
…to get Ndamukong Suh in this draft, and I mean even if it means signing away our souls. This is the one guy who can make an IMMEDIATE impact on our team, and can do so for years to come. An anchor like this will make everyone on the Defense play better. There are moore quality offensive players out there, and they tend to come and go, but a beat like this comes once a generation. We may not be sorry enough to be able to draft the beast, so we need to moove up, somecow. We NEED this guy! We need the BEAST!!!!

Yeah, I wouldn't mind trading up to get him...
but with us having already given away our 2011 1st rounder I don’t think we have the leverage to move up so I don’t see it happening.

Trading up for Suh would be so amazing
But I just don’t see what player other than Nnamdi would even get the Bucs or Rams (one of them will certainly be drafting #1) to even consider trading back. And even then, it’d probably take swapping our first round picks, several other 2010 picks, maybe our 2011 second rounder. I don’t see Davis doing that and I’m not sure he should. Suh is dominating, but this is a deep draft and we can fill many holes.

Oh man
If there is some way in April I see Suh’s name next to the Raiders name on the draft board, I will pee a little.
Realistically though, I don’t see the Raiders getting him. Whoever falls in line to pick him, I really don’t see them trading that pick away. Getting Okung would be nice, as him and Henderson would make a decent tackle pair.
If Bradford somehow falls to the 2nd round, I wouldn’t mind the Raiders taking him. There are other players they should probably take, but I at least wouldn’t feel compelled to start screaming at my TV.
I didn’t have a problem with the Raiders trading their #1 pick in 2011 originally, but that pick was our only chance at landing Jake Locker :(

I don't see Davis taking a QB in the early rounds for a very long time
Walter didn’t worked out and he got burned bigtime by JaMarcus. My guess is he’ll go back to combing the waiver wire and trying to find the next Jim Plunkett or Rich Gannon again.
Jason Campbell, David Carr and Troy Smith will all be free agents this off-season. Plus he’s already got Grads, Frye and Losman on the roster now. Basically, he has options when it comes to finding a veteran castoff and he knows it.

Later round QB for sure
I have lost alot of faith in drafting QB’s early and I think we should be looking at around round 3-4 to find a QB. We should have either Gradkowski or Losman starting next year and I would be hoping for decent upgrades on OL, DL and LB and I believe we would have a good chance next year.

i wouldn't mind getting derrick morgan.
we need more pass rush since we don’t blitz very much. But I want to know how good is he against the run?
If not, then I really like terrence cody. great personality, big at 365 at a height of 6-4, has excellent run stopping power, and sometimes used as a fullback in goal line situations.
Imagine our D-line with this guy!
by patriotguy on Dec 16, 2009 2:53 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Suh would be awesome. But he's going #1 or #2 and we'll be drafting 6-8.
At the risk of everyone rolling their eyes at yet another DB being drafted by the Raiders in the first round, I am advocating the drafting of Joe Haden. I believe he will provide the stable, shutdown presence we need across from Nnamdi. Chris Johnson is a good choice as nickel corner, but it’s clear he simply cannot deal with being constantly picked on since no QB in his right mind throws at Asomugha unless he has to. I think Haden can handle it and it gives us a very good nickel option in CJ. Routt can be demoted to dime/depth or let go entirely. Everybody wins.
We need offensive line help but this is a VERY deep draft at OT and guard and there will still be very good options available in the second and third rounds.

Draft
OT, OG, CB, MLB are the biggest needs. Get another tall corner: Joe Haden fits the bill. However, Brandon Spikes and/or Rolando McClain and/or a rush linebacker would be good. Another reason for the secondary issues is the pass rush. Better pass rush=less stress on secondary (CJ, Routt).
Wait, crap. That means Crazy Al will draft Dunlap. Oh no…
Second Round OL
Day 2: MLB, WR (never hurts), FB, more OL (not in this order).

just wondering
are we all willing to get a Defensive player rather than a QB? I know we feel comfortable with gradkowski, but i’m just wondering.

I think we've all came to the conclusion
that a QB early in the draft is bad bad bad, did I mention it’s a bad idea?

gradkowski has shown some positives so far.

I will continue to say it
Rd 1 – Bruce Campbell, Russell Okung, Trent Williams (I am fine securing RT w this pick)
Rd 2 – Carlos Dunlap, Brandon Spikes or Everett Williams (USC DE) whoever falls
Rd 3 – Jevon Snead (if he falls this far)

i think before we talk about the draft
we have to see just how confident the raiders feel about bruce. Gradkowski, who relied on his mobility a lot, will be coming off an injury involving two hurt knees. I think if Cable isn’t back, Gradkowski is probably out as well.
That being said, I would like to see the raiders draft a RT with their first round pick and hope one of the six QBs projected to go in the first round fall to us in the beginning of the 2nd. I also wouldn’t be very opposed to drafting a CB early, considering the age of our CBs.
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

im not 100 percent convinced about Suh
everyone is looking at him as a sure superstar, but remember Glen Dorsey from LSU. this guy was a straight beast and right now hes sucking it up for the Chiefs. DT’s are never sure picks in drafts, BJ Raji is playing alright but hes not dominating like I thought he would be.
by mekanikal on Dec 24, 2009 12:01 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Suh is the best and he's a lean 305 lbs getting half of his 26 tackles this season for lost yards
more than twice as many as Terry Cody who is very fat (365). I would definitely take Cody but prefer a leaner DT but still carrying weight – they only get bigger after college. So, since we’ll never get Suh and might not get Cody, I’m looking at Odrick – a lean 296 – who matches Suh for tackles for lost yardage. Brian Price is a fat 300 but surprisingly quick – not sure about him. I like McCoy a lot, a lean 295 lbs very quick and had 18 tackles for lost yardage this season – but he will go fast also. That’s why we should look hard at Tyson Aluala, 290 lean, quick and draftable.
