Curry, Edwards and Wilson Released

Oakland Raiders Transaction Link -

I must say I am a little shocked we released G. Wilson. He had a good year and seemed very active in a leadership roll for the young guys. I have a hard time believing this is anything but a cap move. The option the Raiders currently have to fill that void is perhaps moving Branch over to SS.

Curry on the other hand...it's time to move on. He is little more then dead weight at this point in his career and we have too many young guys to keep any aging vets that are not realistic #1 and #2 options.

As for Edwards I am neutral. He was not a bad value and even had some descent play from time to time, but I believe I'm still getting over the Wilson shock.

Anyways I'm sorry if this is posted already.

Losing Wilson hurts.

He actually wanted to be a Raider. I hate to see him go. I hope he doesn’t sign with another AFC West team.

Wanting to be a Raider

I think this is an intangible that carries a ton of wait for losing teams. I think that was what surprised me the most. I’ll certainly echo I hope we don’t see him in the AFC West. BTW, any chance there is a restructure coming and releasing him was a first step? Well see.

More To Come I'm Sure

Releasing Curry comes as the least surprising of that group, given that he was due nearly $5 million next season. Losing Edwards isn’t a huge deal because the Raiders have youngsters Trevor Scott and Greyson Gunheim to fill in those nickel DE spots. Plus, they’re dirt cheap.

Releasing Wilson is tougher. Wilson had arguably the best season of his career for the Raiders, but even with 129 tackles the running game wasn’t shored up (not that it was his fault). However, Wilson was scheduled to make $7 million next season, and you’ve got to take some of the good with some of the bad here. Hey, everyone wanted to sign Lechler and Asomugha, but the cap money has got to come from somewhere. I guess you pencil in Tyvon Branch as starting SS for now, but this position just became a need through FA or the draft. I’m sure the Raiders didn’t close the door on Wilson entirely, but they’re at least nice enough to let him test the market before asking him to restructure his deal.

Next possible cuts may include: Kwame Harris (restructure candidate as much as people loathe the idea), Terdell Sands, Gerard Warren. Ugh, our DL is already so thin, it would be tough to lose both. Please restructure guys.

What? I thought Wilson was terrific last year

On the other hand I didn’t know he was due $7 million either. I have a feeling he will be playing in Oakland this year, he’ll get his money in a different way and then be back. If not, then we are hurting without a SS or FS.
I would expect Edwards to be back also, these kind of players are a dime a dozen, fringe types like Clemons last year. With so much money tied up in key players, rosters are filled up with rookies, or guys on the down side.
I am sure more surprises are on the horizon. Well, Al never has problems with the salary cap, just cut expensive players.

by Laoren on Feb 20, 2009 4:02 PM PST reply actions

From Jerry McDonald
Wilson was due a $2.5 million salary and had a pending roster bonus of $4.5 million. With a salary cap figure of $8.4 million and $7 million in pro-rated bonus money from his original signing bonus of $8.4 million, it the release cleared $1.4 million in cap space but will mean $7 million in dead money under the cap.

Curry, due $3.5 million in salary, had a $4.1 cap figure and $1.8 million of pro-rated bonus money for a $2.3 million savings.

Edwards, with a cap figure just under $3.2 million with $697,500 in bonus pro-ration, clears another $2.5 million from under the cap….

For now, tackle Kwame Harris, another 2007 acquisition, remains on the roster. Should the Raiders cut Harris, it would represent an $7.2 million savings against the salary cap.

Damn, cutting Wilson didn’t even save that much on the cap. Releasing Curry and Edwards saved a good bit though. Harris has to be released soon.

holy shit

g. Wilson’s departure now means our secondary and run defense are fucked.

I hope we pick up Wilson!

Let the salary cap hell reap the whirlwind Al Davis! Maybe Nnamdi can play CB and S at the same time…since he is being paid so much.

Sorry to rub salt on the wound, but you had to see this coming after the Nnamdi debacle. You need to clear $20 mil in cap space for Nnamdi and your upcoming draft picks…maybe even more than that. Yikes!

Is there such a thing as a Playstation 3 Anonymous? I can't seem to stop thinking about or playing COD 4 and COD 5. I hear this is quite normal for a teenager, but I haven't been a teenager since Bill Clinton was frolicking with interns.

i agree

with Oval Fan. this just might be the first step in restructuring his contract. there is no way Davis would let a player of this calliber go. he was a sure tackler. i just hope we can resign him. and i’m pretty sure htis won’t be possible but i’m just going to say it and see what you think. if we do cut g. warren and t. sands, maybe the money they free up can go to an Albert Haynesworth? doubt it.. but one can dream…

then we would need two more DT's

one to be a solid contributor and one to be rotation.

Hey

This makes the draft pick for the Raiders this year a whole lot more different.

So let's recap

Oakland now has needs at OL, DT, DE, WR, FS, SS, MLB. At one point it was only OL, DT, MLB, WR, and FS. DE wasn’t really a huge need but now that Edwards is gone we’re short one DE. So our secondary and run defense are both very questionable for nest year.

I Guess

The Raiders think Huff still got it and Hiram eugene at FS. But, Tyvon might get one of the safety spots and the free agency got some players.

Too soon to panic

You are writing your review for the movie before it ended. The roster is just starting to be structured and take shape in preparation for the free agency and the draft. We kept the players that were the “must signs”, now we will move on to other to fill the needs.

I am not thrilled about losing Wilson, but I think his loss is being a bit exaggerated. He was not great in coverage, and sometimes just sucked, he got burned a lot, he was not a beast in the box either. He was a good tackler, but I think we will overcome his loss.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

BTW, I agree with you

I was more shocked then disappointed although I’m still hoping for a restructure. In a lot of ways I think G. Wilson would be missed as much if not more as one of the more vocal leaders. Now all that sounds great but it probably does not warrent 7mil a year. My only other issue is what may be the new plan. I’m done with Huff and would much rather see one of the young guns give it a go.

I speaking of how it stands now

and Wilson was better than any strong safety we’ve had in a long time, top-5 in my opinion.

But as it stands now, these cuts leave us with more needs than what we originally and not very much more money to fill these needs. If we can get Wilson to restructure, then I’ll leave my angry dome, but not before.

It is a little too early to say what we need in the draft

Presumably the Raiders have a plan and an idea in what direction they are going. Cable has been quoted as saying he wants to clear out some guys who don’t want to buy into what the Raiders are trying to do. I think we are seeing from some of these moves who Cable believes are the future and who are not, who performed and who didn’t. Now if Wilson is resigned then it was clearly just getting away from the roster bonus payment. If not, then the Raiders were not happy with his production and play at the SS position. It also means that Baker, Eugene, Bowie and Branch are considered cheaper and better options, not to mention Miller and Huff.
It is really interesting watching all this play out. I think Harris’ contract will be restructured and he will stay, Cable is stubborn I think. He sees something in Harris that hasn’t translated onto the football field. I just don’t believe the Raiders can afford to dump Walker, too big a hit. Davis might be stubborn there also, hope that Walker will restructure his contract. I kind of thought Edwards would stay, not much of a saving releasing him but what do I know.

Looks like we need to learn this name ...

Saw him play

He’s pretty good. If we can get him we’d have a very good player on our hands.

This shit is getting old

Signing unproven players to big money. If this is the Raiders big plan from now on then we will never be winners again. Tommy Kelly, Kwame Harris, Javon Walker, Gibril Wilson, DeAngelo Hall, and i’m sure there is someone else I am forgetting, all got signed to more money than they ever dreamt of making. Kelly publicly stated he didn’t expect Davis to offer him that ludacris contract. Then he got a DUI a few weeks later and couldn’t stop the run all year. DeAngelo got three personal foul penalties in his first game as a Raider and was top 5 for getting burnt the most. Kwame Harris led the league in sacks allowed, false starts, and holding penalties. Javon Walker wanted to retire before the season even started and got mugged in Vegas. And for as much as I like Gibril, he was just a product of the Giants defense. He really didn’t do shit for pass coverage and wasn’t a “beast” in the box like expected. If we start signing players for what they are WORTH then we wouldn’t be in this salary cap predicament and having to release productive players like Edwards who was tied for the most sacks on the team.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

was ok. He disappeared mosyt of the time at games. He is successful off of his timing. It hurts him and helps him. He was an ok player.

Harris

To be fair, Kwame Harris wasn’t really signed to a “big money” contract. His deal was cheap for last year and was designed to reward him if he played well and the Raiders kept him beyond last season. Obviously that didn’t happen and he will either be released or have his contract restructured. All of the others you mentioned I don’t think qualify as “unproven players”, but the Raiders certainly overpaid to either keep them in Oakland or bring them to Oakland.

agreed

the players we signed weren’t “unproven”. most had Pro-Bowl seasons and had a lot of potential. They just didn’t meet expectations. True these were ungodly contracts, but they weren’t unproven.
