Kevin Burnett

The back up Cowboys linebacker is scheduled to visit the Raiders on Tuesday. In two starts last season Burnett, 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds, recorded 38 tackles and two sacks.

he would be a good add for us

Physical, solid tackler. Just what we need in the middle.

Wow, all that in two starts?

I’ll bet he can come at a pretty reasonable price too.

The lawfirm of Morrison, Howard and Burnett.

Works for me!

Those are great numbers especially considering that they are just over two starts. But what would happen to Kirk Morrison? He’s become one of my favorite guys on D!

by ATLDuck on Mar 2, 2009 9:38 AM PST reply actions

I believe

that the Raiders would consider Burnett competing for the SAM position.

he got most of those tackles

on special teams…right? theres no way he comes in out of nowhere and does that in two starts. the national media would be all over that i would think…especially since hes a cowboy

Correct...

It should have read: Burnett, 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds, recorded 38 tackles and two sacks last season for the Cowboys. He also started two games.

What ever happened to

Ed Hartwell, when he came in two years ago i thought he would tear it up for us at the SAM positon, hes huge and had the leadership to do well (or so i thought)

by Trackguy24 on Mar 2, 2009 10:40 AM PST reply actions

He was way too banged up by teh time he got here:

But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

by Raymond St. Martin (Saint) on Mar 2, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, Hartwell was banged up but I think he was also a beneficiary of the Ravens’ system and playing alongside Ray Lewis. After he left Baltimore as a FA, he was God awful here in ATL and he couldn’t even stick with the Bengals just last year.

I am really sweatin about our safety position. I hope that we bring in some veteran with solid leadership. I’d take Lawyer Milloy over Michael Huff back there.

Here’s some more news about linebacker Kevin Burnett.

He is a standout special teams player, but he’s limited to passing downs as a linebacker. The Cowboys may not try to match offers now that Keith Brooking is on board.

The Raiders are reportedly interested in signing offensive tackle Orlando Pace.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Mar 2, 2009 7:04 PM PST reply actions

Not a FA

Raiders would have to trade for Orlando Pace. First reported by Lombardi at NationalFootballPost, then parroted by Jason Jones at SacBee.

If this is true, then absolute shame on the Raiders for trying to bring in a 33 year old guy who’s been hurt the last couple of years and whose contract has a cap charge of $9 million for next year. This is not how you go about rebuilding a team.

The Raiders may have to forego drafting their “weapon” player and draft an OT in the first round and a C in the second round if Grove leaves in free agency.

"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

If Hayward-Bey or Percy Harvin’s available in the second and Mack isn’t, we must draft them. Then get Brinkley in the third (if we don’t get anybody in FA)

According to the Sacramento Bee, Javon Walker is due to receive a guaranteed $5 million roster bonus on Tuesday. The Raiders only could get out of paying it if Walker redid his contract, but that won’t happen. Walker has a very good chance to be on the 2009 roster.

The Ultimate Opportunist

Walker knows

that no one in their right mind would give him a total contract of more then 5 mill. I think this will be one of those situations where Walker will see what AL has done for him, when no one else would and will take a big pay cut.

OMG

Please don’t trade our beautiful draft picks for a old guy. He is smart and good but still, not a draft pick. I hope this doesn’t happen FA only.

Pair of Seahawks free agents visit Oakland

Per Adam Schefter:

Oakland is hosting visits today with two of Seattle’s free agents, quarterback Charlie Frye and offensive tackle Ray Willis. Frye could serve as a backup for JaMarcus Russell, and Willis has drawn interest around the league from tackle-needy teams.

Here’s what scouts say about Willis:

Willis is a four-year player who started 10 games last year. He has played both guard and tackle and he has good size and strength. He’s an adequate overall athlete who can create movement in the run game, due to his strength and leg drive after contact. He has limited lateral quickness and struggles to adjust on the move. He lacks ideal body control in space to secure on the run. He will fall off contact, if he gets overextended and shows limited hip flexibility and body control. He has adequate foot quickness in pass protection. He tends to play upright and will expose his chest for defenders, while attempting to grab wide with his hands. He can be walked back quickly at times, when defenders get inside his frame and will struggle to anchor. He does a good job of attacking on the short set, where his upper-body strength can lock down defenders quickly.

Raiders Sign OT Erik Pears

Per Adam Schefter

[T]he Raiders did make one signing today.

Changes in Denver led to an opportunity for offensive tackle Erik Pears in Oakland. Once Denver did not place a contract tender on Pears, he became an unrestricted free agent. And once Pears became an unrestricted free agent, he jumped at the chance to sign with the Raiders, who will give him a chance to compete for playing time at offensive tackle. After becoming an undrafted free agent, Pears was with Denver from 2005-2008.

Link

Pears played both left and right tackle for Denver in 2006 and 2007, but spent most of last year on the non-football injury list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy last October.

Not sure exactly where Pears fits into the Raiders’ O-line puzzle, but he certainly adds some depth.

"I love being here. I love these players. I'm loyal to these players and this team, all right? I'm on the side of the players and the Raiders. And anybody who isn't on the side of the Raiders, then I'm not with them." - Randy Hanson, DB coach.

by LiveAdam on Mar 3, 2009 10:54 AM PST reply actions

26 yrs old, 6-8, 305 lbs.

The scouts say:

Pears missed the 2008 season after being on the inactive list for the first seven games and then put on the reserve/non-football illness list after undergoing an appendectomy in October. He started at right tackle in 2007 after filling in at left tackle. He is an adequate athlete with excellent size and body control for the position. He has above-average initial quickness and good balance, but is not a natural knee-bender and has a tendency to lunge and reach out after blocks. He is athletic enough to recover when he lets his pads get too far out in front of himself. He has good lateral range for the right side, but struggled some when on the left side against speed-rushers. He understands angles and blocking schemes. He does a good job of playing within himself and not trying to do things he is physically incapable of. He has long arms and does a good job of getting a fit to control and steer opponents. Pears can start for some teams, but is probably a better fit as a backup.

Pears

You’ll like him. Good guy, played at Colorado State and was projected to be drafted in the middle rounds but an injury his senior year kept him from being drafted, and Denver picked him up as a CFA. He was mostly on the practice squad his first year (05) but in 06 stepped in at LT in mid season when Lepsis got hurt. Did a good job, IMO, even though the line as a whole struggled that year. In 07 he started every game at RT and did a good job. Last year, a minor injury in TC gave second year RT Ryan Harris a chance to show that he is very good, so Pears lost his job. As a Bronco fan, I’m sorry to lose Pears.

Melvin Fowler 29 yrs old, 6-3, 310 lbs.

Center Melvin Fowler to visit the Raiders today.

Here’s what the scouts say:

Fowler is six-year veteran who has been a very steady performer in the middle of the Bills’ offensive line. He has above-average size and strength, but wins with quickness, technique, intelligence and toughness. Fowler does a great job to snap and step quickly while taking proper angles to gain leverage. He has good hand use and foot agility to stay connected. He can slam and chip well to the second level or scoop offset-defenders with great quickness and technique. He doesn’t have great power to get movement on the larger defensive tackles in the league and can be walked back some when one-on-one verse bull rushers. He has excellent flexibility and understands how to set and reset quickly to recover as the play unfolds. He has excellent instincts and a tremendous feel for the game, making all the line calls up front. He reacts quick to changing fronts and blitzes to keep Buffalo’s offensive line in the best blocking schemes. Fowler has been very durable over the past few seasons and has become a mainstay on this improving Buffalo offensive line.

O lineman Duke Preston to visit Raiders today

Now center/guard will visit the Raiders today according to FoxSports.com

Preston is the one who replaced Fowler at center last season. 26 yrs old, 6-5, 326 lbs.

Here’s what the scouts say about Duke Preston:

Preston has seen more time as a starter in 2008 as a center and offensive guard. He has excellent size, strength and athleticism for an interior offensive lineman. He has natural power to anchor in the middle of the line as well as enough strength to get movement on double teams and power zone-blocking schemes in the running game. Preston is limited in space to connect with targets on the second level, but he’s a solid technician who understands angles and combination-blocking schemes. He uses his hands well to gain leverage and does a nice job to lock on and stay connected, once engaged. Preston doesn’t have the initial quickness that C Melvin Fowler has, but can be effective as a second-level blocker, when he keeps his pads down. He appears to have a good feel for the game and reacts well to stunts and twists. He was more aggressive in 2008 and is a versatile player who has value giving depth along the offensive line, but he’s shown he can also be an effective starter.

Stewart's not that bad

he’s pretty good on special teams, which I think the Raiders are trying to keep that group together. He’s a good blocker and should be third-string behind Darrell Strong. Darrell Strong is the answer to the #2 TE dilemma. That’s hwy Oakland’s not pursuing any TE in free agency.

Does Andrew Walter Have Any Trade Value?

Walter is definitely in Cable’s doghouse and is likely out because he wasn’t on board with Cable through the middle of the season, and even Tui passed him on the depth chart.

I wouldn’t mind the Raiders brining in Boller, but it would be nice to get a draft pick for Walter rather than simply to release him. A backup QB is probably worth a 4th round pick.

5th rounder at least! Hard to judge the timing on this though, I’m not sure at what point in the offseason Walter’s trade value is the highest? Is it now while teams are scrambling for backups or is it after the draft when things have settled and the teams without viable backups get more nervous?

Contacted by Pro Football Talk on Thursday, the Raiders were noncommittal when asked if they’ll pursue free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen says that the Raiders are the only team “I can see him going to” right now.

Oakland is putting a lot of faith in Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins. “We’re as happy as can be right now,” club spokesman John Herrera said.

According to Joe Fortenbaugh of the National football Post:

Free agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes is expected to sign a multi-year deal with the Oakland Raiders today, a league source has just informed me.

A four-year veteran out of the University of Washington, Barnes has spent his entire career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

by Rayder K on Mar 8, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely correct

Here is a recent Q&A with Fargas and Jason Jones of the SacBee:

Q: You said last year you wanted to become more of a leader. Did that come naturally?
A: Yeah, it came naturally. I don’t feel like I changed what I did. I just knew I had to take more responsibility in doing the little things. Not rah, rah speeches in front of the team, but telling the young guys aside and seeing where they’re at. Talking to my quarterback and making sure he knows I have total confidence in him so he can just be himself and play, things like that. I think as a veteran on the team you have to embrace that role more.

Q: There was a lot of off-the-field news about the Raiders this time last year. But you restructured your contract to ensure you’ll be back this season. Why the desire to stay in Oakland?
A: Probably the most exciting thing I can say going into this season is e have the same coach. We have direction as a team and we know where Coach (Tom) Cable is coming from, what he’s trying to do with us and where we’re trying to go.

Coming back with all three running backs, I’m excited. It showed last year that it takes a corps of running backs to get the job done through the season. And I don’t think there’s a corps that’s going to be stronger than ours this year. And with Coach (Kelly) Skipper coming along to lead us I’m excited.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

I read that right before I checked the comments here

weird. But you’re absolutely right. Fargas needs to stay. He should be the #3 guy. Bush should start as he’s a surprisingly fast guy who fights for the extra yards. His short stature allows him to be a great short-yardage back. Mcfadden’s speed and incredible hands makes him the #2 guy who should get plenty of carries and catches this year. Fargas is a combo of the two but he’s not as fast as D-Mac or as tough a runner as Bush. He’s a good change-of-pace guy who can come in if either Bush or McFadden gets injured.

RAIDERS STILL IN RUNNING FOR BARNES

RaiderBeat.com is reporting that the Raiders are still in the running OT Khalif Barnes:

Free-agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes within the past few days has discussed with several teams the possibility of signing a contract. At one point, his agent felt as if he had a deal in place with the Raiders.
Ultimately, Raiders managing general partner Al Davis wasn’t ready to commit to Barnes. As a result, Barnes’ agent, Kenny Zuckerman, re-opened negotiations with other teams.
Zuckerman wasn’t able to work out a deal over the weekend with any team. That brings him back to the Raiders.
Barnes is itching to get a deal done, and Zuckerman is eager to make that a reality at the start of this week. The Raiders aren’t out of the equation, though they no longer are considered the clear-cut front-runner for Barnes.
The talks hit a snag when Davis put on the brakes so that he could be certain whether he wanted to sign a veteran offensive tackle or to select one of the handful of highly rated prospects with the No. 7 pick in the NFL Draft.
Barnes played for the Jacksonville Jaguars the past four seasons.

RAIDERS END PURSUIT OF BARNES

Take it for what it’s worth, but RaiderBeat.com reports this:

A last-ditch effort to revive on-again, off-again talks with the Raiders about signing free-agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes failed Monday.

The Raiders informed Barnes’ agent, Kenny Zuckerman, that they no longer are interested in signing Barnes, according to a team source.

The two sides discussed the parameters for a deal late last week and appeared close to working out the details. Managing general partner Al Davis stepped in and halted the negotiations because he isn’t ready to commit to who he wants protecting quarterback JaMarcus Russell’s blindside.

Davis, according to the team source, wasn’t sold on Barnes and still is considering using Oakland’s first-round draft pick (No. 7) on one of the many offensive tackle prospects available in this year’s NFL Draft.

The Raiders released Kwame Harris in February and have been discussing potential ways to fill the void ever since.

Third-year player Mario Henderson is the projected starter for now. Erik Pears was signed earlier this month and is viewed as a potential starter. The plans could change in an instant if the Raiders pursue a free agent such as Marvel Smith or opt to draft a tackle April 25-26.

Zuckerman could not be reached for comment. A Raiders official said he is not permitted to comment on contract negotiations.

Barnes is becoming slightly less attractive by now

If he’s not all for playing on a team that is young, on the rise, and has a coach that is highly regaurded by the entire organization (and quite frankly, I’ve not heard 1 negative word spoken of him period), I question him and his overall charactor. Let him go, and persue Marvel Smith. Put together a fair, incentive heavy contract, see what can happen with him. Hell… we only need him to block long enough for the play to develop. Millsaps’ Aaron Pelch to Join NFL’s Oakland Raiders Staff

In the “under the radar news”, the Raiders have hired Aaron Pelch to be assistant special teams coach under John Fassell. Special Teams, already a strong point for the Raiders, but it is always nice to strengthen a strength. Here is the story as reported by WJTV.com:

Millsaps College head football coach Mike DuBose announced today the resignation of assistant head coach and special teams coach Aaron Pelch who will join the NFL’s Oakland Raiders on Monday, March 9 as the assistant special teams coach.

"Aaron did a tremendous job for us these last three years at Millsaps" DuBose said. "He is a very talented individual that will be in this profession for a long time. We wish him the best."

Pelch joined the Majors’ staff in 2006, and in his first year, helped four players garner All-SCAC recognition, including three defensive linemen. In SCAC play, the Majors’ defensive line ranked second in rushing defense (124.8 ypg), while as a unit, the front line totaled 173 tackles, 30 tackles-for-loss, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three QB hurries.

Led by Casey Younger in 2007, the SCAC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year, the defensive line picked up right where it left off the previous season, ranking first in the SCAC in rushing defense at 93.3 ypg – an improvement of 31.5 ypg in 2006. Younger and Denarold Anderson, also a First Team All-SCAC selection, ranked third and fourth in the conference with 7.0 and 6.5 sacks, respectively.

Also the special teams coach from 2006-08, Pelch helped Millsaps grab back-to-back-to-back Special Teams Players of the Year in return specialists Chris Jackson, John Milazzo and Michael Galatas. Jackson averaged 15.5 yards per punt return in 2006, good enough for fourth in the country.

In the kicking game, the Majors ranked eighth in the country in punt return defense in 2007, surrendering just 4.05 yards per return. The average rose to 8.16 yards a return last season, still among the Top 100 in all of Division III. Will Lawrimore led the SCAC in punting average (39.5 ypp) in 2008 and found his name on the list of First Teamers.

BURNETT WEIGHING OFFERS FROM RAIDERS, CHARGERS

From RaiderBeat.com

Free-agent linebacker Kevin Burnett is getting antsy about settling in with a new team. He’s so eager to find out who he will play for this season that he has instructed his agent to finalize a deal as soon as today.
Burnett has visited the Raiders and San Diego Chargers. His agent, Ricky Lefft, confirmed to the Dallas Morning News what RaiderBeat.com reported first, that Burnett has an offer standing from the Raiders.
Burnett, 26, started two games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and ‘07. He is a four-year veteran who is hopeful of landing a starting job somewhere. The Raiders have an opening at the strong-side spot occupied by Ricky Brown, Jon Alston, Sam Williams and Robert Thomas last season.
Brown and Alston were tendered one-year offers to return to the Raiders. That guarantees them a contract but not a starting job. Burnett could move to the inside and push middle linebacker Kirk Morrison to the strong-side position. Or coach Tom Cable could try Burnett on the strong-side.
Either way, the Raiders remain interested in securing the services of Burnett. A Raiders official said Tuesday morning that it’s in Burnett’s hands now. He knows the offer, knows how the Raiders intend to use him and what Cable thinks of him.

true, I won't argue that

Morrison is a very intelligent LB and I respect him for that. But we need someone else manning the middle. There’s also my Angelo Crowell theory. Crowell is listed as an OLB, but spent most of his career playing middle. He’s also a pretty intelligent LB. This could allow us to play around with Morrison and Crowell. Switching him and kirk around to confuse opposing offenses.

Burnett Signs With Chargers

PFT reporting that Burnett agreed to terms with the Bolts over the Raiders. We can still hold out hope for Jasper Brinkley!

I can’t believe the Raiders haven’t re-signed Sam Williams yet. He actually contributed to the team when he didn’t have to start, he’s a favorite of Al Davis, he’s a local guy, and seems to be a good locker room presence. The only reason I can think why they wouldn’t have already signed him is that he is still dealing with the Marquis Cooper tragedy and doesn’t want to deal with the business side of football right now.

Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent S Rashad Baker

According to FoxSports.com

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent S Rashad Baker to a one-year contract, the team announced on Wednesday.

A product of Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, NJ, the 27-year-old Baker joins the Eagles after a two-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. In 2008, Baker recorded 24 tackles and a career-high three interceptions for the Raiders. He joined Oakland late in the 2007 season after playing eight games for the New England Patriots that year.

Baker (5-10, 200) originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Buffalo in 2004, posting 53 tackles, two interceptions and one sack in 28 games with the Bills from 2004-05. He played in one game with Minnesota in 2006 before being released and claimed off waivers by the Patriots during that season.

For his career, Baker has played in 52 games (four starts), recording 78 tackles, five interceptions, six passes defensed, and one sack. After a stellar career as a wide receiver and track athlete at Woodrow Wilson HS, Baker went on to become a four-year starter at Tennessee.

ANDRE SMITH STRUGGLES AT ALABAMA PRO DAY

With already doubts existing into the the top 10 draft worthiness status of OT Andre Smith, his poor showing at his Pro Day will pretty much knock him out of the top 10. This means the Raiders will more than likely not draft an offensive tackle with their #7 pick as the Monroe and J. Smith will certainly be gone.

From NFL.com:

Andre Smith, one of the top offensive tackle prospects in this year’s draft, said he was relying on Alabama’s pro day to make up for the disappearing act he put on at the combine. Well, his times were not overly impressive, but he did at least work out.

Smith measured in at 6-foot-4 ¼, 325 pounds and ran the 40-yard dash in 5.28 and 5.33 seconds. He had a 25-inch vertical, a 7-foot, 10-inch broad jump, a 7.88-second three-cone drill and 19 bench press reps at 225 pounds. His short shuttle time is still to come as are the times from his Alabama teammates.

To put Smith’s workout in perspective, he did not post a single number that would have placed him in the top performers at his position at the combine and many of his numbers were not even close to the top 10 at his position at the combine.

According to our league source, Smith ran with no shirt on and was visibly overweight. With a group of trainers urging him on to run faster, Smith had a generally rough day.

I can still hope for Micheal Oher

Funny you should say that

he is my choice also, all the mock drafts have him sitting there at #7 when Oakland drafts. As it stands now it appears that Andre Smith and Oher will be there at #7. Oher has been my choice from the start, over the other two guys, think he is more naturally talented. The problem is you never know what is in a guys heart and that is what separates the great player from the bust. There are hundreds of guys who are big and fast, but which are the ones that will put it out to be good, that is the question. Sands should be sensational with his size and strength but instead he is always a disappointment. Kwame Harris should be great but is not, I think he really doesn’t have the desire to be great. I think Huff is in that mold also, incredible talent that so far does not translate onto the field.

by Laoren on Mar 11, 2009 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Oher would be fine

i think he’d be motivated and have good morale. He’d be playing under a very talented O-Line coach and a head coach who was and is a great O-Line coach himself. He’d be playing with other talented O-Linemen on what should be a pretty solid o-Line. He’s played against SEC defenses all four years of his college tenure and did so at an elite level. I don’t why he’s not being considered more on here.

the reason why no one is talking about him is..

because the perception is the opposite of what your first sentence says. he was way too inconsistent. he would look like an all star one play, then get beat by a back up de the next(i think that happened against texas tech). you know i love cable when it comes to teaching o line, but i dont know how well he teaches effort. with this pick, we need to be sure because we are pretty close to breaking out and becoming a playoff contender, and he is a big roll of the dice.

by posey440 on Mar 11, 2009 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

true

but I never really saw him being so “inconsistent” I remember him manhandling the Florida D in Ole Miss’s victory over the Gators. I also saw him doing a pretty good job against Tech, he was just a little rough, but not as bad as people say he is.

for sure

i mean its not like he gives up a sack every other play, but he doesnt dominate all game. he gets lazy every once in a while. he is like michael johnson(DE from georgia tech) of offense. he is a top talent, but the effort is a huge red flag on his draft ability.

by posey440 on Mar 11, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

we can't expect him to dominate every game

after all he’s only a rookie and I’m sure Brad Roll, our O-Line coach, and cable can get him in better shape and push him to give them more effort. However, Oher is better than any OT we have on roster and would do a very good job protecting Russell.

Why do you say that?

Mario Henderson is young, still progressing and is the starting left tackle for the Raiders. Oher has hasn’t played a single down in the NFL, so how can you say he is better than Mario? What has Mario done or not done that gives you the impression that 1. Oher is better, and 2. that Henderson will not continue to be a solid left tackle for years to come for the Raiders. Please be factual.

If you are thinking that Oher will be good for right tackle to replace Green, well you know that the Raiders are not going to use #7 on a RT.

I think everyone has there fingers crossed with Henderson

yes he played well at the end of the year, but our line was manhandled by Jaxsonville and Baltimore.
We have a good coach we need players on the line who are quick, strong, and smart.
I belive Oher is all those things and can play either side
If we get Oher, 6’ 6" 325 lbs.they had BETTER put 8 men in the box.

Henderson also filled in at LT for the injured Harris early in the season against Buffalo, KC and San Diego. Do you have any reason to believe that Henderson is neither quick, strong nor smart?

Henderson hasn't played a full season

we don’t know if he can continue to play like this for a full NFL season or if this is even a one season deal. I think we should move Mario to right side with Oher as the LT. This solidifies the O-Line with two young talents on the outside. if Henderson falters, we have erik pears and green to fill in. I’d fell much better about our o-Line if we draft an OT.

Henderson or not...

Look at the history of ZBS teams. Falcons a couple years ago, Denver for like the last 10 years. They have awesome o lines, but you can barely name any of their players. I only know who ryan clady is because i used to live in boise idaho. But can anyone remember matt lepsis? matt weiner? tom nalen? scott schafer? they are average nfl lineman who shined in the zone blocking scheme. Oher or Pears or henderson or monroe and the system produces the same result. the exception is kwame harris, who has to be one of the worst tackles ever. can i get an amen?

And that “system”, is exactly why Denver has been able to turn out running back after running back, year after year which put up 1000 yard seasons.

In the post above from nfl.com it doesnt mention anything about how he did in his position drills. they just so happen to conveniently omit that part of his pro day in order to present him in a bad way. he wont go top 5, but still i think he could go anywhere from jags at 8 to and at the latest 18 to the bears.

Raiders re-sign Justin Miller, William Joesph and others...

From SFGate.com:

I love this! Special teams is now complete, we really needed Justin Miller.

Raiders re-sign Miller, and others

It seems the Raiders have been busier in free agency than they care to say.

With no fanfare, with fanfare meaning any sort of announcement, the Raiders re-signed former Pro Bowl kick returner Justin Miller to a two-year contract. Like, um, more than a week ago.

“They must not have out it out there yet, I guess,” Miller said as he arrived at team headquarters Monday for the first day of offseason workouts.

But, wait there’s more.

Free agent defensive tackle William Joseph apparently isn’t a free agent anymore. He, too, showed up for work Monday after signing an undiclosed deal recently.

As for the class of restricted free agents, strongside linebacker Ricky Brown signed his $1.545 million tender sheet Thursday and reported for duty. Special teams players Jon Alston and Jon Condo also signed their own $1.01 million tenders, locking them in for one more year of service.

Miller’s signing should be considered a boon. A Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2006, he joined the Raiders midway through last season and immediately made a splash with two touchdown returns in seven games.

He averaged 24.8 yards on 32 returns while allowing Johnnie Lee Higgins to focus on punt returns after struggling with ball security on kicks. Miller visited with the Titans on March 4 before signing with the Raiders, who claimed him off waivers in November when the Jets cut him.

Rookie safety Tyvon Branch won the kick return job in training camp but was sidelined by hand and shoulder injuries. Miller and Branch will likely compete for the kick return job in camp.

That is terrific news

The Raiders have really handled the off season like a legitimate pro franchise. There seems to be a direction, a plan to form this club. I credit Cable for this. Al gets a lot of criticism but I have always felt that Al listens to his coaches too much some times. Kiffin was always complaining that he didn’t have the players so Al tried to get them by overpaying a lot of guys. It seems to me that Cable wants to build the team from within and from the draft, that is the way to go.
I am elated that they brought Miller back, he can play a little DB, but more importantly is a force on the kickoffs. What they don’t need is Higgins doing kick offs, punt returns and receiver.
Latest mock draft on the Pro Football Post has Raji dropping to the Raiders at #7 but both Mack and Unger being gone by the 40th. They have the Raiders getting Heyward-Bey at 40. If so, the Raiders better get busy with a FA center.

Jamarcus Russell

What’s the general take on him?

Is this a defining moment kind of year or is there a long leash coming from Cable for him to grow into the position?

"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."

- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

by 5Blings on Mar 16, 2009 2:47 PM PDT reply actions

For all intents

Russell was a rookie last year, and the youngest QB in the league so I think most of the fans understand that last year was a learning year. He finished up very well after going through the Kiffin/Cable switch.
I wouldn’t call this year a defining year, presumably he will improve a lot from last year, but would imagine he will also make a lot of mistakes, but then again Favre made a lot of mistakes last year and he is a 15 year veteran.
I don’t think there is any question that he will have a very long leash. Franchise QB’s are hard to find, and Oakland hasn’t had one for 20 years. Gannon had a few good years in Oakland at the end of his career, I believe the Raiders feel they have a franchise QB in Russell. He seems to have the desire and temperament to be an NFL QB, god knows he has the arm. It is Cable’s philosophy to run the ball, so Russell will not be expected to pass them to victory like the Cardinals do with Warner. He will be expected to make the safe throws, move the chains and let the backs run the ball.

by Laoren on Mar 16, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

To add on to what Laoren says...

Jamarcus russell is going to be 23 next season. It is still very early in his career, and I expect a breakout year from jmarc. He does not force the ball into coverage like some gunslingers. he has had bad throws and decisions, but he doesnt put the ball up for grabs.
That bullshit that mortensen said last year about how jmarc was tipping 300 lbs. was a flat out lie. Jamarcus has the only 2 things required to be an all star qb in this league

1. The skill sets-best arm of all time, increasing accuracy, quick as hell release, mobile and very strong

2. Work Ethic-what mort failed to realize is that jamarcus spent an average of 7 hours a day in the raiders facility this past offseason. Jamarcus wants to be great and is working for it.

The longest leash

This kid is getting so much money and has so much talent. On top of that he hasn’t had too much of a chance in the dysfunction that has been the Raiders in his two years. He’s got a great attitude and all recent reports speek of his escalading work ethic. He also leads an offense that is currently “run first”, with three backs that could make things happen on any play. With all that said the managment loves him, the team respects him, the coaches like him, and the fans give him 110% support.
Let me know if I missed anything guys.

And 5Blings, thanks for the kind words and the intrest in general.

Well deserved, in my opinion.

So, the outsider’s view (remember, cowboys fan here) is that the Raiders need a WR in this draft. It’s likely Maclin or Crabtree, or both, are there at #7 for you.

As I and my cohorts start to look at the upcoming draft, Dallas will likely have 11 picks, but no 1st rounder due to the Roy Williams trade last year. Attached is a view of what it would take, using the updated Jimmy Johnson points table. Dallas picks at #51 (please note that it is our 1st pick but occurs in round 2), #97 and #113 in the first 4 rounds. My question to you all is this; how likely woud Oakland be to make the move listed at 40?

To get to 50 (CLE) – takes 10 points – trade 51 (1st) and 210 (7th)

To get to 49 (CHI) – takes 20 points – trade 51 (1st) and 184 (6th)

To get to 48 (DEN) – takes 30 points – trade 51 (1st) and 148 (5th)

To get to 47 (NE) – takes 40 points – trade 51 (1st) and 113 (4th) for NE 47 (1st) and 151 (5th)

To get to 46 (HOU) – takes 50 points – trade 51 (1st), 148 (5th), and 184 (6th)

To get to 45 (NYG) – takes 60 points – trade 51 (1st), 148 (5th), and 158 (5th)

To get to 44 (MIA) – takes 70 points – trade 51 (1st) and 113 (4th)

To get to 43 (SF) – takes 80 points – trade 51 (1st), 113 (4th), and 193 (7th)

To get to 42 (BUF) – takes 90 points – trade 51 (1st), 113 (4th), and 158 (5th)

To get to 41 (GB) – takes 100 points – trade 51 (1st) and 97 (4th) for GB 41 (1st) and 201 (7th)

To get to 40 (OAK) – takes 110 points – trade 51 (1st) and 97 (4th)

To get to 39 (JAC) – takes 120 points – trade 51 (1st), 97 (4th), and 210 (7th)

To get to 38 (CIN) – takes 130 points – trade 51 (1st), 97 (4th), and 184 (6th)

To get to 37 (SEA) – takes 140 points – trade 51 (1st), 97 (4th), and 158 (5th)

To get to 36 (CLE) – takes 150 points – trade 51 (1st), 97 (4th), and 148 (5th)

To get to 35 (STL) – takes 160 points – trade 51 (1st), 97 (4th), and 113 (4th) for STL 35 (1st) and 194 (7th)

To get to 34 (NE ) – takes 170 points – trade 51 (1st), and 69 (3rd) for NE 34 (1st), 120 (4th), and 186 (6th)

My Mistake

His name is Jason Horton. He is a DB from KC. I don’t remember him playing much.

is that how you judge all the players in the league?

Camp Fodder

Horton hasn’t been on an NFL roster since 2006. He missed the ‘07 season with a broken arm. He’ll compete for a special teams job.

Veiry NICE!!!
the signed barnes
quietly resigned miller too
i was waiting to hear the news :D

by bizy_b on Mar 17, 2009 5:54 PM PDT reply actions

WHY!?!?

Why did they sign Horton???
I think that is just a waste of money, and he will probably not even play. (Maybe just on Special Teams)
I was hoping that they would sign somebody like Darren Sharper or Roy Williams as a DB. I hope they still do get Sharper or Williams, and they just got Horton as a Special Teams type of guy.

by L.A. Raiders on Mar 18, 2009 1:30 PM PDT reply actions

If he hasn’t played in two years then im sure he was extremely cheap and will have no real affect on our cap. We won two games on special teams and almost won two more, so id say its pretty important to have capable players playing there. Also i believe their is a Horton on Was, maybe that was who you where thinking of posey.

by Trackguy24 on Mar 18, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe i got the wrong guy in my head, but i do like the signing

Oakland is going after role player free agents and starting to realize you find your star power in the draft. That is why we have signed 2 offensive tackles, a special teamer in horton, kept william joseph at dt and chris morris at center guard and justin miller at kr/pr.

Im really glad we arent going out after alot of these big name skill positions like torry holt or harrison or matt jones. They are free agents for a reason, and that reason is their team’s dont want them anymore, so why should we? And they are all old and beat up except matt jones but he is a work out warrior and a druggy and not that good of a receiver now or ever.

True

Good point, but the Raiders need to stop thinking about winning games on Special Teams. They need to start thinking about winning games on Off. and/or Def.

I Agree

But there is nothing wrong with winning games on SP Teams. They are part of the team.

I Have A Proposal

Why not go after Tank Johnson. The Raiders are always substituting DT’s in and out and I think it is ideal to go get another DT, specially one as good as Tank. He is still available in the FA pool, and should come at a reasonable price. From what I hear, The Cowboys are unlikely to bring him back so we should at least make an attempt at him. He is an above average run stuffer and can be a better choice than grabbing someone in the draft. I’m not referring to Raji because he is the too good and has too much potential. But, he is better than the rest and fairly young. He compliments Kelly well since both play with their frame and aggression. He is similar to the guys we already have, but he is a little better.

Thats what I'm saying

I think it is a good idea, but since they re-signed William Joseph, I think they should cut Sands because he is just a bust, plus he is lazy and fat. Tank Johnson would be great to replace him. If we bring in Tank then he would most likely be second string to Kelly and that would put Gerald Warren behind him. But I think Tank might turn out to be better than Kelly.

I like him

We can take center off our draft list. I like the guy he started 32 games and the Doliphins
thought that he can’t play well against bigger men i like that beacuse this should modivate him and make him work harder and prove everyone wrong don’t be surprised if he turns out to be Great.

Just Jamarcus Baby!

Satele acquired
The trade was first reported by the Miami Herald and confirmed Monday morning by representatives for both players. Miami will receive a sixth-round pick from Oakland and the two sides will swap selections in an undisclosed round, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson.
