Raiders Defense To Simple
Traditionally the Raiders play man-to-man defense with with a single high safety, a four-man rush and little blitzing.
I've said this is part of the problem. If we start opening the play book on Defense like against Philly and Cinci we win games. We have the players on defense to do it. See my post bout the defense steeping up here. The Raiders have allowed an NFL-worst 54 plays that have gone for at least 20 yards, with 15 coming on the ground and 39 through the air. Oakland has also had 79 plays go for negative yardage, one shy of league-leaders Minnesota and Philadelphia, making the Raiders defense an all-or-nothing affair."We're a team that chooses to be who we are regardless of who we're playing against and regardless of the matchups or the things that the other team is going to present,'' Asomugha said Wednesday. "We've got one way of doing it and that's what we do, and teams can get us into some tough situations.''
Asomugha said he gets a little jealous when he talks to former teammate Charles Woodson about all the different defenses the Green Bay Packers run. He cited an interview by New Orleans coach Sean Payton, who credited his team's defensive turnaround with taking some of the best parts of what many teams do. And he lobbies the coaches so much for those type of changes that they laugh at him when he keeps bringing it up. He said simplicity in itself is not always a problem, citing the success the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had earlier this decade running the Cover 2 on almost every play. But the Raiders apparently don't have the talent to succeed that way.
"Maybe we don't want to be as multiple as other guys, maybe we don't have to be,'' Asomugha said. "We have to prove that we're good enough to win and play well doing the simple things that we're doing. We're not proving that right now. It's not like we proved it last year or we proved it the year before. This is several years now where we haven't been able to get over the hump of winning more than four or five games a year. Maybe you go back and you think about what we're doing and think about ways to fix it.''So we've had other players come out and criticized the Raiders after they have left for not wanting to blitz and Al Davis taking the blitz out of the plays. But it's been proven when we blitz we win. Even with Kiffin last year, had Ryan not gone into prevent D we would have won the Buffalo game and maybe a couple others. A change in defensive coordinator this season from Rob Ryan to John Marshall has done little to change the problems on defense. The system the team runs is still basically the same one that owner Al Davis has always preferred. But when he let's it happen, we win or come close to winning the game. This is what the game is now.
"The game changes, the game is never going to be the same as it was 10 years ago or five years ago with the rule changes and things like that,'' Asomugha said. "You have to be able to adapt.''We've all been saying this. The game is not the same as it was.

Adjustments have to be made
nothing radical but going to a 3-4 D. We would only need to find a nose tackle like Kinlaw was, we have two decent DEs and we could see how things go with 4 LBs. Our current LBs aren’t Martin, Hendricks, Nelson and Millen, but they are quick. Look, our DEs right now are miserable, especially their pass rushing, and the defense is on the field so much because teams rack up first downs against them.
Offensively, we start pulling guards and blocking angles because these guys can’t cut it straight-up one-on-one so they need an edge. We keep the FB to block the first guy who comes through, let Grad deal with the right flank he can rollout or tuck it and run.
Cable needs a six-pack of Red Bulls before the game after a Pete’s coffee enema.

Adjustments
One was finally made with Trevor Scott starting at weakside linebacker this week.
To make room for Scott, Thomas Howard will start at strongside linebacker after starting every game of his career on the weakside.
Scott has tinkered with the Elephant position made best known by George Seifert’s 49ers in the late 80s with Charles Haley. In it, he takes a two-point stance from anywhere in the line and either rushes the passer or drops into coverage.

great as pass rushing, pretty suspect in coverage, horrible at stopping the runner
whether as a lineman or backer. He has a better chance to shed a block getting a free line at the ball carrier though, For now, let’s hope it’s just the qb when he’s lined up there.
Interesting adjustment, but nowhere close to what Nnamdi’s hinting at. That guy’ll be a great coach in this league someday.

LMAO! Cable's a sedentary bastard, isn't he!!!?!
I like your answers to moving the football, I find myself doing that shit every time our defense stops the other teams offense and gives us a chance again, and then…

scott reminds me of hendricks
urlacher is too unique. If they go too big with all the linebackers they lose coverage and agility, if they go too small… well they can’t go any smaller.
An A+ defensive tackle would make everyone look better. It would even make that “simple” defense look unstoppable.

Maybe it's subconcious, I've done it twice this week
writing DEs when intending DTs. So, for the record, our DEs are decent..

You have a point,
it all depends on the definition of ‘mistake’. Perhaps, I was hasty in my self-criticism

you see yourself as spokesman for the Raider Nation. Cockroaches have levels of survival that they are willing to accept too. But, fortunately the true Raider spirit lives on and its comfort zone is considerably higher than a cockroach’s.

I would do whatever the fuck Nnamdi says, because he is right
Woodson is on fire right now because of the playbook their defense is executing right now. Nnamdi would have ten picks and even CJ and the backers and safeties would be in on the game. We still need to address some holes on defense, but if we mixed up the play calling to create more pressure, especially to match the opponent as Nnamdi pointed out. we’d have success against all the teams in league.
This is why it will suck so bad to lose this kid someday if we do, but I’m almost wish it for him if we’re going to continue to be forced to run vanilla offenses and defenses that don’t unleash the talent of our youth.
We can only hope Marshall is allowed to mix it up enough to give these guys the chances to make plays, and convince Al we need to continue down that road. When he is given freedom, we see them stifle the best of qb’s, coordinators, and offenses.
That’s why Thanksgiving killed me. We could’ve crushed the Cowboys; instead, we get that sorry excuse for a game. Even without much offensive success, we should’ve been able to give Romo nightmares, create turnovers, and control their trio of backs.

yeah
our defense is loaded with talent yet its not showing up on the field.
its pretty clear now even after rob ryan is gone the defense is still vanilla. Al davis is always the constant.

way too loaded
to not be leading the league in turnovers, pressures, passes, defensed, and sack and forced fumbles.
Charles Woodson? If he’s getting it done still, it’s proof calling the right plays is a bigger factor in today’s game. Don’t get me wrong; Charles has mad skills, and always has, but he’s at least a couple of steps slower than Nnamdi and even Revis, but coaches haven’t yet realized…

Thanks for that, Mike
That guy’s voice carries some serious weight in this league, and he has already earned the reputation of being an extremely intelligent and cerebral player, and well spoken to boot.
It’s interesting, because he was very cautious about how he answered, while getting his point across effectively as well.
I hope that move for Scott and Howard doesn’t end up a disaster. Once again, I ask, can it get worse? He’s a liablitiy in coverage, and we definitely don’t need another backer unable to shed blocks in the run game. Just be competitive this time. Those two games you saw it from the first plays on defense, and they kept it up both games for 60 minutes. I think it’s evidence that the reason the players a lacking the confidence is they don’t have confidence in the system. They had a different personality in the Cincy and Philly games, but definitely in that Philly game. You had the feeling this defense would be dominant for the rest of the season.

If they would just keep opening the game book.
we’ve seen what our D can do, but for some reason they’re not letting them do it. If we blitz like a bunch of wild bulldozers this week we really do have a change against the Steelers.
