Not Giving Up On Huff
Everyone is saying Huff needs to go. I say, give him one more year to get used to his position or to be moved back to Strong Safety. This year is the perfect year for the Huff Experiment since Huff will earn a very acceptable pay, which is under 1 million dollars.

I remember two years ago, Michael Huff was decent at Strong Safety and was coming along well. He as making great tackles and was just fitting in well with the team. Last year, he got to move to Free Safety. This movement is very tough, especially for a Strong Safety. They have to go from run stopping to pass preventing. It involves a lot more responsibility and a lot more speed. It takes a couple years to master this position, evident by players like Sean Taylor, Ed Reed and Brain Dawkins. All these players struggled at first, but eventually became great.

Also, it is a good thing Michael Huff played Strong Safety for a little while. This will better prepare him for making touchdown-saving tackles and helping out in the run game from the Free Safety position. He is still a great player. We all, deep down inside, know, he is a great player. We just need to give him some time to recover from his wounds so he can become a good player.

The one upside to Huff is he is young and still has potential. He is a good talent, who can tackle. With the new and improved staff, there is no way of predicting how good Huff can be. I am willing to give Huff another year. Who is with me?

I think Davis realized
that even though he would have loved to cut Huff, there were no better options out there
so Huff is getting another chance basically because we won’t be able to find a decent replacement
I still think he’s gone after this year, even if he improves

This might just motivate him
to play harder this year knowing that he might get the boot if results aren’t show… he is a very talented player who has all the tools necessary to become great- but what he needs to do is put them into practice on the field.

But would free safety be his natural position? I thought he was a CB back in college, so I figure that he’d have more solid coverage skills.

Too much blown coverage
If it wasn’t for his blown coverage against the Jets’ TE we wouldn’t have had to go into OT. Way too much receiving yards for TE. I don’t consider hi ma good tackler by any means. I’d call him average. He wasn’t even that good of a tackler at SS. Part of the reason he was moved to FS is because he was more of a coverage guy at SS than a run stopper. Then he gets moved to FS and all of a sudden can’t cover. We need someone better at the spot.

I believe Michael Huff
will become the player we thought he would be. I say we keep him at FS because he’s got good speed but he’s not a good tackler so it would be better for him to roam around and pick off deep balls. If we plug Branch in at SS then our secondary will be set. He’s a hard hitter with speed that will shut down the run. The only way I would change this opinion would be if the Cowboys release Roy Williams and we get him as our SS.
Huff played all the secondary positions in college but his natural position is believed to be SS. I think that changed when he got in the NFL because his lack of size.

One More Year
Based on his contract its obvious that the Raiders are giving Huff one more year to get his sh*t together and prove that he can play in the secondary. At this point they’ll probably have him try every single secondary position to see what he’s best suited for, whether that is CB, SS, or FS.
When Huff was playing SS I always thought he was out of position due to his size and seemingly poor tackling skills. He started to show flashes of understanding the FS position in the defensive scheme, but it didn’t last long and he was replaced by Hiram Eugene. I still he’s best suited for FS though, he just needs to figure out how to read the play and the QB to figure out where he needs to be on the field.
We can only hope that John Marshall, Lionel Washington, and Willie Brown can get something to click for our former #7 pick.

ironic
that our former #7 pick is in his last year when a new #7 pick is coming in.

These Are Huff's Stats Over The Years
2006 – 78 Tackles
2007 – 85 (1 Forced Fumble And 1 INT)
2008 – 28 Tackles (Conversion Year)
With these stats, one can see the conversion really affected him. We can either give him one year more at FS, or move him back to SS, where he was improving. But one thing is for sure, we will not let him go.

I Have Issues With Your Analysis
First, I don’t really think of FS as being a position that’s going to garner a lot of tackles the way that SS does. For a FS you should be looking at stats like passes defended, passes broken up, interceptions, etc., the same way you would for a CB. Second and more importantly, Huff saw significantly less field action last year, and was usually on the field only in nickel or dime packages. Of course his numbers are going to be lower, he got benched. As I said before, the Raiders will try him at all 3 DB positions to see where he fits. I still think he’s best suited for FS.

For Competition
I think Tyvon Branch will become a starter this year. I think he can play any safety spot. He has tremendous speed and he will emerge this year. From what I am hearing, he was a beast with an injury the whole year last season. Imagine him this year. Injury free and straight up beastly.

This Is Dealing With Our Safeties

I found it interesting because our blog talks about these things. I feel we shouldn’t give up on Huff just yet. Looking at him in college, and at the past scouting combine, he was AMAZING. I will give him a couple, yes couple, more years to get better. I think he will improve this year.
