Russell by the numbers ($ not stats)

Andrew Brandt has a detailed look at why Russell would still cost us $40 Million total even if cut him. The article is a good read broken down yearly by the numbers.

Total cash committed

At the end this relationship, which probably can’t come soon enough for the Raiders, they will have paid Russell the following:

2007: $2.976M
2008: $20.27M
2009: $13.105M
2010: $3M*

*Guaranteed, even if released.

There you have it: $39.4M in cash committed with a potential $18M cap hit for a player it appears the Raiders can’t purge soon enough.

It’s hard to believe there’s ever been so much paid for so little.

Russell should be financially secure for life as well as his family. But he may soon have to declare bankruptcy on his career.

If you read the article it explains how it's an $18M cap hit due to salary advances.

Thanks for the link mike

you’re right it’s a good read. This off-season could be wild and I just hope the Raiders take advantage of the situation.

this will still cost AL 60 mill

even if cut, al losses not only the 40mill but how about all the fans and money they bring to home games not showing up. i believe russells last game as a starter the colosium had around 30000 fans, and bruces second home coming against wash. 44000+, so russell is costing mr davis a lot of money in a few different areas! hes gotta go, if he starts the last game against balt. i bet there wouldnt be 20000 fans there, and thats being generous!

Russell's last start the attendance was 40,720 against the Chiefs

Gradkowsi’s start against the Redskins the attendancee was 44,506.

I don’t think there is any question that the fans who go to the home games are just like most Raider fans in that they don’t like Russell.

Just imagine how many people would show up if the Raiders were good with an actual professional quarterback. Hopefully next year the Raiders will have one.

With such a monumental waste, and the estimated residual losses from non-attendance

You’d think even the most stubborn of folks would learn their lesson.

But probably, no such luck here in Raider Nation.

I'm sorry everyone

I found the article interesting, I didn’t stop and consider it would just fuel the hatred of him seeing this in black and white.

how was he in college?

I know since he was a #1 draft choice that he HAS to have been good, but what r your thoughts?

by patriotguy on Dec 19, 2009 8:27 PM PST reply actions

It is almost certain there will be no agreement this year

so in all probability the Raiders can cut Russell this off season, and only take a $3. million hit as opposed to paying him another $9 million, a no brainer. Most teams are looking for a non agreement year to unload their bad choices also. It has turned out to be a catastrophic choice but the Raiders have needed a QB for 5 years, unfortunately they had the pick in a bad year to draft QB’s, doubt that Quinn would have been a better choice, it doesn’t look like much either.

Did you read the article?

It would cost us 18 million to release him.

Mangini is screwing Quinn like we screwed Walter.

$3 million if uncapped year, $18 if capped

Great link mike. If we cut him next year the cap charge will be $18 mil, but that’s accelerating money he’s already been paid, it’s just accounting, he’s not making more money. If 2010 is uncapped, it won’t matter. This is what the owners want because, though alot is made of Jamarcus’ situation, which is the worst, most every team is throwing away a ton of money on these high priced Rookies that don’t produce. They’re everywhere. It’s time to clean house, an uncapped year to change the system. In that scenario the cap number won’t matter and we’re really only on the hook for $3mil. GREAT!……………..
But……. Maybe we need to keep him. I know he stinks, but think about it. He’s already pocketed $40 million Raider dollars for playing a year and a half. That is not going to change, money’s in the bank. If we cut him, $40 mil for 26 games. We can keep him another year for 7% of the total contract and hope and pray for the biggest epiphany in the history of the NFL. After paying him so much, it could be worth it to hold out hope for an awakening. But, it’s hard to argue against cutting him…….. But, He’ll be 25, still young. If he loses 25 lbs this off season, we’ll know there’s a chance. If he’s still fat, gotta go. I know his role model/uncle Ray Ray Russell died this year, maybe it derailed the kid, don’t know.

Not to mitigate that. It is a bummer to ever lose a loved one, but you would think he would want perform better in his honor.

Yeah

I was thinking about this last night, everyone uses that as his excuse of bad play. My condolences to Jamacus because thats a terrible feeling.

However, Brett Favre lost his father then came to Oakland and shit kicked us all over the place on our own field.

Nobody cares if the writing is in capitals

It’s like yelling and you’ll heard about every time for a few people. It doesn’t have to be a fucking report you would hand in high school, but some decent grammar and punctuation is nice.
