Where do we stand?
The Oakland Raiders have made quite a few moves this offseason in terms of coaching staff, making Tom Cable the guy as Head Coach after assembling a team of assistants that both the coach and the owner is satisfied with. The big questions are going to come in terms of the on the field product, namely at a few major question mark positions and units.
Firstly, I have to ask about the outstanding free agents that were Raiders last year. The biggest names: Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler. No doubt about it, the most important yards in football are the C.O.P yards that come after a punt. With a good net yard average, a punter can be the best weapon a defense has (though technically, operating on the offensive end). I said all of that to say this: we need to be concerned about signing him, even if it's the franchise tag with the promise of a long term contract to come. Continue our special teams tradition. Keep that position constant.
That isn't to say that we don't sign Nnamdi. In fact, if we don't, we'll have made the worst mistake since...well...ever. I really am strongly against missing out on him, simply because without hyperbole, he is the best corner in the league. With the recent signing of Chris Johnson, the Raiders have a chance to solidify a strength. That would allow us to not have to focus on corners in the draft.
Considering our weaknesses, the needs of the Oakland Raiders stand as follows (my opinion, obviously): first and foremost, Offensive Line, namely the tackles. While Mario Henderson did play well with his time, the best case scenario for him is that he starts at Left Tackle and protects Jamarcus' blind side adequately. That does leave our right tackle position somewhat up in the air, considering how many penalties our tackles amassed last year...I'm not enthusiastic about leaving the tackle prospects as they stand.
Secondly, we need a force at linebacker in the middle. I know that people are going to be upset with that statement, considering Morrison is a good player, but I think with a beast in the Middle, that could push him to the outside, giving us a really really good core of our defense. I'm thinking about Maluaga from USC in here, but that's if he drops or we don't package Routt for another first rounder or early second (pipe dream alert).
Thirdly, and this is a major weakness last year, and most certainly needs to be addressed either through free agency or the draft: Wide Reciever. Our young guys are good, and I'd like to see at least Drew Carter and Ashley Lelie return, but if we have an opportunity, I'd like to take a run at Houshmanzadeh from Cincy, but failing that, draft either Michael Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin.
With any luck, this offseason will be a time to shore up some serious weaknesses and build on our strengths. But for the comments, where do you think our greatest strengths are? Our biggest weakness? Places where a little improvement will make a huge difference? Let it out here.

Oddly Enough:
Shields and Carter were the two receivers that gelled the most with J-Russ last summer. Then they BOTH got injured!!! Ouch!
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

Everyone talks about the Raiders
signing Nnamdi as if it is totally in control of the Raiders. If Nnamdi doesn’t want to sign then it is a moot point. Al has always been generous with the money for players so it will not be as if Al will not offer top dollar, it just might be that Nnamdi wants out. Al has always put importance on the secondary, a lot of first round picks squandered for DB’s. Let’s just hope that Nnamdi will be willing to sign for a lot of money.
As I have said many times I believe Morrison should go outside and the Raiders should get a difference making MLB.

That’s the truth, I believed we needed him outside when I realized that Williams wasn’t good enough (even though he’s an alum to my college, I faced the truth with him early). Of course we probably don’t move him outside at all, and if we don’t then I hope we get a decent to good OLB to work opposite him.

I don't really care about the defence at this point
We need to protect Jamarcus, and we need a big play receiver to keep the defences honest and not stuffing the box
Arent you guy’s tired of the “three and outs”?
Defence can be addressed next year

No
We are a few defensive players away from winning the division next year. The Offense needs veteran lineman we are too young on Offense, our rushing attack will take care of the scoring.

Remember that a great defense
can make up for some serious offensive deficiencies.
Remember 2000 with B-more? I think with a few more pieces on the line, and a good safety next to Gibril, we could easily have a defense that hurts you and helps the offense by leaving them with slam dunk field position. Most important pieces of the game, defense and special teams, they work as a unit to give the offense slam dunks, you know?

Plus we don't need a punter who makes more than the coach

Except that Shane
is the best player we have right now and he’s deadly w/ the ball. How many times has he put it right on the 1 yard line or inside the 5?

But.....
I do agree w/ you that he’s not the top priority to sign. Nnamdi should be. Sadly, I think neither will.
Now. I blame this in Davis. HEAR ME OUT PEOPLE BEFORE YOU TRY TO CRUCIFY ME!!
Al Davis is the GM. He makes all the executive decisions. Cuts and signs players. He should have cut Sands or at least penalized him for punching Shane in the face on the plane ride home. Also, he made the decisions that made Nnamdi actually want to meet and talk w/ him. And it doesn’t look like anything has changed his mind. So we’ll lose him, going into the uncapped year. So now 2 of our best players probably won’t stay w/ us long term because of things that happened due to decisions Davis has made. Whether it be hiring in experienced coaches or being to stubborn to keep good coaches.

You are speculating again...
You are only going by the media accounts for what they say happened with Sands. And you don’t know first hand whether or not Lechler wants to be in Oakland or not. If Al wants him and offers him enough, Lechler will be here. Al has a chance now to be the one who drafted the two greatest punters in NFL history.
Regarding Nnamdi. It’s purely a business decision. Nnamdi may sign or he may not, but he won’t be lost for nothing. If the Raiders cannot sign him long term then they will trade him for something, as opposed to letting him walk for free. Nnamdi, according to his new agent Tom Condon, wants to see what his real value is on the open market, which “could” be the reason that Nnamdi does not sign long term with Oakland, not because of Al Davis.

Nnamdi
I think will get franchised. No way AL would let someone who is worth so much slide away. Shane might stay. I think we treated him well and he will stay. I can almost guarantee, ALMOST, that Nnamdi will stay.

tag and trade?
nnamdi’s value is probably not gonna get much more higher than it is now…

You want to trade...
the best non-special teams player on the team? We just went 5-11 and you want to get rid Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the leaders and obviously the best player on our team…..Please, explain the logic of this if you dare. Money is great but look at what we spent on DeAngelo Hall, Javon Walker, and Kwame Harris…….compare money to results. We know what we got with Nnamdi and letting him go would be a horrible mistake.

No
Our rushing attack will result in minimal gains or losses, if other teams know our passing game has only a 1 in 4 chance of compleating the pass. And with 9 men in the box, we risk our excellent runners(and Jamarcus) being injured.
Jacksonville tried that same philosophy last year and it didn’t work. They didn’t have a big play reciver who could get open
I know DEFENCE is what got us our 3 previous superbowl rings. But we have(almost) the tools to build a offence that will march down the field on ANYONE, at ANYTIME!
Jeff Gordon might be the best driver of all time, he may have the best car in the race, but without his pit crew he would never win a race
I belive we are 2 years at best away from seriously challenging for the Superbowl.
by that time, this years draft picks will learn the system and be able to contribute like Gallery

Gallery is considered a bust though
He was selected number 2 overall and is getting paid starting offensive tackle money. He now plays as the starting left guard. I agree with you on the offensive part because it really starting clicking at the end of last season and looked very promising against the Bucs’ great defense. We get some offensive tackles in there and we will be competing for winners of the division.

Al and Cable need to sit down with him
and work out a contract extention to lock him up for four more years. I belive Robert will emerge as a force on our line at lg.

I Do So Also
But Punisher is correct about how much a Guard should be paid. If he isn’t the line captain, which teams do have, he should not be paid that much money. Faneca is the only one who should be paid serious guard money. His presence turned the O-line of the Jets around. Now, if Gallery can do that, pay him. But, he is not a leader. Just a player.

yes your right
thats why he needs an extention, we redo his contract and pay him average guard money thru 2012. nows the time to lock him in

chazz and johnnie lee have alot of upside and working thier deals would be wise. Walker is not likly to renegotate, so we can only hope we can squeeze some production out of him.
This is why we need a GM.
