I cant say I ever really gave Coach Cable a chance. I have always been a fan of well established coaches, I can actually watch a Patriots game to this day and appreciate the genius of Belichick. I loathe Tom "the tuck (*)" Brady and the New England Patriots, but I respect the coach. I would've rather swallowed razor blades than watch Joe Montana and the 49ers win super bowl after super bowl in the 80's, but I thought Walsh was a step ahead of every defense he played. This all said, I like Cable now. I've watched him through trial and tribulations over this year and step up unprepared last year, and I do respect him. He's just in over his head. We lose games because sure players dont produce here and there, but we also lose games because of our coaching. You are only as good as your last game, so lets talk Browns.
Its a new wound, but its very similar to the continued problems the Raiders have. The offensive line is not protecting, sure but who's offensive line is it? Thats Cables specialty. However, over the last 2 weeks the line has made holes big enough for a back to average 5 yds a carry (Michael Bush). So, why in a close game do we stop giving the ball to Bush again? We only gave up 3 points in the 3rd quarter in a game that we we're within a touchdown for most and Bush averaging 5 yds a carry gets one carry in the second half. Thats a coaching decision. You want to stop people from sacking our Quarterback, run the ball and set up the play action pass. You will stop the blitzing and the pressure. Sure Frye threw 3 interceptions, then why are you passing 45 times and only running 17 times (again in a game that wasnt a blow out). I almost threw a cold and expensive beer threw my 40 inch Sony t.v. when Cable decided to pass the ball 4 downs on the goal line. 2 of the passes were almost picked off and he still decided to pass 2 more times. The other thing is, why did Cable take the running back out of the equation and put the quarterback in shotgun and a spread offense, so now the defense isn't even thinking run on the goalline. Why not have the backs set in the I formation, let the defense think run (with a 250lb rb threatening Michael Bush) and then play action pass? It would have the defense questioning the play and on their toes for either run or pass.
Michael Bush once again started out hot. Gaining 50 yds on 9 carries during the first half. Second half, 2 yds on 1 carry. Bad coaching. Why not give him 20 carries, he'll get the 100 yds and set up the play action pass. Do you think with 4 carries on the goalline Bush would've have scored? I dont know, but I like the chances more than 4 pass plays (with a guy who already threw 2 picks).
Penalties! I'm not going to elaborate, because there were some questionable ones from the refs, but ultimately comes down to the coaching. Our guys have to know we have a target over our heads, so we cant continue to give the refs a chance to take the game from us (*the tuck). We could have used the 133 yds worth of penalties in this close game.
I like Cable now, I respect him now, but I no longer want him as our coach. Ask yourself this. Lombardi, Madden, Walsh, Holmgren, Bellichick. Is Cable going to suddenly become one of these guys? Can Cable out smart other coaches like what it takes to bring a team to the Super Bowl? Liking someone and respecting someone doesnt win Super Bowls, Im sorry. It's certainly not winning us any regular season games. Bush has been our best back over the past year. He's gotten us our last 3, 100 yd games. The Coaches decision is this, he only gets most his playing time if either of the other running backs is injured. Thats just bad coaching. He's been OUTcoached again, its time for the Coach to be OUT.
