I'm very pleased with this hire
I suspect by tomorrow the DC and OC will be announced also, wouldn’t surprise me if they were in attendance. I liked listening to Cable’s post game conferences and his Monday press conferences, he was honest, succinct and never threw anyone under the bus, but was candid as to what was wrong. I have a real good feeling about Cable, but then again I am a glass half full personality. More importantly than anything is that Cable communicates with Al, by his own admission they agree, and disagree but he communicates, that is the important issue. I also liked that Cable wasn’t afraid to make changes, and in the final analysis he got the team to play for him. Now if we can get Hackett to properly train Russell, then we might finally have something.

laoren
everything you said is spot on. cable’s our guy and i really think he’s gonna be the one thats gonna turn us around. Look how we beat Tampa in the last week of the season….
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
That victory at Tampa was Great:
That was my 8 month old daughter’s first day watching the ponies with Dad on a Sunday afternoon.
I was kicking it with Chewbacca and Raider Bob and I left feeling like a HUGE 6 year weight was lifted off of my shoulders. We beat Tampa and ended THEIR seaon.

The most important think really
to look at here isn’t the fact we beat TB but the fact that we still played AS A TEAM even to the bitter end against TB. The fact we knocked them out of the playoffs is just icing on the cake.

This tells me
that it was to be Cable the whole time and he had some input on the assistants. Things could be looking good now. Glad we hired relatively early. So let’s get this ship going in the right direction quickly. Superbowl in 2011.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
that was my feeling all along
it was the only way any of this (hiring assistants before the HC) was going to make sense.
I'm here to talk about the past.
That was my first thought

It's called
careful optimism. Not every team is Atlanta and Miami. We still have front office issues.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Front office issues?
Can you really describe what those front office issues are that are not derived from media sourced speculation. I’m sure you want to talk about how Al Davis meddles in the matters of his coaches. Can you cite any examples other than what Kiffin tried to imply? Al lets his coaches coach and pick their staff as long as they are winning and loyal. Do you really think that Al Davis chose Tom Walsh (bead & breakfast) to be the O coordinator under Shell?
I’m not say that Al or the Raiders front office are without problems. What I’m saying is that same front office has done some good things with personnel also in the draft and with free agency. Again, the bad selections in the draft and in free agency could have been Al or it could have been Kiffin or Shell before him, you don’t really know.
I say this because we could be Atlanta or Miami next season and “front office issues” will not be the reason why we won’t they will be the reason that we will.
Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.
I'm saying
that front office people are hitting reporters. I’m saying Davis is making bad choices with drafts and free agency. I’m saying most of the things that come out of Raider land is usually a lie. You know damn well Davis runs the drafts and free agency. If you include Javon Walker and Hall as good choices and giving Kelly all that money, well more power to you. Do you think Cable had a choice in theses assistant coaches? I don’t. When Kiffin got hired they made it known HE recruited the coaches. This was never said this time. The fact that this whole thing was shrouded in mystery means there are front office issues. And they’re not the only thing that have the potential to hold us back. The fact that Davis himself has not hired a GM (football guy) means he will still be making the decisions. And he meddles. We all know he does. Watch Rob Ryan blitz like a mad man at the Browns. Everything now looks good on paper. And I want it to work out. I think it can work out. But it’s unlikely we will have a quick turn around. We need a full year with Cable and getting the players to know the coordinators, whoever they may be, and learn the system. We need to take some of the money we gave Russell, okay, a lot of the money, and restructure his contract and sign Aso. These are all decisions the GM could help make. The only front office issues that you say we will make it will be the hiring of the coaches, that we did in reverse. But in reality it will be the players and the coaches working together with the players that will get us there. Look at our schedule. We are not going to the SB in 2010. One more year of minor mediocrity (6 to 8 wins) and one more off season (with INTELLIGENT decisions, not like last year) and we can get there. I won’t disagree that front office hasn’t done good things, but a lot of things lately have been bad. Notice that Atlanta and Miami have GM’s or middle men between the owner and HC.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Still speculating
You are giving your opinion, not providing any facts. I did not say SB in 2010, I said an Atlanta/Miami turnaround is possible. You can cite Walker, Hall and Kelly, but not without also citing Wilson, Edwards and Chris Johnson. And the draft, Shell said Huff was his pick and if you really look at the Raiders’ past drafts you will see that they are turning out pretty damn good with the exception of the 2001 draft.
As yo criticize Davis for all that is wrong with the Raiders’ drafts but are you going to give him credit for Nnamdi, Lechler, Janakowski, Morrison, Howard, and more recently, Russell, Miller, Henderson, JLH, Bush Richardson, O’Neal, McFadden, Scott and Schilens to name a few.
You could look up all 32 teams and criticize each of them for their bad draft choices and FA acquisitions. This is not a problem that is unique to the Raiders.
Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

I'm a loyal season ticket holder
but the e-mail escaped my in-box for some reason (maybe I didn’t fill out enough of those damn surveys?)
Anyways, saint…was wondering, do we (this site) have access to events like this? When I wrote for a tiny Raider publication a few years back, I got to sit in on Draft Day when we picked Jano. Didn’t get any questions in, but it was still pretty cool.
I'm here to talk about the past.
Nada...I have inquired all the way up:
They don’t understand or want Bloggers in there. Heck, if they had their way, there would be NO Media at all and everyone would just read their web page. Then again, I do have some friends that get in on the action and they run Raider Fan Radio.

No media at all
Yeah, you got that right. We need some Blez influence up in here :)

Wouldn't it be nice for the fans to break every story about the Raider Nation?

I usually look forward to the next football season as soon as the previous one has finished
but I have to say, the more and more I am afraid of how bad it is going to be from here on out.
It does make me incredibly sad to know that Cable was most likely the only choice the Raiders had. College coaches don’t even want to jump on board. I’m not even sure if cable had a hand in picking and ousting all the assistant coaches hired before he was.
I love my Raiders like no other, but I am finally at the point where ever season I am bracing for disappointment. The firing of Lane squeezed the last but of hope out of me( even though Lane was a douche in many respects).
So here I am again praying for the best and getting ready for the inevitable.

Keep your head up
Remember, for the first time since Gannon we have a QB. No team wins without a QB, unless you have a defense of historical proportions. There are some very good football players on this team, don’t confuse losing with having no talent. Indeed there are some holes, notably on the OL and at LB but they can be filled. Al has always been able to sign players and the Raiders have never been in “cap hell” for some reason or other.
The lingering question is will Al and Cable continue to work together or will Cable feel undermined at some time or the other. It appeared that Al and Cable saw eye to eye on most things last season, or if there was a dispute it did not surface and Cable acknowledged that he talked to Al daily, that is a healthy sign. Al may be old and feeble but his mind is not, at least as it pertains to football.
I'm not concerned about the talent or the coaching
I am just more concerned than ever in the front office. I am starting to worry even more when media members say they cannot report half of the dysfunctional things that go on in Alameda. Before I could shrug it off, but each year Big Al’s moves become more and more quizical. If Cable is successful (which is a big "if") how long before he jumps ship for greener pastures? If the players even get a whiff of Al running the team as coach and GM, how long before it falls apart again? How many times can we reinvent the wheel before it crushes us?
Thanks for the comforting words, but I’m a part of the nation that has too may question marks for my good swirling around in my brain.

Eh.
I think if Cable wanted to jump ship he would have went to Seattle like originally planned. I think he wants to be in Oakland. Here is a decent article.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
What Davis needs to do now
is sit back and let Cable do his job. Like I said before, we may have to sit through one more so-so season but then Davis needs to not make any more changes the following year. We can’t keep going through coaches. Cable needs time to implement his ideas and schemes. This is the biggest reason we need a GM.
