UPDATED: Breaking News!! Nnamdi deal done!! League Approval Pending

Breaking News just in from SI.com:

Nnamdi deal done pending only league approval:

Nnamdi Asomugha and the Oakland Raiders are on the verge of a landmark contract that could bring the All-Pro cornerback $26 million, at least, in guarantees over the next two years, a source familiar with the negotiations said today.

Agent Tom Condon has forwarded the proposed contract to the NFL's Management Council for approval, which is usually the final step before a deal is finalized.

Asomugha, one of the game's top cornerbacks, will be franchised for a second consecutive year if the Management Council rejects the contract proposal. Teams have until 4 p.m. today to designate franchise players; the Raiders would use the tag on Asomugha to protect themselves from losing him in free agency without compensation.

The $26 million approximates what Asomugha would earn over the next two years if the Raiders used the franchise tag on him in 2009 and 2010. The deal is expected to be six years and include guarantees that would surpass what Asomugha would earn if he was franchised each of the next seasons.

According to the Sporting News.com the Raiders and Nnamdi are "closer and closer" to signing a long-term deal. I think the fact that the Raiders will not use the tag on Nnamdi means this deal is done!

If this deal occurs, this will be our best off season in memory and will certainly wipe out last year's miserable off season results.

The Oakland Raiders are "closer and closer" to signing Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a long-term contract, sources told Sporting News.

The Raiders could lock up Asomugha for next season by placing the franchise tag on him by today's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Even if the contract negations are not completed by the deadline, the Raiders are not expected to use the franchise tag, the source said, a clear sign that a long-term deal is near.

If tagged, Asomugha would be guaranteed $11.7 million, 120 percent of his '08 salary, for the 2009 season. If the Raiders sign Asomugha to a long-term deal, they could greatly lower his 2009 cap charge from the $11.7 million figure by including signing bonuses and roster bonuses into the contract.

Wow! that would really make my day

It would also show how little we should pay attention to the writers. All they ever write is how dysfunctional the Raiders are, how players are just waiting to leave, nobody wants to play here. If the Raiders can sign Nnamdi that would all be wiped out. The Raiders would not have to franchise any player and with some restructuring could possibly sign a valuable free agent. I think most agree that OL and LB are the most pressing need. Some banter about receivers I am not included in that. If they release Sands then another DL is necessary. I am hoping that the Raiders release Harris which they will, but offer him a contract back at a VERY reduced contract. Cable saw something in him but it never came out, but damn, he was a first round pick so there must be something there.

Ummm

oooookaayy. U want Harris? It better be CHEAP>

Yes, I meant very, very cheap

He does have talent, is quick on his feet, a guy who looks good but doesn’t play good. He has no where else to go I am sure, so I would like to see him brought in for another year with Cable, guard? right tackle? It is not like we are deep in offensive linemen.

He'd be a perfect fit at RT:

If he could only learn the snap count.

Burgess

There is also some rumors that the Raiders are shopping Derrick Burgess, who is in the last year of his contract. So, if that happens, you would need to add DE to your shopping list

I was wondering if the Raiders would part ways with Burgess

He makes a lot of money, getting older and although a good pass rusher, I don’t think he protects the run very well. If the Raiders could get a 5th rounder for him I think that would be fine. I like to see the team getting younger. If they do then it would show the Raiders like Richardson and Scott a little bit.

5 rounder.

nawww. 2 yes and 3rd maybe. 5th is too low.

There were some interesting details in that contract

I thought the last year was unique. Basically he will get paid the median of the top 5 QB’s.

is great! I like the fact that Aso has spoke his mind about the state of the Raiders and yet he is still staying and has a deal already.

A top end CB doesn't mean a good defense...look at Champ Bailey.

Crazy Al made the same mistake Shanny did by thinking he can bypass building the core of the defense by paying all the money he has to a corner. opps! Look for tough defensive times ahead.

How many people does Al Davis need to cut in order to get back under the cap for this mega-catastro, err, I mean deal?

The difference is that Nnamdi has been a Raider

his play has been seen, who cares about the money, I haven’t seen the contract but suspect that his first year cap space is low which allows flexibility for this season. No cap for next year so it is academic how much he gets paid in the 2nd and 3rd years. The simple fact is that teams do not throw towards Nnamdi, which effectively cuts down a 1/3 of the field, unheard of in the pro game. In all the years I have followed the NFL I have never heard of that much respect given to a corner. This signing in no ways limits the Raiders to get the help needed, either through free agency, or the draft. Spending a lot of money does not solve ALL problems, if that were the case the Raiders would have won the Super Bowl last season.

The Shanny ship has sailed...we are now learning how royally screwed he left us...

Bowlen has to pay out $20+ million to staff that no longer work in Denver this year. lol staff…not players.

Besides, 24-24 over three seasons and no playoffs just isn’t acceptable.

You can hope. :)

We were 8-8 last year with the worst defense on Earth…Lions don’t count. We can only go up defensively…our offense is still in tact. Count us out…8-8 again in 2009 will be a huge step forward as we transition into a Super Bowl contender. ;P

mmmm…koolaid tastes real good.

You’re right that your defense is terrible. And I don’t see them getting any better next year especially after getting rid of Bly.

We are cleaning house...

The only defensive starters that will likely be around for next year are Dumervil, Marcus Thomas, Champ, and DJ Williams. We can ONLY get better after last year. lol

Hopefully we’ll pick up G. Wilson…..we got the cap space(on paper anyway…lol).

Do you still love AL?

Cutting Wilson was foolish…but unavoidable, $50 mil for 3 years? puhlease! If Champ Bailey asks for that, I hope management says, “Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out”. $10-12 million is more than enough for an all world CB…

It's Al's fault for signing these guys

to ridiculous contracts. From watching contract negotiations I know that we could’ve got Walker, Wilson, and Hall to sign for much less than what they did. Al was just the crazy one that offered them such large amounts of money so they would play for Oakland. Releasing Wilson is stupid.

But I like to mention

Nnamdi is deserving of his contract, even though it is fucking us up right now. Shane’s contract is also a little high, but he is deserving also. Every year, we have some free agent come here to get us pumped for the season. This season might be different. But, every year, that free agent is a fuck up and does nothing to help the team. This year, we can get young talent who will become great on the Raiders. I just wish our cap space goes down and we can have structure when signing players. No more big money deals. But, Nnamdi and Lechler do deserve their money.

Deserving sure,

but players are only worth what teams are willing to pay for them. I think that kind of money for a DB is insane, especially since it handicaps your teams ability to maneuver around the salary cap. That being said, congrats to the you guys for keeping the best db in football. Have fun watching teams NOT throw to his side all year.

His leadership and commitment to tackling where why we picked him up

This is a bad move on our part. We should have let Shane go instead.
