Trading down our #7 draft pick

We all know the importance of having impact players, but a high pick doesent nessesaraly mean a player will become a stud at that position. The Raiders have many needs to fill and not a lot of free agent spending money. Some of the most successful teams(New England,Pittsberg,Giants) built there teams without the benifit of drafting in the early rounds.
Judging by last years draft, there's good value for teams willing to trade down( Baltimore traded their first-round selection (8th overall) to Jacksonville for Jacksonville's first-round selection, two third-round selections, and fourth-round selection (26th, 71st, 89th, and 125th).

Last years draft set the record for most trades in any draft.
This could be a better way to address the teams needs.

Eagles picks?

I wonder if they would be interested at all.

I wonder

If we still had Crabtree on the board when our pick comes up we could probably work out a deal with them. They desperately need a playmaking reciver for Donavan to throw to. Philly’s needs are similar to ours except they need a power running back. The eagles traded out of the first round last year for Carolina’s second- and fourth-round selections (43rd and 109th), and Carolina’s 2009 first-round pick. They also traded down in the second

But would we do it….maybe

Only way I'd want more picks

is if we trade Nnamdi for a 1st. and a second or trading burgess, Curry, or Fargas for mid round picks.

I agree, we would need compensation if Nnamdi left.

But I wouldn’t want to play Pittsberg in the playoffs and that pick be guarding Santonio Holmes.

I agree If we could land a middle of the 1st pick

and get an extra 3rd and a 5th we should jump all over it.

Lets say we get the 13th pick. I used 13 since Washington is an impulsive team and no way the Donk’s or Bolts trade with us. It is worth 1150 points, the 3rd rounder same spot (77) is 205 while the 5th rounder (141) is 35.5. total that up and you get 1335. So say we also get there 3rd rounder in 2010 you add another 205 minus a few for it being a future pick and who arguments sake it adds up to 1500 points same as the value of pick #7.

We would now hold picks:
13-
39 – our 2nd
71
77
103
141
167
199
plus 2010 # 77

Now we would be able to add for instance let’s say:

13 – Brain Orakpo
39 – Duke Robinson
71 – Terrance Taylor
77 – Jasper Brinkley
103 – Ramses Barden
141 – OL
169 – DB
199 – ST

Now we addressed a lot of NEEDS and still come away with an extra 3rd for next year. The only flaw here is we ABSOLUTELY need Big Mario to continue his progression manning Jmarc’s blindside.

by Bud Light on Feb 16, 2009 5:57 PM PST reply actions

I Like That Draft

but I can guarantee you Orakpo doesn’t make it past Buffalo at #11. Why not just take Orakpo at #7 and trade back up into the 3rd round for the other players like we do every year (Henderson, Branch, etc.)

"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

I personally think we need 5 impact players

from this years draft and by trading down in the first round it will allow us to maximize picks knowing some won’t work out as planned.

by Bud Light on Feb 16, 2009 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

I Agree

More Picks da better. But i love B.J Raji.

Exactly, we also may want to consider..

Trading next years #1 because we probably forcast a top 10 pick next yearThe Dolphins or Giants may be interested(besides their first round picK they both also have an extra second rd pick).

You guys crack me up

Why would we trade down for more picks when we have a team full of young guys waiting for the opportunity of their lives they already have NFL experience. What we need are a couple of Defensive players and maybe 2 or 3 OL, no more. Lets not waist a valuable pick by trading down just to experiment with stupid Ideas.

So With The 7th pick

You will grab? There is Crabtree. Ok, but like you said, there is a whole bunch of young guys at this position so we sholud’nt go here. Right. We should get a linemen. Then, pay him huge money to go to RT. Yea. Trading down is logical whether you think so or not.

i don't know

i think the only way i would do that is for an extra first rounder this year. so that leaves philly or detriot only because they have the first pick in the second. but think about it if we traded with philly we would have a lot of choices at o line. then with the other pic we could take laurinaitis, cushing, maybin or even another o lineman. our coaches could do wonders with to talented o line guys.

What we need are a couple of Defensive players? Your assumeing Nnamdi is going to stay.
What about DE, DL, MLB, SS?

?

DE) Kalimba Edwards, Jay Richardson, Trevor Scott, Derrick Burgess,
MLB) Draft Rey Maualuga, Aaron Curry, or Brinkley
Safety) Tyvon Branch, Rashad Baker, Michael Huff

Defense

Wins championships, we need a hard hitting linebacker that can scare the crap of QB’s,RB’s and slot receivers, that will help eliminate the big gains in yardage that kill the Raiders on third down. DT, DE, and OT will also be good, but lets stop saying that we should trade down because we never trade down in the first round. There are too many OL,DT,DE, and LB in the top 10 that can instantly make an impact in the NFL in 09.

"THE RAIDERS DON'T REBUILD THEY RELOAD"

by raiderlalo81 on Feb 17, 2009 9:47 AM PST reply actions

we can trade down

In the 3,4, rounds for depth, that sounds a little more logical to me.

Unfortunately, the draft is a crap shoot

I read all this stuff about this guy or that guy who “can’t miss”,
but in reality a lot of those guys do miss. Everyone raved about Gallery when he came out, he is good but not all world. Huff was thought to be the best defender in the draft, how has that worked out? Last year Gholston was a “beast”, so far a complete flop, and Dorsey didn’t set the league on fire either. I think we drafted Trevor Scott in the 6th round, and he performed better than Chris Long with many fewer minutes. I love the draft as much as the next guy but so many of the high ranked players don’t turn out very well.
If the Raiders could trade #7 for another 1st, and a few other picks I am all for it. But I don’t delude myself into thinking that the guy is going to step up and immediately turn this franchise around and be a 10 year starter. I wish it would happen but experience tells me not to hope too much. There is a one or two year transition stage for most rookies not called running backs or receivers.

I argee

trading down provides your team with depth, and allows your team to manage the salery cap. Teams like Arizona and Pittsberg know this.

I didn't call Gholston a bust

I said “so far” he is a bust, and I didn’t call Trevor Scott a great pickup, I just said he had a better year than Chris Long. I don’t pretend to know how their careers will go, my only point is that the draft is an iffy proposition for short term success. There are so many draft picks that go 3 or 4 years contributing almost nothing, then a light clicks in and they become very good and productive players. Some guys start fast and fade faster.

Yeah

That would be an excellent signing, but we would probably have to pay him ( Under the Table)or Al will have to work a lil trade or some kind of move, cause right now we are a bit high on the salary cap.

Randy Moss aka T.O. the second selfishness is all i have to say. in this game its not needed and with our organization, you must remember all our great history we had no room for that everyone played as one unit and boldin is a team player just ask larry fitzgerald.

Would be a good idea

Trade down a couple of spots and maybe get another second or third rounder…..what does everyone think about the possibitlity of trading Fargas, i mean with mcfad and bush and ranken were more than capable of having a dominating rushing attack, plus we could use that second or third rounder we could get out of fargas! With those two ideas alone that could give the silver and black a few 2nd rounder and a few 3rd rounders to play with

by XxTwistedInkxX on Feb 19, 2009 4:31 PM PST reply actions

Justin is good enough to get us at least a third rounder

Philladelphia is a possibility, maybe Detroit.
As far as tradeing down I belive in the first 3 rounds all are potential stars.\
We need to bring in 7 or 8 players from the draft to key areas on our team (OL,WR,DL DE LB SS).
