Ask Hogs Haven: Your Redskins Questions Answered

Silver and Pride,
Is the party still going from strong from the win over the Steelers? I am the SB Nation writer for the Redskins at Hogs Haven. If you have any questions regarding the Skins for the upcoming game this week, fire away and we'll answer them for you. Some news. Portis was just added to the IR and all the talk from his radio appearances is that he might be hanging up the cleats for good. Bitter sweet for Redskins fans because he was work horse, but his explosiveness has been noticeably gone the last two seasons and the the backups have played better the 4 weeks he has been out. Our IR list for this year includes 4 Pro-Bowlers:

Chris Cooley, Chris Samuels, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Jarmon, Eddie Williams, Ladell Betts, Chad Rinehart, Chris Horton, Randy Thomas, and Colt Brennan.

Raiders are one of the best with only 2 players on IR (Jon Alston and Ricky Brown).

Fire away with your questions.

some questions

1.i know u guys have an outstanding defense for a 3-9 team. especially ur pass defense. for all the money uve paid albert hanyeworth, do u think he is worth it?
2.are u going to be able to stop the run?
3.do u expect jason cambell to have another great game?
4.how is your running back situation?, with 2 on IR, who is gonna start?

skins

1.) Skins paid Albert a $40 mil bonus, so for that to be “worth it,” Albert needs to play 13+ games at least 2-3 years. From this year’s standpoint, he has been worth it. It’s so ironic though that the two games Albert couldn’t play (sprained ankle) where against our most hated rivals, Philly and Dallas…and we BARELY lost. You pay big guys to play in big games, but any Skins fan will tell you we love Albert. We didn’t trade any draft picks for him which is what we care about and is something new for Dan Snyder (traded a #2 and #6 for Jason Taylor and he left after 1 year).
2.) Absolutely. Haynesworth clogs up the middle big time allowing the LBs to fly. Expect to hear London Fletcher’s name a lot. He already knocked Westbrook out for the year and his hit on DeSean Jackson caused him to miss a game. Skins are good for giving up 1-2 long runs, but overall they should be OK.
3.) I think he will do good. The Skins simplified the play-calling for him and it’s showing. Before he had to call the play and formations and plays based on keywords and now they gave him the wristband. Only took 4 years for these knuckle head coaches to figure that out.
4.) Quinton Gaither will get the start and the majority of runs. He’s done pretty good, but it was a bit of shake up here since Rock was the starter and had been playing well. The Skins only added Gaither in October. He used to play for the Skins Off Coord Sherm Smith in TEN.

DeAngelo Hall is still questionable for Sunday. He said his knee is feeling “80%”. His return to Atlanta earlier this year was unimpressive to say the least as he missed a tackle on Michael Turner for a long TD.

Fletcher

his fucking knee hit Westbrook in the head. That doesn’t count as knocking someone out of a game. Fucking knee - Head. Not cool bro…it now looks like Westy might hang up the cleats after this season

He's beaing eased back in

and Reid has not ruled him out for Sunday.

yea, my bad....

Forgot about it being his knee.

Are you ready?

Are you? Are you ready for the royal ass wooping Oakland will be handing out? Have you ever heard of a guy named Michael Bush? If not, get ready to hear his name quite a bit. Im expecting him to have a great game. 110+ Yds with a TD.
Its too sad to see Clinton maybe end his career this early. He had a bright future. And if Michael Westbrook retires, say farewell to a great NFL HB. He was a amazing back, recieving, blocking and obviously running.

I think we we should be careful

w/ the trash talking. We haven’t won 2 in a row yet. Crow doesn’t taste good.

HaHa

Its not really trash talking…Its mild humor mixed with a tad of confidence and competivness. But, Alberts out and so is Clinton Portis and Chris Cooley. This is looking like a good game for the Raiders. But, shit happens. It will be a good game. Im just hoping that Tom gives the ball to Bush more.

I bet

Al is feeling confident in his old Man scheme. I hope we dont go vanilla again!!

Yeah we can't talk smack

They scored 30 points on a undefeated team we never scored that much remember its 11 points a game still.

I didn't mean it that way

I mean we can’t get ahead of ourselves yet. We had some great come from behind victories, but we need wins where we’re ahead from the get go and never look back. And we need to close games. We tend to slack off when we’re ahead even by 3. I’m just saying, let’s not get to excited yet.

How has Campbell been?

Is it his fault for the struggles?

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"

by dubzfan on Dec 9, 2009 10:50 PM PST reply actions

Tough question

For the most part, no. The Skins have one of, if not the, worst offensive lines last year after losing Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas. Then they drafted ZERO offensive lineman last year. It’s a touchy subject in DC b/c Vinny Cerrato and Dan Snyder refuse to draft OLinemen. The last first round pick on one was 10 years ago with Samuels.

The thing is, Campbell has played extremely well except in the final moments of the game where the Skins are tied or within 6 points. For some reason he makes bad decisions (throws) with the game on the line. We’re all keeping the faith though b/c Campbell has showed a huge amount of courage with everything the front office did to screw him over (Cutler and Sanchez drama) and then his ability to take shot after shot in the pocket and still get back up and play. The team has definitely improved the last 4 weeks and the Skins are fun to watch for a change.

Dan Snyder has already flown to Texas and Southbend to watch Colt and Clausen play…so, it’s going to be an ugly moment when he drafts one of them and the OLine has still not been addressed.

Your Defensive Middle is stronger with Fletcher and Haynsworth

do opponents adjust running attacks for these two? How do you explain your problem with the run?

tackling

The tackling in the secondary has been atrocious, specifically DHall, Carlos Rogers, and Laron Landry. So the running on the outside for what should be 3-4 yard gains turn into 15-20.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 10, 2009 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

It be sad

Too watch Colt McCoys talents waste away behind a woeful O-Line. It be David Carr in Houston all over again.

Breaking News

Haynesworth is out for Sunday’s game. Awesome….ugh.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 10, 2009 10:34 AM PST reply actions

That's disappointing news

I wanted to see him play and Oakland to defeat Washington with its full complement. At this point in our season, it’s not just about the wins but more about how we are playing and being coaching.

The odd thing is...

Haynesworth said he’s out, but Zorn said he’s not definitely out. Very odd.

Skins O Line

You mentioned that the Skins line has been a bit shaky. Would your biggest concern for the game be the Raiders pass rush (with Richard Seymour, Trevor Scott & Greg Ellis/Matt Shaunasey)?
And how do you see the Skins recievers matching up against the Raiders secondary?

by KiwiRaiderFan on Dec 10, 2009 12:11 PM PST reply actions

Well...

It was shaky all the way up to week 8, then Levi Jones was added and Joe Bugel really tore them one for playing so poorly (though most of the line was undrafted free agents). The Skins have gone against some of the best DLines in the league in ATL, DAL, PHI, and NO…and held up well. So, I’m not too concerned. Seymour has been a force, but at worst they keep a RB back to chip.

I don’t know much about your secondary, but the Skins have been doing A LOT of short passes, so how does your D handle slants and screens?

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 10, 2009 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

With Portis and Betts out

Expect the Raiders to play a lot of nickel and dime packages. Your coaches are going to want to try and match up Moss or Randle El against Stanford Routt, because he is the weak link. I’m assuming with Cooley also out, there won’t be as many throws to the TEs?

by rightnasty on Dec 11, 2009 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

Fred Davis

He’s been playing pretty well replacing Cooley.

great point, he has

Devin Thomas has shown flashes of excellence his last 2 games, so hopefully that continues.

for fantasy purposes...

what kind of RB is Ganther?

I think if hes a speedy-ish cutback type runner I think he might be able to have a good game, but if hes a slow, power back, hes looking at 15 carries for 40 yards…

I have a problem with Ganther because…
1) he’s been cut twice this year
2) the much more skilled RBs ahead of him on the depth chart didn’t have that much success anyways

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
