some names that have peaked my interest

With Scott gone possible LB FA prospects that I think Oakland should go after include:

Andra Davis
Mike Peterson (please sign him)

Is anybody else interested in Igor Olshnasky? he might want some hefty money, but he’s what we need here in Oakland. A full-time guy to play beside Burgess, if he’s still here when this is all over (I’ve heard his name’s being thrown around by Oakland)

I already posted that Marvel Smith and Barnes are on Oakland’s radar. Smith is #2 in Scout.com’s FA power rankings for OT. Landing him or Barnes would be big for us and would allow Oakland to pursue a defensive guy in the draft like Raji.

And Mason said to god, "May my clutch shots go in" And God said, "Yes. Yes they may my son"

My thoughts

Rumor has it that the Raiders will try to sign both Smith and Barnes. That would be two value signings and a huge upgrade over Harris and Greene. Too bad though the Raiders never got a chance to grab center Jason Brown as he immediately signed with the Rams, which could mean the Raiders will have to re-sign Grove.

There is also word that the Raiders will look at former Baltimore safety Jim Leonhard. He is small but he is smart and knows how to take correct angles, something Raider safeties have definitely lacked.

I’d love to get Igor Olshansky and Al usually likes taking from other AFC West teams so hopefully there’s a chance. Here are my other targets that I hope that the Raiders can at least get a few of:

C Matt Birk
RG Brandon Moore
S Sean Jones
DT Rocky Bernard
MLB Eric Barton
WR Drew Bennett
WR Laverneous Coles
RG Derrick Dockery
FB Lorenzo Neal
DT Tank Johnson
LB Cato June

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

by TheRaiderWay on Feb 28, 2009 7:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I like your thoughts

Barnes and Smith together would solidify our line (except for guard and center) I wouldn’t mind seeing Grove back, but I’d rather we draft Mack or Unger. Leonhard would be a nice safety, but I’d rather see Landry from Baltimore.

I like all your FA targets except for a few. I’m not a big Lorenzo Neal guy because we have O’Neal and Reece, both of which I want to see get some good time in. Not a tank Johnson fan either because I think he’d demand too much money and be too much of a character issue. Barton’s a nice name I hadn’t thought of.

Birk, Moore, and Dockery all would be huge additions for Oakland. I’d like Dockery more than Moore though. Jones is a name I just thought of and would definitely be a good fit in Oakland. I’d rather we get Bennett than Coles. Not because of talent, but because of money. Coles wants a long-term deal with good money. Cato June would be an ice add if Davis is set on Morrison being the man in the middle.

And Mason said to god, "May my clutch shots go in" And God said, "Yes. Yes they may my son"

Coles

may want a long-term deal with good money, but in this market he may not get it. As soon as the flurry of the first few days passes and the market settles, we will start to see some more reasonable deals. That is when the Raiders can smartly enter the market.

I only say Lorenzo Neal because of the uncertainty of Oren O’Neal and his reconstructed Knee. We may also bring back Justin Griffith if he proves to be healthy.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

by TheRaiderWay on Feb 28, 2009 8:18 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

true abot Coles

if we can get him cheap, I’ll be happy.

Neal would be nice if O’Neal’s knee is still banged up, but i think Reece and Lawton can make up for that if he can’t go for some games this season.

And Mason said to god, "May my clutch shots go in" And God said, "Yes. Yes they may my son"

by KA1Z3R on Feb 28, 2009 8:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Some thoughts on your thoughts

Birk would be a good addition at center, good experiece.

since we run a 4-3 in order for eric barton to fit (and remember he used to be in the silver and black) we would have to move morrison back to outside which wouldn’t be bad because he’s a powerhouse at either position as he’s proven, coles or bennett would be a nice veteren addition to help our young recievers to develop though i wouuld LOVE to get harrison there but that’s not gonna happen. and my opinion on lorenzo neal is even with our young FB’s he’s a powerhouse of a run blocker and pass blocker which means he would help our offense right away in both aspects.

Sean Jones would be a good safety?

another good safety

James Butler from Big Blue. Good coverage guy. Big frame at 6 foot 3 and 215 pounds makes him a solid tackler. Would be a cheap guy to boot.

Bryant Johnson

David White mentioned on his SFGate Raiders blog the possibility of Bryant Johnson reuniting with Ted Tollner. It’s pure speculation on White’s part, but not a bad suggestion. I for one lobbied for the Raiders to sign Johnson last season before he signed with the Niners. He’s Jerry Porter only younger and without as many of the personality flaws. The Raiders need all the depth they can get right now at WR, and Bryant Johnson is at least familiar with the passing system that Tollner will implement for the Raiders in 2009.

"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

Don't you think that

Johnson has problem with the dropsies? When I’ve watched Johnson, I’ve seen him drop some very catchable balls (kind of like Curry), and with Russell shooting lasers, I don’t know.

The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs in that trade that involved linebacker Mike Vrabel. It’s unclear what the Patriots received in exchange for them at this point.

Also, the New York Jets have traded a 2009 fifth-round pick and a conditional 2010 pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for cornerback Lito Sheppard.

scoop on cassel

they picked up cassel partly because thigpen wasn’t very effective in the run game, but if you look at the games that cassel played, he wasn’t very comfortable under center, all his success came from the shotgun which really isn’t the best for playaction due to the extra time the LB’s and safeties have to sniff it out. but either way i don’t like seeing cassel twice a year, after what he did to us last year…although we do have a soft spot for guys who lose their fathers before playing us, and that’s why he did so well LOL

Surprising news Rated-R-supaster

Chiefs really went crazy this off season. Also with the free agency, I wouldn’t mind having Eric Barton back on the team.

Chiefs went crazy

because they have huge cap room and a new GM. Denver is doing the same thing with all the cap space that they have too. Fortunately, the Broncos, with all that cap room have not done anything special.

In some other free agent news, the Saints re-signed offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb to a five-year deal.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh is going to visit the Vikings on Sunday. He met with the Seahawks on Friday, but they did not offer him a contract. At the moment, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, it looks like it’s down to the Seahawks, Vikings, or Bengals.

The Ravens will not match the Rams’ five-year contract offer for center and guard Jason Brown. ESPN’s John Clayton reports that the Ravens were $1 million to $2 million per year short in terms of matching the offer.

cassel

cassel had 3 good recievers in NE, other than bowe kc doesn’t have the down the field threats, and as great of a TE that gonzo is, he’s getting some age on him..and thigpen had quicker feet than cassel and still ended up on his back alot..if they put cassel under center he’s gonna see the sky in KC alot.

why not go with Grady Jackson. Not really great but he’s better than Terdell Sands as a run stopper. Massive body. And he has experience Oakland. Would be a very cheap deal and we’ve got nothing to lose.

I’m not sure if this trade has been posted yet.

The Cleveland Browns traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday afternoon. The Buccaneers received a 2009 second-round pick and a 2010 fifth-round pick.

The draft picks were originally undisclosed until ESPN’s John Clayton gave us details last night. Clayton also said that he wouldn’t be surprised if a few more names were traded by the Browns.

does the name Tom Nalen

grab anybody’s attention? True we hate him, but if Birk is gone, would you really be against bringing him in? Once an elite guy, he’s fallen off as of late so he should be cheap. He’s used to the ZBS and is a very balanced center.

how's about names like

Angelo Crowell
Willie McGinest
Morlon Greenwood

all are cheap OLB. Greenwood and McGinest would be good blitzers while Crowell would be a great leader to the LB corps who can play outside or middle.

Sheppard will receive $3 million in 2009, which is his scheduled salary, but he’s due a $10 million option bonus on the fifth day of the 2010 league year. That should force a re-negotiation or release, which will get Sheppard on the free agent market like he wants.

Donkey speak Donkey do...

We are lucky to have such an idiot playing for our rivals. 3 year old, I mean 3rd year QB Jay Cutler had this to say about his possible trade:

"We’ll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they’re not going to let me have that opportunity."
"I’m upset," Cutler said. "I mean I’m really shocked at this point. I could see why they want [Matt] Cassel. I don’t know if they think I can’t run the system or I don’t have the skills for it. I just don’t get it. Or if they don’t think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don’t know what it is. I’ve heard I’m still on the trading block."
Obviously, Josh and I’s relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don’t play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates.
"I know they love playing for me and I love playing for them," Cutler said. "There’s going to be a lot of problems if they try to trade me. Well, they’ve already tried to trade me, but if they trade me for sure."

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

some more intriguing FA

maybe Jovan Haye for DT? Larry Tripplet? I’m still hoping for Grady Jackson.

Still a lot of good S in FA including my fave Dawan Landry. But there’s still Jim Leonhard (Rated-R Superstar reports that Oakland’s interested in him) Lawyer Milloy would be a good addition. There’s still some elite vets in Phillips and Otagwe.

For people who want a TE to play with Miller who aren’t convinced in Strong, L.J. Smith is available.

If Oakland doesn’t land Smith or Barnes, there’s still some good FA like Mark Tauscher, Jon Runyan, or Tra Thomas.

Why are Mike Goff, Kendall Simmons, and Pete Kendall not getting talked about more as possible Oakland guards?

Olshansky, Spicer, and Chauncey Davis are still good FA that are available for DE.

so far I’ve been very displeased with our FA visits. I can understand if you wanna build the team in the draft, but at least bring some FA in. We’re not going to fix all of our problems in the draft. At least bring in some S to look at and at least consider. Hell bring in Dawan Landry, sign him, move branch to FS with Landry at SS, and trade huff for at least that fifth round pick so you can truly build a team in the draft. You can’t build a team in the draft without having at least 7 draft picks.

And Mason said to god, "May my clutch shots go in" And God said, "Yes. Yes they may my son"

somewhat agree

I would have to concur only in the fact that i can’t stand to think that we passed on matt lienhart or any of the other good qb’s that came out in that draft for a safety on a one year wonder championship run team. Huff had better prove we were THAT stupid for passing on a good qb that year that would have cost us less than jmac and would not have held out almost all of his rookie year.

I'm not quite giving up on him either

i can see some potential still left. But we would be much better at the position with Landry. Plus trading Huff could get us a fifth rounder at least, for some much needed depth at any of the many positions that need some quality depth.

Cowboys Cut Safety Roy Williams

Per nbcdfw.com

T.O. is not the only member of the Dallas Cowboys that was released Wednesday night. After seven seasons, safety Roy Williams is no longer a member of America’s Team.

The move should be no surprise to Cowboys fans since there has been heavy speculation that Williams would not be back for the 2009 season.

Williams confirmed the team’s decision to Newy Scruggs Thursday morning.

Williams was a first-round draft pick in 2002 out of Oklahoma and quickly became one of the most well-known safeties
Williams, who made five straight Pro Bowls, was sidelined much of the 2008 season with a forearm injury. In 2006, he signed a four-year contract extension with the team through 2010.

 .

That would be a great pick up, but I don’t think the Raiders will pay the price.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers have agreed on a restructured contract that will keep Tomlinson in San Diego.

Tomlinson approved the deal Tuesday night with the backing of club president Dean Spanos. Part of his 2009 salary was converted to a “signing bonus” to save cap room, meaning Tomlinson put his ego aside and will make a less salary than Darren Sproles. He’ll still get the full $6.725 million; however, Tomlinson’s 2010-2011 salaries are reduced, but he can earn the money back via incentives. He will be in more of a timeshare in 2009, but he’ll keep goal-line duties and could be undervalued in fantasy drafts.

According to the Denver Post and their account of Monday’s meeting between Jay Cutler and the Broncos, Cutler left the conference call believing he will be traded if Denver finds “the right deal” between now and the NFL’s draft.

In addition to head coach Josh McDaniels and owner Pat Bowlen, general manager Brian Xanders and Cutler’s agent Bus Cook took part in the discussion.

According to ESPN’s account of Monday’s conference call between Jay Cutler, his agent, and the Broncos, the situation went “from bad to worse.”

Reporter Bill Williamson says the sides are “now further apart than prior to (the meeting).” Coach Josh McDaniels reportedly refused to confirm or deny trade talks involving Cutler and Matt Cassel, although owner Pat Bowlen stated to Cutler that he “will not be traded.” Williamson says Cutler now would rather be dealt if Denver won’t commit to him long term.
